Belli Mundi - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Class Change

The squad returned to the garrison complex. The entire way back through the dungeon, and later from the dungeon portal back to the garrison, the squad is quiet. All of them are still in shock of surviving the battle on the third floor. They were this close to losing their lives to the fire ants. If the trainer hadn’t arrived when he did, they wouldn’t have survived for more than a few minutes longer.

The trainer led the squad back to the training area where Sam had met the rest of the squad yesterday. Then the trainer started to speak.

“I don’t think that I have to remind you youngsters that arrogance is not something that is suited for the legion. When we warn you that something is dangerous, then it is actually dangerous. Here in the legion we don’t say one thing and mean something else, we’re not into politics.”

The trainer takes some time to have a hard look at every single one of the recruits.

“Now that that’s out of the way, we can dismiss your dismal attempt at the third floor and go over your gains. Who among you has gotten to level ten?”

Immediately four hands go into the air as if they were in a classroom. It did remind Sam to check her own messages. Somehow during the dungeon she didn’t get any messages, and afterwards she was too much in shock to check them.

Immediately as she opened the messages, she was bombarded with lines of text.

“Sir, any advice on how to streamline the messages a bit? I can’t find anything in all this muck.”

“Right, you are like a newborn. All the children in Teglasia learn early on how to change their systems. I guess we need to take you through their lessons soon. For now you can just attempt to use your imagination on the notifications you have. Think on condensing the messages or something. I think that Kyla will help you out if you ask her. She might be a better teacher on the system than I am.”

No shit, anyone would be a better teacher than him, Sam thought. The only thing she got out of his explanation was that the name was notifications and not messages, and that she had to imagine how she wanted the things to appear.

After a few minutes she managed to make some sense of the notifications.

Log updated: Dungeon summary.

Killed 0 lvl 1 monsters.

Killed 0 level 2 monsters.

Killed 11 level 3 monsters.

Status updated: 3 Levels gained.

Status updated 3 Statpoints gained

Status updated: ’Experience gained.

Status updated: Extra Experience gained.

Status updated: Achievement gained.

Skill updated: [Short Sword] learned.

Skill updated: No skill slots detected. Select a skill to replace. Y/N.

Skill updated: Slash has gained 2 levels.

Skill updated: Stab has gained 1 level.

All that for just three levels? It took her several moments searching through the individual notifications before she found out that she had gotten only part of the experience she would normally get because she had been in a party. Even though she only got the experience from the monsters she herself had killed, even that had been only a trickle of what she would have gotten had she been alone.

Now that that had been taken care of, she looked around. Apparently everyone had been waiting on her to finish. With a small blush on her cheeks she asked: “What?”

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

“Well, we were all waiting on you to tell us what level you are now.” Xanthe answered.

“I managed to get three levels. I’m level five now.”

“Wow only level five? And you have no previous classes to help you out? No wonder you had it tough with those ants. At least we all had one previous class to give us ten extra statpoints.”

“Ten statpoints you say? That should be ten levels right. That means that you all changed at level 10?”

That was the point the teacher interrupted.

“Yes yes, most people only get a fighting class for their second class. Since those are easier to level, most people only go to level 10 with their first class. And for you information, levels one to ten gives one statpoint, eleven to twenty-five give two and twenty-six till fifty give 3. After that they give more, but no need to go into those right now.”

This made Sam realize that she hadn’t assigned her points yet. Quickly she gave a point to strength, vitality and endurance. During her fight she found out that it would be better to hit harder, and to have more energy to keep fighting. The point to vitality was so she wouldn’t die as quickly, which, as her injury pointed home, was pretty easy to happen in this world.

The trainer had more things to say.

“Now that that’s done, we need to go over your schedule for the next few days. Some of you have gotten to level ten already, they will present themselves here tomorrow for their first training as a recruit. It might take a few days before you get the class update, but once you do you will change your class to [Legionary recruit]. The others will keep leveling till they hit level ten. As you don’t have your full squad, the third floor of the dungeon is off-limits. Tomorrow you are to present yourselves with your squad mates here at the training field, after which you will proceed to the dungeon for some leveling. For now you are dismissed.”

