Selena Zelkrat's POV:
"You guessed it correctly so what do you want to be? An alchemist or a magic engineer. Think about it while drinking that blue liquid on the fourth shelf. Drink 2 mL and sit somewhere in the corner. I will arrange these things in just about five minutes."
Professor Zelkrat told Darrick so she could set up the artifacts and equipment needed for the test while Darrick waited lost in his thoughts.
Darrick Vental. What a peculiar child, his soul was barely functional three days ago and now his soul has recovered from the damage it took, three days are nowhere near enough to heal a soul to such a degree. With such a unique soul if he was just some guy from the outskirts then my disappointment would be immeasurable but I don't think I need to worry about that.
She glanced at him from the corner of her eyes, he was sitting quietly but his focus was somewhere else. It looked like he was confident a few moments ago but now he was fidgeting with his hand a lot, fortunately, he had good enough control over his emotions and was not letting it get to his head.
Three days ago his existence was tangled with all of the six principles but now they all are starting to come together already. The creation has already taken him as its host but it's not interfering with others from approaching him. I thought I could read him but it looks like my current form is not ideal for such an intricate relationship of fate.
Selena sighed and called upon all of the necessary artifacts, the artifacts came towards her floating to head her call. There were four panels of the same size and all four of them were connected to each other by the mana waves, there was no wire at all. The circuits on them ensured the connection between them through the mana network, the same mana network that was connected with all of the Caladric Academies artifacts. This network was the one that controlled all of the academic artifact so that users wouldn't be burdened by artifact usage and also recorded the artifact usage, but not everyone could connect or disconnect with this network when needed only a few were permitted and Selena was one of them.
At the centre of this room's setup, there was a stone-like artifact, the four panels took their place around the stone artifact, they were still floating but had taken their place in the air stably. This set of ancient artifacts were magical wonders but the mechanics of these artifacts were still wasn't deciphered. A few reasons for this were no one was permitted to take apart such an important artifact and the artifact was loaned by the Royal Palace.
Those palace guys only care about manpower, they don't even bother with learning about this fine piece of equipment. I bet they have more than one artifact from the Silver Age and they are still so stingy to lend them for research.
Selena knew she was mostly wrong with her assumption but she didn't bother dwelling on her mistakes as little as this. Royal Palace must have hired top experts in the field to specifically research the artifacts and she knew why they needed competent manpower but it did not stop her from being salty about it.
"Darrick come here. The artifact is ready, are you ready?"
Darrick got up from his seat, quickly came and stood at her side. "Yes I'm ready but can I ask some questions before that about these things."
"No problem at all, ask right away," Selena replied with a slight smile on her face.
"Are all these things artifacts or only some of them? I somehow think this test stone is also an artifact but I just can't imagine an artifact being in the form of rock."
"It actually is an artifact. One from the old era. Their origin and workings are pretty big mysteries. For you who is a student to feel something from the artifacts of the old era means you are blessed with a unique sense of them. It could mean you have more chance to become a magic engineer."
The creation is helping him. I guessed he must have gotten something from the creation for its thread to be connected to him but it looks like he got a lot more than just some help. What if he is the emissary of this era? The last emissary was from 2000 years ago so it must have been time for the new emissary.
"Well, are you excited to find out if you are chosen by the world or not? Even if you are not ready you should step forward and place your hands on the artifact and we will get the results in ten minutes after the calculations of your future and it will be shown in these panels."

"Uh... Does this artifact not have names?" Darrick asked hesitatingly.
Selena glanced at Darrick with an amused look because of his question. It was a random question but usually not asked question at this place and time. The students were more focused on the working of it and how accurate it is to determine their future with a simple touch.
"I, I just asked because it felt out of place for such a thing to not have a name." He tried to defend himself with an excuse.
Very amusing. He knows the name of the artifact but is trying to hide it. Does he think I was dangerous and would steal whatever he has? How cute. He is really trying his best to do something but sadly you can't hide much from this lady's gaze.
