As the cool autumn breeze whispers through the city of Tara on a November afternoon, the leaves transform into a kaleidoscope of golden hues, casting a warm ambiance over the streets. Merig and the other guards have completed their guard duties and are now indulging in warm camaraderie and frothy ale at the Bright and Sherry pub. Meanwhile, In the serene home of Kate and Merig, the silence is only broken by Kate's gentle slumber, her body cocooned in a soft blanket for warmth. Suddenly, she stirs, her eyes slowly unfurling, like the petals of a flower greeting the sun. She rises from her slumber, her movements graceful and deliberate, and sits up on the edge of the bed, her feet touching the ground with a soft thud. With a gentle toss, she casts aside the blanket, revealing her beautifully rounded, pregnant belly, a testament to the new life growing within her. Kate takes a deep breath, feeling the gentle stirrings of her baby, and pushes herself up from the bed, her hands cradling her belly. She stands, stretching her arms overhead, and smiles, her face radiating with joy and anticipation. After a refreshing visit to the bathroom, Kate dresses in a comfortable, flowing dress and wraps herself in a thick, woolen cloak, the scent of wool and wood smoke enveloping her like a warm hug. She leaves the peacefulness of her home behind, her sights set on joining the group at the pub, where the fire crackles and the atmosphere is alive with laughter and conversation. The group sits at their usual table, relaxed and content, their faces aglow with the warmth of friendship and the satisfaction of a meal well-enjoyed.
(B)I notice Kate hasn’t been coming here until later in the afternoon.
(M)She’s just been really tired, it’s been hard for her even doing daily things, so I don’t mind helping her while she gets some rest.
(A)I knew you were going to be the perfect husband. You’ve been taking extra days off as well and that’s good, too.
(M)Yeah, I kind of feel bad for it, putting Larry and Barth in charge while I’m gone.
(L)Hey, it’s no big deal, pal. Barth and I have everything under control when you’re not with us on those days.
(B)Yeah, it’s no skin off our backs. It’s what I’m trained for. Besides, when you’re not out there with us, Gordo likes to tag along as well, so that gives us an extra set of eyes and ears.
(G)Yeah, I’m sure Kate isn’t having the best time, being pregnant and all.
(M)She’s loving it, yeah she might have some difficulty moving around, but she loves to just sit on the bed or in the chair at the dining table and rub her belly while she smiles to herself. She’ll even sing and hum when she does, and it’s lovely to see.
(C)I’m sure she’s happy about being pregnant. She always has a smile on her face when someone asks her how far along she is or congratulates her.
(A)It’s so cute to watch her talk or sing to her belly, especially when she feels him moving around.
(M)[chuckles] Yeah, she does that quite often too at home. She always wants me to feel her belly when he’s very active.
(L)She’s happy and proud to be having your child, Merig, and I’m sure you’re thrilled to be a dad.
(M)I couldn’t be happier, buddy, it brings me joy, and seeing her happy makes me happy. It’s a wonder how I got so lucky.
(L)Best not to question it, pal, remember? I stopped questioning it a long time ago.
(A)It’s crazy, it’s been over a year since you and Kate got together. And about the same time Larry and I got together.
(M)It is crazy, and Kate loved the fact that she was pregnant on her birthday. She said the baby was active the most on that day.
(B)Well yeah, when she’s happy, the baby is happy. They feel each other’s emotions on a more spiritual and physical level. It’s a beautiful thing when a mother and a child have that kind of bond.
(M)I hope I can have the same bond with him. He’ll be my son after all.
(C)Well, you’ve already created a bond with him. Do you not do the same things she does? Do you talk to her belly and rub it?
(M)Well yeah, I do all the time.
(C)Then you’ve already formed a bond with him. I hear that babies inside the womb can hear things from outside of the womb.
(B)Yeah, I heard that too. It helps stimulate them, especially with the mother’s voice or when she’s singing and even music when music is playing.
(A)That’s right, it is a beautiful thing. I’m sure the baby moves when Merig talks to Kate’s belly.
(M)He does, and he moves a lot when Kate and I are talking together. Kate gets very excited when it happens. We even heard his heartbeat together, so it’s as if all three of us are connected.
(G)That’s amazing. You’re truly going to be a happy family.
(M)Well, Kate and I are happy together and we’re both happy she’s pregnant. Yeah, I’d say you’re right, Gordo.
(C)And even after everything happened, she’s still happy. She’s a very strong person and she’ll be an amazing mother.
(M)Kate seems to think she wasn’t strong after what happened at the hideout last year since she went through the aftermath.
(B)Well, she’s wrong, she got through it and she’s much better and happier now.
(M)That’s what I keep telling her, but she insists that she wasn’t at her strongest when she was going through it.
(L)Well, of course not. Everyone has a breaking point and some recover faster than others. Kate is no less of a strong person just because she couldn’t bear all of that weight from everything that happened. But she recovered well, and that made her stronger. Of course, she had help, but she’s the one that broke through it.
(M)I told her all of that as well and she understands, but she never wants to get that way ever again and she doesn’t even have to try this time. She’s been doing so well since she’s been pregnant and it’s made her so happy that it seems like she’s forgotten about everything that happened with Sean.
(A)It’s because of you, Merig.
(M)What do you mean?
(A)Think about it. You are all she talked about after she met you and you were the one she fell in love with. You made her so happy. Despite everything that happened last year, you were still the one to make her happy and help her get through her trauma. You asked her to marry you and you have no idea how happy she was about that. Then you got married, and she was over the moon about being your wife. Now she’s pregnant with your child and she’s astronomically more happy. Life is perfect for her, despite all the bad things that have happened. It’s all because of you, Merig. You make that woman happy and there’s no denying it.
(B)I’m going to have to agree, you are her happiness, Merig.
(M)She’s told me that and she’s my happiness as well. Even after what happened to me, she still wasn’t afraid of that side of me and wanted to see it.
(A)Because she loves you that much, Merig, she knows you didn’t hurt her intentionally. You were being controlled. You literally couldn’t control your actions. It would be a different story if you had that control.
(L)Exactly, she has so much love for you, that she was more worried about you getting hurt than herself getting hurt. Sound familiar?
(M)Yeah, I understand, I just wish it never happened.
(C)I think we all wish that, but it did and Kate seems to have put it behind her and we’ve all resumed our daily lives, including you two. We’ve all recovered from our wounds, inside and out, and we’re all happy again. Sean is in prison for what he did and Kate’s baby is healthy and growing inside of her belly and that’s all she cares about besides you.
(M)You’re right, Sean can’t hurt her anymore and that’s all I care about. She’s my wife and the mother of my child, and that’s all I care about.
(B)We know little brother, and I’m happy about being an uncle to that child.
(G)We know you are, Barth. We’re all happy to be a part of his life. It really feels good that we’re all together again and living a good and happy life.
(C)Same here and I’ve finally conquered what I was going through. I made a life here, met Deirdre and we’re both happy together. Life is perfect for me, too.
(B)Sarah and I are happy as well. Although, we haven’t moved in together yet and we haven’t made love yet. But that’s okay. I’m still happy with her and she’s happy, too.
(A)It’s okay, Barth, you know it took me a while for me to want to move in with Larry. Also, Sarah has always been a very shy person, so don’t fault her for not wanting to be intimate.
(B)Oh no, of course not, I’m not upset with her at all. Do I want to make love to her? Of course, but whenever she’s ready, I won’t pressure her. But I’m still happy to be with her and she’s happy, too.
(A)Oh, you can tell she’s happy. She’s so giddy when she comes in and sees you. It’s so cute to watch her skip her way over here to you with that big smile on her face. You practically melt when she greets you with a kiss and so does she.
(B)[blush] Yeah, my brain just does something weird when she does. It almost feels like I’m floating.
