CH 27-1: VerdanOrb

Exhausted and gasping heavily, I glanced at Zest before returning my attention to the Doervus Herd Leader's desperate attempt to retaliate—with its last-ditch effort in its [VerdanOrb] technique.

I realized my own reserves of energy had been depleted. The injuries I had sustained, particularly the deep gash in my ear and the throbbing pain in my arm, were taking a toll on my strength.

Despite my weariness, I refused to let despair creep in. I had come too far to succumb to defeat now. With a steely resolve, I tightened my grip on the spear and prepared to face whatever the Herd Leader had in store.

The massive orb of green, electrified energy crackled and surged, growing larger and more volatile with each passing moment.

However, just as the Herd Leader prepared to release its assault, a sudden burst of light erupted from the forest's edge. A figure emerged, bathed in a radiant glow, their presence emanating an aura of crimson lightning.

The Herd Leader was caught off guard, its concentration broken as it stumbled back from the force of the attack.

Zest stepped forward, the eldritch deer letting out a snarl of rage, its form crackling immensely with crimson lightning before unleashing a series of lightning bolts at the Herd Leader.

The green orb shattered under the onslaught, dissipating into nothingness.

I watched in awe as Zest resumed to unleash a relentless barrage of lightning bolts upon the Herd Leader.

The bolts crackled with immense energy, tearing through the air and striking the Herd Leader with unyielding force.

The Herd Leader, already weakened from our previous clashes, struggled to withstand the onslaught. Each lightning bolt struck its mark, scorching its hide and sapping away its remaining strength.

The forest reverberated with the echoes of thunder as the lightning bolts crashed upon the Herd Leader, creating a spectacle of raw power and fury.

The Herd Leader, battered and overwhelmed, tried to retaliate, but its efforts were futile against the sheer force and intensity of Zest's assault. With each lightning bolt, the Herd Leader continued to stagger backward, its dark energy flickering and waning.

Zest seized this opportunity to charge forward, their antlers crackling with electricity as Zest rammed into the Herd Leader with incredible force. The Herd Leader let out a piercing cry of pain as it was sent flying, crashing into a nearby tree with a resounding thud.

The remaining Doom Deer watched in stunned silence, their hostility giving way to uncertainty. Without their leader, their unified front crumbled, and they began to retreat into the depths of the forest.

Zest stood over the fallen Herd Leader, their antlers still sparking with electricity as Zest glared down at their opponent.

"I won't let you harm Aera," Zest said, their voice low and dangerous. "You and your kind may have forgotten the value of individuality, but I have not. I am Zest, and I will defend those I care about with all my strength."

The fallen Herd Leader, its once imposing form now reduced to a weakened state, struggled to rise, but Zest's presence loomed over it, preventing any further attempts to continue the fight. It seemed to be struggling to get up, but its strength was rapidly waning.

With a defiant snarl, the Herd Leader acknowledged its defeat. It had underestimated the strength and determination of a Merecritt and an eldritch deer fighting together. The battle had taken its toll on the Herd Leader, and it knew that further resistance was futile.

As the remaining Doom Deer disappeared into the depths of the forest, the atmosphere shifted. The tension that had consumed the clearing began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of relief and victory.

Approaching Zest, I placed a hand gently on their side; I looked at Zest with gratitude and admiration, feeling a sense of pride in him. He had stood up for what he believed in and protected me from harm, even when it meant going against his own kind.

As the adrenaline started to fade, the pain from my injuries surged back into focus. My injured ear throbbed relentlessly, and the gash on my arm cried out for attention.

However, I gritted through the pain as I plopped down on my rump, acknowledging that I would need to tend to the wounds at some point.

Zest turned towards me, their eyes softening as the eldritch deer looked at me with concern. "Are you alright, Aera?" Zest asked, their voice gentle.

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief now that the danger had passed. "Thanks to you, Zest," I said, smiling up at them. "You truly are a remarkable Doervus."

Zest tilted his head, looking at me with a hint of amusement. "I am more than just a Doervus, Aera," the Eldriyssal deer stated. "I am Zest, and I will always protect those who are important to me."

As I listened to Zest's words, a warmth spread through my heart.

"I agree, my friend, Zest it is." I came to answer.

"You," Zest and I turned to the defeated Doervus Herd Leader who spoke, "Why do you choose to defend the Merecritt?"

