12: Underworld Express

12: Underworld Express

The bus driver abruptly slammed on the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a sudden stop. I, unprepared, tumbled forward with a clumsy "plop," landing on the floor, my vision filled with twinkling stars.

The rear door of the bus opened with a slow creak. I, disheveled and embarrassed, hastily crawled my way out.

As I regained my footing, the bus's rear door closed, and it continued its journey without a hitch.

I scrutinized the peculiar bus, noticing that its four wheels didn't rotate, and it hovered about ten centimeters above the ground. Unless observed closely, it appeared almost normal. The side of the bus read "Underworld Express," with a license plate stating "地98752."

"What on earth is going on?" I mumbled in fear, watching the bus vanish into the distance. I climbed to my feet, legs trembling.

No sooner had I stood than another bus pulled up beside me and came to a halt.

The driver opened the door, but this time I hesitated, examining the bus with caution. The wheels rested on the ground, the engine hummed a familiar tune, and there was no "Underworld Express" written on the side. The license plate read "云F: 66993," and everything seemed normal.

"Are you getting on, or not? If not, I'm leaving," the impatient driver scowled at me, interrupting my scrutiny.

"Fine, I'm coming," I replied, boarding the bus.

Inside, I observed the passengers. Most were engrossed in their phones, dressed ordinarily. Seating myself, I reflected on the bizarre events, beads of cold sweat forming on my forehead.

Arriving in the city, I switched to another bus heading to East Street in the New City District.

Situated to the east of the city center, New City had become a thriving district in the last decade. The best schools, hospitals, malls, and supermarkets were located here, attracting various government offices and making it increasingly prosperous.

Arriving at 68 East Street, I found another Taoist hall named "Spirit Way Hall." Adorned with advertisements for palmistry, physiognomy, fortune-telling, naming ceremonies, yin-yang house Feng Shui, and auspicious day selection, it resembled Daozun Hall in every aspect.

Entering Spirit Way Hall, I encountered a young woman inside. Aged around twenty, she had fair skin, delicate features, and a topknot adorned with a jade hairpin. With willow-leaf eyebrows and long eyelashes, her big, watery eyes were captivating. Her high nose led to a cherry-like mouth.

Standing at about 1.67 meters tall, she weighed around 100 kilograms. Wearing a black sheer long coat over a white robe, paired with oversized black pants and black cloth shoes, she presented a unique ensemble.

With an air of innocence and beauty, she was currently wiping down tables, chairs, and shelves with a cloth.

In a trance, I stood there, momentarily forgetting why I had come.
