CHAPTER 9. ELECTIVES

Darrick was back again at the staff building. Unlike last time when he was wandering around to find Professor Zelkrat's office, this time he did not need to do that. He had seen Professor William's office the last time he was wandering around here.

Now that he knew where it was, he just walked there and arrived outside of Professor William's office, them he knocked on the door twice. A guy opened the door, he had a tired look on his face and dark circles like he hadn't slept for a few days. The hair was also messy like he hadn't combed them in a while.

The guy eyed Darrick up and down, then he gestured for Darrick to come inside while saying,

"Professor William isn't here for now, If it's something important then you can wait here until the professor comes. It's almost time for the professor to return."

Darrick nodded slightly acknowledging the words and entered inside. There he sat down on a sofa with no words. Darrick didn't know if this guy could help him with the work he came for but Darrick ultimately decided against the idea, simply because of the state the guy was in right now. For now, he decided it was best to wait for Professor William.

I think.. No, I'm sure this guy is an assistant professor. Only assistants do that kind of paperwork. Darrick eyed the massive pile of papers beside the guy. The inhuman level of papers piled up there was so much that one could die if it fell on someone.

Yeah, I definitely shouldn't disturb that guy, he looks like someone who is hanging on the last thread, what if he snaps at me? Too bothersome. Since the assistant professor was out of the question for the bother and there wasn't anyone else to bother, Darrick started scanning the room for something interesting while he waited.

The room was bright as it had large windows for the light and fresh wind to come through. There was no excess furniture in the room, it was mostly a few chairs, a sofa set, a main desk for Professor William and an extra desk for the assistant. On the side of the assistant, there were a lot of papers scattered around haphazardly like it was in contrast to the other parts of the room because all of the other places were crystal clear.

Looks like a lot of work. Is he even allowed to go home at all? That much paperwork can't be done a day or two by any normal but he could be some kind of mage, right? Darrick was wondering about the living conditions of the assistant, then the door opened and a man entered the office.

By the looks of how he entered it was most probably the Professor William, He did not knock or ask to come in, in fact, the door opened itself for the man. When he turned to look at the professor Darrick noticed he looked a lot similar to someone he had met before.

Walter Jeskins. There are so many similarities between their build, their facial geometry is literally the same and their nose looks pretty similar. The blue-coloured eyes and blonde hair are just dead giveaways they were related. Maybe they are brothers, could be cousins but not that likely.

Professor looked at Darrick and asked, "Hello student, It looks like you need some assistance from me so what is the reason you are here." Professor William did not waste any words and got straight to the point.

"Well, hello professor, I came here for the elective. I have yet to choose the subjects I want to study."

"Okay, I understand. Let me check for a minute. Only a few of the students' electives weren't selected yet because we did not have enough people for work. What's your name again?"

"Darrick Vental. Then I can be done with it now, right? Or is there anything else?"

"There is nothing else you need to worry about. It can be done as quickly as you choose your subjects if there aren't any problems with your records." Professor clarified.

What are records now, where do these new terms randomly pop out from?

"Professor William, even though I got my admission certificate in the mail, there was nothing mentioned there about electives or anything else at all about the Caladric Academy. Was that also because of the lack of manpower?"

"No, those guys are just irresponsible pricks, sometimes it becomes annoying to the point where I even think about kicking them out but the lack of competent enough manpower is the problem," the Professor replied as he was finding something in his drawer.

He did not find anything in that drawer, he found whatever he was looking for in the drawer below it. He pulled out a big notebook. Then opened a random page and gave Darrick a sheet of paper to fill. It was the paper with every available subject he could study here in the Caladric. There were the names of the subjects and boxes in front of them to choose from.

"You must choose at least four subjects, a minimum designated by the academy a very long time ago and eight subjects must be the maximum one student can take. You just have to tick them, the boxes in front of your chosen subject should be marked. You can pick from any of the four sections and it's okay to leave a whole section and pick two from another section." He explained.

