NL Chapter Two: Stange Companion

NL Chapter Two: Stange Companion

Foothills, Piedmont, Flowers! she laughs and picks a few, stumbling across a skeleton of some long or not so long dead adventurer. She looks at it, a little sad about its fate. A short search finds all its gear is beyond help, but she does find a couple of blackened silver coins, so she takes them at least.

She continues down the hills and try's to stay in a good mood. Skipping and singing little songs to herself. Only one other time does a demon threaten her. It proved immune to lightning, not so much to a twister that threw a tree at it. It squished pretty well.

After that she decided to try another trick. She spun out her cloak and pulled the twister around her, encouraging it to lift her in to the sky. Laughing she rose and flew over the tree's. Not as fast as lighting, but at least now she can see where she is going. Also Much faster than walking. She does see a few more demons, but none see her and more importantly none seem to be able to fly.

The first night in this world finds her still in the woods, so she decides to try and sleep in a tree. She read of this many times. Claims that it is safer than sleeping on the ground. She learns very quickly that it is not something that one can just Do. She found a good wide branch, not To far from the ground but high enough that most animals would not easily reach her. Comfort was not possible, and turning over in her sleep, well hitting other branches was no fun and the ground hurt when she landed on it, eventually. After the 3rd time falling down, and bruising herself up on the stupid branches, not to mention rocks. She just retrieves her pack and goes in search of a cave or the like. Grumbling about stupid stories and their dumb ideas. She stumbles through the dark wood, catching her cloak on scrub, bushes, and other things. Ends up swearing at them and the tough cloak. She tries, unsuccessfully to tie the ends of the cloak through the straps of the backpack, only to have them slide free as she walks. She is near tears when a voice speaks out of the dark, "My you are a pitiable little girl." there is humor in the female voice. "I first heard you I thought you were a demon or the like, but I see your just some clueless adventurer." she is laughing at Nyesha. Nyesha turns about, not in the mood for whatever it is, "I am not clueless, well not completely." she mutters more to herself than the voice. The voice snickers, "Your running around a demon infested wood in a cloak too large for you, carrying a pack made for someone half again your size and wearing no clothing. I think that's pretty clueless. You pretty much scream 'hey monsters free meal'." more snickering, which ends abruptly when Nyesha lights up her fingers with lightning, "I am Not clueless and I am Far from defenseless." She turns, more and spots the gleam of her lightning off eyes hiding behind a tree, she ups her wattage and slowly she makes out the appearance of a tall (to her) blonde woman wearing green and tan jerkin with long sleeves, but can't make out more. She has a smirk on her lips and amusement in her eyes.

"Ok so not so defenseless, but still under prepared to be wandering alone in this region."

Nyesha shrugs, "Was not given much of a choice on that. I got sent out with just the cloak to start with. Ag the Warrior led me to the pack and I scrounged some other stuff during my walk." The woman nods, "Gods can be helpful when the whim takes them." she cocks her head to the side, "Who would send you out here so unprepared ?" Nyesha shrugs and points up, "Command of the Sky Lord." she sighs. The woman nods, having heard of tribes sending their odd ones off to face the world under the guise of some gods 'word'. Normally she tends to kill those fools, but this one, she has real power not just strange looks or the like. Whether her gifts are magic or actual gifts of the gods, she can't say. But this deserves looking in to. She has little use though for those who think the Gods will provide much of anything. She knows they are real, but does not trust them for much of anything and can't stand those who swear by them overly much and really hates those who blindly follow such.

"So how were you 'Chosen' ?" she ask, curious despite herself.

Nyesha sighs, "Woke up in a pool of water, wearing only this cloak with lightning all around me on the side of a mountain." points back to the Land of the Gods, "Hard not to figure things out from there."

THAT stops the woman. She has Never heard of that happening and is not sure what to make of it. She slowly nods, "How about before that ?" Nyesha shrugs, "I was praying actually, well a little more complex than that. Full magic calling, see I was born sick and was desperate, so I decided to try prayer. Someone answered and here I am, Healthier than I have Ever been and charged with Lightning." Holds her hands apart, allowing a stream of pure lightning to arc between her hands. "The down side is demons are now hunting me cause I can do this stuff. Pisses them off when the gods grant someone power it seems."

