I could hear Midari, Mily and Saki talk. They thought they were being sneaky, because they probably assumed that no one could hear them through the kitchen door.

,,Well what are we going to do? Luna still thinks she can just fight Eli…”

,,Eli..?” I assumed it was Mily’s voice.

,,Elizabeth or whatever” Midari scoffed and Mily let out a sigh.

,,What if…” Saki was talking this time ,,What if we actually do just that?”

,,ARE YOU NUTS?!” Midari yelled ,,BOY, YOU FIGHT HER YOURSELF IF YOU’RE SO CONFIDENT! I JUST FOUND OUT SHE ACTUALLY EXISTS AND I’M REALLY SCARED OF HER!”

,,I think…Saki meant something else…”

,,Midari shut up for 5 minutes, will you? Allow me to present my plan: First, we challenge Elizabeth to a duel. Then, she’ll come to fight and she’ll bring the other two librarians with her, forcing her to bring Edgar as well…”

,,Do continue with this genius plan of yours…”

,,Then, we fight her. As in all of us. After that…someone distracts her and someone else will steal Edgar while they aren’t looking.”

,,This is stupid and basic. I like it.”

I sighed and decided I had heard enough of their conversation.

A few days prior the current events I had decided that I would fight Elizabeth in order to get Edgar, my companion, back. Mily disagreed with my idea, as always and then Millie started crying. I don’t even clearly remember the events myself, everything happened quickly.

Just then, the door opened and Midari stared at me.

,,Are you going to just site outside the door and spy on us? Just a routine question. Because if you are, then I won’t bother you” she grinned, the way only she can grin.

,,You knew I was here?”

,,C’mon Luna, do you really think we’re that dumb? Of course we knew! We just wanted to see if you wanted to enter or not. So, do you?”

,,Yeah…yeah I do…” I followed her inside. Mily and Saki were sitting around the tea table Mily had just crafted for them.

,,Take a seat” Saki invited me and I do as he told me.

,,Well…? What’s this all about?”

,,I think you already heard our conversation” Mily took a sip of her tea.

,,Yeah I did…you really hate Elizabeth, don’t you, Mily?”

,,Oh my, how did you even guess that? Yeah, I do.”

,,Mily…uh…are we really doing what Saki said?” I asked her in hopes we wouldn’t go against Elizabeth with such a predictable plan.

,,Of course we are, The most unpredictable plan is the one you can predict. She’ll probably think like this:They’re not going with that plan, it’s too easy.”

,,And you actually think that this will be her thought process?”

,,You think I don’t know her, Luna?”

,,Uh…”

,,Let me tell you a little secret” Mily got angry ,,Who told you about Edgar? Who warned each one of you of Elizabeth? And who’s the witch here?”

I couldn’t answer her, because she was actually right. Mily was quite the special spirit. First, she wasn’t just a ghost. In our universe (because someone explained that the multiverse actually exists) there are certain individuals who are a combination of two or more species. Mily’s one of them. She’s a combination between a ghost, a witch and a spectre.

A spectre is a certain type of ghost. They have a weird blue, shiny appearance and they can use one power: telekinesis. They’re withdrawn people, who have lived tragic lives and that is why they have been granted the opportunity to finish one wish of theirs before they can go to…I don’t know, Heaven and Hell? Allow me to explain: When a spectre dies, a wish of theirs would be randomly selected and assigned to the spirit. They have to fulfill it, in order to advance further in the afterlife and escape earth. Like for example if the wish of a spectre is: “I want to eat cake” and they eat that dessert, then they can go to, let’s say…Heaven. If the wish of the spectre is unachievable though, they will forever be stuck on earth. Pretty sweet, right?

So, we’ve clarified what a spectre is, but now we have to see how this affects Mily.

Because she’s a ghost, Mily gets the following attributes: A special power that reflects her soul, floating, teleportation (although very weak) and a companion.

Because she’s a witch, she’s able to do spells.

Because she’s a spectre, she gets that one wish. I personally don’t know what that wish is and I’ve tried asking Erika, because she was Mily’s teacher, but she didn’t tell me anything regarding that matter, instead she held a two hour speech about why Mily is too stubborn to actually learn telekinesis. Because, as you’ve probably guessed already, Erika is a spectre. Like, a normal one, without any other species.

