Moon to My Earth Part 4
The Moon is Ready

The Moon is Ready

The next morning, Merig, Barth, and Larry are out doing their patrol rounds, Cormac and Deirdre are spending more time making changes at the flower shop, while Kate, Joanna, Thomas, Ashley, Orla, and Merig Senior are at the training grounds watching Gordo and Emerald spar. The two are wearing their padded gear and throwing punches at each other at lightning speed, with Gordo putting more strength into his fists while he and Emerald dodge each other's attacks. They focus on their movements and each other’s, ducking, dodging, blocking, and landing a few blows to the safety gear, leaving the two unscathed from the impacts as they continue their training session. The others are enthralled by their performance and silently cheer them on as they watch from their seats in the resting area. After some time, the session comes to a close and the two cease their punches as they stand before each other, panting and sweating. The two take off their gear and catch their breath before they make their way to the armory and place their gear in the respective storage. They then grab themselves some water to hydrate themselves as they head to the resting area and take their seats with the rest of the group.

(K)You both did great. You were so fast, I could hardly keep up.

(G)Thanks. Emerald did great, keeping up with my speed. I added a little more strength and I don’t even think she noticed.

(EM)I did a little bit, I felt myself having to put a bit more effort into it. But that’s okay. I actually enjoyed the workout.

(G)I enjoyed it too, I feel the burn.

(A)You were a badass out there, Emerald. I loved watching you two. I’d love to get the chance to spar with you one of these days.

(EM)That would be fun. Dodging alchemy attacks shouldn’t be too hard. My running speed is insane.

(A)I would just be throwing water cannons at you. Maybe it’ll be fun in the summer.

(EM)Oh, I would love that, that’s something to think about.

(J)So are you just training your upper body strength right now?

(EM)Pretty much. I’m better with my kicks and lower body than my upper body using my punches. That’s what I want to train the most, so I can fight with both my punches and my kicks while I’m out there fighting bandits.

(T)You’re doing great so far, Emerald, your family must be proud.

(EM)They are. My dad encouraged me to join the guards. He said it would be good for me. I told him I would take care of him since his injury has left him permanently unable to walk properly. But he doesn’t want to rely on me or Karry, so he said I should do what I’ve always wanted to do. Ever since he was attacked by those bandits that injured him, I found myself angry and I just want those bandits to pay for what they did to him.

(O)You’re a wonderful daughter, Emerald, helping your dad recover and taking care of him, as well as helping your sister. You deserve the world, and I know you’ll do great things in the Royal Guards from what I’ve seen here so far.

(Msr)Agreed, you’re a strong person and I’m sure even your mother would be proud.

(EM)[smiles] Thank you. My family never approved of my father teaching me martial arts. They’re the type that thinks a woman shouldn’t be doing certain things and that I should be more ladylike. My dad was just fine teaching me how to fight.

(A)There’s nothing wrong with women fighting. You’re just fighting bandits, not an army. That would be a different story if that was the case.

(EM)Of course, this is just small work and I’m a powerful fighter. As a woman, I’ll still do what I’m able to and leave the rest to the stronger fighters. I know women are weaker, but I still want to help with my skills as much as possible even if it’s just light work.

(G)And that’s fine by us, at least us goblins. We’re willing to protect the women where we’re needed as well.

(K)You’re a very brave woman, Emerald. I even talked to Merig about joining as a royal mage. But he insists I don’t because he worries about my safety. Now that we’re starting a family, that’ll be a lot harder for me to achieve. Barth is still training me, so maybe I have a chance. But for now, I want to raise my son with my husband and be with both of them.

(EM)That’s understandable. Whatever you choose to do is up to you in the future.

(A)But hey, having you out there with me fighting bandits will be so much fun. We’ll team up as women and kick ass.

(EM)Oh, I look forward to it, bandits are a menace to our city and I’ve seen how strong the Royal Guards are. Dad used to teach me some martial arts skills, but that was only when he wasn’t doing his merchant work. After he got attacked, I picked up my training again, but I decided to train myself this time. I used trees as targets and moved up to fighting bandits. The forest was my training ground. I trained as much as I could when I wasn’t helping Dad recover, or helping Karry run the shop. I eventually stopped training in the forest once my skills improved, and I decided to see if I could get recruited into the guards. I was happy when Merig accepted me and the next day, I was on the way here. I thought I was running late and so I rushed to wake up and got dressed and ran out of the house as fast as I could. On the way, I was running down a street and these two guys came out of nowhere and I accidentally bumped into them. I immediately apologized, and they said they didn’t care and they were going to teach me a lesson. They started chasing after me and I ran through the alleys and streets trying to lose them. That’s when I met Gordo. I found him in an alleyway and he fought the men off. I didn’t have a weapon on me, so I was useless. I’m still grateful that I ran into him when it happened.

(G)I was just doing my job.

(EM)Don’t let him be modest, he kicked their asses, it was great to watch. Once I learned that Gordo would be training me, I knew he would be a great mentor from what I saw when he fought those men off.

(J)He’s doing a wonderful job. You’ll be a Royal Guard in no time.

(G)I told her as long as she trains with me, she’ll be a powerful fighter.

(K)He’s not wrong, Emerald. Gordo is pretty tough. You should’ve seen him in the dungeon back when we rescued Merig. His arm got bitten by a giant spider and he still wanted to fight, but we told him to rest. But when Sean had his mana gun pointed at my belly, he and Cormac came to my rescue. I’ll never forget it. Cormac shot his hand with a bolt from his crossbow and Gordo spin-kicked him away from me and made sure he didn’t stand back up. He and Cormac both protected me while I destroyed the Fomor seal that Sean was carrying. Cormac and Gordo are my heroes and I’ll always tell people that.

(G)[smiles] I take pride in knowing I saved a friend. That’s all I cared about.

(K)[smiles] You didn’t just save a friend, we’re family, remember? Nevan will see how strong his Uncle Gordo is.

(G)[chuckles] Are you going to pull at my heartstrings too, Kate?

(K)[giggles] I’m just letting you know that you’re loved here, that’s all.

(G)Thanks, Kate, that means a lot.

(K)Besides, I’m sure he’ll enjoy watching you fight along with everyone else and he’ll learn a lot from you all.

(G)He’ll learn the most from his wonderful mom, he’ll receive the most love and care from you, and none of the love and care that the rest of us show him will amount to what his own mother will give him.

(J)He’s right, a mother’s love is the most powerful thing.

(O)It’s unconditional, and I know you feel it already before he’s even born.

(K)I do, actually. When I had that gun pointed at my belly, I rolled over onto my side and put my arms around my belly to shield it from harm had he shot me. I know I felt like a terrible mother when I insisted on doing certain things on my own, even though I could’ve asked for help.

(O)That doesn’t make you a terrible mother, honey, we women can be stubborn.

(J)That’s very true, as mothers we want to be independent when we’re pregnant.

(O)That’s right, I was the same way, but my Merig insisted he help me through both pregnancies.

(Msr)[sigh] She insisted on doing everything. I at least wanted to help her to the bathroom when I knew she was struggling to walk without help. I didn’t think less of her as a mother or a wife, so don’t be too hard on yourself, Kate, you’re doing a wonderful job. I’m sure Merig insists on helping you as well.

(K)He does, and I really appreciate it. I’m learning to accept the help and not be so stubborn, especially so close to when I’m supposed to give birth.

(A)Remember, it’s not just Merig willing to help, it’s all of us if Merig isn’t around.

(EM)Yeah, don’t be afraid to ask one of us if you need to go to the bathroom at the pub or when it’s just us women hanging out like you did the other day. We didn’t mind helping you at all.

(O)Exactly, no shame in admitting you need help when you can’t do something completely on your own.

(K)Thank you all. I don’t know what I would do without you all in my life. I’m ready to have this baby. He’ll be so cute.

(O)They are absolutely precious when they’re infants, you’ll see for yourself.

(K)I’ve seen goblin infants before, and I think they’re cute. I’m sure I’ll love him the way he is, just like I love Merig the way he is.

(O)When it comes to your children, you’ll love them no matter what they look like. You’ll think they are the most beautiful thing to exist. You’ll fall in love instantly when he’s born.

(K)I know I will. I loved him as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I’ve spent all this time singing and talking to my belly, and I know he hears me and Merig talking to him. He’s heard everyone else talking to him out here. He’s been active and letting me know he’s healthy…it pulls at my heartstrings as well and I hope he loves me as his mother, even though I don’t look like him.

