Chapter V Underground mazes sure are fun

Samukai got closer to the hole in the wooden floor. He saw Noktum, who tried to get up.

- You're fine there?- asked the warrior.

- Well, I think so- replied the magician.

Shadow finally stood up and started looking around. Only a while passed when he saw four entrances or exits. Each of them had jambs made of old, gray bricks.

- I think you all should see this

Hearing that, the rest of the team went closer to the hole and Samukai jumped down. He landed close to the magician. Fenfir went next and Phantom jumped last. When all of them were finally down, Phantom said:

- So what do we do with this?

- That's actually your first line that I must agree with, I mean we can't go in blind- replied the samurai.

- We could've checked each of them, but we do have things to do- said magician.

Fenfir started sniffing the air. He went to the entrance that was closest to him, but suddenly turned to the next side and went to that one.

- What are you doing?- Phantom asked- hey come back here

- Do you think that he might have felt something? Hounds, after all have a great sense of smell- Noktum said.

- Wait a second...- demon opened one of his hands and showed the crystal. At first it didn't do anything, but after a while it started spinning like crazy. When it finally stopped it was pointing either on the entrance Fenfir was before or now.

- He might have felt a crystal. Hmph, I know he would be useful

- You sure it would be there, do we even know where they are?- Samukai asked.

- Lord Lucifer told me that the crystals would be in temples, and it do look like an entrance to one

- I hope that we won't end with some kind of a maze- warrior said as all of them followed the hell hound.

Corridors weren't that different from those in the stronghold. Only thing that changed was the color of the walls. Though they were dirty, anyone could be able to tell that they were yellow.

They were lucky that the corridors were big enough to normally walk in there. Even Fenfir had enough space, and that's a lot considering he was more or less eight meters tall. Or at least he had enough space, until everything was getting smaller. Hellhound now needed to crouch.

After a while, corridors became so small that Fenfir couldn't go further and Phantom was touching the ceiling with his head. If they wanted to proceed, then the wolf would have to be three meters tall at best.

- Samurai, do something about this- demon ordered.

- Something? Like what, turn into shadow?

- Maybe

- Fine- samurai then casted the arts of the shadow theater to turn the giant wolf into the shadow on the ground.

After that, the rest of the team continued wandering. Finally they stopped when the demon found a fork in the road. It was a small room with three ways to go. One in the middle, one on the left and right.

- So, which one is it?- Samukai asked.

- Give me a while- Phantom answered and once again let the crystal do the job.

It was pointing now at the entrance on the left.

- That way

Corridor looked the same as before. All of them were silent and no one wanted to start a conversation. That was until Samukai said:

- Since we have nothing better to do, maybe you will tell us, if you've ever been in a team?

Demon remained silent as if he didn't hear a question.

- Have you ever been in a team?

Once again Phantom was silent. At least now, the samurai knew that the demon was ignoring him.

- Yes or no?

- You're going to annoy me, until I tell you?

- Well if we want to somehow withstand each other, we should get to know each other better. Right mage?

- This is true- Noktum replied.

- Fine, yes I was

- See, was it that hard

Demon grunted in reply. Warrior wanted to ask another question, but Phantom suddenly stopped.

- What?- Samukai said as he bumped into the demon.

Before them was a giant room filled with entrances. They were lucky enough that Fenfir could now normally walk again.

- Which one now?

Crystal was now slowly spinning. Phantom waited a while to see it go crazy and then stop pointing at something, but crystal only drifted from one doors to another as if it couldn't decide which one to choose.

- Well...I need to trust my intuition- demon said.

The entire team was ready to go, when they all heard a rumbling noise coming from above. Cracks started appearing on the ceiling. Few seconds later they saw a weird creature falling from the hole, where cracks appeared.

This creature had six long, thin legs, a slim, light green body that looked like a mosquito and a small head with bright yellow eyes. Its head ended with a long thing that looked like an oversized needle. Noktum guessed that it was something that helped drink blood.

- Why does it have to be a bug?- Samukai seemed disgusted.

- At least I know, that fire will hurt it- Phantom said while preparing a spell.

- Please don't cast spells while we are there

- And that's why?

- 'Cause the entire thing could collapse

- Leader, I think it's time to show my skills- Noktum suddenly said when he stood before the two.

He pointed his finger at the creature, with was coming closer, and said:

- Thou shall be enslaved in the eternal dust; Trap of the desert tomb

Sand appeared and encircled the creature, then quickly rose and caged the insect in a tomb made of sand and dust.

- So a trap is it?- Phantom asked, interested.

