Chapter 069 The last challenge (1)

Chapter 069 The last challenge (1)

To avoid deaths, Sandra gave the order to our tanks form three defensive lines as we walked toward the tower. One line was in front of us, and the others were on the right side and left side. I was in the middle of the survivors and on top of the truck, and so was Rose and Claire. We had to offer quick support. We didn’t have to worry about our backs, because Silver and Stella were there occasionally smashing skeletons and eating mutant lizards. But since we were only five hundred meters away from the tower, we didn’t face any major problems.

When Sandra and the others approached that dark altar, all the survivors got instantly teleported to inside the tower. Some people screamed; some people began to tremble. Talking wouldn't help in that situation, so we just acted. We were in front of that jungle, and dozens of monsters started to appear, but we killed them all. I really had an easy time against those monsters, they charged forward without thinking, and I didn’t have to aim at them. Just by looking at one direction and thinking about one kind of magic arrow and then that same arrow would appear out of thin air and kill a few of them easily. Even my weakest magic arrows were more than enough to kill four or five of those monsters since I trained and the magic arrows got more efficient.

The fighters did their job correctly without any problems, thanks to it, the other survivors calmed down. It seemed that place was the real interior of the tower, the jungle was exactly like I remembered, and the staircase was still there. It would be a little troublesome to make almost one thousand survivors climb since only five could walk side by side in that staircase. Fighting would also be an issue, but I already knew how the birds tend to attack. Besides, we didn’t have to wait for their attacks. The survivors of the third group, Rose Claire and I exploded their nests before they could try anything. The birds who survived our attacks didn’t pose a threat to us. So, again, we didn’t suffer any losses.

When we reached the arena, Sandra gave us the order to stop and rest. Until that moment, we didn’t hear that voice talking about the fourth challenge, and we were almost at the top of the tower. That was our last chance to rest.

The survivors began to clean their weapons and drink potions to recover their MP and STA. Meanwhile, I decided to meditate and create magic arrows. It had become a habit, and it was as natural as breathing to me.

“I’m getting nervous,” Harry said. “I wonder what will happen after this challenge…”

“You should be nervous,” Rose retorted” After all, you spent thousands of coins in an almost useless skill. You could have upgraded your shield instead of learning a skill which you considered to be cool.”

Harry had a long green sword in his hands and four identical tower shields on his back. It seemed that he decided to use his copies to defense; in any case, it also seemed that he liked electric swords. I wasn’t really interested in what their new weapons could do, but I wouldn’t lose anything just by knowing. Rose, now had four thick glaives and three shields like ones Harry had. Sarah and Sabrina still had their whips, but they also emitted a light blue glow. They probably added some effect in their weapons to slow down the monsters.

Lucius still had his nunchaku, but his weapon also had spikes and emitted a red glow. Earlier I also saw his nunchaku exploding when it hit the monsters. Sandra and Charles now also had shields, Sandra was the type who focused on defense and stopping a massive number of monsters with her shout, so it was only obvious. But Charles created a shield because he always became defenseless after using the effect of his spear.

Claire now had a long metal crossbow, and it was hard to imagine the necessary amount of strength to carry, much less use that thing. That bow exponentially increased the attack power, but if that wasn’t enough, her arrows also could multiply before hitting the targets.

“What are you looking at?” Claire asked, displeased.

“I’m looking at an angry woman.”

Claire snorted, and then she focused her attention on the kids. The kids also upgraded their toys, but they also were wearing protective equipment. They bought backpacks like mine, and they filled it with potions. It surprised me they didn’t create some monsters to fight with them, it was probably because we didn’t have all that much space in the hotel. The fact Silver was always covered in blood and guts probably was an important factor as well.

After one hour, Sandra decided to give a speech, but ignored her and continued to create my magic arrows while she was saying some serious words mixed with cheesy lines.

“Let’s fight and survive,” Sandra said. “This world belongs to us.”

The survivors were tense, so they only nodded. If this were a movie, they would raise their weapons and scream excitedly. But those people weren’t trained warriors; they were civilians. So, the only thing they could was to hold the nerves and prepare to fight with their lives on the line.

After confirming all the survivors were ready, Sandra touched the door, and then all of us heard it.

“Welcome to the last challenge, defeat the monster and all the survivors alive will return home.”

Return home… it almost seemed like we weren’t in our city. In any case, we didn’t have time to think about those words. As soon as the voice disappeared, all of us got teleported again, and we appeared at the top of the tower. The air was heavy, and dense clouds were very close to us; those were massive enough to cover the entire top of the tower. In fact, we appeared right in the middle of one those clouds, but when the cloud disappeared, we saw it.

When I saw the massive forty meters long black lizard, I understood one thing, many, many of us would die. All the creature’s body was covered in sharp black scales. That creature wasn’t something teamwork would defeat, to defeat it, we would have to do everything in our power. But Sandra and the others insisted on keeping their formation they previously had decided. Even after I told them the status and skills the dragon had.

“Non-fighters, fall back!” Sandra shouted. “Group one, enter tortoise formation! Group two stay behind group one and use your support skills on them. Group three attack the monster while it’s not flying! Group four, wait until the monster began to fly, only after that began to shot!”