And so, because of this, logically speaking, Mily should be the strongest, but…somehow, Lord had managed to defeat her several times in the past. Plus, Mily holds knowledge we could only dream of and I’m sure she tells Saki everything she knows, after all, they are best friends.

,,Ghost to Luna, are you there?” Mily snapped her fingers in front of my face, because I was apparently lost in thought and I didn’t answer her.

,,Yeah you absolutely know her. I’m sorry.”

,,Good…now..”

,,HEY I HAVE A QUESTION” Midari interrupted, raising her hand as if she were in school.

,,You always do…” Mily complained ,,What is it?”

,,How are we going to challenge Elizabeth to a duel? Do we send her a letter?”

,,What?” Mily looked offended for some reason ,,We’re in the year 2023. Who even uses letters anymore? We’re calling her!”

Midari looked susprised, her eyes wide open.

,,So you’re telling me that the almighty, Mrs. Goddess Of The Universe, the one and only, HEAD LIBRARIAN, the one who writes destines in pretty little books, HAS A PHONE?! And like…YOU CAN CALL HER?? AND SHE’LL ACTUALLY ANSWER?? Well hand over the phone sis, I’m about to send all my complaints regarding this world! We’ll start with global warming and then I can continue with the fact that the plans I sent to NASA when I was 6 for building a rocket, yes, for exploring the moon, weren’t approved of…”

Mily bursts out laughing and Saki chuckles at what Midari said.

,,WHOA” Midari exclaimed ,,did you see that, Luna? MILY LAUGHED!”

Mily ‘s laugh gradually faded and she pretends to wipe a tear off (we can’t cry).

,,Midari that…that was hilarious…” Mily smiles and Midari looks proud of herself.

,,I wasn’t joking though” she then adds ,,I’ve got a lot of things to complain about! So, when are we calling her?” Midari jumped up from her seat.

,,She’s not going to answer…her secretary will” Saki explained to her.

,,…Mily tell Elizabeth that she’s no fun, will ya?” Midari crossed her arms in pure disappointment.

,,But again” I asked ,,When are we calling her?”

,,Right now. Saki, give me your phone.”

Saki handed her his phone with no complaints. From my angle I could see his background: a photo of him, Mily and Erika.

Mily quickly dialed a number and she put the phone on speaker, so that we could all hear.

,,Central library, what can I do for you?” A calm voice could be heard. The woman that was talking seemed really bored, but also you could tell that she was a bit nervous.

,,Hello? Bethany?” Mily spoke ,,It’s Mily.”

The Bethany lady remained silent or s few seconds.

,,Is there anything I can do for you, Mily..?”

,,Yes, so” Mily tried to say but Midari interrupted.

,,SO! FIRST, WHERE CAN I PLACE MY COMPLAINTS TO THE HEAD LIBRARIAN? Second, tell your boss to answer her phone calls, I wanna talk to her! Third, we wanna fight her!”

Bethany remained silent again, probably reconsidering her life.

,,Is that so? Let me guess, you’re Midari, aren’t you? My creation.”

It was Midari’s turn to freeze.

,,Bethany, don’t let Midari interrupt this conversation. We challenge Elizabeth to a duel. If we win, we get Edgar back and keep the quill. If she wins, she gets her quill back and she can take Edgar.”

,,Are you sure…”

It was my turn to interrupt.

,,Hey…is Edgar alright?”

,,Yes. But who am I talking to?”

,,I’m Luna” I introduced myself.

,,I thought you were Millicent…you really are alike…”

,,Anyway, Beth. Tell Elizabeth we want to challenge her and that we’ll meet in two days, in the school yard.”

,,As you wish. But…please, be careful. You know Elizabeth…her fighting style is predictable but you know how sharp her scythe is. It could cause harm to your souls.”

,,Bethany! One more thing…” I yelled before Mily could close the phone.

,,What is it? Your d…I mean Edgar, is alright, as I’ve previously told you.”

,,Bethany, was Edgar really a librarian before her died?”

The question seemed to shock her. I had found about this from Mily, when she said that she had a little something to tell us about my companion.

,,Yes. Yes he was. I assume Mily told you.”

,,Yeah…yeah…”

Part of me had been in denial for the past few days.I still remember the conversation and what Mily said. I can reproduce what she stated with accuracy:

,,But first, a little something about Edgar…”

,,What is it, Mily…?”