The woman nods, yeah that would do it alright. Demons don't need much of an excuse to go after people, but if one show's genuine god given power, they bend over backwards to find and kill such. She is not sure Why the gods would do such to a person. Damning them in such a fashion. Though thinking on it, she is damned to and probably for allot longer. The Gods did it to her to, forever damned because some God chose her to serve them Forever. She hates gods for all the selfish things they do.

She thinks then comes out from behind her tree, "So the price for becoming healthy is to be demon bait ?"

Scratching her head, "As Ag put it, Gods kill Demons, Demons kill Gods, endless war between the forces of Creation and Destruction. People like me are foot soldiers with the potential to become gods if we survive. Not much for motivation really. I like the powers and all, but have little interest in becoming a god truthfully. From what I have seen the ones who get that far are not much as gods go. Bound to certain locations and unable to leave them. Except via portents, visions and such. Sounds more like a prison sentence to me." The woman nods, "Yeah that's about it alright. The Big gods are all for making servant gods, but then lock you out of the good stuff. Keeping the real power to themselves." Nyesha thinks about it and what she knows of the 'gods' of the bronze and early iron age and nods, "Yeah that sounds about right. Don't get me wrong I got nothing against helping people with my powers and such, but I really don't want the rest of their gig."

"Gig ?" the woman ask confused, Nyesha sighs, "Sorry. Slang term, I use allot when I don't think about what I am saying. Hm, gig, another phrase, as a slang word it means a job, usually for musicians or entertainers. I am not sure what the original use of the word is. Though I have heard it used in fishing slang to as a way to work lures." the woman shakes her head, well that was a new one. She nods, "Well ok then. If you are interested in a safer place to rest I have a small camp in a cave near here. Mind you I am not the first nor probably the last who has likely used the place, going by the number of bones around it. I suspect in winter it's a large animals den. But it's late spring now so the creature is probably gone looking for a mate or the like." Nyesha nods and follows, "Just one thing, keep your teeth to yourself, you try and bite me and I will light you up." The woman turns and looks at her, "What are you talking about ?" Nyesha shrugs, "You give off no body heat. I can See body heat. Most like me can in some degree or another. Meaning your either an immortal or a vampire. Blood drinker in short." She comes to a stop, "Your so desperate for shelter you would knowingly follow me to it ?" Nyesha shrugs, "I have known a few nice blood drinkers in my time. Not all are raving monsters bent on sucking the life out of everything."

The woman starts then laughs and nods, "Good point. Ok, I can see that. My name is Freyah by the way." The halfling nods, "Nyesha, pleased to make your acquaintance"

After several minutes of silent walking Freyah notes Nyesha saying something over and over, Freyah watches her lips move, "Your trying to recall what my name means aren't you. Well it's a made up one so forget it." Nyesha shakes her head, "It's Northman actually, has a couple meanings, In the Norse language it means Mistress or Lady in the Celtic language it means strong woman, Smart, restless and in tune with herself." Freyah looks surprised, "Really ? I thought my father just made it up."

She thinks, "So what does your name mean ?" Nyesha smiles, "Rain" Freyah looks at her as she maneuvers around a prickly bush, "Rain, just rain ? Huh, I got the better name." Nyesha smiles, "I picked out my own name actually. I did not like the one I was born with so I changed it."

Freyah stops and looks at her, "You can do that ?" Laughing, "Of course. Helps if there is no one around who knew your old name though. It's called Re-Inventing yourself. Want to change your life, start by giving yourself a new name. Something you like, something with a good meaning. Rain fits me, Rain can be good and helpful, makes plants grow and provides water for the earth. Or it can be bad, as to much can cause Floods. I can be nice and helpful or a storm to ravage that which upsets me."

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Freyah nods, "Ok I did not consider that. In that light, good name." Nyesha nods, "It's also fun to say NE SHA!" hehehe. Freyah grins and shakes her head, "ok there is that to. Your just one of those naturally happy people aren't you ?"

Nyesha sighs, "Not really, but I am working on becoming that way. Better a happy person than one that is angry at the world all the time for the unfairness of it all. I am working on it. Got a lot of anger in me though. So I take that out on the Demons who get in my way."

