Second Impressions

Uhhhh, hi? Mia stared nervously at the mage whom had tried to exploderdor her a few days ago. She would open a mind link to try and talk, but her entire body felt as if it would implode at the slightest touch a few minutes ago, and she wasn't eager to repeat the experience.

At the very least they're not trying to kill me at the moment...? And I mean, I don't think I'm outside of the town or anything given the pull isn't... Actually, why is the pull, well, pulling me towards her...? Tentatively, Mia tried to take a step backwards. They managed it after a moment, before feeling a pull in a different direction once she'd taken a few steps away. It was weaker now then it had been before, much weaker. Entirely manageable and suppressible, but it was still there.

Her walking back almost seemed to amuse the mage, seeming to think they were intimidated. And well, they were, that just wasn't the reason they did it.

"So I hear you can use mind magic, hm? Then you should understand the following runes." The mage spoke calmly and bent down towards Mia. Before beginning to draw through the air, to Mia's shock.

How in the world is she doing that? She's drawing runes on the air itself... How...? Mia felt the urge to try to mimic her right there and then, but the still lightly coursing pain she'd received from her over expenditure earlier served to deter that little thought. Coupled with the fact that she was still feeling a little bit blue, literally. She decided against it. Instead waiting for the mage to finish whatever spell they were casting in this strange format.

So, "High"? I'm guessing they're using mind magic here to try and communicate, but High output? Next up is "Link"... Um, am I missing something here? Mia stared at the words they'd written out for a moment, before doing her best job to point at the "High" rune, sticking one of her claws out at the symbol. Following that, she vehemently shook her head.

That elicited a little snort of laughter, but they carried on writing anyway. Their finger carving out another "High"

Alright treat me like an idiot why don't you, give us both a headache that's real cool of you. Mia grumbled to herself as she watched the spells final word being carved out. Recognizing the symbol of "Translation" even before it was even half way carved out.

"Thanks for not listening to me now you're gonna get bombarded by my thoughts you absolute buffoon why would you do this please tell me why why you thought this would be a good idea because now I can't help what comes up to the surface and I'm also kind of worried that you're going to kill me because to tell you the truth you're kind of acting like an ass anyway you wanna turn off this spell because I already know it's not pleasant listening to this spie-" Which had all come rolling off of Mia in the span of about a quarter second.

"PFF-" The mage recoiled and coughed a few times before staring back at the wolf. "Yeesh, my bad! You just defy every monster norm don't you? Alright, alright, I'll set the spell to low"

The human that Mia had defended, and evidently they'd done the same for her, looked at the mage for a moment incredulously. "Mira, the hell are you going on about?"

"Don't worry about it." Mira waved a hand in the mans direction.

So, Mira's their name? Neat. Mia sat and waited as Mira began to cast another spell, this time writing "Low" instead of "High". Which Mia felt somewhat smug about. I'm a little worried about mixing our names up if I say them to close to each other too many times. I mean, they're only separated by a single letter, but it'll be fine. That's the "Link", Low, aaand, Translation. Alright, "Hit me with it-oh, oops."

"What?" Mira raised an eyebrow "Hit you with, what now?"

"Forget it, just a saying, anyways uh... Hi!"

"You certainly have quite the feminine voice for a monster." Mira noted, "energetic as well, it's rather surprising."

"Er... Thanks? So were you the one that helped me with my... issue?"

"Yes, that would be me, expert battle mage and head magician of this place. Whom has so graciously cured your no doubt excruciating mana burn. How you even let it get to that point and didn't become critically injured by it, I cannot fathom."

"Yeah, like I said, thanks. Anyway, don't want to be rude Mira, but it just sounds like you're bragging to somebody you just met."

She stared at Mia incredulously for a moment, before "speaking" again. "How... Do you know my name?"

Mia tilted her head at the mage and stared puzzled for a moment. "I heard it?"

"I didn't tell you my name, you couldn't have heard it. What the hell are you doing?" Mira's hand moved to swipe at the runes that still existed in the air but Mia quickly tried to reason with them.

"Wait! You didn't say it but they did, just a moment ago!"

Her gaze only got more confused, before she spoke out loud. "Aye bad day today innit." Markim side eyed her but let it pass. "What did I just say?" She asked shortly after.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

"Uh.. Aye bad day today innit? Why?"