,,Luna…this may be quite shocking for you. Edgar was a librarian when he was alive. He worked under the head librarian of that time. He…he was married. And when Elizabeth became the person that controls the universe she arranged that his wife would be killed and then he risked his life. And then he died as well.”

Erika took a deep breath here and then she continued to speak, adding something to what Mily had already said.

,,This all happened in Salem, back in 1693. We..we knew Edgar and his wife.”

,,Hello? Luna? Are you still there?” Bethany wanted to know ,,Shoot, Elizabeth just entered! I gotta hang up!”

,,What…was…that…” Midari was speechless for the first time in her life. She then turned to Mily, placing her hands on her shoulders, she began shaking her ,,MILY DID THAT WOMAN CREATE ME?? C’MON YOU HAVE TO TELL ME! AND I THOUGHT ELIZABETH WAS THE ONE WHO CREATES PEOPLE!!”

,,Midari stop shaking me and take your hands off of me first!” Mily got angry again.Midari did as told.

,,Well, Elizabeth isn’t the only one who can create people, the other librarians can do that too. They just don’t have absolute power, like Elizabeth does. I mean…not even she’s got full control.”

,,And and Bethany created me?”

,,Apperently” Mily gave a short answer.

,,Then who created you??” Midari was very curious. Mily frowned.

,,Elizabeth, probably” was her reply.

,,FOR REAL? How do you know?” Midari had been very excited about this whole thing regarding the librarians. Probably because she wanted to kidnap one and force them into changing the laws of physics the way she wanted.

,,I have a feeling she’s the one. And there are a few characteristics you can look out for. From what I’ve heard, Bethany creates creative, intelligent, organized people. The other one creates fun-loving people or mostly extroverts. And Elizabeth creates all sorts of humans, that’s why no one can be sure wherever they were created by one on the other.” Mily slowly explained.

,,I bet Millie was created by Bethany, Millie my sister I mean.” After I said that, there was silence for about 10 seconds before Midari spoke:

,,ANYWAY, I gotta go! I’m testing a new bomb I created yesterday” she got up, waved at us and left.

,,Hm…” Mily looked down at the tea she was drinking before I entered ,,Midari’s a good kid.”

,,Indeed…” Saki agreed. Sometimes I even forget that he’s in the room because he’s so quiet. He even talks less than my sister!

,,Hey Mily…I know I should probably ask Midari this but…what’s her backstory?” Mily looked up at me.

,,She never told you?”

,,I mean…she told me about the fact that she got shot…but everyone knows that at this point.”

Mily let out a sigh, then took a biscuit.

,,So…When Midari was a little kid she used to live with her brother and her dad in a house. The moment Midari was born, her mom left the family, running away with the man she was cheating with on her husband, Midari’s dad was an alcoholic and Misaki was left to take care of her.”

,,How old was Misaki again when that happened?”

,,Around ten years old…and yes he took care of Midari, acting more like a dad towards her. At some point in time Midari started calling him “dad” but then she stopped.”

,,That’s actually quite sad…”

,,Yeah I know” Saki continued the story ,,and Misaki had planned to go to college and take her with him. This was when Midari was eight years old and Misaki eighteen. But…something went wrong and thei dad found out that Misaki had been saving up money. And being the drunkard he was, he tried to take the money from Misaki and spend it on beer and stuff.”

,,Then what happened?” The story became more and more disturbing.

,,Well…Oh this is…just sad” Mily tried to explain.

,,Midari’s dad was the one that shot Midari” Saki completed.

,,…What?” was the only thing I could say ,,Midari’s dad…killed…her?”

Suddenly the door bursts open and my sister walks in looking all angry.

,,Mily! What did you do?! WE’RE GOING TO FIGHT ELIZABETH?!”

,,Yes. But you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to.”

,,I do want to do it! Because I want to help getting Edgar back! But I don’t know if I can fight Elizabeth.”

,,Hm….” Mily went silent for a few minutes ,,With your skills I’d say you should fight Bethany.”

,,Wait, we’re fighting Bethany too?” I asked.

,,Yeah. You thought Elizabeth would come and fight us by herself. No way, she’s scared of us!” Mily declared.

,,More like she’s scared of you…” Millie added and Mily grinned.