(M)That’s love, big brother, that’s the feeling you get when you realize how lucky you are to be with such a wonderful woman.
(B)I couldn’t agree more, little brother.
(C)I feel the same way when Deirdre and I interact. It makes you forget about the bad things in life.
(L)That’s right, for even just a moment of solace, it’s well worth it. We’re the luckiest goblins in Tara.
(M)That we are, buddy, and I’ll be the luckiest husband and father.
(L)No doubt about that.
The group's lively chatter fills the pub until Kate makes a radiant entrance, her beaming smile illuminating the room. Her eyes sparkle as she scans the pub, taking in the familiar faces of her loved ones, all engaged in animated conversation. With a tender hand cradling her swollen belly, she waddles towards the table, her pace a bit more steady due to her advanced pregnancy. As she approaches, the group's attention shifts, and warm smiles welcome her. Merig, ever devoted to her, is the first to rise, his eyes locked adoringly on Kate as he hurries to meet her, offering a supportive arm to guide her to her seat.
(A)Oh my god, you’re so pregnant!
(K)[giggles] You say that every time you see me, Ash.
(A)I can’t help it, I’m sorry, it’s just so beautiful to see.
(M)How are you feeling, sweetheart?
(K)I just woke up a bit ago, I realized I slept in. I’m sorry, my love.
(M)Don’t even think about being sorry, honey, you need the extra rest and I completely understand.
(K)I’ve just been so tired in this third trimester, it’s taking a lot more energy out of me than normal.
(B)Hey, you’re resting for the both of you, so it’s no issue, sis. Are you hungry?
(K)I ate something before I came here, but I’m sure the baby will be hungry again soon.
(L)You’re eating for two, remember?
(K)[giggles] Pretty much, I’ll eat something and be hungry again soon after.
(A)That baby is hungry, and he’s growing because you’re eating.
(K)That’s right, and it’s all worth it.
(C)Just looking at your belly, there is a tiny goblin in there, isn’t there?
(K)That’s right, Cormac, and he’s been pretty active lately, more than he usually is.
(B)How often does he kick?
(K)Oh, he’s kicking right now. Do you want to feel, Uncle Barth?
(B)Can I?
(K)Of course, just gotta waddle my ass over to you.[giggles]
(M)Here, honey, I’ll help you.
Merig lovingly wraps his arm around Kate, offering steady support as she wraps her own arm around him, and together they make their way to the opposite side of the table, where Barth is seated. As they approach, Kate positions herself in front of Barth, her rounded belly facing him. Barth's face lights up with a warm smile as he turns to face her. He extends his hands, and Kate gently takes them, guiding one to the upper right side of her belly and the other to the center. The moment is filled with anticipation, as if they're all waiting for something special to happen. Barth's hands rest gently on Kate's belly, as if trying to connect with the new life growing within.
(K)These are the spots where he usually kicks, so you’ll feel it. He’s not shy about it, either. I have a feeling he’ll be like this until he’s born.
(B)Your belly is so big, Ash is right, it’s beautiful to see up close…[gasp] I felt something.
(K)Yep, he’s kicking, it’s because you’re talking. He’s very active when you talk to him.
(B)[smiles] Hey, buddy, it’s your Uncle Barth. I hear you’re dancing around in there and it’s making your mom very tired. Keep it up. It means you’re healthy and I can’t wait to meet you. Your Uncle Barth is going to spend time with you and we’re going to have a lot of fun…[gasp] He moved again. You were right, it’s as if he can hear me.
(C)Can I feel it?
(K)Of course, Cormac, I’ll make my way over there.
Barth releases his gentle grasp on Kate's belly, and Merig tenderly wraps his arm around her once more, escorting her to the other end of the table where Cormac is seated. As they approach, Cormac turns in his seat, his face lighting up with excitement, and extends his hands in anticipation. Kate stands before him, her belly prominent, and Cormac's hands gently come to rest upon it. His eyes widen with wonder as he gazes at Kate's swollen abdomen, his face filled with a mix of awe and curiosity. With his hands still cradling her belly, Cormac looks up at Kate and begins to speak, his voice filled with emotion and anticipation.
(C)So I just say something?
(K)Yeah, just say “hi”.
(C)Hey in there, I hear you’re active, which means you’ll be quite the handful when you’re out here.
(K)[giggle] And I’m sure everyone here, including myself, will keep him occupied.
(C)Just makes me think that I almost ruined this future for you and Merig.
(K)Hey, we talked about this, just embrace the present. Don’t think about what could’ve happened, cause all that matters is what’s happening now.
(C)You’re right, maybe someday Deirdre and I can have a family together.
(K)There you go and you both can get married and be happy.
(C)[smiles] Merig is right, we are lucky goblins. I’m going to hug Deirdre tight when I see her and tell her that I love her. I’ll hold her all night since I moved in with her recently.
(K)I’m sure you’re both happy. I know Deirdre is over the moon about being with you. Expect her to be talking about marriage and children.
(C)We’ve already had that conversation and we’re planning things. I want to ask her to marry me, but I’m waiting for the right time…[gasp] Oh, I felt a kick.
(K)[smiles] I’ve learned that there’s no such thing as “the right time.”
(B)Hell, I confessed my love for Sarah in a dungeon. Most people wouldn’t think that would be an appropriate time or place to do that, but you know what? I live dangerously.
(K)[giggles] And Sarah is over the moon for you as well, Barth. You’re all she talks about when you’re not here.
(L)And she’s all he talks about as well and he just won’t shut up about her. Even when we’re out doing our daily patrol.[smirk]
(B)Hush you, I worked hard to win her heart so don’t talk shit.
(L)That’s payback for talking shit about my flirting with Ash. Deal with it, pal.
(B)I’ll deal with you if you don’t shut up.
(A)Knock it off, or I’ll knock your heads together.
(C)Oh, he’s active now, I can feel him moving.
(K)That’s because he hears his Uncle Barth and Uncle Larry bickering. Is this the example we want to set for your future nephew?
(B)Yeah, Larry, you should be ashamed of yourself. I’m appalled.
(L)Don’t make me come over there.
(K)Both of you should be ashamed of yourself.
(B)He started it.
(K)And I’ll finish it since my child is moving around pretty excessively right about now. He’s also tap dancing on my bladder, so both of you hush.
(A)Oh, that can’t be fun.
(K)I don’t mind, it’s worth the multiple bathroom trips. I’m just glad he’s active. It lets me know that he’s healthy.
(M)Why don’t you come over and sit, sweetheart?
(K)You’re right, my love, just standing this long puts weight on my poor feet.
(C)Here, I’ll help you.
Cormac tenderly removes his hands from Kate's belly, then rises from his seat, offering his arm to support her. Kate grasps his arm, and Cormac guides her towards the empty chair beside Merig. However, their gentle progress is suddenly disrupted when a careless passerby bumps into Kate, sending her stumbling forward. Cormac swiftly reacts, wrapping his arms around her to prevent a fall, holding her steady. Merig's face darkens with anger as he shoots his gaze at the offender with a fierce glare, his eyes blazing with protectiveness. He strides towards the man, his voice rising in indignation, his tone firm and commanding.
(M)Hey, watch where you’re walking! Did you not see my pregnant wife in your path, or did you just not care?!
(DB)Maybe your wife should’ve gotten out of the way.
(M)There was plenty of room and you could’ve gone around her. Besides, she’s pregnant. She’s not exactly fast on her feet because of her large belly weighing on them! You could’ve hurt her and made her fall! Do you have no respect?!
(DB)Not my problem, I didn’t knock her up.
(M)I don’t give a shit. It would’ve been your problem had she fallen and gotten hurt! Either apologize or get the hell out of this pub!
(DB)I don’t have to apologize for shit. Tell your wife to move faster.
(M)She’s pregnant, you asshole! What part of that don’t you understand?!
