Chapter XXX Artificial terror

Chapter XXX Artificial terror

Just as both Samukai and Phantom took their battle stance, the artificial angel ripped off the remaining veins and set itself free. It screeched and lunged at the warrior. He tried to block it with his normal blades, but the golem was stronger and easily overpowered the samurai. It grabbed his helmet and lifted him up just to smash him into the ground. Demon aimed abbadon at it, yet before it could hit it the angel flew up. In the air it moved quickly as a wasp. In fact it was fast enough to dodge the red beam. While it couldn't destroy this one, it had made rather big holes in a few others and the roof from which sunlight poured in making it easier to see.

Yellow aura danced around the angel's hand. Then it formed into a javelin, albeit it looked more like a thunderbolt. It threw it at the demon. He managed to shield himself with his wings. The javelin stopped just right before his left eye. It ripped itself from the wing and returned to its wielder. Before it could throw it again, a fireball from Noktum hit it back. The artificial angel now scanned the area to find its third opponent. When it finally noticed the magician, it flew at him with its mouth open wide as if it was trying to bite him. But before it could attack him, Fenfir jumped from the shadow, catching the angel with his mouth. His fangs dug deeply into golem's body as it squirmed trying to free itself. It then bite the wolf near his nose. Hell hound instead of yelping in pain simply tightened his mouth and soon after angel's body snapped in half and the top had fallen to the ground. Wolf then spit out the remaining part.

- If it won't burst into flames then I think that Fenfir might eat it- Phantom said as he went closer to the corpse.

- I don't think you should feed him with just anything

- If hounds can easily stomach a rock, then I guess some golem won't make too much of a difference. But I must admit, it was a better fighter than I thought

- Master, I don't think that remaining here will do us any good. We should get out of there

- I agree with Noktum. I'm pretty sure that at least one person saw how the abbadon hit the roof- Samukai said stomping at the head of the golem, just to make sure that it won't get up.

- I would rather destroy the rest of those bastards. You know, just in case they too have decided to wake up. Black comet might be too noticeable, but then again abbadon would take some time- he then continued to wonder what the best spell was for this occasion. As much as samurai had not liked the idea of staying in this dome any longer he had to admit that doing something with those armors would probably made their lives somewhat easier. Just as he was about to prepare waves of abyss he heard buzzing. A lot of it to be precise. As he looked around he saw from where it came. Or rather from who it came. The artificial angels slowly started to free themselves from the blue veins and hovered in the air. But they weren't at all focused on the intruders. They were much more interested in the bright light that came from the hole. The angels stayed in the air for a while not reacting to anything. It almost was like they were too concentrated on sensing something, and have not even budged as Phantom killed three of them with abbadon.

The artificial angels looked down on the floor. Then they have dived down, using their sharp claws to dig away the ground. Chaos just observed in utter confusion as the golems continued their weird antics. Just then Phantom saw some blue shine coming from under the ground. Angels started ripping parts from the light blue crystals that were placed under the places from which blue veins rose. Then it hit him. If one wasn't using arts to make golems then there was one other way. Much more costly but also allowing to create much more of them in a shorter time. And it was relying on using the so-called magic crystals. They were usually found deep underground and their unique trait was possessing a great amount of magic aura inside them. No one really knew exactly how it was possible for non living things to even have this aura let alone in this amount. But one thing was certain, they were great sources of energy and were used to extend one's own aura albeit with a risk.

Hell used the same crystals to give shadows their aura, but not straight up bring them to life. Or at least he had not heard of that. If he was to bring this revelation to Lord Lucifer and Beelzebub then he surely will be promoted to be a prince. But that would have waited, now there was another problem at hand. The angels were greedily consuming the crystals going as far as to even steal from others if they had not enough.

- How about we get out of there before they finish their meal?- Samukai was ready to cast the arts of shadow theater at a moment's notice. But the demon seemed to not listen to him and just observed how golems feasted on the crystals. The angels then abruptly stopped eating. Which could mean one thing. They were out of crystals. Artificial angels stayed still for a moment. A rather long moment to be honest. Warrior was thinking if he was edible enough for them. Black lead could have been too much for them, but he had not wanted to stay there and check it out.