Freyah decides to change the subject, "Tell me what is the difference between an Immortal and a vampire ?" Nyesha shrugs, "Diet is the same as are some of the powers, but Immortals can walk in the sun whereas vampires catch fire if they are struck by sunlight. They have other weaknesses to, Holy places, people and such repel or actually cause them harm. Immortals are not so affected."

Freyah nods. Nyesha continues, "Some of the older ones also portray themselves as gods. Partly to help them feed easier and partly cause it's a big boost to the ego to have people enslave themselves to you I imagine."

Freyah comes to a dead stop, "Wait. These beings, the old ones ? They are not really Gods ?" Nyesha shakes her head, "They have allot of power and as such to a mortal can seem like one and some put it out they are. There are 3 in Egypt for example. Set their god of Evil, Isis goddess of Magic and Fertility and Healing, and Osiris, god of the dead. Isis is a good one though, she goes out of her way to help people. Whereas Set is all about destroying everything and hurting people, corrupting the good, that sort of thing."

Freyah screams and beats the hell out of a tree. Nyesha 'eeps' and vanishes in a flash of light.

That Bastard was Not a God, never was a god! He did this to her, convinced her she was Less than him, would always be nothing more than a servant to HIS power cause He was a god and She was once Mortal. If she ever found him she was going to rip off his head, spit in his face, then bury it in a giant ant hill or the like. She tears in to the tree till her anger is spent. After she calms she looks around for the small informative woman, then around again and then sighs, throwing her head back. She went and scared off the child. Looking up she sees a strange cloud, it is covered in tiny lightning strikes and seems almost to be waiting for something. Freyah shakes her head as that is a stupid thought.

She looks around again then hoping the girl did not run to far off, "NYESHA! Hey Girl you out there ? It's OK I am not mad at you!" she is doing a slow spin trying to figure out where the girl went when she Feels more than sees a bolt of lightning coming. She Dashes behind her target tree, peeking out from behind it. The blast hits several yards away from that strange cloud, which is now gone, and Nyesha is standing there. Pack and all, staring at her with wide eyes, "You scared me." she states simply.

Freyah stares back with equally wide eyes, then looks up and see's the cloud is gone, then back at her, "You turned in to a cloud ?"

Nyesha looks blank, "I did ? Huh ? Well that was unexpected. I just knew you went mad, started attacking a tree, so I made myself scarce."

Freyah nods, "I saw a cloud with little tiny lightning bolts all over it. Then you appeared out of it and now it's gone."

Nyesha checks herself over and is delighted to find her pack and gear made it through the changes unharmed. "Neat" she says happily, "Ok that is good to know. Anyway why were you trying to kill the tree ?"

Freyah, still wide eyed, "What you told me about those false gods. All these years I have been angry at the Gods for what they did to me, only to now learn that he was Not a god at all, just some immortal Ass who cursed me to this existence for his own amusement. I ever find him I am going to tear him apart and bury his pieces in separate places." She raves. Nyesha nods, "Ah, I see. One question before I return to a cloudy state, do you fry in sunlight ?" Freyah takes a calming breath, "No, the sun has no real power over me. Why ?"

"Ag told me that Immortals can sometimes eat or drink normal fair. Thought you would like to know. I am going to go hide now." Freyah calls out, "Wait! Please don't go. You’re the first person to talk to me that actually knows things and did not try to kill me when you learned what I am."

Nyesha considers then nods, "Just no more 'rawer' claw claw claw, please." Freyah smiles, "I will try. Just what was done to me makes me SO angry." Nyesha nods, "I can understand that. You did not ask for this and it was forced on you. Me I asked, well maybe not this specifically, but I sure got answered."

Freyah nods, "Yeah. I can understand that. Back then I thought it was a blessing, that I would be with him forever, that he loved me. But he got bored with me, tossed me aside and moved on. Told me to have a nice life or jump in a lake of fire, he did not care which. I was stuck like this and forced up here to the edge of the world by other older ones cause I was competition for food and resources. Allot of us younger ones end up here on the fringe cause of them."

Nyesha nods, "Ag wondered about that to. Does explain allot. So what do you eat ?"

Freyah shrugs, "Animals, the occasional mad man, adventurers. More of that last sort than you would think for this part of the world. I try to limit myself to the stupid ones though. The smarter ones I tend to convince to head south and ignore those so called 'gods of the villages'. Most of them are like me anyway. Ones who found a place and people to support them. The better ones help the people, the worst ones just take and make up things they supposedly do." Nyesha nods, "I know the type. I refer to them as Highly Combustibles. Meaning they Burn nicely." Freyah snickers, "good name" she agrees. "You don't seem to have a problem with me eating people."