(K)[wince] Merig, honey, please lower your voice. Your son is moving around in my belly because of it and it’s not comfortable.
(M)You could’ve fallen, honey, this asshole needs to watch where he’s going and I have a feeling that it wasn’t an accident.
(K)Even if it wasn’t, this is not how to handle it. I understand you’re upset about it, but it’s not worth getting aggressive over. I’m fine. Cormac caught me before I could fall.
(M)But what if he wasn’t there to catch you, sweetheart? It would’ve been worth kicking this guy’s ass over.
(K)[sigh] I understand, honey, how do you think I feel? I’m the one that’s pregnant, so just please calm down. If you feel that angry about it, take him outside and shout at him there, but not here, where you’ll draw attention. Do you really want this entire pub to see how short of a temper the commander of the Royal Guards has? I’m sure a lot of people would agree that he should’ve watched where he was going in the path of a pregnant woman, but there’s a better way to handle it.
(M)[sigh] I’m sorry, but you have to think of it from my perspective. I’m the husband and the father of our child growing inside your delicate belly, and it’s my job to protect you from assholes like this. What he did was not okay, and he needs to understand that, if you had gotten hurt, it would be a completely different story.
(K)I understand, my love, but remember what I said about what could’ve been? Just be glad that Cormac was here to stop me from falling and that I’m okay. Like I said, if you want to deal with this man, do it outside, not here disrupting this peaceful pub. I’m sure Sherry wouldn’t very much appreciate it and neither does our baby, since he moves around a lot when someone is yelling and it’s quite painful, just like it would’ve been if I had fallen.
(M)You’re right, honey, I should be more mindful and I’m sorry. Apologize to my wife or face the consequences, your choice. As the commander of the Royal Guards and someone who protects you in this city, I recommend choosing your next words wisely.
(DB)I’m sorry your wife didn’t move out of the way fast enough.
(M)[glare] Alright, asshole, I guess we’re taking this outside. And don’t even think about fighting back, because I will throw you in a cell.
Merig firmly grasps the careless stranger, his grip unyielding, and propels him towards the bar, where Sherry is busy serving drinks. Cormac, meanwhile, gently assists Kate into the seat beside Merig's, his concern for her well-being evident. Kate settles in, taking slow, deep breaths, and tenderly rubs her pregnant belly, trying to soothe her active baby inside. As she sits, she closes her eyes, focusing on calming her little one. At the bar, Merig's anger is still palpable as he approaches Sherry, his voice low and serious. Sherry, sensing the tension, immediately stops what she's doing, her attention fixed on Merig and the man he's holding. Her expression turns stern, ready to address the situation.
(M)Sorry to bother you, Sherry, but this asshole decided it would be nice to bump into Kate, who you know is very pregnant, and she would’ve fallen had Cormac not caught her. He refuses to apologize and I’m not convinced that it was an accident.
(SH)Kate is your wife, do what you feel is right. As for you, you aren’t welcome here if you’re going to be treating my other patrons and friends with such disrespect. That woman over there is pregnant, and you need to be mindful of your surroundings. She could’ve gotten hurt and it would’ve been on your hands. I’ve seen you around the pub and I don’t particularly like you, so I’m going to let Commander Flynn here deal with you. Get him out of here, Commander.
(M)Yes ma’am, with the utmost pleasure. Let’s go, shithead, maybe this will teach you how to treat pregnant women.
(DB)I don’t respect Fomors or that woman who is carrying one in her womb. This world doesn’t need more of you.
(M)Well, you can eat shit and get over it, and you’ve just confirmed that you deliberately bumped into my pregnant wife. It also gives me more of a reason to throw you out of here. Sorry about the shouting, Sherry. I wasn’t going to let this jackass get away with what he did.
(SH)Don’t be sorry, Merig, I would’ve done the same if it was me. If you come back here, the Commander has every right to do whatever is necessary, so I’d keep away from this place if I were you.
(DB)This place is a shithole, anyway. You shouldn’t even be serving Fomors.
(SH)This is my pub and I'll serve who I please, especially since the commander and his Royal Guards protect the city. Show some respect.
(M)Alright, I’m done with him, he's just pissing me off more. Let’s go, asshole.
Merig's grip remains firm as he compels the man to exit the pub, his intention clear. The two step out into the chilly afternoon autumn air, Merig dragging the man to the adjacent alley. With a sudden burst of strength, Merig shoves the man against the wall, his eyes blazing crimson. His voice thunders as he unleashes a fierce tirade, his words echoing off the alleyway walls. Meanwhile, back inside the pub, Cormac returns to his seat as the others continue their hushed conversations. Kate, still rubbing her belly, looks up at Cormac, her eyes filled with a mix of worry and gratitude. Their attention is divided between the drama that just unfolded and the ominous atmosphere that lingers.
(K)I’m so sorry about that, that’s not the first time this has happened. He did the same thing to another man who actually did accidentally bump into me. He’s been very overprotective in public and every time he shouts, the baby moves and it’s not a comfortable feeling.
(B)Don’t worry, sis, you don’t have to apologize.
(A)He’s just being protective and I can understand why. Not too long ago, you got the shit beat out of you while you were just in the early stages of pregnancy. And just think about all the other things that happened before that. Should he have reacted the way he did? No, but he’s right, you have to see it from his perspective as a husband and now a soon-to-be father. He wants to keep you from getting hurt, that’s all.
(K)I get it, truly I do. He was this protective after everything that happened with Sean. I didn’t mind it, but sometimes it got out of hand. Merig isn’t the aggressive type. You all know this. He’s only been this way since I told him everything.
(L)I agree it was overzealous and I’ve told him that, but it’s just how he is with you, you know that.
(G)But it is causing the baby to move and ultimately hurt you in the process, so maybe he does need to tone it down.
(C)I have to agree, Kate reacted differently when I stopped her from falling. She didn’t seem to be in pain as much as she was when Merig was shouting. So, in reality, it caused her more pain for him to shout than it did when that man bumped into her.
(B)Yeah, but you could tell that man had intentions of hurting Kate. It was just by some divine intervention that you were there to catch her, Cormac. Had you not been there…well let’s not think about that scenario. Are you okay, sis?
(K)I’m fine now, the baby calmed down, so he isn’t moving as much. I understand all your points of view and Cormac is right. It hurt more when Merig shouted, causing the baby to move a lot. I will have a talk with him about that, but I also understand him being aggressive since that man ran into me on purpose. I’m sure you heard the vile things he said over here and before Merig and he left.
(L)Yeah, he’s just another person who hates Fomors. Good riddance. We all know Sherry doesn’t take kindly to people like that in her pub.
(K)Sadly, he’s not the only one to say things like that to me, especially when they see me with Merig in public. I’ve had people shame me for wanting to have this child and marrying my husband. It’s not frequent, but when it happens, it stresses me out, and Merig senses that. He looks so ashamed when he hears people say those nasty things, and I have to assure him that what they say doesn’t matter to me and that I still love him and I still want to have this baby.
(A)We know you do, hon, and I know you don’t let any of those things affect you.
(K)But it affects Merig and if it bothers him, it bothers me, too, and it stresses me out.
(A)Stressing out isn’t good for the baby, remember?
(K)I know and I try very hard, and for the most part, I’m so happy about being pregnant. But there are times when I’m stressed and I can’t escape from it.
(A)I get it, just try your best to stay calm. You handled yourself well when that man bumped into you.
(K)I had to, otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to calm Merig down and I didn’t want to hurt the baby.
(A)You’re going to be a wonderful mother, Kate. So how does it feel? Just over a year ago, you and that goblin out there confessed your love for each other after an entire year of fawning over him. Then all that crazy stuff happens, and he proposes to you, and then you two plan your wedding and get married. Then more crazy stuff happened, and you found out you were eight weeks pregnant. Now, six months later, here you are with this enormous belly carrying Merig’s offspring.
