23: Fateful Encounter with the Bandits

"I've been quite accommodating to you both. Stop wasting time and get out of the car. Let's not delay each other any further," Chen Yuanshan urged us as we stood outside the car.

"Master Chen, if this matter isn't resolved, we won't be able to stay in this house. Please, do us a kindness and take us with you," my dad pleaded.

I was scared, and so was my dad. In our hearts, Chen Yuanshan was our lifeline. We had grasped onto this lifeline, and it was unimaginable to let go.

"I've rarely been impressed in my life, but I genuinely respect you two. Alright, go down, lock the door behind you," Chen Yuanshan compromised.

"We don't have anything valuable at home, nothing to steal. No need to lock the door. Just focus on driving," my dad reassured.

"I've seldom respected anyone in my life, but you two, I genuinely do," Chen Yuanshan said helplessly, driving us towards the city.

On the way back, my dad curiously asked Chen Yuanshan several questions about supernatural beings. However, Chen Yuanshan remained silent, ignoring my dad's inquiries.

Seeing that Chen Yuanshan wasn't in the mood for conversation, my dad wisely stopped probing further.

When we reached Fuyuan Alley, it was already dark. All the shops in Fuyuan Alley were closed.

Next to Daocan Hall was a paper effigy shop. Although the shop was closed, the inside was illuminated by a dim red light. On either side of the entrance were paper effigies of a boy and a girl. The boy wore a blue gown with a gold-stamped longevity character, while the girl donned an outfit adorned with dragon and phoenix patterns, along with two hair buns.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

As I stared at the paper effigies, they seemed to be staring back at me. The paper effigy of the girl appeared to be smiling, and I couldn't help but take a couple of steps back, feeling a bit frightened.

Entering Daocan Hall, I checked the clock on the wall. It was already past 8 PM, and I could feel my stomach growling.

Perhaps it was psychological, but I sensed a faint smell of feces lingering in Daocan Hall.

Recalling how I had embarrassed myself earlier by soiling my pants, my face turned beet red. It was undoubtedly the most humiliating thing I had ever done in my life.

"My place is quite far from the city center. Ordering food online is not an option since no one will deliver here. I can only make fried sauce noodles. If you don't want to eat, I'll make a bowl for myself," Chen Yuanshan offered, hanging his bag and copper coin sword on the wall.

"I don't have anything valuable at home. There's nothing to steal. No need to lock the door. I've rarely respected anyone in my life, but you two, I genuinely do," Chen Yuanshan sighed, then drove in the direction of the city.

As we headed back to the city, my dad, realizing he had the chance, asked Chen Yuanshan several questions about supernatural beings. However, Chen Yuanshan remained silent, paying no attention to my dad's queries.

Feeling the silence, my dad wisely refrained from further probing.

When we arrived at Fuyuan Alley, darkness had fully settled in. The shops in Fuyuan Alley were all closed.

Next to Daocan Hall was a paper effigy shop, its door locked. However, a dim red light emanated from within. On either side of the entrance stood paper effigies of a boy and a girl, wearing traditional outfits.

Staring at these effigies, it felt like they were observing me. The girl's effigy seemed to be smiling, and a shiver ran down my spine. I quickly stepped inside Daocan Hall.

Checking the wall clock, it was already past 8 PM. I felt a pang of hunger, and the memory of my embarrassing bathroom incident came flooding back. My face flushed with embarrassment.

"Chen Master, could you please make me a bowl of fried sauce noodles? Thank you," I requested politely, bowing in gratitude.

Today, I had inconvenienced Chen Yuanshan quite a bit. Though he seemed annoyed, he didn't reject us outright.
