Chapter 53: Wrongful Conviction?

Chapter 53: Wrongful Conviction?

Damien didn’t even bother to face the group of savages and give them the pleasure to know what was going to happen to them. Instead he powered up his intense flame with the energies of their victims. With the help of his own Mana Fluid he brought its strength out to the extreme and let it run wild. It began to burn through the room and bring everything to nothingness. Damien made his way out where he came from as he heard the voices of panic and fear run amok.

Damien was now outside in a vantage point watching as the flames spread to the outside building. Everything was being disintegrated into ash and the wailing of the sufferers were no longer heard. Before the fire spread to the rest of the town, Damien recalled the rampaging flame back to his control and extinguished it. The abandoned building that once stood there sheltering the scum of this town was no more and Damien felt as if he had accomplished something good for the world. Little did he know such actions were just a drop of water in a boundless ocean and no matter how much he tried to do good, it will never be enough.

Damien snuck back into his room without alerting anyone and took a direly needed rest from the horrors of the world. He still didn’t take into account every action he had done but it was better that way for now. He closed his eyes and forgot about the entire night. Throughout his sleep, his Core took the time to subdue the lurking Space Dreamer’s control over his body. Its shadowy dark tendrils slowly retreated back to the depths it came from. Damien’s face became visibly relaxed as the dark creature inside of it was barred from feeding off his emotional distress. That wasn’t all his Core was doing for him either. Now that it had more control since he was sound asleep, the Core willed Damien’s mind to erase all of his actions that very night. The Core knew that if he were to awake with these memories he would be back right where he left off, a cold-blooded zombie at the whim of an extraterrestrial beast whose sole existence was to completely control Damien as its vessel.

Damien awoke to a bustling commotion first thing in the morning. The whole town of Lias appeared to be up in arms. Damien quickly got up and ready for his departure before coming out to a busy town.

“It seems like everyone is involved, I wonder what could’ve happened. I just hope those kids are okay. They must’ve had a grand meal and a nice place to stay.”

Damien had forgotten about what really happened to them but like the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. He imagined the best for them and that became his reality for now. After he got his things together, he checked out of his room and came out to a mess. Every townsfolk was raving up and down about the mayor missing, dead people in an alleyway, and the disappearance of the abandoned building. They were yelling grandiose conspiracies that were a bunch of random gibberish. Seeing all of this commotion brought about dejavu along with a stinging pain in his brain.

As he was clutching his head in grimace, he locked eye contact with a woman surrounded by several worried townsfolk. From the conversations he could hear, he was able to determine she was the wife of the now missing mayor. She took notice of Damien and his suspicious attire so she pointed him out to the entire crowd. With her trembling finger and her gut wrenched face, she brought the attention of everyone onto Damien. Everyone quieted down as they shushed each other into silence. The once noisy and gung-ho environment turned to an even worse unbearable silence to Damien, who could now feel the full effect of his ringing migraine. The mayor’s wife then came out hoarsely for everyone to hear.

“That man must be hiding something. I have never seen him in my life either. It must have been him! Where is my husband, you foul beast of a man!”

Damien didn’t have the energy to refute any accusations since he was currently struggling with a pain that took his thoughts away. Damien was feeling like two separate wills were tearing his mind in two, trying to overtake him in the moment and in fact that was what was going on. One side was trying to keep his memories locked away, while the other tried to bring them back with all the hints around him. His facial expressions along with his silence led everyone to start believing he was truly the suspect of the mayor’s disappearance. One thing led to another and now the town was in an uproar over Damien’s role in this crime.

The townsfolk were ready to go on a crusade against Damien while the travelers with no affiliation watched on with great amusement. They watched Damien start to become encircled by them with the strongest being in the Mid Sky Realm. Everyone was ready to see some action unfold but little did they know they were dealing with someone beyond their capabilities. Luckily for them however, Damien was not one to do anything harmful in the right state of mind. Damien was not in the mood to deal with any more problems than the one he had so quickly made his decision to leave to an isolated place.

“Be quiet, I can't hear myself think! I didn’t do anything wrong so leave me alone!”

Damien took off with the stomp of his foot and broke the encirclement with no extra effort. The display of his speed with how easily he escaped dismayed almost everyone to back off. They believed it was just a matter of time to get him but it was just a fallacy. The only one to chase him down was an old man with wrinkles covering his entire face and looked ready to keel over at any moment. He closed the gap between them, since Damien was not running away at full speed. The old man was being cheered on like a hero of justice and he was fueled by such fantasies.

“You work-like creature! You best not let me get my hands on filth like you!”

Damien’s emotional crisis continued to grow worse with the more distressing distractions heading his way. If it continued to happen then he would be back where he was last night.

‘I didn’t do anything. How come they choose to blame me without any real explanation. This isn’t fair!’

Now was a better time than ever for Damien to understand that nothing in this world was fair. It’s a hard concept for younger minds to acknowledge, but with this experience he would come closer to understanding that the world was only fair by being as unfair as it could be to everyone. At this moment the old man started to send out waves of attacks in the means of water tendrils to slow and capture Damien. The moment the tendrils touched him, they boiled up into harmless steam. The old man instantly changed his game plan and closed in to stop him in close combat.

The instant he reached within arms length to grab ahold of Damien was to be his most embarrassing moment in front of a crowd. Damien felt the unwarranted touch from another being and he complexly flipped.

“I said to leave me alone!”

Damien flicked his arm backwards effectively shoving him of his person, followed by a backhand to his body. It appeared to be a simple gesture with no real power behind, however the old man found out it was more than that. Damien’s hand carried more than enough strength to knock out several of his teeth v while sending him flying back to the crowd of anticipating townsfolk. The hill old man stumbled across the floor for what seemed to be a long time. He stopped spread out for all to see his disfigured face and body. With that final demonstration, they lost all hope of finding answers to what happened.

Damien vanished into the distance trying to find a spot where he could be alone. As for the town of Lias, they would come to see a time of peace. Crimes would basically disappear entirely and the dread of being outside at night was just a thing of the past. Eventually as time passed, more and more townsfolk realized the correlation between the mayor’s disappearance along with the crime. Although it was a majority thought, they still kept their mouths shut because they were scared it would come back to bite them.

Damien wouldn’t come to know of his impact on Lias nor that the Sevit character he forgot he slain was actually the mayor of Lias. It would be a while until these memories come back to haunt him in his sleep. In the meantime, Damien was recklessly rushing through the surrounding wilderness with no general direction. His head was overflowing with thoughts that made no sense in the moment, only because his Flame Core was shielding him tirelessly from the truth. Damien was ironically burning up with a fever causing him to see double and lose control of his balance.

Damien crashed like a meteor, skidding across the land into an unknown area. There he was rapidly losing consciousness as he was hyperventilating. There was nothing more he could do but to just let his body rest and take it from there. Once he passed out, the sounds of leaves rustling carried by and a dark figure appeared above Damien’s body.