Selena prided herself on being a keen observer and very perceptive. Her conclusions through observations were rarely wrong in her long life. Someone with so much experience was bound to get more and more good at what they do and Selena was no different.
"It does have a name but we don't know what it is. After securing this from a dungeon we tried giving it some names but it does not accept any of those names. This artifact only works with the right name if you don't have the right name and still try to activate it then it won't work at all but it does not have any problem if you don't use a name to address it. It works partially fine."
"Oh really, this thing is awesome I would say. If someone finds its real name then it may unlock new uses with it, a lot more than now, right?"
"Hypothetically correct, but we don't know how to do it. This thing could be technology from not just a different era but also from a different world itself but we don't have any clue about it either."
Darrick winced at the mention of the different world and Selena did not miss that reaction, with that simple reaction she had already come up with a theory about Darrick's origin.
This child knows about the otherworld or he may even be from a different world altogether. He knows there is risk involved in disclosing the information but probably doesn't know anything else about it.
It also looked like he does not know much about magic and its basic mechanics but that's really weird. This is probably not his body and he was somehow pulled to the mortal planes but only his soul traversed here so he may not be a human at all.
If he was from one of the human migration clans then he would know about the magic a lot but if he was some non-human species who are long forgotten in the mortal world then it's not unlikely for him to not have any idea about it.
Above all, he was chosen by creation so he must be from the branch. Not only Creation but the other five from the archive are interested in him. Law of fortune is brewing something again and this child going to be in the center of it this time. Hopefully, it does not turn out like what happened 2000 years ago.
When she was reinforcing her theory of Darrick's origin and his role in the law of fortune's game, Darrick had touched the test stone but as Selena was lost in thought and did not control magic connection, the stone did not activate.
"Did I do something wrong or was it always supposed to go like this professor?" Darrick asked Selena while addressing the lack of response from the test stone for him when he touched its surface.
"Oh no, I was just lost in some thoughts and I did not moderate your process so the stone did not acknowledge the first try. Now I'm ready so you should give it another try. Just place your hand gently on the stone surface it will give a beep sound indicating the start of the process and another beep to indicate the end."
With the instruction, Darrick did as he was told to do. He placed his hands on the stone and in just a span of five seconds he heard two beeps, the first beep just when he touched the surface and another five seconds later, and then he took his hand back from the test stone.
"Now we just wait for ten minutes to get your results. Don't worry, I can tell you have good potential for magic. We only have to wait and see how your soul ratio of rigidity to flexibility is. You should check out Professor Lana or Professor Adil for your intended lectures. Professor William's classes should also be on your priority list."
"I will do some more research on it before I choose my elective tomorrow. Anyway, Professor can I ask you a question if you don't mind?"
"Ask right away, I'm always open for the questions."
"Every other professor I have heard is called by their first name but you on the other hand are called by the last name. Why is that? If it's some kind of sensitive topic then I apologize beforehand."
"I'm not the only Selena here, am I?"
"I considered that but still, it should have been you who was called like that."
"Huhu... To be honest, I just felt too old to use the name Selena now. I don't need people to call me by my name and I am already an established mage so people know me by different names. So I just let beautiful youngsters have the name."
"The results are here. As for this exam, you are the only participant, so there are no formalities and other procedures before announcing the result. I'll just say it to you right now and you can return to your room fifteen minutes from now before you experience burnout."
"Where did burnout come from? Is it because of the blue potion I drank?"
"Yes. It lets you perform in your best condition as we need the best possible data to analyze. Now don't waste any more time and listen here. I'll just summarize it."
Darrick nodded his head as Selena instructed him.
"You have a perfect soul state to be a magic engineer. 68:32. Your main focus should be on the ME but if you want to focus on a second subject then the spellcraft is the best choice. Alchemy is completely out of your reach for now but you can perform some rudimentary spirit arts if you manage to form a contract, but it's not recommended."
"That summarizes your results and if you want more details take this report paper and with that, you are excused. The first burnout would be pretty harsh on normal people so go lay down on your bed."
With that, she handed him the result and showed him out.
