Chapter 42: Fall of an Empire

Chapter 42: Fall of an Empire

A buzzing sound filled the air as the swarm came. The vibrations from their wings seemed to tear the very sky apart. Within the forest there was a clearing, within that clearing was another forest, within that forest was another clearing, but no longer. Everywhere around the colony was wasps, a swarming mass of death and destruction. Even the rock was coated with a thick layer of these beings. The only place not touched was the very entrance of the colony itself.

Wasps were much larger than ants so one might assume that the tunnels of ants were too small for a wasp to enter. However, the ants must account for multiple ants entering and exiting at once and larger variations of ants like the queen. Besides, this was a large colony that had been constantly expanding, so it's entrance was larger than usual. Not only could a wasp enter it, but several wasps could enter it side by side. Their excessive expansion led to their downfall.

Dozens of wasps flooded the underground passages, ravaging everything they could. The ant resisted with everything they could. One, two, three, four wasps fell. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty ants fell. The wasps were too strong. With every one that died, two replaced them. The ants were seemingly innumerable as well, but this proved to be false after several rounds of fighting. All the soldiers died and left only the workers to hold the last line of defense. And then, the fighting ended.
