The girls all chatted and danced to music until eight, then they filtered through the bathroom changing into their sleepwear and climbed the ladder to the loft. Pete had done his duty and ferried all the sleeping bags and beanbags up after the pizzas were done. The place looked like a hipster coffee house. Amazingly the adults had let Kelly join them, they had seen the film years ago and didn't feel any of the content was beyond Kelly's maturity.
Kelly herself was bouncing with excitement, never having been included in movie night before. Her mother had sternly warned her, "No talking through the movie!" Before sending her off to change.
They must have had a cubic meter of popcorn between them and what seemed like gallons of fizzy juice.
Kelly was the last up the ladder and she pulled it up and shut the hatch behind her. "So, truth or dare, spin the bottle or sexy pillow fights first?" She joked, only to be pelted with a half dozen pillows. All the girls laughed as she sat down.
Her sister got the DVD from Mey, the little Chinese girl was by far the quietest of the group and didn't even go to their school. She probably had originally been included only on the merit of being Heather's best friend. Her choice in movie certainly had surprised them.
The instant the DVD went on however, it became obvious she and Heather had watched it a million times, they knew the words, not just to the songs but the dialogue too. The 'what was that bang?' line being said in triplicate had them in stitches.
Anne had been worried the floor might give way during the rendition on time warp! The girls got really into it and she and Abby used the collapsing bit at the end to accidentally end up with Annes head in Abby's lap. They stayed that way for a few songs, no one noticing the intimacy in the excitement.
When the film ended the girls were all still hyped and wanted another film, it wasn't even ten so they found a film from her dad's collection, a silly old kids film which they all agreed on, time bandits.
Only Kelly and Anne had seen the movie and the rest of the girls loved it. It fit their old movie night theme perfectly. At the end of the movie they left the lights down low. "Right, two newcomers this month for the first time ever!" Anne began, "We all know the ropes but these two, actually no, Kelly knows. Jo might need an explanation." She held out a cloth bag, "each person writes down a movie. It has to be pre millenium, you have to own or be able to obtain it and it has to be a classic, otherwise no rules. We all put one in and the last person who's film we watched picks one out." She grabbed a pad and pen, " if you didn't write one down, have a think and grab the pad."
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"I still think it's rigged!" Susan called out, as she did every month. "How can I go two years putting in the same film and not have it picked!" She pouted.
"The bag knows, the bag picks!" Lisa said like it was a mantra.
"The bag knows!" The rest parroted. This had obviously been a running gag.
"Hey, the man who fell to earth is a classic!" She started then the other girls finished "it's got David Bowie in it!" They all laughed and put their movie choices into the bag.
Mey put her hand in the bag and fished out a piece of notepaper, "drumroll please!" The girls all drummed on the ground, probably annoying the hell out of the adults downstairs. "Oh my god! The Man Who Fell to Earth!" She held up the paper and showed it to everyone.
"Right, it's almost midnight. If we want to continue being allowed to do this, teeth and bed. Kelly, are you staying here tonight or in your own bed?" Anne asked, taking charge of her party.
"Here." Came the reply.
"Hey, Jo, how come you haven't nipped out for a cigarette tonight, I thought smokers all ducked out every five minutes for a puff?" Abby asked.
Jo, who was wearing a t-shirt and PJ bottoms, pulled her shirt up so far that the girls thought she was about to flash them, she had the most wonderfully defined abs. At the center of her sternum was a sticky nicotine patch. "Can't smoke at home anyway so I use these." There was a chorus of 'ahh's and nods. The girls all secretly wishing they had her sixpack.
They shuffled off to the bathroom to brush their teeth, Susan made sure to go at the same time as Jo and caught her as she entered the bathroom.
"Thanks." She said.
"What for?" Jo asked, knowing the answer already.
"You wrote my film down, the ink wasn't purple." She explained.
"Well, maybe. I do like the underdog." She smiled at Susan and turned to go into the bathroom.
Susan stopped her, "Jo, I was talking to Pete today and he suggested you might… prefer a different pronoun."
"Nah, not me, wouldn't catch me wanting no filthy phallus, I like being a girl, just don't like dressing as one." She moved to leave again and stopped. "Thanks for asking though."
"Hey!" Susan stopped her again, "Want to hang out a bit at school sometimes? Just me and you?"
Jo studied her face for a minute, then nodded and closed the bathroom door.