(O)Oh sweetheart, that little boy will love you and create a stronger bond with you when he’s born. That’s something that will be important to him as your son. He will find comfort in your arms when you hold him. Sustenance in the milk you produce in your breasts, the soothing sound of your voice that will put him to sleep. The bond he will form with you by the touch of your skin to his, and the love he will feel when you kiss his little forehead. Not to mention, the light that your smile will bring to him when he looks at you. He will know you are his mother, but he will also know that you don’t look the same, but he will still love you as his mother. That’s special to us as mothers and you’ll soon understand it.

Kate's smile falters, her eyes welling up with tears as mixed emotions swirl inside her. She gazes down at her swollen belly, her hands instinctively cradling it as if to soothe the life within. Orla and Joanna exchange worried glances, their faces etched with concern, as Kate's tears begin to fall. Orla and Joanna close in, offering comfort and support, their voices soft and reassuring. Kate's body shudders as she surrenders to her emotions, her tears flowing like a river. She takes a deep breath, steadying herself, as she gently wipes away the tears, her eyes still shining with vulnerability. Joanna's voice is laced with empathy and concern as she reaches out to Kate, her words a gentle prompt for Kate to share her feelings.

(J)What’s wrong, baby? Tell your mother what’s on your mind.

(O)I’m sorry if I upset you, sweetheart.

(K)[sniffles] No, it’s not you. I hate crying in front of people, but I’m sure it’s my pregnancy hormones getting to me. I just keep thinking, I couldn’t save my first son, and that’s what makes me feel like I’m a terrible mother. But I didn’t even know I was pregnant at the time, because of all the stress I was under trying to get away from Sean. I’m sorry for getting emotional, but I do hold some guilt for not leaving him sooner.

(A)Honey, you didn’t even know you were pregnant. How could you have done anything wrong?

(K)Because if not for my baby, then I should’ve left Sean for my own sake. When he started becoming possessive and controlling, that was my fault and I should’ve left him. I should’ve swallowed my pride and asked for help, and I would’ve had that child. But I will still love Nevan, don’t get me wrong, I just should’ve done more for my first son like I’ve done for Nevan. Had I met Merig sooner, none of that would’ve happened. But like you always tell me, Mom, things happen for a reason.

(J)That’s right, we may not like what happens, and terrible things can occur. What happened with Sean shouldn’t have happened, and he’s put away for life. But you’re here now. You found Merig, and he’s been nothing but wonderful to you and us. You got married and now here you are, you’ve conceived Nevan together. You cared not about Merig being a goblin, you still love him, and now you will love this child like you would a human child.

(T)And we will love him too, pumpkin. Everything has changed and you have a better life here, the one you deserved in the beginning. Life teaches us things we may not understand right away, but later on, it becomes clearer once things work out for the better.

(Msr)He’s right, Kate. Orla and I never wanted to be separated from our sons, but it happened, unfortunately. But Orla and I finally lived in peace, but we still missed Merig and Barth painfully. But we were so glad to hear that our sons were alive and well, so we came here, as you know. We are so happy to be here with them after so long and to know they were taken care of by loving humans was an immense relief to us.

(O)Now we get to be in their lives again and we are going to be grandparents. That’s the most important thing to us. I feel we’re terrible parents for leaving for Belvast, but we wanted to live in peace until we could set out to find our sons. I cried a lot because I missed them, but I still continued to live my life, hoping they were okay. You're not a terrible mother, Kate, things happen that are out of your control. You've overcome so much from what you told us and I think you're a strong person. I see how much you and my son love each other, and how happy you are. Keep being strong, not just for you, but for Nevan. You have us to help you, especially Merig.

(K)[sniffles] Merig has made me stronger than I've ever been. I love him so much. Sometimes I just need to cry, it helps me. But you're right, things happen, and I have to move on from the bad things. My first son’s memory will live on in my heart, but I have to focus on Nevan. He needs me. I'll be the best mother I can be for him. I just hope I don't screw up.

(G)I think you'll do just fine, Kate, you and Merig both.

(EM)Yeah, we believe in you, and you're not alone. You'll be the best mom in the world to your son.

(A)Absolutely, your motherly instincts will activate and you'll know exactly what to do.

(O)She’s right, it just comes naturally, remember?

(Msr)I’m sure you're ready to give birth, Kate. It won't be long now.

(K)Yes, I’m ready. This will be a new chapter in my life and I'm happier than I've ever been thanks to everyone. I can't tell you how grateful I am. I don't know what I would do without you all. Even you, Orla, and Merig Senior. I'm happy you're in our lives. Thank you.

(Msr)We should be thanking you and Merig for letting us be a part of your life, and Nevan’s. You’re the perfect daughter-in-law and you’ll be the perfect mother to him.

(O)I couldn’t agree more, my love, the time is drawing closer.

(K)Merig thinks I’ll go into labor early. I’m just mentally preparing myself if that happens.

(A)We’ll be there when it does, hon, we just have to keep an eye on you in case your water breaks.

(K)I hope it doesn’t happen at an inconvenient time, that would be embarrassing.

(O)There’s nothing to be embarrassed about, dear, it’ll happen when it’s time, you never know.

(K)You’re right, I’m just nervous. I hope we can get to the healer in time.

(G)Don’t worry, I’ve already got a plan. I’ll have a horse and a cart to take you there. In fact, once we’re done here, I’ll take us all to the pub, so you aren’t walking too far.

(K)[smiles] You’re the hero once again, Gordo, I appreciate it.

(G)[chuckles] Anything I can do to help, but for now, I think we can keep training. Are you up for it, Emerald?

(EM)Sure thing, let’s do it.

(G)Alright, prepare to be amazed once again, everyone.

(K)You two have fun.

As Gordo and Emerald rise from their seats, they head back to the armory, their footsteps echoing through the grounds to collect their safety gear and continue their rigorous daily training. Meanwhile, in the forest, Merig, Barth, and Larry complete their individual patrol routes, their horse's hooves, and their footsteps quiet on the forest floor. Today, the forest is quiet, the only signs of life are the chirping birds and the gentle hum of insects. The goblins' keen eyes scan the surroundings, their senses on high alert, but so far, no signs of bandits to disturb the peaceful scene. The trees stand tall, their leaves rustling softly in the breeze, as the trio meets at their usual rendezvous point to converse.

(M)No bandits today?

(B)Nope, not one.

(L)There was none where I checked, and the traps weren’t even set off. Even Ash said it was odd when she came out to dispose of the activated ones, but there were none. All of them were still set.

(M)Odd, that’s never happened before.

(L)No matter, I’m sure the bandits are just taking a vacation.

(B)As if bandits ever do that, but it’s not impossible.

(M)I’ll be starting my vacation today, Kate should be going into labor pretty soon. I want to be prepared and present in case that happens.

(L)Don’t worry about it, pal. Barth and I have everything under control. We’re prepared to take over the patrol rounds when it’s time.

(B)Yeah, you have nothing to worry about, little brother, just focus on you, Kate, and Nevan.

(M)I just hope we’re prepared for when it happens.

(L)Gordo said he’ll have a cart and horse on site everywhere Kate goes today. They’re at the training grounds right now, but they’ll be taking the cart and horse when they leave, and most likely to the pub.

(B)We’ll be heading there anyway when we’re done, so she’ll be there with everyone else.

(M)She’s been really anxious still, but she’s a lot better than she was yesterday. Although she did get emotional last night before bed, she's still worried, regardless.

(L)Cut her some slack, Merig. I can understand her fears.

(B)It’s a good thing it isn’t stressing her out too badly. It’s okay for her to be scared. It’s normal for women to be scared when they’re pregnant.

(M)Yeah, I’ll do what I can to calm her like I told her. I’m just nervous myself.

(B)It’ll be okay, this is going to be stressful for you both as new parents. Just breathe and everything will be okay.

(M)[sigh] Right, I just have to stay calm for Kate so she doesn’t stress out.

(B)Exactly, everything will go smoothly.

(L)Just a thought. I know it’s off-topic. But was Cormac serious about leaving the guards?

(M)He said he’s been thinking about it. I honestly don’t blame him for wanting to, so he can spend time with Deirdre and take care of her while she’s pregnant. She would need him to do heavy lifting at home and at the flower shop.

(B)I think it’s great that they want to open the shop together with their names attached to it. Silvia would be proud to see Deirdre taking over and running the place with Cormac.