Just as he was casting his art all of the angels took off to the sky. They were heading right to the hole made by Phantom. At first Chaos thought it to be a somewhat good sign. Maybe they were supposed to return somewhere. A Vatican perhaps. Now that wasn't exactly great news. If they were to report what they saw then the problem with Champions would only get worse. When the last angel left and they heard terrified screams mixed with horrifying shrieks of artificial angels, the third and probably most morbid option seemed to be an answer. If that dome was supposed to be some sort of hatchery or nest for those golems then there is a chance that this town was nothing more than a simple sacrifice, a feast for them. The very idea made samurai sick.

Phantom then followed the angels. His head peeked just right above the hole to observe the havoc. A great white mass covered the streets, gradually moving from one side to another when there was nothing more left to eat. Demon was honestly surprised. Not once in his life had he ever considered seeing angels kill so many at once. One thing would have been if it was a simple quick and maybe painless death. That's usually how they killed. But they were straight up devouring everything they could. He saw vibrant colors in the distance, which probably were spells. He then returned to his team.

- How's the situation out there?- warrior asked.

- I would say that it is nowhere near bad if you can stomach seeing whatever is left out of many bodies littering the streets- he had not even continued his answer as he saw how samurai shuddered at the thought- Now, I guess leaving it as it is might get attention from Vatican

- So do you plan to do anything with that or just leave?

- I mean the town is lost either way, but having those angels have all the fun would leave a bad taste in my mouth. My plan is to wait here for a few minutes and if it doesn't get worse then we will leave. Otherwise I cast a black comet

- I dare to say that the master came with a great solution. So Samukai, do we go out to see the carnage?- Noktum proposed. Something about the coldness in his words or even the lack of care about what was going on made the warrior slightly uneasy, as for Phantom he felt somewhat proud of him. Magician never struck him as someone who enjoys violence if unnecessary, there were more unknowns about him that the demon would like to admit. Samukai just slowly nodded. It couldn't have been that bad, right?

Soon after the demon blew another hole with abbadon samurai saw how wrong he was with his previous thought. Blood was all over the streets and buildings accompanied by claw marks that dug deep into stone. In the distance he saw guardsmen casting spells. While they had stopped the white mass for a while, it just stormed at them with greater force than before and soon there was nothing left of the fifteen or so guards that once stood proudly. Then the demon heard buzzing coming right at them. A good thirty of the artificial angels were coming to get them.

- Ever incinerating fire vortex!- Phantom shouted as fire was spinning around him. Then it expanded taking the shape of a tornado and set aflame a good quarter of the town. It did take care of the approaching golems but the rest still feasted to their hearts desire.

Samukai stood there dumbfounded, not even shivering at the sight, just watching as the angels hunted their victims among the fire. Their white armor started to turn black in some places. If he had not known better, he would be trying with all his might to awake from what could've been called a nightmare. Yet this image was something he once saw. He was sure of it. Just where? He tried to remember it by looking at his surroundings. Something wasn't right. Where once stood a stone block one could call a house now was a wooden building. It was like those in Seiryu. But what would it be doing here? How did it even get there? Had he not seen it before? It wasn't the only thing that seemed off to him. The screams of angels and people died down. Had the demon taken care of them with that one spell? If so then where were they? No matter where he looked there was only fire, those wooden buildings and nothing more. They wouldn't have left him, neither of them could properly read a map so it would have been unwise to do so.

Then he noticed someone in the distance. Their silhouette was distorted by the flames but the samurai was able to tell that it was human-like. After that even more figures appeared from the fire. Each of them was closer and closer to him until he could see them clearly. Each of them wore red armor almost like his, with a great bird crest of the chest. He knew it too well. Suzaku's soldiers, but what would they be doing there? Was the fire their fault? Of course it was. It all was their fault. Just as he was about to draw Izanagi he heard his name in the distance and felt something hard hitting him in the back.

After that everything went normal. Or as normal as a bunch of artificial angels devouring an entire town can be. He was on his knees with a demon just right beside him, scythe in his hand. That probably was what hit him.

- If you need to space out do it after the battle, not during it- Phantom scolded him as he was firing an abbadon at the golems above them. Warrior just murmured something which the demon guessed to be sorry. He couldn't pay too much attention to that because of two angels and dived down to get him. He blasted one of them with a bone cracking impact and the second one went for the samurai instead. As Phantom observed how Samukai fought off the golem he couldn't help but feel that something wasn't right with the warrior. Usually his moves were smooth, one easily changing into another, but now they were sloppy as samurai seemed to use much more strength than before.