,,Yeah, more like that. So…I fight Elizabeth…Saki fights…the other librarian…and Millie if you’d like, you can fight Bethany. And Luna can join you.”

,,But…can’t we peacefully discuss this with Elizabeth?” Millie suggested.

,,Peace was never an option” Mily declared.

,, But…I’m sure she’ll understand if we just discuss this with her! I’ve been trying to say this for the past few days but no one is listening to me!” Millie unintentionally raised her voice.

,,It’s not going to work…”

,,WILL YOU LISTEN TO ME FOR ONCE?!” Millie really shouted this time ,,Why do none of you listen to me?! I’m telling you, violence isn’t the answer! Please, Mily…”

,,Alright then, try and TALK to Elizabeth. See if it works” Mily crossed her arms ,,Convince her to give Edgar back but also to revive us. TRY it”

,,Fine! I’ll do it!”

Millie storms out in anger. She doesn’t usually get so worked up over things, or maybe she does, but I wouldn’t know, because she stopped talking to me.

Eversince she woke up as a ghost, she hasn’t been acting like herself. Or..maybe..just maybe, this was her true self and I didn’t know her as well as I thought I knew her. The past week had a severe impact on her and although she had more fighting skills than I did, she believed that everything could be solved without violence.

Next to me, Mily scoffed and then sighed. She looked displeased, but also lost in thought.

,,What’s on your mind?” I tried to ask.

,,Why would you want to know?” she snapped back.

,,I…you’re thinking about her, aren’t you, Mily? What’s wrong?”

,,Since when are you sympathetic?”

,,Hmm, I don’t know. So tell me what’s bothering you. Because there’s something else on your mind and you’re clearly hiding it.” Mily looked at Saki, who had been awfully quiet for the entire Millie outburst. He looked at me and then adjusts his glasses.

,,Luna, your sister can’t do magic” he bluntly says ,,We… we lied to her to make her feel better. But she can’t.”

I look at him in disbelief. Since my memories started coming back, little by little, I would remember bits and pieces from mine and Millie’s childhood. As as far as I remember, she always wanted to be able to cast spells. Becoming a witch was a more important goal in her life then getting her highschool degree.

,,What are you saying, Saki? Of course she can. I’ve seen her do it. We all have!” Mily doesn’t look me in the eyes and mumbles something.

,,Mily” I raise my voice a little ,,What did you do again?”

,,Ok fine! I…everytime you’ve seen your sister cast any spell this past month, it wasn’t actually her casting it. I’d always chant something behind her back to make it appear as if she could do it.”

I stare at her for a couple of seconds.

,,Why though? Why didn’t you tell her? Or either of us?”

,,BECAUSE she came to me to teach her! She was so happy to finally learn how to do it and I simply couldn’t deny her the experience. And then I realized that she can’t do it. And it would have broken her heart if I told her. You know, shatter her dreams” Mily waves her hand in the air and by the looks of the movement, I’m surprised she didn’t freeze the kitchen or something.

,,And uhm…don’t mean to be rude or anything, but this is bothering you at a time like this?”

Mily looks at me with the angriest expression.

,,YES! Luna I lied to her! I don’t feel good when I lie.”

,,Sorry, can’t relate.”

,,Yeah yeah. Feels good about lying that you didn’t eat those pancakes two weeks ago” she raised an eyebrow (well, the only one she had visible).

,,You knew?”

,,I always know when you lie. It’s obvious” Mily stares at me again.

,,We’re straying from the subject” I reminded her.

,,The point is, that I don’t want to have the quill just for myself. By that I mean, I couldn’t care less if I came back to life or not. I want the quill so I can tell Edgar to write something that will make Millie be able to do magic” Mily confesses and Saki nods in approval.

,,But to also revive your teacher” I add. Mily’s eye goes wide and she stares at me with the same angry gaze from earlier.

,,This was only mentioned once, like a year or two ago. How the hell did you make that connection?”

,,Truth be told” I stand up from the table ,,I had a nice chat with Erika about it” I announced her. Mily’s expression doesn’t change and Saki, to avoid having to say something (not that he talks too much), took a biscuit and started eating it.

,,And what exactly did Erika tell you about it?” she stares at me, probably not believing what I just told her, even though it was true.

