17. Project management.

The morning run had quickly become and integral part of the Endeavour start of day routine. Myles had thought it would be more difficult, but he supposed with the suit running bodily repairs behind the scenes he would see the benefits faster than a normal human. Maybe this was the big cheat power he had been hoping for, the ability to eat anything he liked and safely burn it off in a matter of hours if he chose.

Pounding asphalt had done little to clear Myles’ head. Sweetbright taking an interest in Arkwright & Fletcher right around the time he got his Trigger could be chalked up to coincidence. A Sweetbright van staking out his house was one coincidence too many. As had been happening more lately he was denied proper time to prepare. He was due to start his job as project liaison in a couple of hours. Maybe he could arrange to have Charlie sent to his mothers for a few weeks just in case. He also idly wonders if he could’ve his armour make some kind of tool set. Some screwdrivers, hammers, chisels and saws that he could pull out of thin air would be very handy in a deep dark dungeon. How would he even set that up? just think about tools really hard or maybe do a lot of DIY in the suit. Myles pictured himself sawing a piece of timber in full bunny armour… That might actually make fixing things up a lot easier. Myles decided he would pick up supplies on the way home and get some jobs he had been putting off done. It would make for a good experiment and even if nothing came of it he would have a few jobs around the house done and dusted. Myles reasoned that if they had wanted him dead, or at least ‘dead now’ then there were plenty of times staggering home tired that would have made for better opportunities to nix his mortal existence. Any and all of those plans would take time, he had to be on site in an hour.

“Your job is to fix and or resolve problems. When one of our staff needs something be it tools, jobs or god forbid, interpersonal issues, they will come to you, same for your staff.” Instructed Sandra Bright in an abrupt tone.

Myles had no idea what the joint project was. He had thought they had just been daft to offer him stupid amounts of money and he would take it and run. But with recent revelations taken into context, he considered if this was how fish felt in that final moment of introspection regarding the free food that been dangled in front of them.

“Understood, I look forward t working with you all.” He said in the tone of voice he considered business neutral. If this was some kind of trap he would learn everything he could about the location and the people. But first he was going to find where they had laid on breakfast and take as many fancy jams from these people as his pockets would manage.

Sandra Bright had taken note of Myles proclivities on that first meeting. Thus she has set up a large breakfast buffet and for the adornment of toasted bread she had laid out honey, peanut butter and marmite. An empty basket where the fancy jams should have been stood visible and alone. The man would be dead by the end of the week. Such pettiness had been unnecessary. But it had made her feel good and that was what mattered. She allowed herself a smirk as she watched Myles Endeavour eat a dry croissant and drink his coffee. Tomorrow she would make sure the milk had run out before he arrived.

Myles Endeavour was full of hate. This couldn’t possibly be a calculated move. But it irked him nonetheless. He swore that before this job, trap or whatever shenanigans was going on was over, he would have all of their fancy jams. In the meantime he planned to look as busy as possible while getting approximately shit-all done while he tried to look for clues as to what exactly was going on.

Stalking the halls and doing his best to look occupied Myles was committing the layout to memory. Walking places also made the other workers think he was busy and or getting stuff done. it came with an added bonus of making him harder to find when an issue arose. He had even found himself a clipboard and a reflective safety vest to really sell the act. Ironically Myles had in fact managed to solve several of the problems brought to him. One instance was a bit of conflict resolution between the Sweetbright and Arkwright & Fletcher staff. The others were various logistics matters that Myles had been able to solve because he had made it his business to know where everything was. Just shy of lunchtime of the first day, he still had no idea where they were keeping the breakfast supplies. Myles saw some workers flag him down.

“Mr. Endeavour, we were having some trouble getting the lifts working, Bob here thinks we need to wrench the blinker flange tighter and I think the muff bearings need oiling?” Said the taller of the two Sweetbright employeees.

With one hundred percent certainty Myles thought those were made up terms. But he was no stranger to workplace hazing and decided to play along.

“Just wrench the blinker flange but torque the piston grommets and the horse turbines. That should do it.” replied Myles Endeavour.

The two workers looked puzzled, shrugging at each other as Myles walked off looking for more work to avoid and possibly some jam. there had been a cordoned off area he had a good feeling about. It had been all but inaccessible before, but he had a clipboard now.

As the borrowed Arkwright & Fletcher made the round on the site the management office was busy brainstorming and plotting. It had been decided that Endevour would be the easy mark to get on site. His supposed mentor would be the more difficult task.

“The trick now will be getting Barrington here at the same time” said a mousy looking assistant. “We considered his daughter, but adding more Trigger uses to the mix especially with rumours sightings of a second new Trigger user… While potentially increasing the yield, over egging the pudding at this point would put the overall operation at risk of failure, we know we can handle two comfortably, lets leave three and four off the table for now.”

“I agree, I suggest we give him reason to investigate the facility on the night we need him here.” Said Sandra Bright. “But nothing to indicate what we are actually doing, if this goes wrong I don’t need him or the new guy knowing anything they can use against us.”

It had been a long time since they had been able to use a genuine Trigger as bait, let alone two. They mostly had to make do with the scraps. Valuable scraps but scraps nonetheless. Nothing quite matched the Triggers ability to draw in fae. It would have been ideal if they could have quietly run the gates with Endeavour upstairs none the wiser. But his kinds ability would flare up and the charade would be over before they could take full advantage. They could open gates at anytime, but some times and places were better than others. This was a prime site, but even that was at the mercy of the ebbs and flows of the other side. The next maximum synchronisation event would be on Friday.

Sandra Bright also made a note to increase external security. She had a petty side, but that was dwarfed by even the lowest fae. The freshly rebuked whistlers could not be counted on to simply stay away. The attitude of the fae would change, it would be forced to change once the Luminary brought his grand plan to fruition. It may be worth the risk to use some Fairy Triggers as bait, but no one from the community could know what thy were doing. Such a united force standing against them may prove even too much for Sweetbrights vast resources. Maybe the whistlers could be used to this end, should Endeavour survive he would be easy pickings and offering him up as originally intended would make Sweetbright look somewhat honorable, if not to the whistlers but to the fae in general.

As she was finalising her plans to doom Myles Endeavour and John Barrington in her head she noticed a member of her security team trying to get her attention.

“What can I do for you Gerald?” said Sandra Bright, who knew the value of the carrot as much as the stick.

“Ms. Bright, The mark seems to have found the pantry and is stealing all of the jam.” Said the nervous security guard.

“Shit, forget what I said about canceling the milk at tomorrow’s breakfast, make it UHT all round.” said a narked-off Sandra Bright.
