Chapter 62: Faceting

Chapter 62: Faceting

Faceting is the act of carving a gem so as to become appealing to the eye, generally by making it so it will reflect light and glimmer no matter which angle it was seen from. At least, that was what a well-to-do man repeated to himself while handling a gem with a set of precision tools. He came here to perfect his craft without the hustle and bustle of the city, or so he said half an hour ago far more than once.

In comparison to a faceted gem, the rock was more hidden and under-appreciated with hints of red around the edges of where it broke off. The other rock, the nose, had far more pronounced red spots that caught the eye but was too rounded and organic to feel gemlike. Both had a certain charm to them.

The gemstone the man was faceting was red as well, a valuable ruby, worth quite a bit to humans especially when made extra shiny. Unfortunately for the man, he was unskilled and had a shaky hand. Something wilderness and being alone couldn’t really fix. Eventually, he chipped the ruby and ruined it, basically lowering the value by a massive amount unless he managed to grind it down even more into a smaller faceted gem.

The loss of potential money and another ruined gem threw him into a rage. He got up and smashed his hand into the nearest object he could find, the head of the statue. With a “Clink!” The head broke at the neck and flew off. Shocked that his hand won this battle of man vs landmark, he ran over and attempted to place the head back on, only for it to roll right back off.
