Chapter 8
“What are you talking about?” Aiko asked.
“Well, it means what it means. He is not answering anything. Not the phone, email, messages, text messages. The son of a bitch cut off everything and everyone,” Marshal told her.
“But it doesn’t make any sense,” Aiko asked, confused.
“Well, don’t look at me that I know every answer. Since Agustin and Calysta broke up, he put distance between himself and everyone related to her until he left the country to study in Cambridge. He was despondent that he drowned himself in mathematics all the time. It sounded like he was looking for answers in there. After a while, he didn’t even talk to me either,” Marshal said.
“Then why did he quit from Cambridge as well? Is he crazy or what?” Aiko asked.
“During the time he was in Cambridge, he didn’t talk so much. His excuse was, there were too many things that he had to do for other professors, and he was happy about it. I don’t know what happened there that he quit Cambridge and left for Geneva. He told his parents that he wanted to work in CERN as soon as possible. He got recommendations from all his professor that he could do great over there. Since then, I have tried calling him, but he didn’t answer any of them. Not even a single message,” Marshal answered, sounding concerned.
“Now you make me more worried about him than Calysta. I didn’t know that he took it that hard. The thing that I can’t grasp is, it was a mutual decision to break up, but not long after that, as you told me about Agustin, they both went crazy. Even though Calysta is at MIT and everyone is happy for her, she is really sad. Her roommate once told me that she cries every night. In the beginning, her roommate thought that maybe she was homesick, but Calysta didn’t stop crying. Even one day, she fainted in the classroom,” Aiko said.
“What is wrong with them? Are they planning to kill each other? If they like each other that much, why they broke up in the first place?” Marshal said. He was pissed off. He wanted to punch something or even someone. He was angry. He was furious. He has never been that much upset about anything, not even once. But he could see his two best friends were miserable. If he weren’t so busy in University, he would have taken a trip to see both of them and punched them both in the face. He paced back and forth. He shook his head. He didn’t know what to do. He was so surprised that their parents were so blind to see that their children were dying right in front of them. Both families were happy that their children were accepted into good universities, which might cause them the illusion that their children were delighted.

“I hope Calysta doesn’t find out that Agustin quit college. It is the last thing she needs. It will kill her. She probably blames herself for that. I know her,” Aiko said, sounding concerned.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, HUH?” Marshal snapped and shouted. “THAT ASSHOLE DIDN’T GIVE A FUCK WHEN I WAS WITH HIM, AND NOW HE IS A MAJOR PAIN IN THE ASS FOR EVERYONE. FUCK. FUCKKK. FUUUUUUUUUUCKK!” he yelled furiously and didn’t hold back. “WHEN CAN I GET A BREAK FROM THESE TWO FUCKERS? JUST TELL ME, WHEEEEEEEEEN?” Marshal asked furiously.
“DON’T YOU FUCKING RAISE YOUR FUCKING VOICE OVER ME, YOU FUCKER. HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW?” Aiko yelled back at him, and it worked. It calmed him down a bit. Now he was calmer and ashamed. He thought he should’ve yelled at those people who made him like that in the first place. He apologized. Aiko reminded him of the time he was with Agustin, so it made him laugh. Then he remembered Agustin and Calysta, both in trouble and ruining their lives, so it made him cry. When Aiko saw that Marshal was laughing and crying simultaneously, she thought that he lost it at last. She had no idea that Marshal was like that, but then she understood that he built up all those anger, and like a bomb, it exploded in a second. It was scary for her. Nobody yelled at her like that, and the last thing she wanted to do was judge Marshal when he was in the worst moment of his life. She actually liked it, to see how passionate her boyfriend was, but God forbid, he shouldn’t find out about it, or she would get yelled at now and then.
She put her hand on his head, then slowly, she let her delicate fingers go through those black hair. Marshal turned his head around and looked into Aiko’s eyes. Both of them had tears in their eyes. Marshal kissed the hand that was on his head. Then he bent close to kiss her forehead.
“Have I ever told you how lucky I am? Anybody else would have left me,” he whispered into her ear. She nodded. She loved him. She loved him so much that she forgave him the second he calmed down. While having tears in her eyes, she returned the favor and kissed him on the forehead. She knew how sweet and kind Marshal was, and for that, she’s never taken any grudge against him.
“He could have come to Harvard and be with me. Keeping that in mind, he didn’t want to stay in the same COUNTRY that Calysta was in. He is that stupid,” Marshal observed. They both chuckled, but in a matter of seconds, it died off. Then suddenly, Aiko looked at Marshal in the eyes. Marshal saw fear and excitement.
“What is it?” Marshal asked, and now he got excited.
“Do you think there is a chance that Agustin fell in love again and then he broke up again, and for that, he left Cambridge?” Aiko asked. Marshal looked at her eyes in disbelief. Was she serious? he thought, but then they were talking about Agustin. He shook his head and made a sad smile. Then he looked into Aiko’s eyes—they were wet from the earlier tears—and then said,
“Fuck.”
