Belli Mundi - Chapter 35
An hour later Sam and her squad were making their way through the forest on the northern side of the city.
Luckily second squad wasn't with them, as they were sent in a different direction. That meant that they didn't have to hear all the stupid insults that the members of that squad kept whispering.
With the entire squad in a good mood, they made good progress towards the area they were assigned to today.
Soon after entering the forest, Sam realized that without them needing to defend the other squad, it was a lot easier to stomp through the forest.
With their squad in formation, they made short work of the first few goblins. Even when there was a group of four or five goblins, they didn’t stand a chance against the squad.
With Sam still being the weakest, at least they thought so since they hadn’t been able to fight against each other for some time now, she was positioned at the back. Even so, this was an important position, most of the pressure would certainly be on the front with some lesson pressure on the sides. At the back, they figured that there would only be the sporadic monster that would try to ambush them.
After an hour of making their way through the forest, they still hadn’t found anything they couldn't handle with ease. Even the sporadic boar didn’t stand a chance. Now that had multiple fighters close together, these could lock their shields together to combine their strength. Thus they could easily withstand even the charges of the boars.
The dozen or so groups of goblins also didn't stand a chance. The small creatures were more of a nuisance than a threat now that the squad could fight in formation. Yesterday they did have some trouble, but only because they had to fight multiple goblins at the same time without the others to cover their flanks. Now, with their teamwork it only took moments to dispatch a group of goblins.
After they had covered almost half of the area they were assigned, they finally found something interesting.
While crashing through the underbrush, they suddenly found themselves on de side of a small clearing. In the middle stood a huge mushroom, surrounded by smaller ones.
“Wow, look at that! That thing has to be one of those useful resources that our trainer talked about.”
Without hesitating Leophon ran into the clearing.
“Wait you idiot! You don’t know what that thing is!”
Immediately Jasper ran after Leophon, with the others only half a step behind.
The moment that Leophon came close to the mushrooms, the largest one, which stood about half as high as Leophon himself, suddenly puffed out a huge cloud of spores. Within moments the entire squad was covered in the stuff.

The moment they were hit, everyone started coughing. Leophon, who was of course the closest to the mushrooms, even fell down. Unfortunately for him, he was close enough to fall directly onto the smaller mushrooms. These also started to puff out smaller clouds of spores.
Jasper was able to fight through the coughing fits, and managed to grab onto one of Leophon’s legs. Slowly he started to drag the big man away from the mushrooms.
When the others saw what he was doing, they started to help. Luckily none of the others were as affected by the spores as Leophon, which meant that they soon exited the clearing. The moment they exited, their coughing also started to abate.
“Well, now we know why that clearing is there.” Sam deadpanned.
“Yeah, I don’t think anything could survive within range of that thing. Let’s just write down its location and be done with the damned thing. Let the higherups decide what they want to do with it.”
While Sam and Jasper discussed what they should do with their find, Xanthe suddenly mentioned something else:
“Guys, check your status. Those spores did a number on my health. Make sure you guys are good to go and keep an eye on it to see if you’re still affected.”
The moment Xanthe mentioned this, the others got those blank faces of people who checked their status.
Sam however, had her mind go blank. With everything that had happened the lately, she had completely forgotten that the system was a thing in this world.
Soon the others gave the all clear, at least everyone except Sam.
“Sam, what about you?”
“Well, I guess I’m going to take a bit longer.”
“What do you mean?”
“The thing is, you know how I came from a world without the system right?”
“Yeah, so?”
“I guess I kinda snapped when the dungeon broke. When we had to fight for our lives immediately after exiting, I somehow managed to disable every notification I got.”
“Wait, you mean that you haven’t even looked at your status once since then?”
“Not only that, I had even forgotten that the system was a thing here.”
The others could only stare in disbelieve at her, and some of their mouths even fell open.
With them still in shock, Sam finally opened her status, and immediately she was bombarded with messages. It took her several minutes to compress everything to something even remotely readable.
