Chapter 41

(Sep 16)

By late afternoon, we started our trip back to the city along with Gabi, my wife and Mona (along with the tied-up assassins in tow).

We had already finished interrogating and questioning the assassins when they woke up before we started our trip back.

The assassins were quite stubborn, and they refused to answer any of our questions, and one of them even tried to kill themselves to avoid spilling any information.

But that was easily stopped because Sven read their minds and stopped that beforehand.

Interrogating them was quite easy.

A lot of people have misconceptions about how interrogation, investigation and questioning processes work. Most normal people think that assassins and spies are tortured for information but that is completely wrong.

Torture and threats are basically useless and are extremely ineffective when trying to obtain accurate information. I mean, why torture when magic exists?

Take Sven for example, Sven can use mind reading abilities and can steal information directly from the victim’s mind.

Of course, it isn’t perfect because a skilled person would be able to think useless thoughts to block out their true thoughts, but neither is torture. Even if you tortured someone or threatened a person, that person could possibly lie and you would have almost no way of confirming it.

Magic and other manipulative abilities/ skills are so much more reliable and there is literally no situation where torture is used.

We questioned the assassins and while they didn’t answer us, we were still able to extract information from them by asking them specific questions to make them think a certain answer in their head and via Sven’s mind reading abilities, he read their mind.

And it seems my predictions were right.

They were sent from a kingdom called “Kenava” where mainly Fairies live and that was the same kingdom that Briggs had told me about.

This Kenava kingdom was developing Bio-Dragonical weapons as a trump card against us and they were indeed the ones who released the wyvern and these assassins to spy on us.

Even if it’s just that, everything I’ve done so far was worth the effort just to confirm this. Of course, they may possess more information, so we tied them up to bring them with us to the city.

Sven decided to stay behind because he had some personal business to take care of, but he did promise that he would come to the city and help out.

“I got stuff to take care of, go on ahead. I’ll meet up with you another time in the city, you better not die, you hear me? If you die, I’ll bring you back to life and bury you again.”

Like that, we parted ways.

We traveled a bit and it’s currently night and Gabi had already fallen asleep as Mona, my wife and I ate a late dinner cooked on a small campfire.

It was very awkward as we ate in silence, my wife and I on one side and Mona just sitting there on the other side.

In an awkward attempt at starting a conversion, I asked Mona a question.

“So um… we met once before, and I was just curious and… I was wondering, what’s up with you and Briggs…?”

It was a question I had wanted to ask her since I found out that she came to help me and I thought this was a good time to ask.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

“You seem to have some beef with Briggs, of course you don’t have to answer if it’s personal but… I would like to know.”

Mona stayed silent for a second before she finally answered.

“Briggs is my brother.”

Eh?

Brother?

Mona… Briggs…. Brother? They’re siblings???

Oh wow. I did not expect that.

I hung out with Briggs a lot, and not once did Briggs mention it and I had never even seen Mona that much before.

“Oh, I get it now!” I said cheerfully.

Mona looked at me confused but I continued on anyways.

“I grew up as a single child myself but throughout my entire life, I have met a lot of siblings. And no matter how well two siblings get along, there will be situations where they will argue and have a healthy disagreement.”

Yes, this was my conclusion. Mona and Briggs are on bad terms with each other because of a sibling argument or disagreement!

“Hm. I guess that would be a logical conclusion to come up with. You are right to a certain extent… anyways, I think that should have fulfilled your curiosity. I’m going to head to bed now, we need to wake up early tomorrow.”

Mona stood up and returned to her own tent, leaving me and my wife alone to finish dinner.

Man, I wonder what it’s like having a sister or brother. I hope Mona and Briggs make up soon, because now is not a good time to be having a fight when a war is about to break out.

Home sweet home!

We finally made it to the city and Mona went directly to go find William and drop off the two captured assassins while I went back to my apartment with my wife and Gabi.

I dropped off all the clothing and stuff we brought along with us at my apartment and headed back out.

I plan on buying a proper house now since my family is with me instead of just a simple apartment.

“Wow, the city is much bigger… and busier. This might take a while for me to get used to.”

My wife had never come to this city and so she followed me around as I gave her a short tour of the city (I avoided the parts of the city that were destroyed by the wyvern).

I left Gabi back at my apartment to sleep because I didn’t want to wake her up so it was just me and my wife together.

We had fun, we ate some food and desert and we just walked around and went shopping.

As we were doing this, we bumped into Briggs who just happened to walk by.

“Anthony! You should have let me know that you came back! Oh…? Who’s this? Is this your wife whom you have always bragged to me about? Oh wait, I should introduce myself first. My name is Briggs, I’m your husband’s friend!”

Since this was Brigg’s first time meeting my wife, my wife introduced herself after Briggs did.

“Hello! I am Anthony’s wife as you know, my name is Urknzatskuvlaptaxzi. Thank you for taking care of my husband.”

“Eh?”

Er…

Yea…

For a long time now in my journal, I have always called her my wife but I never referred to her by her name…

That was intentional and reason is that her name is really long and confusing… my wife comes from a small tribe of devils far from here and in her tribe, the names are super long like that.

Don’t get me wrong, I have tried to memorize her name but it feels very weird saying Urknzats-whatever every time and to be honest, I don’t even know if I spell that correctly. I’m pretty sure her real name is even longer.

My wife was understanding and even she has a hard time remembering her own name sometimes, so she let it slide and told me to just call her anything I wanted.

“Oh, nice to meet you Urken…zatsu…. Uhhh… kuva…”

“Just call me Anthony’s wife. Don’t feel bad about not remembering my name, I myself, forget it sometimes too. I just don’t feel like changing it because I grew up with it.”

“Okay… well, Anthony talks about you a lot! How long have you guys been together?”

“How long? I think a little less than 20 years.”

That brings back so many memories! When my wife and I first met, I was 19 and she was 21.

She was quite awkward and when I first saw her, I was instantly attracted to her. Well, more specifically I was attracted to her two giant melons… but hey! I was still a young man; it was natural for me to be attract by such things.

I met her in the city (the city that was destroyed by the dragon in the beginning of my journal), I was applying to become a soldier while she was new to the country.

My wife’s father was a human while her mother was a devil making my wife a demon. She inherited her father’s chakra and that made her different from all the other devils in her tribe and she felt isolated which made her leave it to find other people like her.

She ended up in the city, where she met me, and we slowly fell in love.

That’s a story of the past though, and there are too many embarrassing things I’ve done in the past that I do not want to remember.

We chatted for a bit before my wife said she wanted to continue shopping and left Briggs and I to continue talking.

“I forgot to mention but I met Mona. Why’d you never tell me she was your sister?”

“Mona…”

Briggs let out a sigh before he guided me to sit at a bench with him before he continued speaking.

“What’d she tell you?”

“Not much, just that you guys were siblings.”

“I see… Well, I’m not sure if you know this yet, but you do know that I’m the king’s son, and Mona and I are fighting for the throne to become the next ruler, right?”

Wait what?