(L)Yeah, I’m sure they’ll have fun doing it. I’m just glad her parents weren’t able to take it from her. Those scumbags don’t deserve anything from Silvia. She worked her ass off at that shop and Deirdre and Cormac will be doing the same in her honor.

(M)Agreed, they’ll do great keeping the place going. They’ve made some cosmetic changes to make the place look beautiful, not that it didn’t before.

(B)We get it. It’s a beautiful place regardless, and it will be their home and their income. Those two will take good care of the shop.

(L)Absolutely, they seem very happy and that makes me happy as well. I know not too long ago, we were enemies, but I’m glad things happened the way they did. I still cared about Cormac even before he begged for forgiveness.

(B)I did too. I was hoping he would change, and he did. We all forgave him and he proved himself to be a better person. He fell in love and is doing great things here. He deserves the time off and the happiness he has with Deirdre.

(M)I’m glad I forgave him, and glad things happened how they did as well. He saved my life, and Kate and Nevan’s life, and so did Gordo. They are a part of the family and I’m more than okay with that. I’m also glad we’re not stuck in a bandit hideout anymore and we’re living peacefully here.

(B)Yeah, Mom and Dad found us and they’re living here too. I missed them, and Tom and Jo are going to be moving here after Nevan is born. You can’t get any better than that. I’m with the love of my life. Larry and Ash are married, Cormac and Deirdre are getting married and are going to be parents, and Merig and Kate will be parents very soon. Life is perfect.

(L)That it is, pal, and it all started here in this beautiful city, with a human falling in love with a goblin. It got better from there. It feels like it’s been one big adventure.

(M)You’re absolutely right, buddy, I feel lucky and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. We’re all here and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My beautiful wife and mother of my child, my best friend, my brother, our parents, our in-laws, and our friends. You’re right, Barth, and I’ve said the same thing. Life is perfect.

The tranquil atmosphere is shattered by the crunching of autumn leaves and the thud of horse's hooves, signaling the approach of an unknown entity. Merig, Barth, and Larry instinctively turn towards the sound, their eyes narrowing as they draw their weapons, ready for a potential threat. The rustling of leaves grows louder, and a figure emerges from the underbrush, hands raised in a calming gesture. As the figure comes into view, the goblins' tense postures relax, their weapons lowering in unison. Ingo, the familiar bandit, brings his horse to a stop before them, a disarming smile spreading across his face. Merig's expression, however, remains puzzled, his brow furrowed in confusion, his voice laced with a mix of curiosity and wariness.

(M)Ingo, is that you?

(I)Hey, Merig, it’s been a while, glad to see you’re okay since I last saw you.

(M)It’s thanks to you that I am. You helped my wife and everyone else to find me and bring me back home.

(I)Tara needs you. I never got to apologize for what happened. I didn’t know that man had bad intentions, especially not with you and your wife. Had I known, I wouldn’t have helped him.

(M)No need to apologize, everything is just fine here and I’m doing great. That man is locked up in the queen’s prison and will be there for life, with the weekly beatings and torture.

(I)Sucks to be him, but I’m glad you got justice, and he’s rotting there. I hear that prison is a scary place, so I better be good, huh?

(M)[chuckles] I guess so, as long as you all don’t bother us.

(I)Nah, I don’t plan on it, the bandits are staying at the camp.

(L)It’s funny how we haven’t seen any lately.

(B)Yeah, we were beginning to worry.

(I)Yeah, about that, I heard your wife is about to give birth to your child, Merig. I figured I would give you all a break and call off my bandits for the time being. You’ve got a child to raise so you don’t need the extra stress.

(M)Yeah, she’s due any day now and I’m really excited

(I)I bet you are, congratulations to you and your wife.

(M)Thanks, would you like to meet him?

(I)Are you sure? I don’t want to be a bad influence on him.

(M)I'm sure it'll be fine, just meeting him won’t be a crime.

(I)[smiles] Yeah, I’d like to meet him. I’m sure he’ll grow up to be just like his father.

(M)I want him to be his own person. He can follow in my footsteps if he chooses.

(I)Have you thought of a name yet?

(M)His name will be Nevan Flynn. Kate chose it.

(I)That’s a noble name, it suits him. I’m sure he’ll do great things, and I wish nothing but the best for you and your wife.

(M)Thanks, he’ll be a wonderful son, we look forward to his arrival.

(I)I’m just glad you’re both alright, and I’m glad everyone else is okay and living a good life.

(M)You know, you could always leave the camp and come here and live a good life too. There’s always room in the Royal Guards. Fomors are welcome.

(I)[chuckles] It’s possible, I have been thinking about things lately and whether I want to continue being a bandit. But for now, I just came to give you my best wishes for your family.

(M)Thanks, Ingo, that means a lot. The queen will be holding a ceremony for Nevan. You're always welcome to attend.

(I)Actually, I’d like to, I don’t see why I can’t, other than the fact that I’m a bandit.

(B)I don’t think it’ll matter. As long as you don’t cause trouble, we’ll vouch for you.

(I)Of course not, this is a special time for you all. I’ll be there, no need to worry about me, I’ll behave.

(L)Sounds good. We look forward to seeing you there.

(I)How’s Cormac?

(M)He’s doing great, he’s engaged to a woman, and she’s pregnant as well. She’s pretty early along, but they’re both excited. They’ll be planning the wedding pretty soon.

(I)[smiles] That’s great to hear, I’m glad he’s doing alright. Tell him I said congratulations, and I’ll see him soon.

(B)I’m sure he’d appreciate that, Gordo is doing good as well. He’s training a new recruit who’s also a martial artist. She’s been doing great so far. I think they’re getting along just fine.[smirk]

(I)[chuckles] He’ll probably fall in love soon too, but I’m glad he’s happy.

(B)I fell in love as well, so everyone is happy.

(I)I’m glad, it’s good to see you guys again, I just wanted to stop by and say what I had to. I heard you got married to that alchemist woman, Larry.

(L)That’s right, she’s my red hot flame, and I made her my wife. So you and your bandits better be nice to her while she’s out here, got it?[smirk]

(I)Of course, I wish nothing but the best for you both too. I hope you get blessed with a child as well.

(L)That’s what I’m hoping for.

(I)Just have one of the bandits send me a message while you’re out here when your son is born and let me know when the ceremony will be.

(M)Will do. Thanks for stopping by, Ingo. We’ll see you at the ceremony.

(I)Give everyone my regards, I’m thinking a lot about things. Expect to hear from me even after the ceremony.

(M)Sounds good. You can even join us in giving that man his beatings every week at the prison.

(I)That sounds like a lot of fun. It was good to see you all again. I better get going. But first, I have a gift for you to give to Kate.

(M)Oh really?

(I)She still wears the necklace you gave her. It’s in the shape of the moon, right?

(M)Yeah, why?

Eager to present his offering, Ingo guides his horse closer, his hand extended, holding a delicate object. Merig, curiosity piqued, opens his hand, and Ingo places the item in his palm. Merig's eyes widen as he lifts the gift, a stunning necklace with a star-shaped pendant suspended from a slender silver chain, glinting in the soft light. Merig's face breaks into a warm smile as he admires the necklace, his fingers tracing the intricate design. With a sense of gratitude, he pockets the gift, his eyes meeting Ingo's, shining with appreciation.

(M)Thanks, Ingo, Kate will love it. Nevan will be our star, so it fits the theme.

(I)I thought you would like it. She can wear it along with her moon necklace.

(M)She’ll appreciate it.

(I)I should head back to the camp. Best wishes to you all.

(B)Thanks for the gift. We’ll see you later, Ingo.

(L)Later, Ingo.

(M)I look forward to hearing from you, Ingo.

(I)I’ll see you all later.

The four goblins share a warm smile, and a moment of camaraderie before Ingo turns his horse and urges it forward, galloping away into the forest's depths, the bandit camp awaiting his return. Merig, Larry, and Barth complete their patrol rounds, their duties fulfilled, and head back to the city, eager to reunite with their friends. Meanwhile, at the flower shop, Deirdre and Cormac work in harmony, their brushes dancing across the canvas as they paint the new sign. The sweet scent of blooming flowers fills the air, mingling with the smell of fresh paint. The sign's letters take shape, proclaiming the shop's new name: Love Me Forever, owned by Cormac and Deirdre Giffin. Their names entwined like the tender shoots of a rose bush, a testament to the couple's partnership in love and business.

(DD)It’s looking beautiful, my love, it’ll be perfect. But we’re not married yet, so we would have to put the new sign up after we get married.

