Behind the grave of Gong Haiyan's husband, there were four more graves, totaling five. Unlike the others adorned with headstones, these five graves appeared somewhat desolate.
"These four graves are where the deceased members of the Zhang family rest, and I don't know the circumstances of the deaths in two of them. These two belong to my husband's younger uncle and aunt," Gong Haiyan explained, pointing to the paired graves behind her husband's.
Her husband's younger uncle, who owned a medium-sized interior decoration company, had inexplicably succumbed to depression. One day, driven to despair, he intoxicated himself and hung from a crooked-necked tree. A year later, his wife, unable to bear the sorrow, chose to end her life by ingesting poison.
Both were known for their generosity and optimistic outlook on life. Their suicides were unexpected by those who knew them.
"How long ago did your husband's younger uncle and aunt take their own lives?" Chen Yuanshan asked, looking at the two graves.
"Four years ago. The younger uncle hanged himself, and a year later, three years ago, the aunt took her own life by poisoning," Gong Haiyan replied.
Chen Yuanshan listened to her account, then glanced at the ancestral grave of the Zhang family to the right.
Stolen novel; please report.
"Xiao He, give me the compass," Chen Yuanshan extended his hand to me.
I nodded in agreement and retrieved the compass from the yellow cloth bag, handing it to Chen Yuanshan.
Holding the compass, Chen Yuanshan stood in front of the Zhang family's ancestral grave. He glanced at the compass, then surveyed the surroundings.
"Standing here and looking around, I can't see any issues with this grave site," Chen Yuanshan muttered to Gong Haiyan and her sister.
With the compass in hand, Chen Yuanshan walked around the ancestral grave, checking the readings every two steps. He would lower his head to observe the compass and then continue scanning the surroundings.
"By the way, Master Chen, my husband told me about a Feng Shui story in our Zhang family. The ancestral grave has been here for over a hundred years. Our ancestors were wealthy landlords who believed in Feng Shui. They sought the help of a skilled Feng Shui master to find an auspicious burial site.
The master spent a month scouring the hills around Yunhai City and finally identified this location. He told our ancestors that as long as they buried the bones of an immortal here, the Zhang family's descendants would lead prosperous lives.
The Feng Shui master warned our ancestors that by stepping on this specific spot, he would lose his sight, but promised care and support in return. Zhang's ancestor agreed, and the day after burying his father's remains here, the master indeed went blind. Zhang's ancestor fulfilled his promise, providing for the master until his death. Zhang's descendants even mourned the master's passing when the time came.
Gong Haiyan shared the Feng Shui tale of the Zhang family with us.
"A Feng Shui master who discloses the secrets for others and steps on the auspicious spot invites..."
