44. Quiet Day

Two days passed since I had raided the hideout. These two days were calm. Enemies pulled back temporary. Sadly darks that searched the hideout couldn't find anything.

I was on my way to the workshop of the rude smith after I received a message through one of the darks that the armour was finished. I banged his doors wide open as I couldn't contain my excitement about armour for my guards.

With a surprise, Toman dropped a heavy metal ingot on the stone floor, causing a loud bang, "What the..."

I interrupted Toman, "Show it to me."

With visible excitement, he moved towards a corner of the room where was something covered under the white blanket. He tore down whole a blanket. There was a sleek armour made out of black mirror-like polished metal and golden decorative engravings. As a last addition were purple glowing runes that were placed in a few places. Legs were protected by pants made out of plates and skirts like part with an opening at the front. It was like regular faulds on classical plate armour, but only a top part was made out of the metal. The rest was a long cloth with chainmail under it going down to the heels. I started to touch its smooth and shiny surface. It was even better in real than it was in a sketch.

"If you have any fukin problem with armour, you are short on luck as I don't care. You accepted my sketch so."

I brought myself out of trance, "So tell me, what enchants it has?"

With a face full of pride, Toman spoke, "Enchant to make it reshape itself to fit anyone as you requested. As for defence, there are enchants to decrease magical damage and suppress physical shocks. For utility, there is night vision and communication enchantment in the helmet. Boots also increases agility by 10%."

It sounded great, but something was missing. I kept looking at it and thinking.

"Ohh, I know what is missing!" I took the purple cape out of my inventory and fastened it to clips under shoulder protectors on the armour. There were no special enchants on the cape, but it finished the whole aesthetic of the armour. A grunt came from behind me, but I ignored it.

As a last check, I used [Analyze] on it.

Ding!

"Your behaviour is terrible, but you have done an outstanding job. I will remember this." I walked out of doors, not wasting my time on some chitchat.

My next stop was to visit an Aliford for another lecture on arcane magic, so I returned to the main keep. I was humming as I walked through the labyrinth of corridors to the Aliford tower.

Familiar doors glowing in a magical aura were in front of me. Without hesitation but carefully, I stretched my arm and knocked on them. I braced for the shock, but nothing came, so I breathed out in relief. A minute later, an unknown mage in a blue robe opened them.

"I came here for a lecture from Aliford."

He looked at me and waved me in with a disinterested look on his face. I entered, there was still that weird contraption in the middle of the room. Ignoring it, I walked directly towards a staircase leading to his office.

I climbed up to Aliford office. He looked at me from behind his desk.

"I have been expecting you. Come in, sit." He pointed towards the same chair I used last time.

'Why is he speaking so mysteriously when I let him know beforehand...'

I sat on the chair, and Aliford spoke, "Show me your mana purification circuit."

With my mind, I formed a circuit and poured mana into it. It was like pouring dirty water into a water-treatment facility.

Aliford brought out some glowing crystal, "Pour a pure mana into this."

I took a crystal into my hand and poured my mana in. Its glow instantly brightened into pure colourless light.

"Hehehe, you really are a genius in magic. To master that circuit in such a short time..."

'I probably shouldn't tell him that I spent most of that time catching baddies or lazing around...'

Then he clasped both of his hands together, startling me and said, "Alright, we can step it up a little bit."

He unclasped his hands, and a scroll appeared in the space between.

"This is a circuit to produce a fire, as before you will learn it and come for more."

He tossed a scroll, and I caught it and started to study it. At first glance, I noticed that there were symbols from a purification circuit in combination with symbols used in pyromancy.

I frowned at him, "You know, I was expecting at least some explanation."

He just laughed it off, "Hehehe, but you are a genius. You don't need an explanation to learn a simple circuit.". After that, he wawed me off.

"Ohh, I have one question. I know I am a genius, " I said with a proud tone and a smug expression, "but how can regular people easily imagine such complex circuits to the smallest detail. There must be some trick to it, or otherwise, I doubt there would be so many casters around here."

He gave me another of his disturbing smiles, "Of course, there is a trick to it. When you are learning a magical circuit, it is being directly engraved into your soul, allowing you to instantly summon its detailed image into your mind."

His answer seated my curiosity, but I was still a little bit angry about his underwhelming lesson as I climbed down the stairs out of his office and then exited the tower. My next goal was to hear out a report on a prisoner production plan. For that, I walked back to my room.

'Hmm, Aliford's lesson ended much faster than I thought. So I have a little time before Rose arrives with a report, so let's test that new circuit.'

I seated myself into my favourite armchair in front of the fireplace and looked at the scroll, trying to understand its content as memorizing wasn't enough for me. I wanted to understand it.

There were similarities with a circuit from a pyromancy, but they were few.

I don't know how many hours passed, but I was brought out of my thoughts when someone knocked on my door.

"Come in," I shouted, and Rose walked in, wearing some blue knee-length dress, and seated herself in the other armchair.

"So, how many criminals had you caught?"

"We as an organization were moving in the criminal world for a long time, so we knew about the location of a black market and some notorious criminals. We raided our targets and captured around one-hundredth people. Sadly that number will reduce as a portion of them are relatively small-time criminals that we caught as byproducts."

"Keep the small fries in prison for a time in case we needed more. You can go now."

She stood up and stood still for a while.

"Do you want something else?"

She resumed her walking, "No, I will be going."
