5. First Blood

Roy slowly climbed on top of the tree. He has climbed trees before, but just thinking of dropping from the height he was in, made him anxious. After a grueling hard work for 10 minutes, he reached the top.

Roy knew what his priorities were before he even started to climb the tree. He had to locate other individuals in his tutorial zone first. It is not a nice thing to be alone in a strange place with monsters everywhere.

Finding a supply of food and water was his next priority. He can use his class-exclusive [Spark Ring] to start a fire. Only one spell, [Spark], was embedded in this ring. Although it was mostly useless, if it helps in building a fire for Roy, then he was more than happy.

And lastly, he needed to level up ASAP. The more time he stays in Lvl 1, the more his possibility of survival decreases. Roy has read enough LitRPGs to know that, for a beginner, finding a good hunting spot to farm some levels is really important. With these objectives in his mind Roy started to properly observe the area he was in. And to his dismay-

Roy was utterly shocked when he realized where he was. To begin with, he was unable to spot any human presence for miles. He found only a single group of people and they were nowhere near where Roy was. Good news was that he was able to locate a water source really soon. He could see a lake situated directly across the clearing. He needed to go there soon to collect some water from there. Roy did not know if the water was edible or not, but just to be sure, he would boil the water and then drink it.

But the main problem was the monster problem. Roy had been basically dumped inside a monster industry. Just a mile left from his position he was a tiger which was almost 50 feet tall. Giant birds and their extended family were also on the list. Their nest was kind of far away. But Roy felt confident in saying that the bird can come to his location within minutes. So, no bothering the birds.

These two monsters were the most threatening ones in Roy’s eyes. There was also a pack of dire-wolves, a big bear, a huge python and so many more. It was as if it were a zoo; A zoo with less points for cute and more points for life threatening. Roy was hesitant for a moment, contemplating if he should really go out to hunt or not. But he immediately discarded that idea. He needed to get stronger. Staying alive like a cockroach won’t help him that much. So, the idea of not hunting for level should not even be I his mind.

The only spot that was not too much dangerous was the goblin village he had seen in the South. But Roy was not dumb enough to just rush in just because they were three feet tall green monsters. Also, as it is a goblin village, so there must be a goblin warrior, goblin shaman and of course the goblin chief. He really did not want to meet these three individuals right now.

He needed a plan. Although the possibilities of things not going according to plan was extremely high; a general outline won’t hurt him. So, Roy made a rough outline of what to do and set off towards the goblin village to scout it properly.

Roy stayed in the outskirts of the village and hid inside a bush. His main objective now was to observe how the village functions. Roy continued observing the village till nightfall. And by this time, he has already got a pretty good idea of how it operates.

The outskirts of the village are regularly patrolled by guards who roam around with a dagger in their hands. They are divided into several groups and each group consists of three guards. Which was a huge problem for Roy. If he failed to kill a group within a short amount of time, then they will alert the others and call higher level members of the village. With that in mind Roy quickly formulated a plan inside his head. It was the time to act.

Roy stayed hidden in another bush which was on the less popular patrol route. He heard some light footsteps coming his way. He quickly stopped breathing so as not to alert the goblin group. Roy had already unsheathed both his swords. For assassinations using a single weapon was usually seen, but, his [Dual Wielding] gave him an extra bonus for using weapon on both hands. And Roy would not mind getting some bonus.

Just when the group passed by Roy’s position, Roy rushed towards them. With adrenaline pumping inside his vein and mana circling around his weapon, Roy swung his sword. To Roy’s greatest pleasure, both the swords hit the exact spot Roy wanted. Roy felt how his swords cut through flesh and bones alike with unbelievable precision. Maybe the simple swords were not bad after all.

It has not yet been a second since Roy emerged from the brush, and two severed goblin heads were already shot upward. There was a flash of surprise in their eyes and a rush of blood around their necks. Seeing this sight, Roy felt something real after a very long time. Excitement filled him. Roy was thrilled to see that his strategy was working. But it was still not over

By this time, the remaining goblin realized what had happened. It knew that it had no chance against the humanoid assailant. So, it tried to do the only thing that it could do; Scream. But Roy was no pushover. He had already considered this possibility. So, the moment, the goblin opened its mouth to scream, Roy stabbed one of his swords towards its throat. The stab in the throat was not nearly enough to kill it. But it worked fabulously to impair its voice. Roy would’ve preferred to go for the decapitation. He liked to solve his problems as quickly as possible. But he knew very well that, if he went for the head, then he would be too late to stop its scream.

Roy looked at the goblin which was convoluting and trying its best to stop the bleeding from its throat and failing miserably, might I add. At that moment, Roy realized that this monster is fighting to stay alive. In a way, it seemed really human. But Roy did not feel an ounce of guilt. He was not a naïve boy, he knew very well that this was a world where only the strong survive.

And that is not something that has changed because of the system, rather it has always been the basic rule of nature. The strong survive, the weak perishes. It was true in every part of life. From basic high school to important international decisions. This was the rule of the world, where one strong person has the ability to destroy thousands of lives.

Before the system, the measure of strength was maybe done by money and authority. After the system, it has just changed form and turned into levels and skills. So, in a way nothing has truly changed other than the indicators of power.

And not far from today, Roy felt in his bones that he would need to fight with his fellow humans for obtaining greater power. He might also need to kill them. Roy was not comfortable with the idea of killing another human, but he knew very well that if situation required then he would kill another human in a heartbeat. Would he feel guilty after that? He did not know and it was not something he wanted to think about right now. It was future Roy’s problem.

Roy looked at the dying goblin again.

One swing of a sword later another goblin head hit the hay. But this one had a painful expression in its face.

Roy cleaned his swords against the dead goblin’s body. He had some blood on his face but luckily not on his clothes. After all, going to the lake in the middle of the night was not something he really wanted to do.

After contemplating over something for a second, Roy decided to leave the bodies here. This action might increase the possibility of goblins panicking and leaving the settlement, which would be a real problem for Roy. But if he guessed correctly, then the goblins would put stronger monsters to do the patrol. And stronger patrol meant better Exp. for Roy. Just thinking about it made him happy.

Roy quickly shifted his position towards another patrol route. After hiding inside a bush he opened his system messages.

[You have defeated a Level 2 Worker Goblin]

[You have defeated a Level 2 Worker Goblin]

After seeing his status updated, Roy had a big smile on his face. But he did not dare to become overconfident as he knew very well that it was just the beginning. Roy quickly closed his status screen as he heard some light footsteps. After unsheathing his swords, he took a deep breath and grinned lightly.

His hunt was still not done for the night.
