Chapter 88

(Nov 7)

“HEY! WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?!?!”

It was Mona, Brigg’s sister.

And she looked furious.

“Me and Anthony over there just had a duel, nothing worth troubling over.” Briggs replied without even looking at her.

“J-just a duel you say?! You do realize everyone in the city saw that beam of energy you shot into the fucking sky?! What the hell were you thinking!?!”

As she shouted that, I looked around and noticed that a bunch of people had gathered.

Most noticeably, most of the A rankers also showed up for some reason.

Alisha, Cornelia, William and a few other A rankers were present.

Why did so many A rankers suddenly arrive? Did Brigg’s magic cause them all to come gather here?

“Like I said, it’s just a duel. Anthony is strong, he was able to stop me so nothing would’ve happened. Just drop it.” Briggs once again said without looking at her.

“Yea, sure, it ended well this time, but what if you had gone full berserk?! The damage would’ve been astronomical! Think of the damn consequences for once Briggs!”

“But I didn’t. It was just a duel. There was no reason for me to go full berserk, therefore I didn’t. So drop it.” Briggs said once more, but much more coldly this time.

Mona flinched and turned away, almost as if she was frightened.

“It was a false alarm, but you can’t blame us for being cautious.” She muttered as she dismissed a group of about a few dozen soldiers, mostly C with a couple B ranked.

“And what, did you think that they were going to be able to stop me if I did go full berserk?”

Briggs said as he pointed at the soldiers.

Mona didn’t bother replying since she knows it’s true that a small group of soldiers wasn’t going to stand a chance against Briggs.

However, I was more curious about what this “full berserk” that Mona and Briggs were both mentioning.

Full berserk…

I was curious, so once the people who had gathered cleared out and Briggs was left alone, I approached him.

“What was all that about? Something about a full berserk? I’m assuming you didn’t go all out when fighting me.”

Suddenly, he turned over and stared at me intensely.

“No Anthony. I fought you seriously at my full strength.”

From his conversation with Mona, it was clear he wasn’t in his full berserker, so why was he denying it now?

“I’m not very good at explaining but basically, I have different stages of berserk. First is my non-berserk stage is where I fight using only my chakra. Next is my normal berserker stage, where I transform my chakra into curse miasma. It’s what you’ve seen of me so far. The more I take damage while in berserk, the more my curse miasma grows, the stronger I become and the more I lost my mind.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

However, there is a limit to how strong I become while in normal berserk. No matter how much damage I take, my curse miasma will not grow after a certain amount. Full berserk is what allows me to break through that limit. In this form, I could easily fight every single A ranker in the city at once and not lose.”

At first it sounded like Briggs was exaggerating this full berserk strength, but I do believe him when he says that he could do that.

I’ve seen what he can do, and that wasn’t even his strongest yet.

“You see, in normal berserk, no matter how much damage I receive, I will never fully lose my mind, there’s a limit like I said before. Even in our fight earlier, I wasn’t in control of my body, but I wasn’t fully unconscious either; I still have vague memories of the battle. That’s why I was able to regain consciousness when you healed me.

But in full berserk, I completely black out losing all consciousness and it becomes impossible for me to wake me up unless I run out of energy… or if I die. And since there’s no limit, I will keep getting stronger with the added damage. It’s so dangerous, that I had to completely stop using it. The last time I went full berserk was over a decade ago… and… stuff happened…”

Briggs voice started to trail off as he remembered something.

“I see… of course you wouldn’t want to go full berserk just for simple sparring match…”

Before starting my fight with him, I didn’t expect Briggs to fight me seriously in the first place since it was just supposed to be a friendly duel. Not to even mention the risk of using his strength.

“Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t go full berserk even if I wanted to. The only way for me to break the barrier between normal and full berserk is if I’m truly in a rage. I must hate my opponent so much and be so angry that I am willing to put everything around me at risk just to kill my opponent. And of course, I don’t hate you. So even if I wanted to go full berserk, I couldn’t.”

If what Briggs is saying is true, then why did he go full berserk in the past?

What happened in the past that made Briggs completely snap, allowing himself to go full berserk?

Briggs never seemed like a hateful guy, he looked friendly to everyone, I can’t imagine him being so angry or hating someone so much.

I didn’t want to pry to much into Brigg’s past, but who wouldn’t be curious?

“Feel free not to answer, but what caused you to go full berserk in the past…?”

Briggs stayed silent for a moment.

“Sorry Anthony, I don’t want to talk about it.”

Briggs tended to be very open guy, so I was a bit surprised, but everyone has personal things they don’t want to share.

I respected that and stopped asking questions.

Before he left though, Briggs said one more thing.

“Anthony, I truly respect you. In only a mere year, you went from some dude to a man who could fight me head on. You may think you only became strong because of your dragon powers, which may be partially true, but I disagree. I think you had potential from the very beginning; you just never had the motivation. And your dragon blood is what gave you your boost. Who knows? Maybe someday you’ll be able to stop me when I go full berserk.”

Briggs grinned once again, and then waved as he left to talk with the A rankers and other people who had gathered.

Since everyone was distracted with talking to Briggs and settling things, I just silently went home.

(Nov 8)

When I got home from work today, there was B.I.R.B mail delivery pigeon outside of my house.

The delivery pigeon gave me a letter from its backpack, and then swiftly flew away.

I wasn’t expecting any letters, usually my wife sends letters to me when I worked afar, but she was now living with me. Who could it be? Father? He doesn’t know where I live though.

As I opened it, the first thing that I noticed was the name: “Mona.”

It was a letter from Mona.

-

Hello Anthony, this is Mona. I have things I need to discuss with you involving recent events. Please meet me tomorrow at the blacksmith forge on Chungus street somewhere from 10AM to 11AM.

P.S bring your sword (the one I made for you)

-

It was… a very short letter. Not even half a page.

Why even bother sending me a letter?

It was a waste of money to use the B.I.R.B delivery service when I literally saw her yesterday.

Also, why did she want me to bring the wyvern sword? Did she want to duel me as well? I don’t even know.

Well, I’m not sure what she wants, but I guess I’m going to meet up with her tomorrow.