(C)That’s true, but it’s good to have it for when the time comes. We don't have to put it up right away. I just wanted to get it done, so it's less that we have to worry about. Besides, it won't be a big deal if we do put it up for everyone to see beforehand. I already plan on marrying you anyway, so it's okay if people see the sign with our names on it as husband and wife.

(DD)[smiles] You're absolutely right. I want people to know that I will have a wonderful husband who will always love me.

(C)And I want people to know that I'll have a wife that I will always love, and that will always love me.

(DD)I love you, Mic.

(C)I love you too, sunflower.

(DD)I know we only talked to Merig yesterday about our plans. But have you figured out if you want to stay in the guards?

(C)I thought about it, and I think I'll stay in the guards. I originally came here to redeem myself and I swore to protect the city. I intend on keeping my promise, but I have decided that I'll only be fighting bandits if I'm needed. That way, I can still be there and be here with you and Connor when I’m needed here.

(DD)I think that's a great idea, just don't overburden yourself, honey, okay?

(C)Sweetheart, when it comes to you, I'm never overburdened. I want to be there with you as a husband and a father to Connor. Merig even said he'll be taking time off to take care of Kate and Nevan. You and I both will be raising our son, so I want to be present so he can bond with both of us.

(DD)Okay, my love, whatever you choose to do, I'll support you either way.

(C)Remember, you come first before anything, and Merig understands that, being a husband and father as well.

(DD)He understands regardless, Merig is just that caring and gracious, especially to the people he cares about. He seems to care about you a lot, Cormac.

(C)I care about him too. He’s like a brother to me. All the other goblins are.

(DD)We love them all. Kate and the other women are wonderful and they’re amazing friends. They’re like sisters to me.

(C)Oh, Merig did mention that we have to meet with the queen so that we can receive our marriage license since we’re engaged now.

(DD)That’s right, all you have to do is write a letter to her and let one of the guards know and they’ll deliver it to her.

(C)I’ll write that letter tonight, or we can write it together.

(DD)[smiles] That sounds wonderful. I want to spend all this time with you if I can. I’m very excited, and I feel a lot better since we talked about my grieving. I’m not alone. I have the love and light of my life.

(C)[smiles] And I have my beautiful bright sunflower. You’re never alone and I’m glad I could help you smile again. That’s all I want for you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and you’ll always be my light in the darkness.

(DD)We’ll shine brightly together so the darkness can’t hide from us and there will be none left in our world. As long as I’m with you, I’ll always smile and be happy. Not just me, but Connor, too.

(C)You’ll both be my world and my reason for living. I’ll never be miserable with you both here in my life.

(DD)I’ll never be miserable either, and no one can take you away from me.

(C)And no one can take you away from me. You’re all mine and I’m all yours.

(DD)Yes, my love, I belong to you and I’ll always be with you. I never want to leave you for anything, unless you hurt me.

(C)You know damn well that’ll never happen, sweetheart. Love will be the only thing I ever give you as long as I live. I know we haven’t gotten married yet, but I vowed to you a long time ago to always love you and never hurt you.

(DD)I know you did, Mic, and I promised the same. I owe you everything for being my light. We’ve both kept our promises to each other so far.

(C)Yes, we have. In all honesty, I thought you were going to believe Victoria, and it was a mistake to think that.

(DD)And here I was worried that you would be upset with me for believing her for a second that you would betray my love.

(C)That’s why I said you had nothing to worry about. I want nothing to do with her. I’m sorry that I thought for a second that you would betray my love as well. That was the least of my worries. My biggest worry was losing you and never seeing you again. I would’ve taken you back immediately if you were fooled by her and realized she was wrong. Unlike her, who continued to believe Sean and never made the effort to find me, all because I became a bandit.

(DD)It’s okay, Mic, I guess we were both wrong. Actions speak louder than words. But I was right to put all my love, faith, and trust in you. Despite my fear, I never doubted you even before everything happened.

(C)I never doubted you either, but it was Victoria that I didn’t trust. She’s a manipulative person, and I realized that. She tried deceiving you and she failed miserably.

(DD)She did because I know you and you would’ve never said the horrible things she claimed you did. I thought to myself, “This doesn’t sound like my Mic at all, he loves me more than anything”.

(C)You were right to listen to your own instinct. I thought to myself that you weren’t that naïve to believe what she was saying. She’s a good manipulator, but you saw right through her.

(DD)I did, and that just shows how connected we are. My love for you is too strong, and it made me see through her and her lies.

(C)I guess we are connected in some way. My love for you is strong enough to know that you wouldn’t have believed her. But I don’t fault you for almost being deceived. We were both fooled, my sunflower, but I never doubted your love for me.

(DD)I never doubted your love for me, either. It seems your love is strong enough to keep David from coming back into my life, as well as my parents. I want nothing to do with either of them. They’re horrible people and I won’t stand for the vitriol they spewed about you and me.

(C)I won’t either, which is why I did what I did in both instances. I know hitting David it wasn’t the best thing to do, but no one talks to you like that, not even me.

(DD)I know, my love, you’re so good to me. But none of that matters anymore. Now we have to think about our future and it’s looking brighter.

(C)[smiles] That could just be because you’re here.

(DD)[smiles] You’re here too, which makes it so much better with the both of us, remember?

(C)Of course, I’ll never forget. My life…our life will be perfect, not that it isn’t already.

(DD)You’re absolutely right, Mic, just you and me and the family we have.

(C)That’s all I need. Let’s finish this sign. I have the perfect idea of how to decorate it.

(DD)[gasp] We can paint sunflowers on it!

(C)[chuckles] You read my mind. We can also paint the seeds.

(DD)That’s perfect, let’s do it! Then we can head to the pub for lunch. I want to see how Kate is doing. She said any day now she should be in labor.

(C)Of course, it’s getting closer and we want to be there in case anything happens.

(DD)Last I heard, she was at the training grounds with her parents, Merig and Barth’s parents, and Ash, watching Gordo and Emerald spar.

(C)That’ll be fun to see. Now that I think about it, I think I know what the theme of our wedding will be.

(DD)[smiles] Sunflowers. I love that idea, my love. We still have sunflowers in the garden we can use for decorations and my bouquet. It’ll be a single sunflower, but it’ll be beautiful.

(C)It will be, and so will you. I can’t wait to marry you. I know I’ve said that a lot. We’ll start planning real soon.

(DD)Yes, we will, and next spring, we can harvest more sunflowers for the garden.

(C)That’s a great idea. It’ll be our little tradition each year and it’ll be the theme of the shop if you want it to be.

(DD)[giggles] I love that more than anything. I’m so excited. I’m smiling again, all thanks to you, my love. Thank you.

(C)No, thank you, for always loving me.

(DD)Of course, I don’t think I’ll ever stop.

(C)I won’t ever stop either. Also, it’s good to see you happy again. I was worried about you, but let’s get this painted. I’m having a lot of fun.

(DD)[smiles] Me too, don’t worry about me. Next time I’ll do better at letting you know what’s wrong and I won’t worry about being a burden.

(C)Good, ‘cause you’re never a burden, you’re the woman I love.

(DD)And you’re the goblin I love. Let’s have some fun painting and go eat lunch.

(C)Alright, that sounds like a plan.

Cormac and Deirdre's creative collaboration continues as they finish painting the vibrant sign, their artistic endeavors culminating in a beautiful masterpiece. With the task complete, they head to the training grounds, eager to join their friends. Upon arrival, they observe Gordo and Emerald's intense sparring session, their movements a blur of skill and precision. Afterward, they unwind in the resting area, sharing stories and laughter. As the group prepares to depart, Gordo and Cormac venture to the stables, retrieving a sturdy cart and horse to transport their merry band to the pub. The others climb aboard, a lively entourage, as they make their way through the streets. At the pub, they converge with Merig, Barth, and Larry, their usual table awaiting their arrival. The group settles in, surrounded by the warm atmosphere and savory aromas, as they indulge in a delightful lunch together. Sarah joins the gathering, her presence a welcome addition, as they all revel in each other's company, their conversations filling the air.

(S)How are you feeling today, Kate?

(K)I’m feeling pretty good, actually. Gordo insisted on having a cart and horse waiting outside just in case since it’s so close to my due date. Nessa said anything can happen between now and then.

(S)She’s right, better safe than sorry. I’m glad you’re feeling well. Are you still worried?