(K)[giggles] It’s all happened so fast, hasn’t it? Even so, despite the bad and the stress, it’s all been worth it. It feels wonderful to be with the goblin I love and to have this tiny goblin growing inside my womb and giving me hell but in a good way. Life is perfect for me and I can’t wait to be a mother. Of course, I was a mother before, but this one will be a success and he’s healthy and strong, as he’s proven in these last few months.
(B)Oh, I don’t doubt he’ll be just as active when he’s born. But we’re glad you’re happy. Pregnancy and motherhood are beautiful things for a woman.

(L)We see how happy you are when you talk to your belly and you feel him moving around in there. It just means he hears the voice of his wonderful mother.
(K)Merig talks to him, too, he’s just as active, then. It’s just hard to believe everything has happened so fast and yet it seems like no time has passed at all at the same time.
(G)You’re enjoying living your life and the small things that happen. It seems like time flies, but you’ve just been living through it and are very happy, so time slows down so you can enjoy it. It’s good to see you happy about being pregnant.
(K)Yeah, but, it’s also made me worry about certain things.
(B)Like what, sis?
(K)...I’ve gained some weight, and it’s made me a little self-conscious.
(A)Hey hey, we can’t have that. You’re not fat, Kate, you’re pregnant.
(K)I can’t help it, I had someone I thought loved me tell me I was fat and put me down all the time. It very much affected my self-esteem and it’s gotten better, but when I look at my body now, I realize I’ve gained some weight.
(L)Isn’t that normal when a woman is pregnant?
(K)Yeah, but, I’m just worried about what Merig thinks.
(A)And you know damn well that goblin thinks you are the most beautiful woman that has ever walked this earth. I can guarantee you that he does not think you’re fat in any way, shape, or form, Kate.
(B)She’s right, sis, you aren’t the only one who talks about your being pregnant and how much you love it. Merig talks about you as well and he says he thinks you’re beautiful with your belly growing.
(K)Did he really say that?
(B)I’ve got four other witnesses and even Deirdre and Sarah have heard it.
(G)It’s true, he gushes over you how happy you are, and how proud he is to be a father.
(L)That’s right, Merig couldn’t be happier, Kate. And as always, he’s never once put you down or even mentioned your weight. Other than how big your belly has gotten because, well, there’s a little goblin baby in there, but he loves it as much as you do.
(C)But you know, you don’t have to take our word for it. Although, we wouldn’t lie to you.
(A)Never, and you know good and well how Merig feels about you. Forgive his actions, for he knows not what he does. Being a husband and a father has its burdens too, and one of them is protecting you and making sure you don’t get hurt. If you get hurt, so does that baby, and no one here wants that.
(B)Absolutely not. I’m glad he’s the kind of person to stand up to an asshole like that guy that bumped into you.
(K)I know, and I appreciate him so much, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t want him to be known as the aggressive type when he’s not. He’s just being his normal protective self.
(L)He usually knows how to control his temper and luckily this time he didn’t show that guy his red eyes in here. But knowing Merig, he’s showing them to that asshole out there and probably roughing him up a bit.
(G)Probably, but that would’ve been much scarier seeing him do that here in the pub. That guy is probably pissing himself right about now. But to be honest, it’ll teach that asshole not to purposely bump into a pregnant woman, just because she’s carrying a Fomor child.
(C)Yeah, as much as I resented humans, I never thought about harming a pregnant woman or the child inside her belly.
(A)Merig loves you, Kate, and he means well, that’s all we’re saying. Don’t mess with Papa Bear or his Mama Bear.
(K)[smiles] Alright I get it, I won’t fault him for doing his job. I’m not unhappy with him and where I am, and I’m doing great, a lot better than I thought. Aside from him being protective, we’re happy and I can’t help but smile every time I think about it.
(A)Good, that’s all we want for you both and we’ll be here to help however we can. We wouldn’t want anything bad happening between you two. We’d all be devastated if you left him and he’d be the most devastated.
(K)Trust me, it hasn’t gotten to that point and it never will. We’re more understanding of each other, but we still have disagreements. We handle those disagreements maturely so we don’t get upset with each other.
(B)Good, that’s how it should be. You two are truly perfect for each other.
(K)I wouldn’t say we’re perfect, no one’s perfect. But my life with him is perfect and we have a healthy relationship. I will say that much is true.
A few moments later, Merig reenters the pub, his expression calm and composed once more, and makes his way back to the table. Deirdre follows closely behind, a warm smile on her face as she joins the group. Merig takes his seat beside Kate, his hand gently cradling her pregnant belly as they exchange loving smiles, and Merig leans in while the two share a tender kiss. Deirdre reaches the table, her eyes locking with Cormac's as they share a sweet smile and a gentle kiss. She takes her seat beside him, the atmosphere at the table now filled with warmth and love.
(DD)Good afternoon, everyone.
(K)Hey Deirdre, good to see you, love.
(DD)It’s hard to believe your belly has gotten this big. That baby must be growing big and strong in there.
(K)Oh, there’s no doubt about that, he’s definitely big and very active.
(DD)I felt him kick the other day, and it made me so happy. I’m so glad you and the baby are doing well.
(K)Me too. Nessa is very happy every time I go to see her. She loves feeling him kick and move around in here.
(DD)It’s amazing to witness and feel it for yourself.
(B)I felt him move, too.
(C)So did I and it was fascinating. It’s as if he heard us talking to him.
(DD)That’s right, he can. It’s proven.
(L)So did you take care of that asshole, Merig?
(M)Yeah, I only roughed him up a little, and I told him if he ever came back, I’d do worse.
(DD)What happened?
(M)Some asshole bumped into Kate and she nearly fell forward. Luckily, Cormac was there to catch her before she did.
(DD)[gasp] Oh my goodness, are you okay, Kate?
(K)I’m fine, don't worry yourself.
(M)I also want to apologize, my moon. I should’ve kept a level head when it happened. My protective instincts just kicked in and I got a little more aggressive than I should’ve been. My shouting was causing you harm, and I’m sorry, sweetheart.
(K)Hey, I understand your anger toward him and when he made the comments that he did. It pissed me off as well. But I knew if I yelled at him, it would’ve put more stress on me, so you became my voice and did it for me, my love.
(M)But it caused you pain, and I didn’t mean for it to happen.
(K)Not so much pain as it was just uncomfortable. Your son probably wanted to join in on the shouting and knew what happened to me. It probably upset him as well, seeing as it most likely rattled him in my belly.
(M)And that’s something I didn’t want to happen. I’ll be honest, when you told me you lost your first child, I promised to do whatever it took to protect you, so it didn't happen again when you told me that you were pregnant.
(K)[smiles] And that’s why I love you so much. You’re so wonderful and I very much appreciate it, honey. I know I was a little upset about you shouting and I’m sorry. I know you were just upset when that man did that.
(M)It was yet another person who didn’t care for Fomors.
(K)Hey, don’t let it get to you. There’s going to be people like that and we don’t need to pay them any mind.
(DD)That’s right, people are going to judge you for reproducing with a Fomor, but it’s none of their business. You’re both happy and that’s all that matters.
(K)You’re absolutely right, Deirdre, I love this goblin and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. I stopped Sean from ruining my perfect life here and saved my husband, and no one will ever do that again, not if I have anything to do about it. If Rachel couldn’t do it, neither could Sean.
(A)Oh we know, you went scorched earth for your goblin.
(K)That’s right, and I’d do it again. I don’t care if I’m pregnant.
(M)I wouldn’t want you to do that, sweetheart.
(K)Not up for discussion, my love.
(M)[sigh] You know I love you.
(K)[smiles] I love you, too.
(B)Well, I think I’m going to go see Sarah and tell her I love her.