,,She said, that when you were still in Salem, back in 1688, you met this witch that became your magic tutor. And that’s why you didn’t want to participate in Erika’s classes anymore. And Erika told me that the woman died and then you and…wait I need to remember this part. So Erika said something about the future being rewritten and something about “crazy librarian dude”, which I assume is Edgar. And then Erika also mentioned that your goal in life is to revive your teacher. And I think I heard Midari say something about this too, but a long time ago, so I’m assuming it’s true.”

After I finished my exciting paragraph, Mily stared at me and then took a sip from her tea, probably thinking about an answer.

,,Well yes” she finally says and Saki gulps ,,What Erika said, is true. Except that part about Edgar. Listen, I’m not his biggest fan, but he isn’t that insufferable.”

,,Then I’m assuming the part about the future being rewritten is also true?” I curiously asked her.

,,Depends on how you look at it” was her only answer, before her closed her eye. She then spoke again:

,,I need to train you. Your fighting skills are worse then ever.”

,,Doesn’t Millie need training too?” Saki asked this time, despite not talking for the last half an hour.

,,No. She can handle it. Her kind is naturally good at this.” I wondered what the witch wanted to say with “her kind” but I didn’t question her.

,,Well then, we have to go. Luna you’re coming with us for your training.”

,,Is this plot relevant or can we skip this part?” Mily looked at me like I was crazy.

,,It’s plot relevant. Now come on!”

Even though Mily said that this part of the story is relevant, I don’t agree, so I’m obviously skipping it. I never liked training scenes in books/movies anyway, mainly because they’re boring. I mean, sure, if they really are plot relevant, like Mily said, then they’d be wonderful. But most of the times they aren’t, so let’s get straight to the action.

After two hours of hard training with Mily (two hours in which she literally kicked my ass, turns out, if you don’t practice every day you forget how to even hold a sword properly) I was finally allowed to take a break, break in which I did nothing. I just stared at the sky (because we were in the school yard) and tried to assign each cloud a different shape. I could swear that one could looked like a quill.

After two more hours of hard training Mily finally dismissed me, so I went back to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich. As soon as I opened the door, I saw my sister melting a candle with her ability.

,,Heyo..uh…Millie? What are you doing to that poor candle?”

,,I’m taking my anger out on it” she says and the pink flame that was melting the wax intensified.

,,Do you…want to talk about it?” I asked her and started preparing my food at the same time.

,,It’s just that, I haven’t been feeling well lately. I feel like I shouldn’t be here.”

I raised an eyebrow and added salad on my food.

,,Well what do you mean?”

,,I feel like this curse is suffocating me. I feel like I shouldn’t be here, doing nothing the whole day.”

,,Well then, what else do you want to do?”

She looked at me and then averted her gaze.

,,I want to see a soul again” she stated, with the same blunt tone that Saki usually has.

,,That’s not exactly a hobby” I told her and then I took a glass and filled it with orange juice.

,,I didn’t say anything about a new hobby in the first place. Listen, I really want to see a soul again.”

,,To like…eat it?” I asked, since souls are the primary energy sources for ghosts.

,,No! Not to eat it! Only you eat souls! It’s disgusting, honestly…”

,,I can’t blame myself, they taste good. So then, if you don’t want to eat souls, what do you want to do with them?” I finally sat down and started enjoying my sandwich.

,,I want to collect them” she said and took me by surpise.

,,You can’t be serious. Why would you want to collect souls? That’s creepy!” I started eating.

,,More like, you eating souls is creepy. They don’t even taste good!”

,,Yes they do. Don’t argue with me over this, I’m just trying to eat,”

,,Ok fine. Listen I’ve been researching how to get rid of this curse…” she confessed but got interrupted by a scream.

I swear every time there’s something important that is about to get revealed, something else interrupts it. For example, everytime Edgar was close to confessing who his wife is or just another random part of his backstory, he got interrupted by Midari. And I could swear that what we just heard was also Midari’s scream. This girl really has a talent for interrupting important events.

Millie quickly sat up and I followed her. Just then, I noticed something and went to a window.