- Yes, I choose this one because it will not let this creature break free. Even if this might look like it could dig down, the tomb covers both up and down. And it better don't even think about breaking it, it is as hard as steel

- Heh, you sure 'll be good enough to be my student- demon complimented the young shadow.

- I'll make sure to not disappoint you

- Can we leave that for later, we still don't know which way to go

- We don't know? You meant you don't know samurai, because I say we will go to the doors in front of us, 'cause that's the right way

- Do as you will, but don't blame me if we get lost in some kind of a maze

Phantom now led the team. The way he chose had many corners that went once to the right, once to the left, and after more or less twenty turns they all met a dead end. Or at least it looked like one, but after carefully checking the surroundings, Noktum saw yet another turn.

Again they were blindly going deeper into the maze. After a while Samukai said:

- Do you enjoy getting us lost in some weird places?

- Why do you think that we are lost?

- I don't know, maybe because we are here for a long time and should already get out of here, and yet we are here. Remind me why are you a leader?

- Do you doubt my leadership?!- Phantom said with a hint of anger in his voice.

- Did you even have any that to begin with?

- You know what? Fuck it- after that Phantom summoned abbadon and released reddish beam on the samurai, which broke through the wall.

- You son of a- he didn't end because the place he was now in, and especially the things that were there made him speechless.

He was now in one giant room filled with many weird things and symbols. It all looked like some kind of place where you can give praises to deities. And a stone statue of some giant in armor confirmed that thought.

Statue was some kind of a big, bulky armor. Its helmet had four small horns, two on the left and other two on the right. Weird thing about that statue was that it only showed the upper half. Close to the belt to be precise. He also saw that he had some sort of kusazuri, which pretty much were plates that were around the waist. The only weird thing about it was that it was made of one plate and had a break in the front. It stood on giant rock that wasn't anyhow shaped as it should be for a statue.

Samukai didn't see many statues in his short life, but each of them were either on the stone square or rectangle. And that made him think that the statue wasn't complete yet and it rather won't be.

- See, I found a room- echoed the voice of his leader.

- Rather used me to find a room, you wanted to say

- You are giving yourself too much credits

- It is not relevant who found it but rather is what we can find here- Noktum's voice of reason tried to calm them.

- Well there is one giant statue- Samukai said while he got up.

Phantom slithered to the statue and examined it for a while. Noktum on the other hand started exploring the room. Fenfir tried to make a bigger entrance for himself and after a while he also joined the magician.

- It definitely doesn't look like any god or goddess I know- Samurai said wondering what was that statue- Is there any demon or angel that looks like this?

- Doubt about the demon, so the only thing that's left is an angel- Phantom then proceeded to check the statue from every angle until he finally found something written on the back of the rock.

- It's Exodus

- What?

- It's name. Exodus is its name

- Why does it sound familiar?

-I remember some angels quoting that name from their book, so it is angel, case closed- while the demon looked proud of himself, the warrior wasn’t really sure of that.

Meanwhile the magician wandered for a while and saw that from the walls in the deeper part of the room were covered in vines. At first he didn't notice anything special, but after taking a closer look, he saw that behind some of the vines was something. One low tier fire spell was enough to take care of them and vines have shown what they keep in secret.

Behind them was a painting of the exact same statute, but much bigger. Below the figure were letters or something that was supposed to resemble them. But neither of them could read them. Even Phantom admitted that he had no idea what language it was supposed to be. Thus he dismissed that as mere gibberish.

Fenfir went deeper with Noktum following him. Magician then noticed some sort of table made of stone. On that table was a broken clay plaque.

- I've found another thing

Rest of the team joined him.

Plaque had something written on it and this time Phantom read:

- It raised it's hand and said, I bring thou stone that will build the temple of my. And the stone appeared and made a sphere- and that's where the plaque ends.

- Do any of you have any idea what this gibberish is?

- None

- Sadly, no

- Well it is broken, so maybe there's more. I say we should take it now- Noktum then put the plaque in the bag.

They continued the exploration until they all saw many, many stairs leading up.

- We are going there- demon exclaimed.

- Better don't let our guard down

After climbing the stairs, they found themselves in front of the entrance that was carved in some cave.

- So that was the entrance- Noktum wondered.

- Now that's weird- Samukai's voice had their attention.

They were on the grassland. It wouldn't be anything special, but the grass here was in shades of red, orange and sometimes yellow. Trees looked like they would be in autumn, but they could feel that it was rather warm like it would be in summer.

Phantom took out the crystal which was now getting warmer. They probably were close to the next crystal.