I gave the order to Silver to run around and attack the dragon from behind whenever possible, after that, I climbed on Stella’s back, and she began to fly. Meanwhile, the special team entered in formation, the same formation we used against the rat which had the dark orb. I sighed, maybe teamwork would work if they had shields with some magic resistance, but that wasn’t something they could afford to buy.

“Well… it will be better if I do my own thing.”

The dragon slowly began to walk toward the survivors, the creature was too massive, and its limbs were short. So, it was only obvious the thing was slow. But the dragon had enormous wings and also had the skill fly, in the skies the dragon would be unstoppable. The beast ignored Stella and me who flying, and because of it, the dragon got directly by the thunderstorm. For ten seconds, several bolts of lightning hit the monster, but the beast didn’t stop.

Stella had spent one hundred points of MP to cause a little more of one hundred points of damage; the magic resistance skill was really troublesome. But that didn’t faze me; it caused damage, so, the dragon wasn’t totally immune to magic.

“Continue attacking from a safe distance, if you see that monster opening its mouth toward you, just retreat. When you run out of MP, I will return.”

After saying that, I patted Stella’s head and she nodded. And soon I jumped from her back toward the dragon, even though the creature ignored the attacks, once I was fifty meters away from it in midair, the dragon looked at me and opened its mouth. A massive wave of flames flew toward me, but it hit nothing, I teleported, and then I reappeared on the dragon’s nape.

“Let’s see if you can attack me here.”

In fact, I was hoping the dragon could attack; his arms were long enough to reach its nape. And if he could damage his own body, I couldn’t ask for more. In a sequence, I made ten ice arrows hit a single point on the dragon’s nape. But I only saw a small dent in a scale where should have been a deep wound. The steel bolts bounced off.

Dragon – HP: 499685 MP: 495000 STA: 499850

‘An attack on a single point is better than an area of effect attack, obviously.’

Still, that wasn’t nearly enough, I spend almost forty days creating magic arrows, but I alone wouldn’t be able to kill that thing with those arrows.

Even though I was attacking its nape, the dragon ignored me and then, opened its mouth toward the group one. They raised their shields, but a single attack incinerated dozens of them, I expected nothing less from an attack which consumed five thousand points of MP. However, even after dozens of his comrades being burned alive and others were running with flames on their bodies, the other survivors of the group one didn’t retreat. Thanks to it, the survivors in the group three began to attack.

Stella was attacking the monster’s tail, and Silver was trying to bite the dragon’s legs whenever possible, so I wasn’t worried about them hitting me. But the rain of magic created by the survivors worried me; they weren’t aiming, they didn’t have time to do it. Besides, they couldn’t see me.

‘It can’t be helped…’

Without much choice, I stopped my non-stop attacks and slowed down my pace to evade a few magic projectiles. Those magic were enough to cause small explosions, but the scales were absorbing most of the magic effects. While I was dodging those projectiles, I saw an arrow becoming three and hitting the dragon’s cheek and a few glaives trying to hit the dragon’s eyes. But that only made the dragon’s angry; the creature opened its mouth again.

“Try next time.”

I sent five one-meter long dark arrows toward the dragon’s face and thanks to it, the monster’s mouth closed and I felt an explosion inside of him. Everyone was already trembling and waiting for the dragon’s breath, but became speechless when they saw the dizzy dragon breathing smoke through its nose.

Dragon – HP: 494261 MP: 495000 STA: 499850

“I see… so, only your scales can absorb magic. That’s good to know.”

The other survivors noticed that too, so they prepared themselves to counter-attack when the dragon opens its mouth. But I didn’t have to wait for that, through the dragon’s teeth, I could see the interior of its mouth. Besides, its mouth was big enough; a few persons could enter there and attack freely. It was dangerous, but the dragon couldn't control its body thanks to the dark arrows. Then I decided to teleport the best attacker with me to the beast’s mouth. I jumped from the monster’s nape, and when I saw Claire and Rose, I teleported toward them.

“Come with me for a second.”

“What?” Claire asked surprise.

“To where-“

Before Rose could finish her sentence, I touched their shoulders and teleported to inside the dragon’s mouth. Then I sent one-meter long fire arrows down its throat without stopping for a second.

“What are you waiting for? Attack!”

Claire and Rose woke up from their shock and began to attack the dragon’s throat, blood began to gush on us, and the monster’s body trembled when the fire arrows exploded. Finally, the dark arrows’ effect disappeared, and then the dragon could move its head again. The beast tried to smash us with its tongue, but I teleported back to where Harry and the others were.

Sandra and the others became speechless when they saw us appear covered in blood. But since those two looked more annoyed than in pain, they decided to overlook my actions.

Dragon – HP: 471261 MP: 490000 STA: 498750

“How did it go?” Sandra asked.

“The dragon lost four percent of its HP; we caused more damage than I had expected.”

“How many times can you use those dark arrows?” Sandra asked.

“Five times.”

“I see,” Sandra said thoughtfully. “Then I will trust in your judgment, repeat this attack when you see fit. Sorry, but you two will have to endure this.”

“… Ok.” Claire said.

“Understood.” Rose nodded.

That was the best we could do for now, but I didn’t have to wait for them. I knew I could enter the dragon’s mouth, cause damage and leave before getting hurt, as long as I have MP, of course. And so I did it.
