Chapter 8: The Night

Chapter 8: The Night

Apparently the stress of all the events was too great for Luntra as she refused to sleep. Meqro and me tried to reason with her:

"Why don't you want to fucking sleep?"

"I-I am just too a-afraid..."

"Just remember this: if you die then we will die as well. So, whether you like it or not, just sleep for our sake."

It truly felt as if Meqro and me were branches and Luntra was a tree. We could not let the tree die as the branches would die too. But what if the brances were strong enough to live on their own? That surely is a possibility but I should rely on it as the last resort option. As I was having thoughts, Meqro seemed to handle Luntra's stress just fine as she was slowly seeming more and more sleepy. I used this as an opportunity to check my profile on the right side:

Profile options

Bestiary [ ! ]

Home (Own A House To Unlock)

Map

Friends (Available at Level 3)

Clan (Available at Level 10)

I got rather curious about what profile options I had so I clicked on that tab:

Who Can See My Information: Friends & Clan Members

Time Format: 24 hours

NPCs' Levels: Off

Crafting Recipes: Only Those I Know

Notifications:

New Bestiary Entries: Off

Quests: Off

Friend Request: Off

Low HP: Off

Low SP: Off

Clan: Off

So that's why I did not see all of crafting recipes nor notified about completing some quest! I instantly turned quest notifications on but I did not bother trying to change crafting recipes. Although I did not think that seeing NPCs' levels was an option, so I turned it on. I thought I knowing if I hit low HP or SP was important so I turned those on as well. As for everything else, I let it be as it was. I also decided to check quest menu to see if something was changed and there was something that immediatly caught my attention:

Hidden Quests (1)

Escort The VIP

So it's far more important than I thought it is. I needed to know the details of that quest and there it was:

Escort The VIP

Keep the VIP alive until the VIP reaches a certain destination

Rewards: +500k EXP, 25k Gold, The Dragon's Claw (Spear), The Dragon's Claw (Sword), Dragon Scale Armor

My shock seemed to get Meqro's and Luntra's attention, both of whom opened their quest menu to see what I see. After some chat we found out that the rewards are the same for all of us.

"Whoever gave that quest must really value Luntra as useless as she is."

"I feel like going outside," Luntra stood up.

"Kuronto! I'll chop you in fine pieces and feed them to dogs!"

"Firstly, you can't shop me because of this entire system. Secondly, it might actually be a good idea to check out what it's like to be outside at night."

"If she dies I'll hang you upside down and make a food for whatever monsters are out there."

"Quit mumbling and protect her then."

Realizing the futility of his actions, Meqro went ouside with Luntra and me. Actually, he was the first to come out with his axe looking for potential targets. I followed him and Luntra was right behind me.

"Ah, so it's just zombies around," I sighed with relief.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

"They're still a fucking threat!" Meqro could not calm down.

"Then chop them up."

He really tried to redirect his anger towards me to the zombies that were pretty slow but they seemed somewhat tanky. I had NPCs' level thing turned on and I noticed them being level 3 to 7 zombies. As I was looking around I noticed 2 zombies of level 3 and 5 approaching Luntra and me.

"Go sleep in the shelter, we'll grind..."

"I might want to grind as well then."

"Only once you're fully recovered, kid."

"Hey! Don't treat me like..."

"Just shut up and go sleep already."

"Fine then," annoyingly sighed Luntra while walking into the shelter.

Zombies were getting closer so I pulled out my dagger and used water infusion. Basically I had around a minute of it. Thankfully zombies were slow enough for me to hit them in their head rather easily, but they were only getting 12 and 8 damage and it took me more than 10 hits to take them down. Thinking I was safe, I stopped using water infusion as I had realized the zombie was right behind me as I leaped backwards. I then took that zombie down without using any magic to regenerate it properly. But more and more zombies were appearing, really, making the whole situation more difficult. The sound of opened door and zombies getting cursed without Luntra going outside the shelter.

"You really haven't thought of that, have you?" her smug was an annoying one but her point was too valid to be opposed.

"Really Kuronto," Meqro seemed to also struggle a little bit, "and I thought she was going to sleep."

"Don't blame me, for fuck sakes. At least let's grind those zombies for some time."

This time we all got little carried away but were grinding the zombies successfully. Luntra's curse made the entire thing even easier as she was also getting experience.

"Wait, I remember now!" the realization of my dumbness hit me even harder than before, "if she levels up, her HP will fully recover!"

"So we just need to survive a night, don't we?"

"Apparently that's all it takes."

We all got a bit carried away but decided to rest in the shelter after hours of grinding.

"That was fucking awesome. I might want to repeat all that."

"Don't get carried away, Meqro. Just because we don't run out of breath like we used to doesn't mean you should be careless."

"Oh man, you still lost some HP, didn't you?"

"Doesn't matter. I still want to sleep to skip this night."

"Sleep then, Kuronto," said Luntra.

"Only if I'm sure that you're sleeping too. Can't afford to look away too much."

"That's so romantic."

"Would be if our lives didn't depend on yours."

"Aw, you can stop with flattery."

"Luntra, one of these days I'll remind you of this very badly," said Meqro.

"Alright, it was just fun messing with you. But I promise to not be a burden for you. Now I'm getting really sleepy."

And she really seemed to fall asleep. That made really glad and somewhat sleepy too.

"It's okay, I will be on guard duty."

Well, that really made things easier. Meqro could guard the entire thing and wake up shall the need arise. And not like many people would attack us. And the more such thoughts I had, the sleepier I got. Without even realizing that, I fell asleep.