Even the way he had his grip on the hilt changed. He always held his hands close yet this time each of them was at the very edge of the hilt. Now the demon couldn't say that for sure but if he was a betting man then he would say that it had something to do with the dream that warrior had. Of course he could be wrong seeing how samurai easily cut off the wing of the angel. Golem hit the ground and tried to get away from the warrior. Samukai gave the angel no chances and quickly stabbed it in the head. It still moved for a while until it finally stayed still.

Meanwhile Noktum and Fenfir were trying to fend off a group of ten angels that circled around them just like hungry vultures ready to strike at any moment. Magician was casting fire spells and the hound tried to catch one of them with his fangs. He managed to get one but three others clung to him, digging deep with their claws into his body. Wolf yelped in pain before rolling on the ground in order to get rid of the golems. Two of them were crushed and the third one was hit by a spell coming from the shadow.

Even though their numbers were decreasing the artificial angels were still able to cause chaos in Korona. They were going even after buildings, chipping them gradually until some of them were nothing more than a few stones at best. Yet there was one building that seemed to not attract them in any way. It was an old chapel on the very edge of the town. Inside of it a rather young priest was running frantically. Situation was bad, really bad. To think it all happened when he was around. The nest shouldn't be active until two more weeks. If he was to contact the Vatican he could even lose his head. But waiting with the information would be even worse. He needed to think of a solution right now. He kept on circling inside the chapel and finally came with something that might save his head.

Maybe, just maybe if he was to contact king Leopold they could hide the incident in one way or another. Taking one last glance at the town before proceeding with the plan he saw red beams appear from the nest or somewhere close to it. That spell surely had not belonged to a human. Luck seemed to be with him at the moment. He could always tell that it was a demon's fault. He heard that one was running wild in these lands so it was perfect.

Priest placed his hand right to the temple. For a moment he felt a sharp pain and then his left eye turned from brown to orange.

In the meantime a similar thing was happening to king Leopold. Just as he was in his chamber talking with Iscariot and Vladislav. His servants panicked but the king said it was nothing. Then someone's voice echoed in his mind.

My dearest king, I am truly sorry for speaking with you in such a way but something truly terrible has happened!

Sebastian is that you? What is happening in Korona?

The twelfth nest has been attacked by a demon

Shocked expression that appeared on the king's face surely got the attention of the remaining two men in the chamber. King Vladislav was worried about what caused it and Iscariot was simply curious.

It can't be!

Not only that, but Type W is running wild. We need your help at the very moment, otherwise the Vatican might hear about this.

Then the link was cut. It took the king some while to get rid of the headache but after that he tried to stay calm for as long as it was possible. He felt a sharp gaze coming from angel's red eyes. He pretty much commanded him to tell what was happening without even muttering a word. With no other choice he sat down and took a deep sigh.

- It would seem that the nest in Korona had been attacked by a demon- that got Iscariot intrigued. Of course there was no use to say that it was the demon he was looking for but it was a high possibility.

- What are the closest towns or villages to it?- power asked as he made himself comfortable on the chair.

- Well the closest ones seems to be Potok

- How valuable is it?

- Excuse me?

- Is there anything that is useful for the kingdom?

- It is a simple town that's responsible for chiseling stone, but may I know why you are asking about that?

- Isn't it obvious? Right here we have a perfect opportunity to finally slaughter this fiend once and for all. Thus it is a perfect time to bring my plan into fruition- Leopold paled at the angel's words. He knew exactly what the power had planned and he had not agreed with that in any way. Albeit who he was to question the being that served their Lord?

- But to think of a possible sacrifice of an entire town... No, as a king my duty is to protect my kingdom and my people. I cannot allow you to do as you please with them

- Because it is your duty you should be able to let some die in order to save the rest- angel sent a cold glaze to the king who remained unfazed by that- Beside if all will go well then the loss in civilians will be minuscule if any

- So even you are not sure that it will work?- Vladislav finally joined the conversation in hope to bring some sense into both of them.

- I have not said that. But the more we wait the chances of it going flawlessly keep on decreasing. King Leopold, gather your champions and order them to get here. Also gather your soldiers, they too will have to know what's their part in this

- Before I do that, allow me to ask you that, even if we turn that town into a trap then what are the odds that this demon will go there?

- If the demon that attacked the nest is the one I am thinking of then my aura will be more than enough bait for him. Now let us get to the work- Iscariot said with icy tone as he stood up and returned to his chamber. Leopold left to gather everyone and Vladislav stayed there wondering if demons and angels truly were any different from each other.