,,Millie, stop! You have to see this!” Millie stopped in the tracks and looked out the window, in the direction I was pointing. Outside, right in the middle of the yard, there stood Elizabeth. I’d recognize her anywhere, mainly because of her golden eyes, but also because, as far as I noticed, she wears a red beret and it’s kind of hard to miss that one. Next to her, there stood another girl, clearly taller, with blonde long hair. She seemed nervous for some reason And then I saw Mily storming angrily towards them and I understood why the woman was so nervous.

Millie pointed at Midari, who was on the ground, probably because the librarians scared her and she fell. Another woman was trying to help her up, but Midari seemed to refuse any help the woman might have provided.

,,Let’s go outside” I told my sister and she nodded. Millie then took my hand and instead of use using the stairs like normal people, we teleported outside.

Honestly, I love teleporting! It’s fun and I don’t have to walk anywhere. But when someone else teleports along with me it’s not that amazing.

As we arrived outside the first thing I noticed was that Mily was standing in-between Midari and the pretty librarian that was trying to help her up.

,,Oh c’mon Mily I was just trying to help her…” the librarian tried to reason with her, which didn’t seem to work.

,,Don’t you even dare touch her” Mily was about to snap ,,Don’t you dare, all of you, even try to touch any of them!”

Elizabeth frowned at her and even though I couldn’t see Mily’s face, I was sure she frowned back.

Mily turned around at looked at Midari.

,,Midari, are you alright?” she softly asked. Midari nodded and clung onto Mily’s dress. Mily helped her up and then turned to Elizabeth.

,,Why are you here?” Mily’s tone changed into a spiteful one.

,,You challenged me to a duel, did you not, Mily?” Elizabeth had the same tone as Mily.

,,Yeah but not today” Midari answered instead of Mily.

,,Oh I’m sorry didn’t Bethany announce you that we’re coming earlier?” Elizabeth turned to the blonde woman, who I now knew for sure was Bethany.

,,No, she did not” Mily was getting angrier by the minute.

,,Well, we’re here now” Elizabeth crossed her arms and then looked behind Mily and Midari, straight into my eyes. I gulped.

,,Hi!” the woman that tried helping Midari waved at me and my sister ,,Awwww! Bee, look! They’re adorable!”

Bethany smiled slightly and nodded.

,,Yeah they are.”

Just then, I noticed a very important detail. I took a step closer to make sure that I what I saw was actually real. I then pointed at Bethany and asked:

,,Do you have ears?”

Bethany looked confused.

,,Of course I have ears!”

,,Yeah but not everyone has cat ears so I was just making sure that it’s not only my imagination.”

I should probably explain this. Basically, Bethany doesn’t have normal human ears like the other two, but instead, she has cat ears. And I swore she had a tail too.

,,Yeah, so what? Listen I didn’t want to be born this way because people never take me seriously. They’re all like:”OMG SHE HAS EARS IT’S SO CUTE”! Please stop saying this and take me seriously for once” Bethany pleaded.

,,I’m taking you seriously” I said and my sister nodded (she was trying hard not to laugh at Bethany’s outburst, not in a mean way, but because it was actually cute).

,,We do not have time for this” Mily reminded us.

,,Right” Bethany agreed ,,the rules are simple. We win, we get the quill back and keep Edgar. You win and you get to keep the quill and take Edgar back. Choose three people who will fight. If the three people can beat all three of us, then you win. Easy!”

Mily turned to us.

,,Midari and me will go. We still need one more person.”

Just then, Erika ran towards us and yelled:

,,I’m in!”

,,This wasn’t really the plan” I told Mily.

,,Desperate times call for desperate measures” she responded. Just that morning she told us that she and Saki would be fighting against them and now she changed her opinion. Midari seemed to be like a good choice though, especially because she seemed to be the type of person who could annoy and destroy Elizabeth at the same time. Though something was missing.

,,Question, Elizabeth…” Mily probably frowned again ,,Where is Edgar?”

,,Oh I left him at the library. You really thought you could go against me with such a predictable plan? Also I had so much fun writing that line you said, the one about “Of course we are, The most unpredictable plan is the one you can predict. She’ll probably think like this:They’re not going with that plan, it’s too easy”.”

Mily clenched her fists. She was about to cast a spell on Elizabeth but for some reason, she couldn’t.

Millie gasped behind me as she probably understood what was happening. I remembered Mily saying that it was hard to control us, not impossible. And that was exactly what happened. Elizabeth knew all along this was going to happen.
