Before the fifth attack, Zane began the upgrade for his mage class. He planned on going through his upgrade by the shelter, and he asked Sophie and Jason to watch over him during the upgrade. Sophie and Jason agreed without hesitation, but Sophie suggested that Zane go through his breakthrough in a training ground.
Naturally, Zane wanted to ignore Sophie’s suggestion, but he was forced to change his mind after she explained her reasoning. Based on the ongoing conflict happening inside and outside the starting village, it was very likely that Zane would be disturbed during his upgrade. Although Sophie and Jason would do their best to protect him, they weren’t confident in guaranteeing his safety if a large group arrived to cause trouble.
When Zane asked Sophie and Jason to watch over him, he only expected them to chase away a few people that approached him. Even if they had to fight, Zane didn’t think those battles would be very dangerous for them. Zane agreed to Sophie’s suggestion once he realized that he would be putting Jason’s and her life in danger. Plus, the upgrade for his mage class wasn’t as serious as the upgrade for his warrior class. Therefore, Zane wasn’t worried about undergoing his upgrade in the perfect environment.
Once Zane agreed to Sophie’s suggestion, he sensed energy surge from her. He was surprised to see she leveled up. His surprise further increased when she told him that he was the reason she gained a level.
Sophie said that she was awarded experience for giving advice to a younger sibling. She received experience points the moment Zane agreed to her suggestion. Sophie told Zane that she often earned experience when she interacted with him, Jason, Shane, Shawn, Luna, and Lana.
At first, Zane was intrigued when he heard about the unique ways that Sophie could gain experience. He knew about a few classes that would allow people to earn experience simply from interacting with others and Sophie was the first person he knew that had such a class. However, Zane’s curiosity gave way to annoyance as he recognized the expression on Sophie’s face. It was an expression that told Zane she was the big sister and he had to listen to what she said.
Usually, Zane would see this expression on Sophie’s face when they had disagreements at the orphanage. Now, Sophie wore that expression because the system agreed that Zane was one of her younger siblings. Zane didn’t know if she intentionally wore that expression, but he did know how it made him feel.
Zane didn’t hesitate to show his annoyance once he guessed Sophie’s thoughts. Although he showed his annoyance externally, internally Zane was happy that he could help Sophie grow on her path. Of course, Zane had no intention of telling her that.
Unwilling to endure Sophie’s expression Zane immediately turned and left. He decided to head toward the mage training ground to undergo his upgrade. Zane could have gone to warrior training ground, but he felt like it was more appropriate to upgrade his mage class in the mage training ground.
Once Zane made it to the mage training ground, he quickly obtained a private room and initiated his upgrade. After a brief period of darkness, Zane saw he returned to the unique space. He closed his eyes and took a moment to enjoy the mana flowing into his body.
With a smile on his face Zane opened his eyes and began selecting his knew class. Zane took a step forward and several versions of himself appeared. A version of himself as an elemental mage, magic warrior, sorcerer, and more. Zane ignored all of them and moved toward the magic weapon expert version of himself.
Class: Magic Weapon Expert
Description: An expert skilled in the usage of magic weapons. This class uses magic weapons to explore the secrets of magic. With greater mastery over magic weapons there is no magic that is too profound or complex.
Rewards: 25 CP, +3 Int, +2 Wis, +1 Per, +4 Will, and +2 free stat points per level
Zane took a few seconds to look at the magic weapon expert version of himself. It was wearing a robe decorated with magical symbols, holding a staff in its left hand, a book in its right and had a wand tucked into its waste. It leaned the staff against its body and raised its left hand toward Zane. Zane raised the same hand and felt energy flow into him.
Closing his eyes, Zane focused on the changes that were going on in his body. Specifically, the changes happening to his source. His source was still in a ball located by his sternum. The source emitted a white light and contained energy that looked like a thin mist. As energy flowed into Zane, he sensed the mist condense and become thicker. Once the energy stopped, Zane opened his eyes and looked at his improvements.