Immediately after they were dismissed the squad members went their own way. Sam herself didn’t bother asking the others where they went in the evening. She went to the quartermaster to get herself some weapons and clothes.

Thankfully, she knew exactly where she had to go to get directions. She still had to return the short sword she had borrowed from the trainer, so she could ask him where to go at the same time. Thus she approached him and held out the sword.

“Sir, I still have your sword.”

“Oh right, that little thing. I hope you could get some use out of it. It’s a lot better than that little knife you had.”

“Yes sir, I actually wanted to know where I could get some equipment for myself. I can’t keep borrowing weapons and stuff every time I need to go into the dungeon.”

“Well, like I said at the entrance of the dungeon, we normally only give out the legionary equipment after someone’s class has changed. But in your case I think we will make an exception. I’ll bring you to the quartermaster myself and make sure he knows what to get you. Follow me, so we can take care of your needs immediately.”

Sam followed the trainer across the training fields and into one of the bigger buildings in the garrison.

“This here is our storage facility. The quartermaster has his office here, and he will find the stuff we requisition in the storage rooms behind him.”

Indeed there is a big counter with a single person that sits behind it.

“Ah sergeant Quincy, how nice to have you here again. How can we help you today? Maybe a new set of armor? I heard that you mostly use leather nowadays, but nothing can beat the real legionary armor, am I right?”

“Sorry quartermaster Sully, nothing for me today. I’m here with a new recruit that’s in dire need of some equipment. She hasn’t attained the [legionary recruit] class yet, but she’s a special case and I’ve decided that it would be better to give her something so she can survive till she can get the good stuff. So what’ve you gotten stashed away in the back that could be useful for a low leveled close combat fighter? “

“Hmm some non-legionary equipment, that’s not something that I give out every day you know. We could just give her the recruit stuff, but that would be favoritism wouldn’t it? How about a set of knives, and a sword for fighting, of would you prefer a spear?”

Sam hadn’t expected the question, so it took her a few moments to answer.

“I’ve gotten the short [sword skill] today, so a short sword would be great. Thank you.”

“Wait you’ve already gotten the skill? I only gave you that sword so you could get a preliminary feel for the weapon. That’s amazing, maybe we should go over your skills and stats some day soon. Sully, give her the knives, sword and a standard issue spear. If she gets skills this easily it would be a good thing to have her practice with the weapons that we use. She can switch them out with the normal equipment when she is issued it.”

“Sure Quincy, would you like me to give her a shield as well? I have some of those ‘knightly’ shield stored in the back. Some of those arrogant knights from Mirstone lost shoes kite shields in a card game a while back.”

“That would be great, then she can start working on the defense skills as well.”

Sam didn’t really get all the talk about weapons and skills. As far as she had seen there were only class skills and general skills, and hers were the offensive skills plus the two training skills that she had gotten a few days ago.

“Sorry sir, but what do you mean defense skills?”

“Ah right, I forgot again. We in the legion have made some skills a requirement for the advancement to a full soldier. In the frontline you need to stay alive and help your fellow soldiers, and you can’t do that without having the skills for them. Now you could use one or two of your precious class skills for that, but then our soldiers wouldn’t have the strength to kill some of the undead. Thus we have made a training regimen that will teach you some skills as general skills instead of class skills. You would have been told this after attaining your first legionary class. The shield should give you [shield wall] or a skill that’s close to it, but only after training with the rest of your squad. Having a skill with the shield would give you an edge though.”

So sully, for defense you can just give her some adventurers clothing and maybe some leather gear. That should be enough for now.

All in all, Sam walked away from the storage facility weighed considerably. It was also late in the evening, as the quartermaster didn’t let her go until she had tried on every single piece of equipment that he had gotten her. She even missed dinner, but luckily the quartermaster had his own dinner brought out to him and he ordered a bit more so the three of them could share.