There were a total of four sections Science, Commerce, Humanities and Magic. Three typical ones he saw in his previous life too and one world-specific, it was an option because there is magic in this world after all. All of them had many options to choose from like mathematics, physics and many more on science stream and history, geographies on humanities like usual but the interesting part was magic.

The magic stream had six subjects to choose from. They were Spell craft, Magic engineering, Alchemy, Spirit arts, Fundamentology and Magic Sigil studies.

I can understand what is Magic engineering and Alchemy, maybe even spell craft too. I can guess mostly what they are meant to do but the other seems pretty hard or just unique I guess. It's not like I haven't seen anything on spirit arts in fiction but they vary from book to book. What are spirit arts here in this particular world? It's really a broad term and I don't know what are spirits here. I don't even wanna touch the other two. What are they even? Let's just leave those two, I don't know anything about them, not even guess.

When Darrick started thinking too deeply professor interrupted, "Darrick, I checked your records and it says you did not take the magic test, right?"

"Yes"

"And now after coming here, you requested to be tested, for the first time. The magic faculty head has approved your request for the test. Now it is approved and scheduled for after three days."

"That is correct from what I told you, According to what Professor Zelkrat said about this, what you said right now seems to be the case."

"Then you should come back after the exams. Your exam results are not determined so you would know what option you have to choose after the test. With the results in your hand you can choose however you want and if you need any information on these subjects you should refer to the library or any of the teachers. Except me of course, because I'm really busy."

"Can I take this sheet with me? I don't I will remember all of these subject names, then I would probably won't find what I'm looking for in the library."

"Yes, you should take it. That will help you a great deal if you can't memorize all of it. Also, you can ask any question about those subjects if you want right now but you will only get brief answers which won't be beneficial for both of us."

"If that's the case then I'll take my leave from here professor. I'll return after three days when I'm done with the test to fill this. Have a good day." And Darrick hurriedly left the room.

***

Darrick was walking while thinking about how choosing some subject would determine if he could return home or not. When he was returning to his dorm room he saw some more students, the ones he hadn't seen yet. They were probably the ones who arrived here just now after the long and exhausting train ride. But none of them asked for any direction from him, maybe these guys were in good enough condition to see the signboards, unlike some people.

Even if they can't find their way and get lost afterwards they can find the way themselves or some kind person would help them out like Sarah and I have more important things to do like choosing my electives rather than giving some directions.

He urgently had to get back to his room and decide on these things by going to the library. There he could find more about them in the books as Professor William said. He could also go and ask about some of them to Leon, he seemed knowledgeable in this regard.

I'll just leave the magic section alone for now until I find something about them in the library. Now that I'm left with three more sections to choose from I have a lot to think about really. This world is so different so I'm really curious about how much of change there will be with these things.

He was looking through the sheet of paper which had all of the subject's name. To look for his preferred subject he eyed all of the subjects from Humanities, commerce and science.

The most intriguing thing about this place is the world itself so learning geography is a must. I can learn about everything in this world which would be so exciting. Then history is adjacent to geography. Everything else seems pretty boring in the Humanities section.

Fuck commerce though, I know some basics on it here and there and I don't think it would change much from what I remember. Even if it did change then I can learn all about commerce somewhere else from books or something. It's not like it would be that much useful to me. But science... Science is a bit tricky to decide I would say.

As an aspiring STEM student, he kind of liked those things and prepared for those exams a lot early but because of that, he was also sick of them.

There is no Computer field here I assume. Then Maths and Physics are my only options. Even before Chemistry and Biology were very low on the priority list so I would rather not bother with them. Overall depending on how different the laws of physics are here, the maths would also change a lot. So let's just go with Maths as the first and Physics as the second option.

Darrick was comparing the education systems and such with this world's systems and magic was a variable.

I was summoned from a different world so I probably- No, I must have magical capabilities then Spellcraft and Magic engineering are given but for others, I'll decide afterwards.

As Darrick was contemplating, he already reached his room, He was just standing in front of his room. Now that he was here, he got some work to do so he entered the room and the door shut behind him slowly and completely closed.