Nyesha shrugs, "Some people need to be eaten, like Fundamentalist and false gods or hero's. A fundamentalist is a religious fanatic that also tries to tell the gods what they think or should think."

Freyah nods, "My favorite food actually." Nyesha smiles and nods, "Good. I HATE those types with a passion. These days I would probably introduce them to the business end of my lightning." Without raising an arm or anything a bolt leaps from Nyesha and fries a small spying demon. Turning it to flaming dust in a second. Freyah makes note of that. It's good to know how dangerous potential allies are.

Nyesha is shaking her hands, "How is it I am partly made of lightning yet I still get static shocks." she mutters to herself, not realizing that her 'static' just killed a demon.

Freyah, "What is 'static' ?" she ask mildly confused. Nyesha answers in a distracted tone, "Ever rub her hand over fur in the winter and get a jolt ?" Freyah nods, "Many times." Nyesha looks up at her, "That is static, it's basically a little tiny lightning bolt. Annoying little tiny lightning bolts to." Freyah smiles and thinks that this girls idea of 'little tiny' and lightning is a touch mad, but not going to argue the point for fear of the bigger lightning's she can make. A realization comes to Nyesha, "You were out hunting when you found me weren't you ?" Freyah nods, "But not to worry, it's boring out here so it's either go hunting or stare at the cave walls. I don't have a lot of other needs anymore. Though someone to talk to is nice."

Nyesha just nods and continues to follow along. The cave is little more than a deep narrow hole with an old oak growing over the top and some kind of bush partially covering the entrance. In the dark she would have missed it and even in the day it would be hard to find. "Thinking on it what most people need is food and shelter, pretty much everything else is extra or comfort."

Freyah nods, "Pretty much. I got a few nice bits of clothes. Home is where ever I lay my head and food is whatever is unlucky enough to cross my path most of the time." Nyesha is giving the narrow opening a wary look.

Freyah notices, "Not to your liking ?"

Nyesha, "I am a halfling, we spend part of our lives underground, but in nice burrows. This is not a nice burrow and really I never been one for the wild. I like my creature comforts, warm fires, comfy beds that sort of thing." Freyah sighs and nods, "I miss those myself. But not much I can do about it. Been forced out and north and up here you got mad people living in little squat huts who treat everyone like potential thieves or murders, including their neighbors. They trust the gods as much as they do the demons in most of these lands.

I personally would Love to be able to go back south, to the nice lands with the houses and home fires and warm beds. But every time I try the ones who live in those places raise the people against me and drive me out again."

Nyesha nods and thinks, "You could travel with me. If you like. You can help me with company and telling me about these lands, cause I am from very far away and know squat." Freyah, "Squat ?"

"Nice way of saying 'shit' nada, nothing, nil, I can keep going for a word or two if you like." the little woman answers, Freyah is chuckling, "no I get it, that's ok. I will have to think on it. It's not an easy thing to decide. Granted your probably one of the more Dangerous things out here though and I have a rough idea of where the towns are, but I have been here for years and though I am not happy here I am afraid to go back."

Nyesha nods, "Well before you were alone. Now you are not. But it's up to you. I have my own selfish reasons for you to come along."

Freyah nods, "You want a travel companion, though you are capable on your own. Right ?"

Shrugging, "Yeah, partly. I Could travel anywhere in the world very quickly if I chose to, but I have no destination in mind and no idea what's out there. So talking to you helps me learn about the world, cause truthfully I am like a new born in the world. Granted an extremely powerful and dangerous babe, but still a babe. Never been all that far from home before. Not that I have one to go back to anymore."

Freyah blinks at that, "Why ?" Nyesha makes a face, "Last I saw of my house, it was on fire after a tree fell on it during a massive storm. It's ironic the gods gave me power over the storm. I wonder about their sense of humor, you know." Freyah, who still does not trust the gods overly much, nods. "Fickle things gods." she states. Nyesha nods in agreement, curling up in the small yet strangely comfortable 'cave'.

Freyah starts to ask another question only to be answered by soft snores from the tiny exhausted woman.