(K)[smiles] No, I trust you and Nessa and everyone else that will be there by my side. I’m feeling more positive about this birth. I’m not as anxious as I was.

(S)That’s good. You always want to keep a calm mind when you're in labor. I can always give you a pain-reducing potion. It’s safe for you and Nevan.

(K)I’ll probably take it beforehand. I’m actually more excited than anything. I want to meet my son and hold him so he can feel my love and warmth.

(S)Skin-to-skin contact is always good for the mother and the infant. It helps soothe the child and can even be beneficial in other ways and helps create the bond between you two.

(K)Which is why I’m excited. I may have lost a child, but this one is just as special and loved. Nevan needs me and I want to be the mother he deserves and the mother I want to be to him.

(J)I’m so proud of you, baby, you look like you’re calmer.

(K)Well, as usual, Merig eased my mind and I do feel better. I just got emotional earlier because I still have some guilt that I need to let go of.

(A)And as always, Merig is your hero. He’s still the only one that can calm you.

(K)[smiles] You’re not wrong, he is my peace and tranquility. He takes away my fears and fills me with happiness. I love you, my earth.

(M)I love you too, my moon, you are my peace as well and I’m never afraid because of you in my life you.

(K)I know I was afraid of this particular situation, but you took that away once again. I can’t tell you how grateful I am. But that’s what love does, remember?

(M)You’re absolutely right, sweetheart, but I have a feeling and it’s been eating at me.

(K)What is it, my love?

(M)I just have a feeling that your due date will be sooner than expected.

(K)What makes you say that?

(M)I’m not sure, it’s just a nagging feeling I’m getting. Have you felt any pain?

(K)No, my water hasn’t broken either. But it’s possible it can happen, like Nessa said.

(B)We’ll keep an eye on her, little brother, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered, sis.

(K)I know you all do, and I’m so happy you’re all here. I can’t wait for the ceremony.

(M)Oh, that reminds me, you’ll never believe who visited while we were out on patrol.

(K)Who?

(M)Ingo, he came to talk to us. We haven’t seen many bandits because he figured we would need a break from them for a while. Apparently, our conversations out there caught the attention of the bandits and they’ve relayed the info to Ingo. He gave us his best wishes, and he even wants to attend the ceremony. I told him he was welcome as long as he behaved himself.

(K)I wouldn’t mind, he helped us rescue you, so he’s more than welcome.

(M)Also, he talked about coming to Tara and living here in peace with us.

(K)[smiles] Sounds good to me, he’ll love it here.

(M)He will. Oh, and he gave this to us to give to you as a gift, here…

(K)[gasp] A necklace! And it’s a star. Oh my goodness, this is perfect! I’ll put it on right now.

(M)He said it was a gift to go with your moon pendant.

(K)Oh, it’s so beautiful, I’ll have to thank him when he attends the ceremony.

(M)He also asked about Cormac, and we told him you were happy and found love. He said congratulations on being a father as well and your engagement.

(C)[chuckles] Of course he did. Does he want to join the guards?

(M)Actually, he did mention it and he’s considering it.

(G)I wouldn’t mind, I’ll train him too, we can spar together with Emerald. But I honestly wouldn’t trust anyone else to spar with Emerald, so I may just train him separately. Don’t worry, Emerald, I’ll still be able to train you. I’m still your mentor.

(EM)Fine by me. I’m sure he’ll be a good sparring partner, depending on what weapon he uses.

(C)He’s a mana gun user, so he’s a ranged fighter, just like Merig, Barth, and I.

(EM)Oh, that will be fun, he’ll need duds for training so no one gets hurt.

(M)Luckily we have that implemented if he does decide to come here.

(G)We’ll see what he decides to do, but that means the bandits will choose another leader. Or they might just work together as a collective, which gives us more of a challenge.

(L)Hey, with a full team, we’ll be just fine. Once Emerald is trained, she’ll be strong enough. If Ingo decides to join us, that’ll be fine, too.

(EM)I’m enjoying the workouts with Gordo, I feel I’m getting stronger already.

(B)We love to hear that. Keep up the work and you’ll be kicking ass in no time.

(EM)I look forward to it.

(C)Oh, speaking of which, I’ve decided what I want to do. I thought it over and I think I want to stay in the guards. But would it be possible to just be there part-time?

(M)I think we can arrange something, but yes, it’s possible.

(C)I just think it’s fair that I stay since that was my original goal to redeem myself.

(K)But we forgave you, Cormac. Your work in the guards is practically done.

(C)Not to me, I really enjoy being a part of it, regardless. Being a part of it reminds me of the things I’ve done to better myself. Also, if I want to be a beneficial influence on my son, I’ll continue fighting and protecting the city.

(K)That’s why we love you, Cormac, and that’s why we forgave you. You’re determined, and that’s admirable.

(C)Well, you’re like family to me, so of course I’m determined to continue protecting everyone. I just hope Deirdre still loves me for it.

(DD)Of course, my love, I support you one million percent, and I will still love you no matter what you decide.

(M)But I’m sure you’ll be spending a lot of time with Deirdre, so we’ll only call on you if we need you. Deirdre needs you, and so does your son.

(C)Thank you, we’re forever grateful to have you all in our lives.

(K)We’re grateful to you as well, Cormac, don’t forget you and Gordo became heroes.

(G)You remind us every time, Kate, you won’t let us forget.

(K)Absolutely not, Gordo. Everyone knows of your bravery and one day you’ll be knighted.

(M)Actually, the queen wants to hold a ceremony to do just that. She wants to knight all of my higher-ups. The lieutenant, the sergeant, and even the captain.

(B)Oh, that’s the dream, little brother. I’m sure we’ll get to wear badass armor.

(L)That would be nice, wouldn't it? The armor, the title, the recognition as Fomors, and the respect, and the victory of winning our women’s hearts. But most of all, the work that comes with it, knowing that we’re protecting people. That includes our own loved ones closest to us.

(M)Eirawen even talked about knighting our very own royal alchemist.

(A)Me? But I’m just a royal alchemist. I’m not even a guard, technically.

(M)She still knows you do the work and help us, and technically, that’s how you maintain your title as a royal alchemist, remember?

(A)Right but, I figured the “knight” title was reserved for guards.

(M)There isn’t anything that says it’s exclusive to guards. So there’s no rule that says you can’t be a knight, Ash.

(K)Dame Ashley Dugan, Royal Alchemist of the Royal Guards of Tara.

(A)[smiles] That’s a long title, but you know what? I like it. It would be an honor to be knighted.

(M)I could even officially make you part of the guards.

(A)I mean, I’ve pretty much established myself as a guard. I’m still just a royal alchemist, but people can still refer to me as a guard if they so choose.

(L)But we’ll be knights together, my red hot flame. How amazing would that be?

(A)It does sound great, and if Eirawen decides to knight me, I’ll be happy.

(B)It does sound great, doesn’t it? We’ll all be equals in the guards and we’ll kick ass together as friends and family.

(G)It’ll be fun. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

(C)Me either, this is home.

(M)I couldn’t agree more, and Dad will be joining us, right?

(Msr)Of course, son, I’ll need to train for it, but it should be no problem. But you already have Emerald still in training and potentially another one, so I’ll just wait in line and relax for as long as I can before I get started.

(M)Sounds good to me.

(C)Also, Deirdre and I will start planning our wedding soon. I want you all to be a part of it. Our theme will be none other than sunflowers. You all know the story of when Deirdre and I first met, and sunflowers seem to be a pattern in our life together. Sunflowers are also a symbol of endless happiness, which is what I set out to achieve after leaving the bandit hideout. Deirdre caught my eye, and I just had to tell her how beautiful I thought she was.

(K)[smiles] I remember you telling me, I thought it was so cute, my heart just melted. Who knew that you’d meet again one day?

(C)I was hoping I would. I only went to the shop at the time for sunflower seeds, so I didn’t think I’d see her again.

(J)That’s so sweet, and I think it’s so charming that you both met and danced at Kate and Merig’s reception too.

(DD)Well, I took that initiative because I did want to see him again, and even after the reception, I wanted to continue seeing him. Now look where we are.

(C)I’m still convinced you would’ve hated me after I rejected you.

(O)Well, when you’re in love with someone, you love them. There’s a difference. Even so, rejection wouldn’t make you hate the person you truly love. When you said she came to see you at the healer when your wound got worse, that right there is love. She still cared about you to make sure you were okay.

