Strangely enough, Latia didn't come to play with Thomas for a whole month, leaving the boy alone with two strange beings. While Bahamut and Mars were by no means friends, both of them continued to teach Thomas everything they could, making the young boy quite knowledgeable for a young wizard.
Things went in the right direction as Thomas learned almost all of the basic spells used by the first-year students at Hogwarts, however, compared to them, he had more practical experience using them in different situations thanks to his two teachers as well as Latia that helped him in the past. For some reason though, Thomas found out, with Bahamut's help that someone was spying on him, and while that someone wasn't stronger than he was, he was by no means an inexperienced spy.
Thought it was strange, especially since he hadn't done anything noteworthy, or at least that's what the boy thought. Unknowingly to him, the day he awaken his sacred gear, the devil that made sure that he was in no danger, wasn't there just because he was a doctor. No, the man was also a double agent working for one of the people that belong to the so-called main family of the Astaroth clan. As cliché as it was, the sad truth was things like this are pretty common in the underworld and unfortunately for Thomas, this was just the beginning.
On the second day of the first week, after Latia once again came to play with Thomas, under Bahamut's instruction Thomas left his house, heading towards the nearest park. After he told his parents that he was going to buy some chips at the nearest supermarket, Thomas left the house, followed by the man that was observing him for the last month. Even though he was scared, Thomas knew that if that man keeps staying around his home, sooner or later his parents or even grandparents might be involved and he would never forgive himself if that ever happens. Months of training with both Irina and Latia made him realize just how weak he was compared to the real threats and ever since Mars start telling him some of his past stories, Thomas found out just how much there was to learn about everything supernatural.
It didn't take him long at all to reach the nearest supermarket and buy a bag of chips before heading towards the park, taking a longer route than necessary.
As Thomas walked through the park, he couldn't shake the feeling that something bad would happen and even though he knew that the spy was following him, he choose to push forward, no matter what would happen. He kept his guard up, ready for anything, and he was right to be cautious. Suddenly, he heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. Thomas immediately spun around, dagger in hand, and saw a figure emerging from the bushes.
It was the doctor that checked on him as well as the man who had been spying on him.
Thomas was startled when the man stopped in front of him, but he tried to remain calm.
"Who are you?" The boy demanded, pointing his dagger at the man.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
The spy didn't answer. Instead, he lunged at Thomas, trying to knock the magical dagger out of his hand. Thomas managed to dodge the attack, but the spy was fast and determined to take the boy out.
The two of them engaged in a fierce battle, casting spells back and forth. Thomas was holding his own despite his lack of more powerful charms, but he could tell that the spy was more skilled than he was. The longer he fought the more he couldn't help but wonder who this person was and why they were after him. What could a ten years old boy do to them for them to send a man to kill him?
As the fight dragged on, Thomas began to tire much faster than the spy. His spells weren't as strong as they had been at the beginning of the fight, and he knew that he was running out of energy. But just as he was about to lose hope, he felt a surge of power within him.
It was his sacred gear, awakening once again. While Bahamut was forced to send just a tiny bit of his power due to the heaven's system, that was still more than enough to reenergize Thomas.
Thomas felt a surge of energy as his sacred gear activated. He channeled that energy into a knockback jynx, and before he could stop it the charm become stronger than ever. The spy was caught off guard, and Thomas was able to disarm him and knock him to the ground before the man could react.
The man lay there, defeated as Thomas approached him cautiously, still holding his dagger at the ready. "Who are you?"
The spy hesitated, then finally spoke. "My name is Kael. I was sent to observe you by one of the families of the Astaroth clan."
Thomas was stunned. He had heard from Mars that the devils were not exactly a loving family before, but he had never thought that someone from the main family would take an interest in him.
"Why?"
Kael hesitated again, then finally spoke. "I don't know. I was just told to watch you and report back. I don't know what they want with you."
Thomas stared at Kael, trying to understand why someone would be interested in him. He knew that he was quite powerful for a ten year old soon-to-be wizard, but he didn't think it was enough to warrant this kind of attention.
"What do they want with me?"
Kael shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe they see something in you that the rest of us don't. Or maybe it's just a power play, trying to get leverage over another family. You are friends with someone from the branch family."
Thomas didn't know what to make of it all. He felt a mixture of fear and confusion. He had never asked for any of this, but now it seemed that he was caught up in a dangerous game that he didn't understand.
"What am I supposed to do now?" he asked, looking at Kael.
Kael shook his head. "I don't know. I guess you should be careful. The main family of the Astaroth clan is not to be trifled with. They have a lot of power and influence in the underworld. And if I were to be in your place I would probably cut all of my ties with the branch family and let things be."
Thomas shook his head, feeling a weight settle on his shoulders. He had always known that the world of magic and the supernatural was full of dangers, but he had never thought that he would be caught up in the middle of it all so soon.
"Thank you for telling me, Kael," he said, lowering his dagger.
Kael nodded, then got up and disappeared into the shadows. Thomas watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. He knew that he had to be careful now, more than ever. The Astaroth clan was watching him, and he had no idea what they wanted. But he was determined to find out and to protect himself, his friends, and his family from whatever danger might come their way.