(K)You go do that, I’m sure she’ll be ecstatic. She works hard, and seeing you will make her day worth the stress.
(B)I know she’ll be hungry so I’ll see if Sherry will make her usual.
(L)Alright, pal, go give your woman some love.
(B)I will, I’m going to ask her about possibly moving in together. It’s been six months, so I at least want to try to propose the idea.
(L)Good luck with that, you’ll need it.
(B)Yeah yeah, I’ll do my best to charm her.
(A)You already have, so don’t worry, Barth, you got this.
(B)[sigh] I hope so, I’ll see you all later.
(K)See you later, Barth.
The group bids farewell to Barth, their voices filled with warmth and camaraderie. Barth rises from his seat, his eyes scanning the pub before settling on Sherry, who's busy polishing a mug behind the bar. Barth ambles over to her, requesting her to prepare a nourishing lunch for him to take to Sarah. Meanwhile, at the healer's workshop, Sarah and Nessa sit together at their stations, taking a well-deserved break from their afternoon endeavors. They're engaged in a gentle conversation, their voices hushed as they rest and recharge.
(N)Hey, do you want to go and get some lunch with me?
(S)Actually, I’ll stay here and wait for Barth. He usually brings me something from the pub. He surprises me with it and there have been times when I didn’t expect it and I had already eaten when he brought me lunch. I felt so bad for it and he said it was fine, but I could tell he was disappointed.
(N)Oh, that’s right, he’s so sweet for doing that.
(S)I keep telling him that he doesn’t have to, but he insists.
(N)He knows you work hard, hon, he’s just being helpful.
(S)Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m very grateful that he does that, he just goes out of his way when he doesn’t have to.
(N)Sarah, that goblin loves you very much, that’s why he does it.
(S)[blush] I know he does and I love him, too. He’s so sweet and caring. I’m just not used to this kind of thing.
(N)Well, this is your first relationship, right?
(S)Pretty much, so I don’t know what it’s like, and with him doing nice things for me, I honestly don’t know what to do for him in return. He did nice things for me before we got together and all I could do was thank him, but I always felt like I needed to do more to show my gratitude.
(N)Sometimes just a smile is all that person needs to know that they made you happy. I notice that with Barth. He loves seeing you happy and I think that’s all he wants out of it. He gets joy out of seeing you smile and making you happy, and that’s enough for him.
(S)But I want to do more for him in return, we go out on dates and I help pay the tab even though he insists. I do it because I don’t want to feel like he’s doing everything for me.
(N)I applaud you for doing that. Some women will take advantage of someone doing nice things for them, and you’re the opposite of that. But if he wants to do nice things for you, let him. He loves you and he’s doing it to make you happy. You do things to make him happy as well, and I can tell.
(S)I don’t know, I just think I could be doing more for him. We haven’t even talked about living together yet.
(N)Maybe he’s too shy to ask or talk about it.
(S)He’s mentioned it, but I’m kind of shy, too, since this is my first relationship. And the fact that I’m still a virgin and I know couples who live together make love. I’m so nervous about that, but I know he probably wants to make love to me.
(N)But he’s not pressuring you, is he?
(S)No, of course not, we’ve talked about it but he’s never really talked me into it or tried forcing it on me.
(N)He’s a true gentleman, he loves you that much not to pressure you into doing things you might not be comfortable with.
(S)Honestly, I’m pretty comfortable talking about those things…I would just be scared and I wouldn’t know how to go about it, since it would be new to me.
(N)Are you insecure about it?
(S)A little. I would be worried that Barth would make fun of me.
(N)Oh honey, I don’t see him doing anything like that. He loves you too much.
(S)I know, it’s just the fear, that’s all.
(N)I’m sure if you talked to him about it, he would understand.
(S)You’re right, I feel so bad thinking that he would judge me. He’s never judged me since I met him. He was so kind to me when we first met and he still is and I fell in love with him. I just never in a million years thought that I would end up in a relationship, especially with someone who isn’t human.
(N)You know, Kate said the same thing, and she said that she was open to the idea of it when she met Merig. She said it wasn’t outside of the realm of possibilities and she was completely okay with the fact that she and Merig fell in love, even though Merig wasn’t human in appearance. But he and Barth do have human blood since their mother was human.
(S)I remember hearing the story. It was so sad that they were separated from them as children. So young and vulnerable, it couldn’t have been easy for the both of them.
(N)Barth, being the big brother, had to protect Merig, and they found a human couple that took them in and raised them until they were old enough to be on their own. But Barth still did his best to protect his little brother, and he’s just the gentle type of person. But he can be aggressive if someone he cares about is being threatened, just like Merig does.
(S)Yeah, I’ve seen it and I felt so bad when he used himself as a shield to protect me in that dungeon. I could see the pain he was enduring, but he still did it, so I didn’t get hurt.
(N)And you took care of him after it happened.
(S)I did because I felt it was my responsibility since he got hurt for my sake. I sat right over there at his bedside until he fully healed and we spent a lot of time together and talked so much.
(N)You and Barth are similar to Kate and Merig. You, Kate, and the others rescued him from that dungeon and Kate destroyed the seal. Before that, Merig rescued Kate from being taken to that bandit camp and being held hostage. Those two love each other more than anyone could comprehend, and it seems you and Barth are the same way. He shielded you and got severely injured and you took the time to be there and helped him heal and change his bandages. That’s love, my dear.
(S)I was worried that I was going to lose him, but I’m thankful every day that I was able to treat him. It seems I have a purpose in the world and there was a reason that I decided to be a healer and study medicine.
(N)You did it because of your mother, right?
(S)Yeah, she died of an illness that ultimately killed her, and because of that. I wanted to heal people and save lives.
(N)You’ve done just that. You saved Cormac’s life, Barth’s life, and the lives of others. You healed everyone after you all got out of that dungeon and came here.
(S)I also helped treat them when we stopped in Tailltean and I sat at Barth’s bedside then as well. He confessed his love for me in the dungeon, and that was when I confessed to him, too.
(N)Even in a situation like that, you both still found the time to tell the other how you felt and that you love each other. I think that’s very romantic and Barth is just elated to be with you.
(S)I’m the same way, and I want us to live together and I want to be around him all the time. Even after six months, I still get butterflies when I see him.
(N)So does Kate when she’s around Merig. They’ve been together for over a year, and now Kate is pregnant. She’s the happiest that I’ve ever seen her in this past year, especially with that belly of hers. She’s over the moon to be having a child with Merig and I’m more than happy to be giving her the weekly checkups she needs.
(S)It’s just so beautiful to see her and Merig so happy to be starting a family together. Being the age that I am right now, I want that as well. But the fact that I’m still a virgin and scared is what’s stopping me.
(N)If it’s what you want, then go for it, Sarah. Nothing is stopping you and Barth from living a happy life together, getting married, and starting a family.
(S)[blush] You really think he would want to do that with me?
(N)I don’t think, I know, especially the way he looks at you like you’re the only woman in the world, is proof of that.
(S)Maybe it’s time to stop being afraid and start thinking about my future and not just as a healer. I want more in my life and I don’t see why it can’t happen.
(N)Then go for it. You have someone who loves and cares for you more than you understand, and you will understand soon enough. You both will.
(S)I’m sure when we do, we’ll be as happy as Kate and Merig are.
(N)But you already are, you just don’t notice it. You’ll see what I mean if Barth does come to see you for lunch.
(S)[smiles] I guess I will.
The women's conversation continues, their voices gentle and soothing, until the door creaks open and Barth enters, bringing a warm smile to their quiet afternoon. The women turn to greet him, their faces lighting up with welcome. Barth closes the door behind him, his eyes meeting Sarah's, a tender smile spreading across his face. Sarah's face radiates joy as she rises from her seat, her eyes locked on Barth's. She glides towards him, her smile growing wider, their eyes never leaving each other's gaze. As she approaches, Barth's hand reaches out, gently cradling Sarah's chin, his thumb tracing the curve of her jaw. He leans in, his lips meeting Sarah's in a soft, loving kiss, filled with affection and warmth. Nessa looks on, a gentle smile on her face, happy to witness the love shared between the two. The moment is serene, filled with the gentle warmth of their connection.
