Dear Brother

Dear Brother

~January 9th, night~

[Hey! You guys heard the news?]

[Huh? What is it?]

[You know about Lord Conleth's little brother? During last night]

[Oh yeah. Poor guy!]

[That's not just it. I heard that General Aelius kicked Lord Jet out of the Military Complex]

[WHAT?!]

The conversation Conleth overheard in the toilet kept playing again and again. An endless loop of psycological torture. Even the breathtaking view of the dark sea reflecting the starry sky could no longer calm him down as usually before.

Usually, there's nothing Conleth like more than spending his days patrolling among the islands of Devilspine Archipelago. The warm tropical weather, the calming sound of the ocean crashing against the ship, and the constant exercise of beating up those Furvur demons.

Tonight, for the first time, Conleth did not feel like continuing his mission. In fact, if not for this ingrained sense of military responsibility, he would have steered the ship back North and hugged Jet already.

“Hey, here you are!” Suddenly, the elegant voice of a young lady spoke from behind him.

Conleth did not turn around. “What do you want?” He spoke through his gritted teeth.

Crease formed on Fiamma’s forehead. “What's wrong, dear brother?”

Conleth, still not turning around, scoffed at his eldest sister. “Heh, so you do think about family?”

“The fuck is that suppose to mean?!” Fiamma took a moment to calm herself, then went and stood beside Conleth. “What's wrong, Con?”

Two pair of eyes met. “Do you know? About Jet?”

Fiamma tried her best to stay calm. Yet, the aggressive tone and the sudden question shook her. So shocked by it, that she could not muster a reply.

Conleth immediately noticed the truth in her eyes. “How could you? Jet is our brother. And we left him alone…”

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Fiamma kept quiet. Giving room for Conleth to vent his frustration. She also thought that, perhaps, if Conleth yelled at her, it would ease the guilt of keeping things from Conleth these past two weeks.

Alas, Conleth was so enraged that he said nothing further. The air immediately turned deafeningly silent. Even the sound of the water hitting the ship felt like mocking her.

Fiamma strengthened her resolve. Now that things are in the open, she should explain everything clearly. Otherwise, Conleth might have blamed their parents without understanding why.

“I understand your anger dear brother, and there's no excuse for keeping this from you. All I ask, is that you would listen as to the reason why mother and father do what they did. Is that agreeable to you?”

Silence once again disrupted the atmosphere. Awkward silence. Thankfully, it did not last long. Conleth nodded hesitantly, which ease the guilt in Fiamma's heart a bit.

Fiamma collected herself, before beginning her story. “You know Con, as children of the General and the Ice Princess, a lot is expected of us Brandrs. You know that, right? All those training we did? While others started when they turned twelve or older, we began since we learn how to walk.”

That sentence took Conleth back to his early memories. Bitter smiles began to form on his face as he slowly nodded. “I have no complaints about that. I am thankful to father and mother in fact.”

“As do I.” Fiamma quickly agreed. “I mean look at us. I'm nineteen, and you're seventeen. We're not even twenty, yet we are stronger than the average soldiers. Doesn't that, consequently, prove how adequate father and mother are at teaching us?”

“Okay…but what's all that has got to do with Jet?”

Fiamma placed her right hand on Conleth's back. “When father and mother discovered that Jet can never form any energy core inside his body, for the first time in a long time, they are clueless as to what they should be doing.”

Conleth's eyes open widely in shock. “What? The General did not know what to do?”

“Yes, dear brother. I am surprised as well. Father and mother, both of them are…well, they're meatheads essentially. Too good in fighting and wars, yet too naive for everything else.”

Conleth let out a chuckle. “Yeah, you're right about that. Even I was infected by that blunt naivete.”

“Hehehe, you and me both, brother.” Fiamma then turned back to serious. “So, upon learning that Jet cannot be a soldier, they are royally stumped as to what to do. They can't just send Jet to the other three main duchy. A lot of eyes are watching. Jet could be kidnapped. Or worse.”

Glint of fury twinkle in Conleth's eyes. He realized the seriousness of the situation. Duke Aelius of Cherith, the Great General, is a position well sought by anybody. In fact, there's been attempts by aristocrats from cities surrounding Vitalux Royal Capital to replace Aelius as the leader of the army. And, knowing the General, he would have willingly let go of his position to save his family. Only his love for Ottilia kept him to his position.

Fiamma continued.

“Plus, and more importantly, they did not know what to do with Jet. I mean, you and me, we're both fighters. We're both soldiers. But even he knew that Jet was not a soldier. In fact, Jet just kept up with training so that he could follow us. So that he could make father and mother proud as well.”

Fiamma rubbed beads of tears forming at the corner of her eyes. “Suddenly, they had to face reality. Jet does not have an energy core. Before, even if Jet is not as talented as a soldier, he is still a decent fighter. And his hardwork and constant training is well worth the result.”

“But now, without an energy core, no amount of training can kill a Furvur beast. Let alone those demons. And thus, father and mother made a decision.”

Conleth did not interrupt. Fiamma meanwhile, had a proud look on her face. “You know, father and mother, they actually kneeled in front of Jet. They apologized for only training him in fighting. They asked for Jet to move to Ember Hill, under the protection of those Helldoor maniacs. Where they knew he would be safe.”

Conleth's face showed an expression of realization. He finally understood why Duke Aelius and Duchess Loina made that decision. And he was actually amazed. Not a lot of parents could admit directly to their son's face about their mistake.

“Still…is it right? I mean, he's only thirteen. What path can he take on his own?”

Fiamma chuckled hearing that. “Hehehe, you sure inherit father and mother naivete. Jet won't be alone. The Helldoor’s commander is there. Sam and Brenda are there. And more importantly, as soon as this mission is over, we'll be there with him as well.”

Conleth turned determined. “You're right! Let's go and find that Furvur bastard and finished this mission quickly.”

“Hehehe, of course. That's why I'm looking for you. Who ask you to miss the strategy meeting?”

“You mean…”

“That's right. We found them. They are trapped in Occasus Island.”

“Hahahaha. Great! That's great!”

Conleth smashed his fist on the ship's railing. Imagining killing the Furvur demons they've been chasing.

Finally, the mission will be over.

Finally, he can go home and see his brother.
