CHAPTER 1 - JAMIE THE SUMMONLESS

CHAPTER 1 - JAMIE, THE SUMMONLESS

“This better not fail.” Said Jamie. As he stared at the summoning circle, he made standing in the middle of it. He was using a room at the magic school to try to cast a summon. He was a third year student at the school. He had used all the best ingredients he could pay to use for it. “If this doesn’t work, I may end up blowing a blood vessel.” thought Jamie was sweating nervously. That had cost a huge fortune.

He was planning on a blood pack summons. He put a drop of his blood onto the circle. It briefly glowed to life then faded. Jamie began to chant as he cast his spell. The circle began to light up with a neon blue color. “This is it.” thought Jamie as he breathed in and out with excitement. As the light grew brighter Jamie felt a slight dullness in his head. At first it was just a buzz, but it intensified as the circle grew brighter. Jamie fell to his knees screaming in agony. “AGGGHHH” He cried out as the pain intensified.

Soon the room began to shake. Cracks began to appear around the summoning circle. The ceiling started to rain debris. The pain was too much for Jamie. “Must remain con..scouis.” Thought Jamie as he struggled with the pain, gritting his teeth. Soon overwhelmed by the pain Jamie fell unconscious. Right as the door to the room opened.

A group of mages ran in. One of them shouted. “We need to stop him before he kills himself or worse.” The magic was quickly countered by a few mages. “When will he stop trying to summon things?” One of the mages asked another. “I have no clue. This was his fifth failed attempt this week.”

The lead mage had a concerned look on his face as Jamie was being carried out on a stretcher. “That was the most powerful energy signal I have ever seen. If we hadn’t interfered, it would have left a crater a mile wide from all that mana buildup.” He spoke. “It is very sad he has so much mana build, but he can never summon anything.”

The mage finished talking to his colleagues. There was a long pause. “I hate to do this, but I am going to have to ban him from being a summoner.” Said the lead mage.

Jamie woke up in the school’s infirmary. “How do you feel?” A nurse said to Jamie. “I’m fine. Just have a killer headache.” He replied pulling himself off from the cot he was laying on. “Drink this.” The nurse said. “Once you finish that you can leave.” She spoke. Jamie drank the potion and headed for his car to go home.

He didn’t like to live on campus as other students bullied him. He was making his way to get to his car when he was approached by a group of mages. One of them was the lead mage for summoning classes. The man stood out among the rest of the group with his pointed ears. The elderly man was tall and pale. He had a forked white beard. His hair was gray from age but was silky smooth.

“Hello professor Johnson.” Said Jamie in a frustrated tone. Jamie looked over at the professor. The elf then approached Jamie and starred with him with his blue eyes.

“I don’t want to do this, but I have no choice but to ban you from being a summoner.” He replied.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

“WHAT!?” Said Jamie with a shocked expression. “You can’t do this.” Fussed Jamie.

“I am truly sorry, but your last attempt at summoning almost destroyed the whole school. If we hadn’t stepped in the entire area would have been nothing left but a mile wide crater…” Johnson replied with a sad tone.

Johnson then tried to comfort Jamie with good news. “On a positive note. Your mana output is off the charts. You can use your abilities in other fields. I know the magictech field pays very well for mana users with your mana level.” He replied. “I can put in a good word for you in that department with your mana output.” He stated.

“Thanks.” Sighed Jamie with disappointment as he walked from the group. He bid Professor Johnson farewell and walked away.

The sun was beginning to set as he continued to walk to his car. Other students around him snickered and teased him as he walked by. A few were gossiping as well. “Did he really screw up that bad to get a ban on summoning?” One student remarked with concern. Which was followed up by an insult. “I guess that's why they call him. Jamie the summonless. That human can never summon anything.” A few began to laugh at the comment. Another comment Jamie overheard was about what could have happened if his magic had failed. “Yeah, it was so bad from what I heard the mana flow was so great it almost turned the area into a crater.” A few of the students shuddered at the thought.

No one approached Jamie which revealed him. At least no one can harm me. I hate that I am human. He thought he was feeling more relaxed with a bit of disappointment. Attacking students at the school was an automatic ban and for their family in the future as well. The school didn’t tolerate violence.

The reason Jamie hated being human was because there weren’t many to begin with. He had learned in one of his history classes of recent events. Humans had just randomly appeared one day after a rift opened to a planet called Earth. The whole event led to worldwide changes for both worlds. The first century saw turmoil in both worlds after major wars were fought. Eventually, a truce was signed. Earth learned the magic process while Armaria was introduced to technology. Soon both worlds began working together to form magictech.

Amaria was stricter when I came to foreigners. Only humans who showed potential for magic were allowed to make permanent residence in the world. Others could vacation to the planet in limited numbers.

Jamie got to his car to head home. He got into his beat-up sedan he had bought from a junkyard back on Earth. The car was dinged and dented. “One of these days when I finally become a summoner. I can get a better car, but for now I must save.” He sighed and turned the key in the ignition as the car started. It stalled for a few seconds as Jamie kept turning the key in the ignition. Finally, his car hummed to life as it backfired. He put the car in drive as he hit the gas. It left a trail of smoke and smelly exhaust as he left the school parking lot. He put the car in the drive and headed for home. He jumped on the highway and just wanted to get home. As he drove, he began to daydream of all the different cool summons there were. “I really was hoping to summon a dragon. That way I could fly to school and work.” He sighed.

He was about halfway home when his phone rang. He pulled his phone from the cupholder and answered it. “Hello?” asked Jamie.

“Hey, Jamie, this is Brad we are short on hands tonight at the research facility for guard duty. Are you free.” asked Brad.

Jamie just moaned.

“They are paying double for this shift.” Brad said.

“I’ll be on my way.” Replied Jamie with a sigh.

“Thanks, see you soon.” Said Brad.

Jamie turned his car around to head to work now. He didn’t really like his job, but it paid very well. He needed the extra money for his summoner expenses. Now he was banned from summoning, but he couldn’t quit his job. He needed to pay for school. He was going to have to find other places to do his summoning.