"Ok, now tell me what I meant."

Mia continued to stare at the mage, eyes narrowing in at them as they wondered what the hell their agenda was by messing with them like this. "Well?" Mira probed.

"You're just saying that it's been a bad day. Which is understandable I haven't been having a very good day either." Mia deadpanned.

"Yeah, I'm gonna need a moment." Mira waved her hand through the mind runes still glowing in the air breaking up the spell.

"Wai-"t! Aw, dammit!

"So, I'm not sure how valid this is." Mira started off as she turned to face Markim, "but I think the wolf can understand our language."

After a short pause, Markim responded with a simple, "what?"

"I know right?" Mira gave a little half shrug. "Ok wolf, if you can understand this walk in a circle."

Mia did as instructed, standing up and walking in a circle, then sitting back down.

"See?" Mira pointed a thumb at Mia as she turned back around to face Markim. "Alright, I'll have to rescind my previous aggression. Thank you for asking me to heal monsters soldier, this is definitely... Interesting."

"I thought it was just... An oddity, maybe something smart enough to see siding as humans to be the more likely way to survive. Though I suppose it being intelligent makes sense."

Tap, tap, tap. The two humans turned to face the source of the noise. Mia was tapping on the surface she sat on, when she got the attention that she wanted she raised a paw to air. Slowly, she began carving out the same patterns that Mira had used, then pointed at her.

"Hah! It's asking me to use mind magic, this thing's remarkably intelligent! I guess I was wrong to think of it as some sort of monster prodigy, no this is a once in a lifetime miracle monster, and it just so happened to come running right to us! One moment, I've got time for maybe one more conversation then I need to get back to work wolf. I'm taking you with me though, can't leave you unsupervised." Mira waved Markim away right before she began casting. "Soldier, it's about time for you to return to the field. Don't screw up this time, you won't have a walking miracle to save you again."

Mia's rescuee/rescuer nodded, before walking out of the room, leaving the two alone.

"So-"

"First things first," Mia interrupted immediately, "stop calling me an "it" or a "something", I'm a conscious thinking being thank you very much. My name is Mia, capital M. And I'm very much a "her".

Mira once again stared at Mia, forwardly shocked by what they'd said, before barking out a short laugh and bringing a hand to their forehead. "Alright, I should've expected that. Given you're a monster that's aware of it's own being. Kay, Mia, as you just heard I'll be taking you with me up to my post during this flux. As much as you seem intelligent, you're still a monster. And while I personally am simply thrilled with this development, those on the wall might not take too kindly to seeing something like you up on said wall."

"I think you're forgetting about something." Mia stated simply.

"And, that would be?"

Mia turned to the side and looked down at Willa's body, their chest rising and falling evenly. "It would seem you've completely forgotten Willa is here."

"Ah, of course, they also have a name?" Mira asked curiously.

"Yes, and they're just as intelligent as I am for that matter. They got hurt really badly during this pull, which is the whole reason I ended up hurting myself so badly to make sure they stayed safe." Mia still shuddered at the recollection of that pain, but kept the shivers to a minimum.

"Hm, alright, I'll take them with me as well. Oh and, you're small enough, so, one moment." Mira began to carve yet another pair of runes into the air, an entirely different kind from what Mia had seen so far. She watched with rapt attention. As soon as she finished, which was short it was only two runes, out from it came a small bag, a little larger then Mia was. "Get in." Mira smiled cheerily as she held it in front of Mia.

"Uh, what?"

"What, did the link flutter for a second there? Get in the bag. You can't just be running around in the middle of the open during a flux, you're going to scare people at best and get attacked at worst. Same with your little friend there."

It was Mia's turn to stare incredulously this time, but she at least understood that Mira was probably right. "Fine... I'm trusting you on this." Mia told the mage, though she was fairly confident she could burst from a bag like this pretty easily unless it was some kind of super duper magic reinforced cell compacted to a miniature size meant to hold small monsters such as herself. Actually, if this person was that supposed grand mage that could be a real problem but by now Mia had already grabbed Willa and dipped inside, so it might be a bit late for that particular concern. Oh well. "To infinity and b-"eyond! Oh they turned off the spell.

She would've frowned at that, but it wasn't like she could even do as much.