(DD)She’s not wrong. I fell in love with you even more when we danced at the wedding reception. So the love I had for you was already established. I just wanted to get to know you more, and I did.

(C)I realized that a long time ago before we confessed our love to each other. Like you said earlier, actions speak louder than words and you showed me more than once that you love me, even before you told me you did.

(DD)That’s right, and you did the same.

(K)You two are so cute. I’d love to take you shopping for your wedding dress, Deirdre. What kind of dress do you want to wear?

(DD)Well, since our wedding will be sunflower-themed, I’d like my dress to resemble that.

(K)You would look so cute in a dress like that, you can always get one custom-made.

(DD)I was thinking that. I'll see what my options are first before I order a custom one. But that would take a while and I want to have our wedding at the beginning of spring if we can do that.

(K)Absolutely, you’ll have a spring wedding just like Merig and I did. It’s going to be beautiful.

(DD)My belly will be pretty big by then, but that’s okay. I’ll wear a comfy dress.

(K)You’ll look beautiful, regardless.

(DD)Kate, will you be my maid of honor?

(K)Me? Oh honey, are you sure? After this baby, I’m not sure if I’ll look good in a dress.

(A)You stop it, you’ll look great in a dress, Kate. Your belly was showing when you were the maid of honor at my wedding, so shut your face.

(K)[sigh] I just don’t want people to see my stretch marks. They’re becoming more visible.

(DD)That’s okay, Kate, you’ll still look beautiful, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

(J)Those stretch marks are just proof that you birthed a beautiful son.

(T)We’ll even hold him for you during the ceremony.

(K)Hopefully, Nevan doesn’t cry in the middle of it. I would feel so embarrassed.

(O)It’ll be okay, we’ll help soothe him if he gets fussy. I know just the trick to calm a tiny goblin.

(J)Then I guess we’ll leave that to you, Orla, but you and Merig Senior can be sitting with us if you want.

(Msr)I’m sure that would help ease Kate’s mind until the ceremony is over.

(K)Yeah, that would, if Deirdre is okay with Nevan being there.

(DD)He’s more than welcome there. The grandparents will have it under control if he gets fussy, and they'll keep him occupied.

(C)It should be fine, he’s family, so he has a right to be there.

(DD)Exactly, the wedding will be perfect either way. Ash and Sarah can be bridesmaids and Emerald, would you like to be a bridesmaid too?

(EM)...You want me at the wedding?

(DD)Absolutely, you’re part of this friend group. I’d love to have you as a bridesmaid.

(EM)I don’t really know how good I’ll look in a dress, I don’t really wear them.

(A)Oh honey, you’re a beautiful woman. You’ll look stunning in a dress.

(DD)Definitely, are you okay with wearing one?

(EM)Sure, I’ll wear one. I’m curious to see how I’ll look.

(DD)Perfect, we’ll all go dress shopping together soon.

(K)Sounds like fun.

(C)And Merig, would you be the best man?

(M)[smiles] Sure thing, buddy, I’d be happy to.

(C)The rest of the goblins can be groomsmen if you want to.

(L)I’d love to, you were one at my wedding, so I owe you.

(B)Of course, I’ll be a part of it, we’ll have fun.

(G)You know I will be. You don’t even have to ask.

(C)Thank you, it’ll be fun and I want to have the reception in the forest. We can set up a big tent for all the attendees, and the guards can stand watch for bandits. We know just the spot where we want it to be.

(M)That sounds like a great idea, an outdoor reception.

(C)Oh, we want the wedding in the same tent as well. Deirdre and I figured it would be easier that way, and it’s where we confessed our love. You and Kate inspired us when we chose the spot, Merig.

(K)That’s so sweet, it’ll be a fun wedding. I can cook for you if you want me to.

(DD)No, I’ll have that taken care of. You’ll be relaxing with me and the other women and having a lot of fun.

(K)[sigh] Alright, but you won’t be able to have my cooking that you love so much.

(DD)[giggles] True, but you get a break for once, ma’am. I do appreciate your offering, though. We’re going to have a lot of fun planning.

(A)Hell yeah, another wedding will be fun.

(DD)We hope some of my family will attend. A few of them wrote to me and told me how horrible my parents were for how they behaved at Gram’s funeral. They said they’d love to attend the wedding. So I know where to send invitations.

(C)Sounds good, and we can invite some people here to Tara.

(DD)Of course, I’m looking forward to it. I just hope when I order my dress, I won’t show too much when my belly gets bigger. I may order one that won’t constrict my belly.

(K)That’s a good idea. It can be done. Allison is just the person to talk to. She’ll be happy to help you with customizing your dress.

(DD)Wonderful, thank you all for being a part of it. It means a lot.

(K)Of course, we’re more than happy to…[winces] Oh wow.

(M)Sweetheart, what’s wrong?

(A)Are you okay, hon?

(K)Yeah, I just got the sudden urge to go to the bathroom.

(A)Okay, I’ll help you.

(K)Are you sure?

(A)This is an emergency, so come on.

(K)Of course, thanks, Ash.

(A)Think nothing of it, let’s go.

Ashley swiftly rises from her seat, concern etched on her face, and rushes to Kate's side, offering a supportive arm to help her up. Together, they hasten towards the bathroom, their pace urgent but careful. Ashley opens the door, and they slip inside, seeking the privacy and relief the room provides. Back at the table, Merig's brow furrows, his eyes fixed on the bathroom door, his expression a mask of worry and concern. Orla notices his distress, her gaze gentle as she turns to him. She speaks in a soft, calming voice, her words a balm to his frazzled nerves, attempting to ease his mind and reassure him that all will be well. Her soothing tone and empathetic presence offer a sense of comfort, a steadying influence on her son's evident unease.

(O)Merig, honey, are you okay?

(M)[sigh] Yeah, I just have a feeling today is the day.

(O)She’ll be just fine, son. If it happens, it happens.

(Msr)What’s important is that we’re prepared for it.

(G)Yeah, there’s a horse and cart outside to rush her to the healer if we need to.

(B)And she’s got us to help her onto the cart. It’ll be okay, little brother.

(C)Yeah, I wouldn’t worry too much. How sure are you that she’ll go into labor today?

(M)It’s just this feeling I can’t shake off. I want to go check on her.

(L)Just wait, pal, she’ll come out.

(T)Just take deep breaths, Merig. I was the same way when it was close to Jo’s time to give birth to Kate. I tended to her every need until it was time. The day she went into labor, I had an itching feeling just like you do now.

(J)Kate is the mother, but you’re the father, you have instincts too. And one of them is knowing what your wife needs or what’s happening to her.

(Msr)She’s right, son. I had the same feeling when your mother had you and Barth. Trust your instincts, but keep a level head. You’re doing just fine, Merig. You’ve proven to be a phenomenal husband to Kate.

(B)He’s right, little brother, we know how much you love and care for her. You’re the best husband in the world in her eyes, and you’ll be just as good of a father as we’ve been telling you. Just wait for her to come out, don’t rush or make rash decisions.

(L)Ash is helping her, she’ll be okay, pal.

(M)[sigh] You're right, you know me, I worry about her.

(DD)We know that’s just how much you love her.

(J)Is the nursery ready?

(M)Yeah, Kate and I worked together to finish it and prepare the house for Nevan. Everything is perfect and ready.

(T)Good, what’s the theme?

(M)Stars, Kate is the moon, I’m the earth, and Nevan is our star.

(O)Oh that’s so precious, Merig, a shining star will be born from the moon and the earth.

(M)[smiles] Exactly, that was the initial message we wanted people to understand.

(B)It’s a beautiful message and theme, Merig. I can’t wait to meet my nephew.

(L)Same here. You’ll have a beautiful family, pal.

(EM)From what I’ve seen, you’re both good to each other. Your love is strong and even I can sense it.

(G)Yeah, it practically radiates from you both.

(C)These two belong together, there’s no denying that.

(J)...Oh, here she comes. She looks just fine to me.

Ashley and Kate emerge from the bathroom, Kate's face radiant with a warm smile, as they make their way back to the table. Ashley guides Kate with gentle care, her hand supporting Kate's elbow, as they approach. With tender attention, Ashley lowers Kate into her seat, Kate's hands cradling her swollen belly, a protective and loving gesture. Ashley then returns to her own seat, her eyes shining with warmth and concern. Kate's gaze meets Merig's, her smile softening further, as she speaks in a gentle, melodious voice, her words a soothing comfort to his earlier worry. Kate's hand reaches out, her fingers intertwining with Merig's, a loving and reassuring touch.

