Belli Mundi - Chapter 45
Slowly Sam woke up. Even though everything went all right, it was still crazy stressful. They were asked to report to a legate directly! Even though the man had just been sitting there asking them some pointed questions, his aura was strong enough that she almost fainted on the spot. The strength the man extruded without trying was enough to know that he was easily the strongest person she had ever seen.
When they were finally let go to return to their barracks, she was forced by her teammates to check all of her notifications. Even thinking about that made her frown once more. They were the ones who told her how to disable some of the notifications, and now they wanted her to check everything each evening. That was just a waste of her time! Who cares how many monsters she fought during the day? It wasn’t like she couldn’t remember on her own, since there were only a few. And yes it had been nice to see the system’s name for those beetles, but Shadow Beetles, come on! She could’ve just guessed that one.
With a sigh she opened her status again, since the others would ask her if she did so this morning.

After giving the thing a quick check, she closed it again and made ready for the day. As soon as she stood up though, she noticed that she felt weak!
“What’s going on?” she asked herself.
Trying out some stretches, the feeling slowly went away, but it didn’t disappear completely.
Moments later Xanthe noticed Sam moving a bit awkwardly.
“Are you okay, Sam?”
“Yeah, I just feel a bit off today. I hope I didn’t catch an illness or something.”
“Ha, silly. You reset your class last night, remember? That means you lost your stat multiplier. It will take some time to readjust.”
“Uhh, stat multiplier?”
“You didn’t know? When you upgrade your class, you get a stat upgrade. For example your second tier class gave you a multiplier of one and a half.”
“No I didn’t know that.. I wonder why my status didn’t inform me.”
Status updated: Stat multiplier added.
“Never mind, it just added it. I guess I just have to keep learning things that you all take for granted.”
“Yeah, I didn’t even think about telling you. I mean, everyone knows!”
“Do you think that I’m back to being the weakest one on the squad?”
“Well, I think that you are a lot stronger than I am. And you’re probably stronger than Virgil as well.”
“But you have your magic.”
“Yes I do, don’t I”
And with that Xanthe happily left Sam to continue getting ready for the day.
A short while later the squad was working on their morning workout, when suddenly trainer Quincy arrived ahead of schedule.
“Gather around!”
When they all were standing at attention he continued:
“Your new orders have been decided. Both you and our second recruit squad will be assigned to centurion Aulus. Together with a veteran squad, you will be the base of his new century that will be tasked with the defense of the dungeon you guys found. Your duties will be as follows: One, you will move out to the dungeon and clear a path straight there. Two, you will defend the outpost that will be built there and make sure nothing happens to the people that will construct the damn thing. And three, you will continue your training under the centurion. That last one will mean that you will delve the dungeon there and sometimes here at Veritas, as well as whatever training the centurion thinks you need.”
At that moment, the centurion they met last night arrived on the field.
“My name is Aulus, centurion Aulus for you. I was a centurion in the first cohort of the fourth legion, before I was reassigned to babysit you recruits. You will follow me out the east gate, where my squad of veterans is waiting. I hope for your sake that the second squad of recruits is on time, otherwise you will share in their punishment. I believe that discipline is key to forging a new soldier and I will act on that. For now our orders are clear and we will cut a path to the new dungeon.”
Shortly after his speech, the centurion led Sam’s squad off the field and towards the gate. Halfway there they were intercepted by the other recruits and their trainer, who were almost running to catch up with them. Without a word they fell in behind Sam’s squad and tried to catch their breath.
Soon they exited the city, and found a squad of soldiers standing at attention waiting for them. Each and every one of them stood rigidly at attention under the burning sun. They almost looked like statues of textbook soldiers.
Their centurion marched them right in front of the soldiers before calling a halt.
“Look at these men. Now those are real soldiers, ready to fight at any given moment. Soon you weaklings will be just the same. NO SLACKING in my century. Now let’s move and cut us a path towards our destination. Remember to keep up with the pace, or you’ll wish you were on latrine duty.”
