Chapter 11: Training and affinities

“So, let’s start with the basics, shall we? First you need to be able to identify any metal and name all of its properties, then we’ll move on to smelting and refining ores.”

Ilmarinen and Phoenix were standing next to his pile of metals, his forge glowing dimly in the background.

“This here is common iron, abundant in mortal worlds, …”

Phoenix walked into Achelois sanctuary, finding the goddess fiddling with a dull orb.

“Ah, Phoenix… One moment I’m almost done here…”

A moment later the orb shot into the air, glowing ever so slightly.

“There all done. This is an affinity orb, used to see which affinities a being has. In your case we’ll be using it to identify your strongest affinities, so we know where to start your practical training. So, if you’ll put your hands like you did with your guns and then channel…”

The orb went dark, then little lights started appearing, each one a brilliant silver creating lots of little constellations, each one glowing with a different intensity, before the entire thing suddenly expanded around them. Achelois smiled, before starting to explain what the entire thing meant.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“So, the orbs main manifestation is a representation of your strongest affinities, in your case stellar and balance, the stellar affinity on its own is already extremely powerful as it combines the concepts of time, space, luna, sol, and gravity together. Combined with the balance affinity prized for being able to manipulate and nullify any external energy even void, it’s honestly rather absurd and that isn’t even looking at your secondary and tertiary affinities, which in your case increase your potential by huge amounts. For your secondaries you have wind, lunar, time, metal, shadow and storm affinities. Your tertiaries are space, void, lightning and water. Your tertiary affinities are about the same strength as a demigod’s primary affinity, your secondaries are comparable to an elder gods primary affinities, while your primary affinities should be around the same strength as any of the Primordials primaries.”

“W-what!? B-but how!?”

“Weeell… you are the daughter of Balance, so… yah. She actually had all six of the original affinities before she fused them together, creating the balance affinity. Anyway, for the upcoming tournament we’ll be working on your fighting style and incorporating your powers into your it, specifically your primaries, lunar, time and shadow under my tutoring, while Il will be helping you with your metal, storm and space affinities. Shall we…?”

Phoenix and Achelois were sitting next to the lake, a small picnic spread out before them.

“Now in order to start incorporating affinities into your fighting style, you need to be able to reliably draw on them. As such we’ll start by organizing them, creating a library of sorts. First pull on the affinity you feel the strongest connection to…”

“Alright, and what is this?”

“Lunite ore, heavily infused with lunar energy, once refined it becomes highly conductive and springy, making it ideal to alloy with other metals when making magical weapons and artifacts, specifically swords and other bladed objects as it holds and edge extremely well.”

“Very good, dear. So smelting, for this we’ll also be using your affinities so start circulating your energy…”
