Chapter 65: Rain Island

Chapter 65: Rain Island

The rain of the previous day was but a sign of more things to come, a light shower acting as a vanguard for a great typhoon. The ground around the rock became soft, sticky, and pliable. From dirt to mud to swampy water. Not enough water to make the nearby stream overflow, but enough to start to fill the depression that the rock sat in, both physical and metaphorically. A puddle formed with the rock acting as a small island.

A small insect, a beetle, that had been flying and battered in this bad weather, was struck from the sky and landed in the puddle. After a mighty struggle, it managed to swim to the rock and climb upon it. The rock acted as a lifesaving raft, an anchor of life, and a paradise island. It became this insect's entire world as it clung for dear life, hoping that it would keep it safe from the depths below until the rains above parted ways.

Multiple times it seemed like the water would consume the rock and its new burden, but instead, the puddle would overflow slightly and the excess water would flow into another smaller puddle a bit away. The water level would brush against the lower legs of the insect, already completely soaked by the rain and too tired and occupied to care.

Many hours passed, or perhaps a full day as it was hard to tell the passage of time with such thick cloud cover. Anyways, the clouds eventually went away and it happened to be daytime. Soaking up the sun, the beetle dried itself and stretched its wings, eventually becoming flight worthy once again and lifting itself into the sky. It was off to faraway lands, being able to travel a distance that the rock would never be able to see. The entire world at the tips of its wings. Except not really, as a small bird swooped down and ate it as soon as it took flight.