(K)I’m back, my love. Are you okay? You look worried.

(M)A little, like I said, I just have this feeling, but I’ve calmed down a little.

(K)It’s okay, honey, I just had to pee really bad. You know, Nevan, he likes to dance around on my bladder. It’ll be okay. Just sit here with me and relax.

(M)Of course, sweetheart, how about some lunch?

(K)That would be wonderful, I’m actually kind of hungry…[winces]

(M)Kate, what’s wrong?

(K)I don’t know, I just felt some pain.

(J)Kate, honey, talk to me.

(K)I’m fine, Mom, it’s probably just Nevan kicking.

(A)I’m not so sure, you rarely react that way when he kicks.

(B)She’s right, sis, are you still feeling the pain?

(K)No, I’m okay, let’s just get some lunch. I’m sure it’ll pass.

(DD)Okay, but if it happens again, you should probably go see Nessa.

(K)I promise it’ll be okay, no need to worry.

(M)That’s when I worry the most, sweetheart, you know that.

(K)I know, my love, I’ll be okay. Although, I do feel Nevan moving around. He’s probably active again, and that’s where the pain is coming from.

(M)If that’s all it is, then okay, but again, I have a feeling. I’ll try not to let it get to me.

(K)Okay, honey, let’s enjoy our time here.[winces] AH! There it is again!

(O)It’s just as I thought, she’s having contractions!

(J)Honey, did your water break?

(K)[grunts] I don’t think so. I just came back from the bathroom. I did have to go pretty bad. There was a lot of it, too.

(O)That’s why, her water broke, it’s time!

(M)Gordo, get the cart ready!

(G)I’m on it!

(M)Barth, help me get her outside, please.

(B)You got it, Merig.

(M)Come on, sweetheart, we’re taking you to Nessa.

(K)Okay, let’s go, I’m starting to feel more pain.[winces] AH!

(L)Clear the way, we’ve got a mother in labor!

Kate's labor pains intensify, signaling the imminent arrival of her baby. With a sense of urgency, Gordo and the others spring into action, rushing to prepare the cart and horse for a swift departure. Meanwhile, Barth and Merig gently but firmly assist Kate to her feet, their supportive arms encircling her waist, as Larry clears a path through the crowded pub, his tall frame parting the sea of patrons with a sense of purpose. Kate's steps falter, her breathing labored, but Merig and Barth's steady hands guide her forward, their collective strength propelling her toward the exit. Outside, Gordo expertly commands the horse, bringing the cart to a gentle stop before them. With careful precision, Merig and Barth help Kate ascend into the cart, their hands cradling her elbows, as they settle her in. Merig sits beside her, as the others gather around, their faces etched with concern and excitement, as they prepare for the rapid journey ahead. With a gentle yet urgent driving, Gordo commands the horse, and the cart lurches forward, its wooden wheels rattling over the cobblestones as they hasten towards the healer's sanctuary, racing against time to ensure a safe arrival. The cart thunders through the city streets, as Gordo expertly navigates the crowd. Kate's contractions intensify, her face contorting in discomfort, as Gordo shouts, clearing a path through the throngs of people. The cart careens around a corner, turning onto the street where the healer's sanctuary lies, and Gordo reins in the horse, bringing the cart to a sudden, jolting halt. In a flurry of activity, the group dismounts, Merig and Barth rushing to Kate's side to support her as she struggles to descend from the cart. Merig Senior and Cormac join the effort, their combined strength gently lowering Kate to the ground, as they hasten to open the door and usher her into the healer's warm, golden light. Nessa and Sarah, startled by the sudden arrival, turn from their tasks, concern etched on their faces, as Merig speaks up, his voice urgent and worried.

(M)Kate is in labor!

(N)Come on, I’ve already got the partition ready. I had a feeling it would be soon, so Sarah and I put it up.

(S)I’ll get everything we need. There’s a bed ready for her.

Merig and Barth gently escort Kate to the prepared bed, nestled behind the partition curtain, where Nessa and Sarah await with a warm and welcoming setup. They carefully lower Kate onto the bed, surrounded by soft linens, strategically placed for Kate's comfort. Sarah readies a bowl of warm water, gentle rags, and her carefully crafted pain-reducing potions, while Nessa thoughtfully props Kate's legs up with plush pillows, ensuring her comfort as they prepare for the impending birth. Barth respectfully withdraws to the other side of the partition, joining the anxious but supportive group, while Merig sits vigilantly in a chair beside Kate's bed, his hand clasped tightly around hers. Joanna enters, accompanied by Ashley, Deirdre, and Orla, their faces filled with concern and encouragement. Cormac, Merig Senior, Thomas, Gordo, Larry, and Emerald join Barth, patiently waiting behind the curtain. Joanna takes a seat in a chair on the opposite side of Kate's bed, her hand reaching out to clasp Kate's other hand, offering a reassuring presence. Deirdre and Orla stand watch, their supportive eyes fixed on Kate, as Ashley positions herself at Kate's legs, ready to assist with the delivery as the designated midwife. With gentle care, Ashley removes Kate's cloak, handing it to Deirdre to hold, before carefully lifting the hem of Kate's dress and slipping off her shoes and undergarments. Nessa positions herself beside Ashley, her experienced eyes assessing Kate's progress as Sarah hands her a warm, wet rag and soft towels. Kate's anguished cries fill the room, her body wracked by intense contractions, as Merig and Joanna offer words of comfort and reassurance. Sarah hands Merig a small vial of pain-reducing potion, which he opens and offers to Kate. She drinks gratefully, the liquid bringing a measure of relief to her tortured body. Merig sets the vial on the bedside table, his hand never leaving Kate's, as she squeezes it tightly between contractions. His soft, sweet voice whispers gentle encouragement, his eyes locked on Kate's, filled with love and concern. Kate's gaze meets Merig's, her eyes searching for comfort, as they share a moment of tender connection amidst the turmoil of her labor.

(M)Just look at me, sweetheart, everything will be okay.

(K)It’s happening, Merig, I'm having this baby, but it hurts so badly.

(M)That’s why Sarah gave you the potion to drink. It should help.

(N)She's dilated six centimeters! Her contractions will be more frequent soon.

(A)What do I do? I'm worried I'll mess up.

(N)You’re doing just fine, just keep dabbing her with the rag and put the towels around her where the baby will come out.

(A)I can do that. It looks like she's opening up more.

(N)Yes, she’s dilating more, so the contractions will get stronger. This baby is about to be born. Push as much as you can, Kate. You're doing great.

(A)I don't see the head yet, is that normal?

(N)Yes, we should see it soon, once she’s dilated more. The baby is moving through her birth canal. The more she dilates, the more she needs to push. We just have to encourage her.

(A)Come on, Kate, you can do it, hon! I believe in you.

(K)[sobs] Oh god it hurts![screams]

(O)I know, dear, but you’re doing great. Nevan will be here soon. Just take deep and quick breaths. It'll help.

(K)Okay, I'll try to do that, just don't let go of my hand, Merig, please.

(M)I’m not going anywhere, Kate, I'm going to be right here the whole time. I'm not letting go of your hand. Just keep looking at me and breathe.

(N)Eight centimeters! We should be seeing the head very soon. Keep pushing, Kate, it'll be over before you know it.

(J)I've got you, baby girl. You can do this. You're strong. Push, okay? Mama’s here and so is Merig. Just talk to us.

(K)[sob] I love you, Mom. I'm finally going to be a mother, just like you.[screams]

(J)That’s right, baby, just keep breathing and push. That's it.

(N)Ten centimeters! She's fully dilated!

(A)So do we just wait until we see the head?

(N)Yes, just keep the area wet and warm, and when we see the head, we need to prepare to catch him and wrap him in a blanket. There’s going to be a lot of blood. I hope you’re not too squeamish.

(A)If I am, I don't care, I’m helping my best friend give birth.

(N)That’s a loyal friend, Ash. Let’s get the baby blanket ready.

(S)Here's the baby blanket.

(A)Thank you, Sarah, you're a lifesaver…She's starting to open up more. Just keep pushing, sweetie!

(K)[sobs] I’m trying.[screams]

(N)You’re doing great. We should be seeing the head any second now.

(M)You hear that, sweetheart? Nevan is almost here.

(K)[sobs] I heard, my love, I'm so scared.

(M)Don’t be. I'm right here to take all of your fears away, remember? That's my job and it'll always be my job.