(B)Good afternoon, beautiful.
(S)Good afternoon, and what brings you here?
(B)I just thought I’d stop by and bring you some lunch. I’m sure you’re hungry from working so hard.
(S)[smiles] You know you don’t have to do this every day.
(B)I know, but I want to and it gives me an excuse to come and see you, and kiss you, and tell you that I love you.
(S)[giggles] I love you, too, and I really appreciate it, Barth. Thank you.
(B)Anything for you, my rabbit. Hey Nessa.
(N)Hey Barth, Sarah was just talking about you.
(B)Oh really?
(S)[blush] I was just telling her how wonderful you are bringing me lunch every day and how much I appreciate you.
(B)[chuckles] It’s the least I can do since you’re such a wonderful person too, Sarah. And you saved my life once again.
(S)[smiles] That was six months ago, Barth, haven’t you shown me enough gratitude?
(B)Not as much as I’d like to. I’m sorry if it’s too much.
(S)No, not at all. It’s just all so new to me, that’s all.
(B)I know what you mean, it’s new to me, too. But hey, we can experience it together. We had our first date, our first kiss, and our first relationship. I’m very much enjoying it.
(S)Oh, I am too, I just…
(B)What’s wrong?
(S)Nothing, there are some things I want to talk to you about, but I don’t think we should do it here.
(N)I’ll go on a lunch break and leave you two here alone. You’re free to talk in private while I’m gone.
(S)Okay, Nessa, I’ll see you later then.
Nessa rises from her seat, wrapping her cloak around her shoulders for warmth, and heads towards the door. She exits the building, closing the door behind her, leaving Sarah and Barth to their private conversation. Barth hands Sarah her lunch, which she accepts with a smile, and walks over to her workstation, placing it on her desk. The two then sit down, Sarah in her chair, and Barth in Nessa's empty seat, creating a cozy setting. They begin to talk, their conversation flowing easily, as they sit together in comfortable silence, the only sound is the gentle hum of their voices.
(S)Look, I know everything is so new to the both of us and it’s been wonderful being with you, Barth.
(B)...You’re not leaving me, are you?
(S)No no, of course not, we made a promise to each other and I intend to keep it.
(B)[sigh] That’s a relief, I thought I did something wrong.
(S)No, sweetheart, you did nothing wrong, quite the opposite. I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship and how far I want it to go. We’ve been together this long, and it’s as if we’re still dating, but we’re in a more serious relationship. We haven’t taken any big steps, and it’s probably because I’m so scared, but also ignorant since this is my first ever relationship with someone.
(B)It’s because I’m a goblin, isn’t it?
(S)No, I promise it has nothing to do with that. Honestly, I don’t mind my first relationship being with you, and it doesn’t bother me that you’re not human.
(B)I’m glad to hear that, my beautiful rabbit and I’m glad my first relationship is with you, I don’t care if you’re human…I love you.
(S)[smiles] Oh Barth, I love you, too, and I’ve had such a wonderful time with you so far. Which is why I’m proposing the idea of us possibly living together.
(B)[smiles] Really? Is that something you really want?
(S)[nods] Would you be opposed to it?
(B)Not at all. I’ve been thinking about that too, and ironically, I was going to propose the same idea. I just didn’t want you to feel like I was pressuring you.
(S)I wouldn’t feel that way at all, Barth, and I really love the idea.
(B)I do, too, I think it’s a great idea.
(S)I’m sorry, I’ve just been so apprehensive about talking about it.
(B)There’s no need to be sorry. I was waiting until you were ready to talk about it.
(S)Well, I think I’m ready. What about you?
(B)[smiles] Of course, I am, let’s talk.
(S)[smiles] Okay, I’m not sure where to start.
(B)Well, when do you want to move in together?
(S)I mean, we can start soon, whenever I get some free time and a day or so off. The question is, who would be moving in with who?
(B)Well, I remember you saying that you wanted to move closer to all of us.
(S)That’s right, I live on a completely different side of the city from you all and you’re all pretty close together. Especially since Cormac moved in with Deirdre, who lives right behind Kate and Merig.
(B)So you could move in with me, so we can be close to everyone. I just live a street or two over from Kate and Merig as well.
(S)I think that’s a great idea. Now I just have to talk to Nessa to get a day or so off to move after I’m done packing. I don’t have much in my home so it won’t take long. I’ll most likely pack my things before I go to bed each night I go home.
(B)I can help you move things.
(S)Only if you want to.
(B)Of course, I don’t mind at all.
(S)There’s something else I want to talk about, but I'm not sure if I’m ready yet.
(B)That’s okay, take your time.
(S)I’m just nervous. This is all so new to us both.
(B)Honestly, that’s okay, we can experience new things and not know what to do. There’s no right or wrong way to do certain things, you just have to do it and see what happens. Of course, we just keep doing what we’re already doing, and if we want to take steps to try new things, that’s okay too. Whatever you want to do together, I’m more than okay with it.
(S)But what if there’s something you want to do? I want to do those things as well and I don’t want to be the only one benefiting from them.
(B)Hey, I benefit from being with you every day, because I’m happy. You make me very happy, Sarah, and not a minute goes by when I don’t benefit from just looking at you. Admiring how beautiful you are, kissing you, holding you in my arms, and telling you that I love you like we talked about in the dungeon when we first confessed. I do all of those things and I don’t care who’s watching, as long as I get to do those things with you. I’m happy and that’s what I benefit from this relationship.
(S)[smiles] I benefit the same way, Barth, and the feeling is very intoxicating and I very much enjoy it.
(B)[smiles] So do I and I don’t ever want that feeling to go away. I want to experience everything with you no matter what it is, and I’ll do it with a smile because I’m happy to do anything with you.
(S)I am too, Barth, I know it’ll be scary for me since anything we do will be a first for me.
(B)That’s okay, it’ll be a first for me as well and I’ll be right there. You don’t have to be scared. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you or do things that would cause you harm, physically or mentally.
(S) I know you wouldn’t, sweetheart. I trust you. I wouldn’t do anything like that to you either. Life can be scary and so can love, whether in a good way or a bad way.
(B)Honestly, I don’t think it’s love itself but the people you’re with. Take Sean, for example. What he displayed and how he treated Kate wasn’t love, but he thought it was. People like him use love as a shield so he can fool people into thinking he’s the good guy. But when I saw what he did to Kate, I realized that behind the shield he thought was love, was something different and it was pure evil.
(S)I noticed that as well. He mentioned how he showed Kate love, but it was only a matter of time before it turned into abuse and obsession.
(B)I can promise you this, Sarah, just like Merig said to Kate, I’ll die before I do anything like that to you. May the gods strike me down if I’m lying to you, but my intentions are only to love you and not harm you, because that’s not love.
(S)Oh sweetheart, I believe you, not once have you shown me a reason to think you would hurt me. I’d never do that to you either.
(B)Of course not, you’ve done nothing but heal me and treat the wounds that hurt me. You treat pain. You don’t cause it.
(S)Of course not, also how is Kate doing? Did you see her today?
(B)Yeah, she was at the pub. She came in not long after Merig, myself, and the others got there.
(S)How is she?
(B)She said she’s been sleeping more lately, hence why she came in so late in the afternoon.
(S)She’s getting much further into this pregnancy. I’m sure it’s taking quite a bit of energy out of her.
(B)That’s what she told us. She let me feel her belly today, and I felt the baby kick.
(S)Oh my goodness, I bet it was an amazing experience.