Zane was happy when he saw the increase to his source, source field and source stats. The upgrade didn’t immediately affect anything else. However, his happiness quickly vanished when he recalled his inability to master his aura.
Patience Zane told himself. I’m already doing very well. My skills are improving verry quickly, and I’ve obtained a ton of information about my current and future classes. I’m sure I’ll figure out how to use my aura before I reach level one hundred.
“Do you want to participate in the trial?”
“Of course.” Zane replied. “Do I get time to prepare?”
“Yes. You have one hour.”
Zane didn’t have any skills tied to the mage class he previously held so he didn’t receive any new skills from the system. Therefore, Zane immediately decided to learn some skills when he heard he had an hour to prepare. The skills he learned were expert magic staff mastery, expert magic wand mastery, and expert magic book mastery. He had fused the basic version of these three skills to learn the expert magic weapon mastery skill.

Zane nodded as he read through the skill and three sub skills. A sword and spear attacked differently, but they both increased physical damage. A staff and wand had different ways of influencing mana, but they both increased magic power. It was up to Zane to learn and master the differences between these weapons.
Once Zane finished learning the three sub skills, he turned his attention to learning tier one spells. Zane already learned more than twenty-five tier zero spells. After the twenty-five spells reached the max level, Zane was able to learn the magic codex skill.
Skill: Magic Codex

Tier: 0
Effect: Improves the effect of all tier zero spell by 1%. Decreases the cost of all tier zero spells by 1%. Once a day, select two tier zero spells that can be cast without cost.

Learning and reaching the max level for twenty-five tier zero spells was easy for Zane. Teacher Isabelle made sure to beat spell theory and magic knowledge into Zane. Even if Teacher Isabelle didn’t provide Zane any training in magic, he would still have an easy time learning the tier zero skill. Tier zero spells could be cast by saying the magic words for a spell, knowing the symbols needed for the spell or by visualizing the effects of the spell.
Visualizing the effect of a tier zero spell was easy. As long as Zane could visualize the effect of a spell, he could learn it. Once Zane learned a spell, the system would reveal the magic words, symbols and other details about the spell.
After taking a deep breath, Zane closed his eyes and began visualizing his first tier one spell. A mana barrier. The first thing Zane did was visualize the effect of a tier zero mana barrier. A transparent blue dome that was centered on his body at a distance of one meter. The barrier was capable of withstanding a certain amount of physical and magical damage based on Zane’s skill level.
Zane knew the words to summon the barrier and he could sense the magical symbols that were needed for his mana to be molded into the proper shape. Next, he needed to slowly change the current spell, so he could unlock and learn the stronger version. Zane began visualizing the changes he would make to his magic barrier.
First, Zane dumped mana into the spells and observed the changes that happened to it. The barrier became stronger but the symbols that held the barrier together weren’t. As a result, the spell collapsed. The second attempt, Zane continued to add mana, but he made sure he didn’t overload the symbols that were destroyed the first time. Zane was successful and none of the symbols were destroyed. However, mana was leaking from the barrier, and it was not stable enough to properly defend him.
The third attempt. The fourth attempt. The fifth attempt. Over and over, Zane slowly made changes to the barrier as he tried to bring the spell to the first tier. He added mana, observed the effects, made slight changes to the symbols for the spell, then took away mana. After Zane’s eleventh attempt, he was finally successful and learned the tier one mana barrier spell.
Skill: Magic Barrier
Level: 1, 0%
Tier: 1
Effect: Transforms mana into a defensive barrier. Small chance to reflect attacks when destroyed. Defense 500 - 1000
Cost: 250 mana
Zane smiled when he saw that his hard work paid off. The current defense of the barrier wasn’t much, but there would be a huge increase when the magic power was increased by his other skills. Zane spent a few more seconds admiring his first tier one spell before he shook his head and began visualizing his second spell. He had less than an hour left, and he planned to make the most of it.