(K)[sobs] I love you so much, my earth. Thank you for everything you do for me.

(M)That's what I'm here for, my moon. Our star is almost born. Just keep pushing, sweetheart.

(A)...Wait, is that?

(N)I see it! The top of the head!

(O)I see it too, you can do this, Kate!

(DD)We believe in you, Kate, push!

(S)Is the potion working?

(K)[sobs] A little, the pain isn't so bad anymore, but I can still feel the pressure.

(N)That's okay, honey, just keep at it.

(K)[sobs] I’m still scared. What if I don't hear him crying?

(B)It'll be okay, sis. I know I'm on the other side of this curtain, but we're cheering you on.

(T)That's right pumpkin, your dad is here to help calm you.

(C)Keep pushing, Kate. Nevan is almost here. Not long now and I'll be on your side of the curtain, holding Deirdre’s hand while she gives birth to Connor.

(G)These are your heroes talking to you, Kate. We believe in you. Push so we can meet Nevan. He's almost here.

(EM)It will be a beautiful sight to see. Just focus on Merig. He'll help you. Your anxiety is high, but you'll be okay. Just keep telling yourself that.

(Msr)I hope my words of wisdom can help you, Kate, just like I told Orla when she was in labor with Barth. Give birth to your son, so Merig can shed his tears of joy when he sees Nevan.

(M)[chuckles] He's right, sweetheart. I want to cry when I meet our son. You can do this, my moon, push.

(K)[sobs] Thank you all for the support. I love you all.[screams]

(N)Here he is, get ready to catch him, Ash.

(A)I’ve got him, I'm ready, the head is coming out.

(N)One more good push, sweetheart, can you do that for me?

(K)[sob] Okay, I'll try.

With a mighty, deep breath, Kate summons her last reserves of strength, her hands clinging to Merig's and Joanna's as she prepares for one final, mighty push. Nessa and Ashley coach her through the effort, their voices a gentle encouragement. Kate's scream of exertion echoes through the room, mingling with the sudden sharp, high-pitched wail of a newborn goblin. The sound waves wash over the assembled group, their faces alight with joy and wonder. Nevan, the precious, droopy, and pointed-eared infant, has emerged, and Ashley's skilled hands cradle the infant, gently wrapping him in a soft blanket. She holds the baby aloft, presenting him to Kate and Merig, their faces radiant with joy and exhaustion. Nevan's tiny, scrunched face contorts in a mighty cry, his small lungs announcing his arrival to the world. The room erupts in a chorus of coos and congratulations, the group's collective happiness palpable as they welcome the newest addition to their family.

(A)[smiles] He's here, your son is here.

(O)Oh thank goodness, he's beautiful.

(DD)He’s so cute.

(S)He’s precious.

(J)Our grandson is here, Tom, Merig Senior.

(T)We hear him, dear, he sounds healthy.

(Msr)That he does, Tom, it brings back memories.

(B)Be strong, I can’t cry yet.

(L)[sniffles]

(B)...

(L)...What? I'm not crying, you're crying.

(B)[smirk] You couldn't help yourself, could you?

(L)[sniffles] Don’t talk shit, I can see a tear in your eye. You're trying to hold it back.

(B)[sniffles] You’re lucky we're here, or I'd kick your ass.

(G)[sigh] You two are hopeless.

(EM)I don't blame them, this is a beautiful moment.

(C)That, it is, Emerald, those two will be fine. Don't worry about them, Gordo.

(K)Look at him, he’s here, Merig, we did it.

(M)No, you did it, sweetheart.

(K)[sobs] No, we did, my love, we made a son. I couldn't have done it without you all. We have a family now.

(M)We made a son, and he's beautiful.

(N)Merig, you're the father. Would you like to cut the umbilical cord? It’s very sacred and symbolic that the husband does it.

(M)[smiles] Of course I do.

Merig rises from his seat, his eyes fixed on Ashley, who cradles Nevan on the blanket, his tiny face still scrunched up in distress. Nessa hands Merig a small pair of shears, guiding his hands to the precise spot where the umbilical cord needs to be cut. With deliberate care, Merig positions the shears, his fingers trembling slightly as he snips the cord. Nessa supports the cord with a small wooden clamp, her hands steady and reassuring. As Ashley tenderly swaddles Nevan in the blanket, Merig's arms open wide to receive his newborn son. He cradles Nevan with reverence, his eyes taking in the sight of his tiny, perfect form. Nevan's skin tone matches Merig's own, and his small, droopy goblin ears twitch with each wail. Merig's voice whispers softly, a gentle shushing sound, as he tries to soothe his crying son. A single tear escapes his eye, tracing a path down his cheek as he speaks to Nevan in a voice trembling with emotion.

(M)It’s okay, Nevan, your dad is here. Everything will be okay. He’s perfect.

(O)He is, Merig, you did an amazing job.

(DD)He looks healthy, and he’s so cute with those little ears.

(A)He’s beautiful, Merig, you and Kate did wonderful.

(N)Shed those tears, Merig. Don’t be ashamed.

(S)This is a happy time. I might even shed a tear.

(J)I think we all will. How are you feeling, Kate?

(K)Nevan is here, my son, he’s here…

(J)Sweetheart, are you okay?

(K)Thank you, my love, for everything.

(M)Honey, what’s wrong?

(K)...

In an instant, Kate's eyes flutter closed, her head sinking into the pillow as she succumbs to unconsciousness. The room falls silent, all attention snapping to Kate's limp form, worry etched on every face. Merig's eyes widen in alarm as he hastily, yet gently, hands Nevan to Nessa, before rushing to Kate's side. He gathers her in his arms, his hands cradling her head, as he whispers her name, his voice trembling with concern. His fingers graze her cheeks, softly caressing her skin, willing her to respond, to awaken from her sudden slumber. The others watch, frozen in anxiety, as Merig's face reflects his deepening fear, his heart racing with every passing moment.

(M)Kate sweetheart, talk to me, look at me. Can you hear me? Nessa, what's going on with her?

(N)I don't know. Sarah, we have to examine her. Is she breathing?

(M)...No, she's not. Kate!

(J)Kate honey!

(A)Is she dead?!

(O)Oh my goodness, I hope not.

(DD)Kate, no, you can't leave us.

The group on the other side of the curtain hears the sudden commotion and exchanges worried glances, their eyes wide with alarm. They rush to the other side, their faces etched with concern, and gather around the bed. Kate lies motionless, her body still, sending a wave of panic through the onlookers. Merig gently lays her back down, his face ashen, and steps aside to let Sarah examine her. Nessa hands Nevan to Ashley and hurries to Kate's other side, her hands shaking slightly as she joins Sarah in their efforts to revive Kate. Joanna quietly moves out of the way, making space for Nessa and Sarah to work. The two women concentrate on resuscitating Kate, their faces set in determined lines. The group watches in hushed silence, their eyes brimming with tears as they fear the worst. The air is heavy with tension, the only sound is the soft murmurs of Nessa and Sarah as they work to save Kate. Time seems to slow as they wait for a miracle, their hearts suspended in a state of anguish.

(T)Pumpkin, no.

(B)Sis, come on, wake up.

(C)She can't be.

(G)No, absolutely not.

(EM)She'll be okay, right?

(L)I sure hope so, we can’t lose her.

(Msr)This isn't good at all.

(A)Come on, Kate, come back to us, don’t die on me.

(DD)Nevan needs you, don’t leave us.

(M)Come on, sweetheart, open your eyes, please, I’m begging you.

(O)What do we do now?

(J)All we can do is wait. Nessa and Sarah are trying everything they can to save her.

(S)Nothing is working, Nessa. I don’t know what else to do.

(N)We have to keep trying, go get some potions and medicine.

(S)Okay, I’m not giving up.

Sarah dashes to the medicine cupboard, her hands shaking as she gathers an array of medicines and potions. She hurries back to Kate's bedside, her face set in a determined expression, as she and Nessa begin administering the concoctions with precision and care. The room remains silent, the only sound the soft clinking of glass vials and the gentle racket of Nevan's cries, as the group holds its breath. The two women work in tandem, their faces etched with concern, as they desperately try to revive Kate. Ashley gently rises to her feet, cradling Nevan close, his tiny form swaddled snugly in his blanket, as she gives Nessa and Sarah space to work. Joanna approaches, her eyes brimming with tears, and helps Ashley to console Nevan, softly shushing him alongside Ashley, their voices a gentle melody of comfort.