(B)It definitely was, and I talked to my nephew inside her belly. He heard me talking, and he kicked to let me know.
(S)I’ve felt him kick as well, and it’s a wonderful experience. Kate will even sing to her belly, and he’s very active when she does.
(B)Merig told us that and I think it’s wonderful that she does that. She’s forming a bond with her son and I’m so happy about it.
(S)Me too. Despite losing her first child, she’s still so happy about this one being a success and she’s forming that bond with her child while he’s still growing inside her belly. A mother’s love is a powerful thing and the bond with her child is even more powerful.
(B)It really is, also something did happen before I left.
(S)Is everything okay?
(B)Yeah, Kate was letting Cormac feel her belly for a bit and when he was helping her to her seat, a man walked by and bumped into Kate. She stumbled and almost fell, but Cormac grabbed her and caught her. We’re convinced he did it on purpose, and Merig, of course being the protective husband that he is, got up and confronted the man. He wasn’t happy in the least and even took the man outside because the shouting was causing Kate’s baby to move around a bit excessively and it was hurting Kate a little.
(S)Oh no, I know she told me the baby is very sensitive to sound. Seeing as it’s a tiny goblin, I’m sure even in the womb he has acute hearing.
(B)Yep, you’re correct. That’s what my mother told me when she was pregnant with Merig. I got to witness it myself, and Merig was very sensitive to sound inside and outside of the womb.
(S)That’s amazing, I just hope Kate is alright.
(B)She’s fine. Merig was just so upset with the man, that he didn’t take into account how uncomfortable it was for Kate with the baby moving around. Merig took him outside and dealt with him there, and Sherry even banned him. Merig came back and apologized to Kate and everything was fine now.
(S)Good, I’d hate it if those two were upset with each other. It would break my heart.
(B)We understood her pain, but we told her he was just doing his job as a husband and father. He’s protective, but he can overdo it as well and he was aware of that, so he apologized to her.
(S)Well, I’m glad everything is okay now and that man should be ashamed.
(B)Agreed, He admitted to doing it on purpose because she’s pregnant with a Fomor child.
(S)[sigh] Why can’t people just mind their own business?
(B)Everyone in the city knows that Kate is married to a Fomor and is now pregnant with his offspring. So we can expect the people in the city who don’t like Fomors to voice their distaste for it. But the good thing about that is. It weeds out those people and we deal with them accordingly if they ever cause problems for Kate and Merig.
(S)Good and I’m glad that Kate and Merig choose to be happy despite those people.
(B)Of course, Merig is the commander of the Royal Guards and he is also Kate’s husband and the father of the child she’s carrying. When it comes to her, he doesn’t give a shit. He’ll confront them. He has the power to do something about it, so he takes advantage of it to keep Kate safe.
(S)I understand that, but he is overdoing it, don’t you think?
(B)I agree he’s becoming a bit overzealous, but that’s just how he is and Kate understands that and she still loves him. I mean, they’ve essentially rescued each other from dangerous situations. It’s normal to be protective. Seeing as she’s pregnant, Merig is more inclined to protect her.
(S)As long as he’s not being destructive and causing harm to Kate.
(B)Oh, he realized that, and that’s why he apologized.
(S)Good, I hope he learns from it, but I’m glad everything is okay. I expect Kate will drop by in the next day or so for her weekly checkup.
(B)Yeah, she’s looking forward to it.
(S)Well, if you want, we can sit here and talk some more while I eat.
(B)Sounds good to me.
Barth and Sarah settle into a comfortable rhythm, their conversation weaving seamlessly through the afternoon. Sarah savors her lunch, the flavors dancing on her tongue as she chats with her beloved. Later, in the warm glow of the evening, Kate and Merig retreat to their cozy bedroom, dressed in comfortable night clothes. Merig sits on the edge of the bed, his strong hands massaging Kate's feet, his gentle touch working like magic. Kate sits up and reclines against the pillows, a blissful smile playing on her lips as her hands cradle and rub her growing belly, a gentle caress that sends a ripple of contentment through her as she chats with Merig.
(K)I’m sorry I had you rub my feet, honey. They’ve just been killing me lately.
(M)Hey, you know I don’t mind. You’ve rubbed my feet before, so we’re even.
(K)That’s because I didn’t mind either, you work hard so there was no reason why I couldn’t.
(M)Well, the same goes for you. Besides, you’re literally carrying a tiny goblin inside your belly. It’s the least I can do for the mother of my child.
(K)[smiles] This is why you’re my wonderful husband.
(M)[smiles] And you’re my beautiful wife, with her beautiful pregnant belly. I do want to apologize again for this afternoon. I wasn’t thinking when I was angry and I should be more mindful of you and others around me. There’s a time and a place to do things and I don’t want people looking at me in a terrible light as the commander of the guards, as well as a husband and soon-to-be father.
(K)[sigh] I was just upset because the baby was moving around a lot when you raised your voice. But I know you were just doing what you had to, and even I was angry with the man for doing what he did.
(M)Yeah, but I should’ve lowered my voice and considered your well-being. I promise it won’t happen again, my moon. I know I was in the wrong.
(K)I forgive you, my earth, and so does the baby.
(M)I hope so because I wouldn’t want either of you to hate me or be upset with me. I love you both and I have to make sure both of you are okay.
(K)I know you do, honey, and I understand why you’re so protective. Sean caused so much damage to me, that I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to get pregnant again.
(M)That’s why I’m here to make sure nothing bad happens to you or our child.
(K)I appreciate what you’re doing, my love. You’re a wonderful husband and you’re going to be just as wonderful of a father to our tiny goblin.
(M)You know, it wasn’t too long ago when you and I first got together. Before that, I was already in love with you, but you didn’t know it yet.
(K)[giggles] How could I ever forget? I’ve been in Tara for two years now and I remember the way you looked at me when we first met.
(M)At that moment, you were all that I saw and time just stopped for a moment.
(K)Not knowing that moment was going to change both of our lives, we both just didn’t know it yet.
(M)You fell in love with a hideous goblin like me.
(K)You stop it, you’re not hideous, no matter what anyone says.
(M)I know, because the only person’s opinion that matters to me is yours.
(K)That’s right and only your opinion matters to me.
(M)It just makes me feel lucky that you wanted to be with me, then I asked you to marry me.
(K)[smiles] I did, and we got married and then went on our honeymoon, where our bond as husband and wife got stronger and we became one with our bodies and souls. And now look where we are, about to be parents, it’s my dream come true.
(M)[smiles] Time flies, but at the same time, being with you, time seems to slow down so that we can enjoy it with each other.
(K)I noticed that, too, I’ll never forget any of it. They’re memories I cherish and are unforgettable.
(M)I’m just glad your parents approved of me, considering what you went through with Sean.
(K)Well, you proved yourself to be the opposite of Sean and that’s all they wanted for me. They wanted me to find someone who was loving and kind and they were happy that I met you. When I told them everything, they knew I had found the one.
(M)I knew I had found the one, too.
(K)[smiles] Oh, I forgot to tell you, my dad’s birthday is next week and I want to send him something.
(M)Okay, we can do that. Do you know what you want to send him?
(K)I’ll go out to the market sometime soon and see what I can find for him.
(M)I can go with you.
(K)Honey, you go everywhere with me. You have better things to do.
(M)You’re right, I do and that includes helping you. What if something happens and I’m not there?
(K)I’ll be fine, Merig. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve gone out on my own.
(M)But your belly wasn’t this big, and you weren’t in as much pain. I want to be there if something happens.
(K)Merig honey, do you see how overprotective you’ve been? You can’t even do your duties as the commander.
(M)I told you before, that my first and most important duty is to you, sweetheart. And also I told you that I’d be dedicating my time to you while you’re pregnant and I meant that.
