Belli Mundi - Chapter 32

Belli Mundi Chapter 32

Two days later the dungeon break was still going on. Thanks to Sam’s suggestion, there were dozens of high leveled people that were helping to hold back the monsters.

Right now they were at the twenty-first floor, of which the emergence of monsters was already slowing down. There should only be a few floors left, and then everything could go back to normal.

What wouldn’t go back to normal though, was the lives of the recruits. This disaster had shown the higher-ups that they would need at least some units on stand-by. As they already had two squads of recruits at the garrison, they would make the foundation of a duty century at the garrison.

Since the recruits were way out of their league with the emerging monsters, they had already been sent to start building a new camp just outside the city walls. With the dungeon having its own fortifications, it was determined that the on-duty century would need its own camp. Having them staying inside the city garrison might be more comfortable for them, but it would take too long to get to the dungeon. For now though, the recruits still had their own rooms in the garrison, until they had made the new camp livable.

Since this would be a good learning experience for the recruits, they had been assigned one of the retired soldiers from the Fourth Legion. He would lead them while they would dig the ditch, using the earth for the earth wall. After that they would have to go to the forest to get their own wood for the palisade, the gate and the watch towers. With only one century to be stationed here, one gate would be enough for the small unit. The defenses also wouldn’t be used to defend against an organized attack, but only to keep the monsters outside. At the most it would need to hold against a goblin attack. For the rest they could retreat to either the fortifications of the dungeon, or in the worst case scenario to the city itself.

When the defenses would be ready, they would then start on the living quarters. With the wildlife having its own system, it would be dangerous to start building those before an adequate defense had been established.

Sam and the others though, didn’t know anything about this. The only thing they knew, was that they had to report at the training field for a different assignment. This was no surprise, as they hadn’t been used to help out at the dungeon for over a day. At first they were used as a reserve unit, but when enough help had arrived and the monsters were growing stronger and stronger, they were told that they could work on their formation training on their own.

“What do you think this new assignment will be?” Sam asked Jasper.

“Not sure, but with most of the rest of the garrison at the dungeon it can’t be all that big. No way that they would send us to deal with important stuff if they can just wait for another day before they can send someone with real authority.”

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

“Yeah, but there might be something that’s time sensitive that we could do?”

“We’ll know soon enough.”

At that moment the other training squad arrived at the field.

“Look who’s there! It’s the little worms we beat a while ago.”

This time it was George who couldn’t keep silence.

“You idiots, of course you beat us. You have been training and leveling for years!”

“So? That just means that we’re way better than you.”

“No it just means that you’re a pack of old goats!”

“Why, you little..”

Apparently the big man shouting back at George didn’t appreciate being compared to a goat. But before he could close in on George, a new arrival made himself known.

“So you’re the useless pieces of shit that I have to coach? I see that I have a lot of work to do still.”

“Who are you?” The leader from the second squad asked.

“I’m retired soldier MacGregor. I’m the one who will coach you on your next assignment.”

“Retired as a lowly soldier? Not even a centurion? What a joke! You’ll be almost as useless as those newbies over there.”

The soldier didn’t look all that much impressed, and kept his cheerfulness.

“Great, now we have the first volunteer to dig the latrines. How about you guys lead the way out of the city so I can keep an eye on you. Meanwhile I will start to get to know the first squad of this little century.”

“What, we’re a century? And what do you mean with them being the first squad?”

“Yes, you guys will be the new duty century, and we will go and actually build the complex where you will be stationed. Now start moving!”

Soon after that MacGregor had them marching out of the northern gate, but instead of going to the right to go towards the dungeon, he had them moving to the left. With none of them knowing what their actual assignment was, they just followed his directions. Soon though, they had walked all the way around the city and they could already see the dungeon fortifications in the distance.

“Why the hell did we just walk around the city? We could’ve just gone straight to the dungeon!”

“Who said anything about going to the dungeon? The new camp will be right there, just south of the dungeon.”

“Then why didn’t we go through the east gate?”

“Because then I couldn’t have seen your marching skills.”

“…”

“Doesn’t matter why I had you march around the city. The point is that this is where we’re going. Now, squad one, you have the east side, squad two, you have the south side. I know you have learned the regulations for setting up a camp, so you can start on digging the ditch. We won’t finish this camp today, we won’t even finish the ditch today. So tomorrow you will report right here instead of at the training field.”

“Hey, we didn’t sign up for this crap. We signed up to go and fight the undead.”

“The fourth won’t fight the undead for some time yet. So nothing lost, right?”

“No, we were promised that we would be fighting soon after signing up. That trainer chick promised that we would only stay here for a month tops. After that we would move to the fifth legion to go and fight.”

“Isn’t that interesting. Luckily for you, that’s a promise that she won’t be able to keep. If you guys went there this soon after joining a legion you would be killed within days. Now, you can either start digging, or you can be dragged to the brig by me!”

“I’d like to see you try! We joined as an elite squad, not as some nobodies like that so called ‘first’ squad.”

Seconds later the loudmouth from the second squad was laying on his back, having been knocked out by one punch from the retired soldier.

“Great, that was that. Now I’ll give the idiot one more chance, so you guys wake him up and get to work. I see that first squad has already started! Now you have to catch up to them.”
