Chapter 35: Pidgey's Strength

Chapter 35: Pidgey's Strength

"Even at a disadvantage, I can still win! Pinsir, charge and use Vice Grip!" The young samurai, taking advantage of the first move, didn't hesitate to launch an offensive. He commanded Pinsir to charge straight at Pidgey, ready to clamp down with its powerful pincers.

"Pinsir—!" With a low roar, Pinsir's gaze turned fierce as it sprinted forward. Harnessing the momentum of its run, it leaped into the air, channeling a surge of normal-type energy into its horns, aiming to fiercely clamp down on Pidgey.

"Dodge the attack..." But faced with such a telegraphed move, Ash remained calm and directed Pidgey.

"Pidgey—!" Using its aerial agility, Pidgey effortlessly maneuvered around Pinsir's attack with a simple swerve in midair.

Having missed its target, Pinsir was left powerless in its trajectory and began to plummet towards the ground, utterly defenseless.

"Use Wing Attack!" Ash wouldn't miss this opportunity and commanded Pidgey to execute its most powerful known move, Wing Attack.

"Pidgey—!" A cyan energy gathered on Pidgey's wings, forming a pair of energy wings. It then swooped down towards Pinsir.

"Pinsir, dodge it!" The samurai boy shouted in panic, recognizing the Wing Attack move. Even though Pinsir was physically stronger and boasted significant defensive capabilities, this hit could substantially deplete its energy.

However, Pinsir, caught mid-air, had no leverage to maneuver. Without the ability to Mega Evolve, Pinsir lacked wings and thus the capability to fly. It clumsily tried to block with its arms in a desperate defense, hoping to shield itself from Pidgey's dive.

Pidgey, propelled by the dive's momentum, smashed its energy-charged wings against Pinsir's arms. The impact sent Pinsir hurtling back, accelerating its fall to the ground, creating a slight depression in the grass where it landed.

Despite the successful counterattack, Ash frowned slightly. According to his strategy, Pidgey should have exploited its agility to attack Pinsir from the side where it was undefended. Instead, Pidgey opted for a frontal assault on Pinsir's strongest defensive point, reducing the effectiveness of the hit.

Yet, considering that Pidgey had only been with him for one day, and yesterday's training was focused solely on mastering Quick Attack, it was unreasonable to expect perfection in battle tactics so soon. Ash realized that further training in combat skills was necessary. Strength alone was not enough.

"Pinsir!" The samurai boy watched anxiously as his Pinsir struggled to stand. Seeing it eventually get up without apparent major damage, he relaxed slightly and smiled, "It seems my Pinsir is indeed stronger. Don't be afraid, charge again and use Vice Grip!"

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Clearly, the samurai boy made a poor judgment based on the recent turn of events. Observing that Pinsir wasn't visibly hurt, he assumed that its superior strength could overpower Pidgey.

Pinsir's expression turned fierce as it charged once more, using its momentum to leap towards Pidgey, its large horns aimed directly at the bird.

"Pidgey, take to the air, increase the distance, and use Gust!" This time, Ash opted for a long-range attack with Gust instead of the more powerful Wing Attack.

Pidgey swiftly ascended to a higher altitude, well out of Pinsir's reach. As it began to fall, Pidgey used the timing to unleash Gust.

With rapid flaps of its wings, powered by the energy of its Flying type, Pidgey whipped up a fierce windstorm that swept towards the grounded Pinsir.

Pinsir crossed its arms in front of itself, attempting to block the attack as before. However, the wind enveloped its entire body, not just the front, but also blasting from the sides.

Although Pidgey's base stats were low and the power of Gust was not particularly strong, Pinsir's special defense was notably weaker than its physical defense, significantly lower in fact.

This attack proved more effective than the previous Wing Attack. Pinsir was slammed into the ground with a painful cry, unable to stand up promptly this time.

"How can this be?!" The samurai boy was shocked as the situation had turned against his expectations; his Pinsir seemed to have taken a severe hit.

Ash felt somewhat disappointed with the samurai boy's abilities. He had lost to Gary yet seemed not to have learned much from that battle. Shaking his head slightly, Ash commanded again, "Pidgey, use Gust!"

Pidgey responded with a cry, flapping its wings again to stir up another fierce windstorm, targeting Pinsir still struggling on the ground.

"Pinsir, pull yourself together and dodge the attack!" the samurai boy shouted anxiously, hoping to inspire Pinsir to rally. Despite struggling to its feet, Pinsir was still a step too slow.

"Boom—!" The fierce wind swept across the ground, stirring the grass into a whirlwind that enveloped Pinsir. Blades of grass mixed with the powerful gusts battered Pinsir, dealing even more severe damage!

Witnessing this, Ash's eyes brightened with realization. He pondered that while the inherent power of a move was fixed, it seemed possible to enhance it by utilizing the surrounding environment.

The samurai boy watched Pinsir in the midst of the tempest, unsure how to respond and merely hoping that Pinsir could withstand the attack.

However, as the wind died down, Pinsir collapsed to the ground, unconscious and clearly unable to continue the battle.

"Pinsir is unable to battle; Pidgey wins!" Misty, seeing the outcome, immediately raised her right hand to declare victory.

"How... how could this happen..." The samurai boy seemed unable to accept the result. His ace Pokémon had suffered another devastating defeat, much like the previous day's loss to Gary, without even managing to touch his opponent.

"Well done, Pidgey, but there is room for improvement. I believe you've realized that yourself," Ash said as Pidgey flew back to him, seeking praise. While Ash was generous with his praise, he also pointed out areas where Pidgey could improve.

Pidgey nodded thoughtfully, sensing from the battle that using Gust and Wing Attack were vastly different. Gust seemed more effective than Wing Attack, but Pidgey was momentarily unclear about the reasons behind this.

Ash chose not to explain further at that moment. With another battle ahead and afternoon training scheduled, it was a good opportunity for Pidgey to reflect on its own. This would also provide a chance for Ash to clarify during training, helping Pidgey understand the underlying principles better.