(K)I remember you telling me that. I just didn’t think it would be every time I go out. I can always have a guard escort me, maybe Gordo or Cormac. Cormac’s reflex to catch me from falling today was impressive.
(M)I just would feel more at ease if I were there with you. You forget, I am still a Royal Guard, but I’m the commander and I call the shots. If I want to take the time from my duties to make sure my wife is safe in public, I have the power to do that. Even Eirawen told me that you were my most important priority when we were planning our wedding, remember?
(K)[sigh] Of course, I remember, she said the same thing when I told her I was pregnant.
(M)Exactly and whatever the queen says, goes. She’s the queen, after all.
(K)[giggles] I guess you’re right, and you’re the commander.
(M)And you’re the commander’s wife, carrying the commander’s offspring in your belly.
(K)Alright you win again, my love, but I’ll concede because I love you that much.
(M)I just want to make sure for myself that you’re going to be okay. I honestly don’t trust anyone else, but maybe the other goblins.
(K)Well, I’m sure Cormac or Barth would like to come along.
(M)Barth would be out in the forest with Larry and Gordo. Cormac can come with us and even Deirdre can tag along if she wants to.
(K)You know she’ll want to. She and Cormac are in that honeymoon phase like you and I were.
(M)[chuckles] Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. I’m happy for them both. I’m sure they’ll be planning their wedding soon.
(K)It took a couple of months for Larry and Ash to plan theirs. I was happy to get a part of it and at that time I was about four months pregnant then. I was worried that I would draw attention as her maid of honor, but she didn’t seem to mind and luckily, she let me wear a comfy dress.
(M)Yeah, I remember and I was Larry’s best man. The wedding was perfect, just like ours was.
(K)Ash looked so gorgeous in the red dress that she wore for my wedding as my maid of honor. I’m just glad those two are finally married. They’re both happy.
(M)Yep, they are and so are we, over six months later and we have a baby on the way already.
(K)[smiles] Crazy, isn’t it? I’m so happy to be having this child with you, my love.
(M)I’d like to talk to my son if that’s okay.
(K)Of course, honey, he’s still moving around until I lay down and go to sleep, then he’s pretty quiet.
(M)Well, I better say goodnight, then.
(K)[smiles] He hasn’t heard from his dad all day, except for when you shouted earlier.
(M)I guess I have to apologize to him as well.
Kate gently withdraws her feet from Merig's lap, and he rises from the edge of the bed, his movements fluid and graceful. He walks around to his side of the bed, his eyes never leaving Kate's serene face. Merig slips into bed, his body language relaxed and loving. Kate settles into her pillow, her eyes gazing up at Merig with affection. Merig props himself up on his left arm, his free hand gently cradling Kate's belly, his touch tender and reverent. He softly rests his head on her belly, putting his ear against it, his eyes closing as he begins to speak in a soft, gentle voice.
(M)Hey son, I’m sorry about earlier. I know my shouting caused you to be restless and I’m sorry. Your mother almost got hurt, and I had to deal with the person that caused it. I showed him my red eyes, and he was terrified. He looked like he pissed himself. It was funny. I know I’ve been pretty protective of your mother and it’s because she’s carrying you in here, and I don’t know what I would do if either of you got hurt. It’s my job as your dad to protect you both, and I hope you understand that. Your mother and I love you and I hope you can forgive me. I'll be just as protective when you're out here. No one will ever hurt you or your mom, and I hope you won't hate me for it. You both are the best things to ever happen to me.
(K)He's calm now, he stopped moving, which means he's fallen asleep.
(M)Good, I still want to listen to your heartbeats, it's so soothing.
(K)It is and we should probably follow our son's lead and get some sleep.
(M)You're absolutely right, I’m sure you’re tired after today.
(K)I’m just tired in general. This child is so active during the day, it drains so much energy from me and I’m so worn out at night.
(M)Alright, I’ll say goodnight to him. Hey, son, you get some sleep, alright? Don’t give your mother too much trouble while she sleeps. You both get some rest. Goodnight son, I love you.
(K)Goodnight, my baby, it won’t be long until we get to meet you.
(M)I can’t wait.
(K)Me neither, but for now, let’s get some sleep, my love.
(M)Of course.
Merig's lips brush against Kate's belly in a tender kiss, a gesture of love and affection. He then settles into bed, getting comfortable on his pillow, and pulls the blanket over Kate, enveloping her in warmth. Kate snuggles closer to Merig, still on her back, and he wraps his arm around her shoulders, cradling her head in a gentle embrace. His other hand finds its way to her belly, caressing and rubbing it with soothing strokes. Kate turns her head, her eyes meeting Merig's, and they share a soft, loving smile. The moment is filled with warmth and tenderness. Merig leans in, his lips meeting Kate's in a gentle, loving kiss, the soft pressure a testament to their deep connection.
(K)I’m sorry I can’t turn over, or I’ll disturb the baby.
(M)Don’t be, I can still hold you all night as usual. Besides, I get to rub this beautiful belly to help you sleep.
(K)It does help me fall asleep, I'll admit. Thank you, my love.
(M)For what?
(K)Everything you’ve done for me, you’ve done so much and I honestly don’t know how you’ve put up with me.
(M)Hey, I could say the same. I know I’ve been a pain since you’ve been pregnant.
(K)Merig, honey, you’ve done so much for me, more than I could ever ask for. You’ve saved my life more than once. You rescued me, and you died in my arms protecting me. You’ve been wonderful to me and you haven’t done anything to hurt me intentionally. You protected me from Sean the best you could, but he ended up taking you away from me and I had to rescue you as well.
(M)I’m sorry, I know it wasn’t easy, and you got hurt in the process.
(K)I don’t care. I told you I’d risk my own life just as you did for me to bring you back to me. You’re the love of my life, my goblin, my earth, and I couldn’t let Sean take you from me. We destroyed the seals and gave Sean what he deserved and now he’s put away for life.
(M)I still enjoy visiting him every week, and I show him my red eyes and that side of me. It terrifies him, but I get joy out of hurting and scaring him.
(K)It honestly brings me joy as well, knowing he’s getting what he deserves. I honestly think I should go in and show him my pregnant belly. That would surely piss him off.
(M)No, I don’t want you to go there. He could hurt you.
(K)Isn’t he locked up in a cell?
(M)Yeah but, I don’t know if I want to risk it.
(K)You’ll be there if anything happens. It’s not like I’ll go alone. I want to show him what he failed to destroy and to further shame him for what he did to me.
(M)[sigh] I understand and you have every right to do that, considering what happened to you. I guess the next time I go there, you can come with me and I’ll keep a close eye on him.
(K)I just want him to see what he almost destroyed and I still owe Cormac and Gordo a lot for coming to my rescue.
(M)That’s why I made them lieutenant and sergeant and they’re happy about that. I owe them for rescuing us as well. They’re both heroes.
(K)Maybe Eirawen can make them knights as well. I’m sure Barth and Larry would like to be knighted, too.
(M)I’m sure they would love that, I’ll talk to Eirawen about it when we go to the prison to see Sean.
(K)Sounds good. I haven’t seen Eirawen in a while and I’m sure she would love to see my belly and how much it’s grown.
(M)I’m sure she will be ecstatic, but for now let’s get some sleep, my moon.
(K)Yes, of course, my earth, I love you so much and I’m grateful to you every day.
(M)I love you, and I’m grateful to you too. Goodnight, my beautiful wife and the mother of our child.
(K)Goodnight my wonderful husband and father of our child.
Merig's hand gently caresses Kate's cheek, his touch filled with love and affection, before he leans in for a tender goodnight kiss. His hand continues to rub Kate's pregnant belly, a soothing gesture that speaks to his devotion. Kate snuggles deeper, covering herself and Merig with the blanket, and they gaze into each other's eyes, smiling softly. As they drift off to sleep, their hearts are filled with warmth and love.