I regarded the defeated Herd Leader with a mixture of curiosity and caution. Despite their weakened state, their question held a note of skepticism, perhaps even a hint of desperation.

Zest stood tall and proud, their antlers crackling with electricity as Zest faced the Herd Leader. "Because she is important to me," Zest said, their voice filled with conviction.

Zest stood tall and proud, their antlers crackling with electricity as they faced the Herd Leader, their expression firm. "I defend Aera because she is my companion and ally. It is not about her being a Merecritt or any specific species."

Enunciating its statement, Zest stomped a hoof, "It is about the bond we share and the trust we have in each other. In this world, I have witnessed that strength comes from unity, not from division."

Zest approached the Herd Leader, their voice filled with conviction. "In this world, we have the power to make choices and forge our own paths. I choose to stand by Aera because she has shown me kindness, trust, and the true value of companionship. We are stronger together, united in our purpose."

The Herd Leader glared up at Zest, its eyes glinting with defiance and resentment. "You are a traitor to your kind," the Herd Leader spat, struggling to rise to its feet. "You have forsaken the principles of the Doervus!"

Zest remained steadfast; their gaze unwavering. "Perhaps I have," Zest replied. "But I have found a new bond, a bond based on mutual respect and support. The world is vast, and there are different paths to be taken. I have chosen mine, and I will protect Aera with everything I have."

The Herd Leader's expression softened, defeat and bitterness crossing its face. "You may have won this battle, Zest, but the struggle for power and dominance will continue. The Eldriyssal world is not kind to those who stray from the herd."

Zest nodded, acknowledging the Herd Leader's words. "I understand the challenges that lie ahead," Zest continued. "But I will face them alongside Aera, standing by her side. Together, we will navigate this world and find our own path, regardless of the obstacles we encounter."

I looked at Zest and I had to admit, I was impressed.

I took a moment to gather my thoughts before responding, choosing my words carefully. "I would like to add that the bond between Zest and me goes beyond our individual species," I began, my voice steady. "We have forged a connection based on trust, shared experiences, and a mutual understanding of the value of protecting those we care about."

I paused, meeting the Herd Leader's gaze directly. "Zest has shown unwavering loyalty to defend and assist me, even when it meant going against their own kind. That kind of dedication is not easily found or taken for granted. It is an admirable strength and I am appreciative of our bond and the values we uphold."

The Herd Leader's eyes flickered, I could tell they were contemplated with anger and frustration. "You speak of individuality and protecting those you care about," they retorted. "But we, the Doervus, have our own code. Our strength lies in unity and the preservation of our kind. You are a Merecritt, an outsider. Why should we care for your well-being?"

I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts once more. "Unity is a powerful force, I won't deny that" I replied, my voice measured. "But true strength comes from embracing diversity and understanding that protecting one another doesn't mean forsaking our own identities. Zest and I have shown that it is possible for different species to stand together, to support and defend each other."

I looked at Zest, a silent understanding passing between us. "Our actions," I continued, "are a testament to the belief that individuality should be celebrated, that each being has their own worth and deserves protection. By standing up for what we believe in, we can forge bonds that transcend the boundaries of our respective species."

The Herd Leader remained silent, their eyes narrowing as the creature processed my words. It was clear that my response challenged the creature's worldview.

After a tense moment, the defeated Herd Leader spoke again, their voice tinged with resignation. "Perhaps there is more to learn from you and your companion than I initially thought," they admitted begrudgingly. "Unity doesn't have to come at the cost of individuality. It seems I have much to reconsider."

With those words, the Herd Leader got up, turned away, and limped into the depths of the forest, joining their retreating comrades. The battle must have left its mark not only physically but also emotionally, prompting the Herd Leader to question their beliefs and the choices they had made.

The Herd Leader let out a sigh before turning, its antlers no longer crackling with eldritch energy. "Go with my blessing," it said, its voice filled with grudging respect. "May your journey be filled with adventure and discovery."

Zest nodded in acknowledgement before turning to me. "We should find a safe place to rest and recover," Zest said, their eyes scanning the forest around us. "I don't trust that there won't be more Eldriyssals out here looking for trouble."

I nodded in agreement, feeling a sense of weariness wash over me. It had been a long and eventful day, and I was ready for some rest.

As the sounds of the retreating Doervus faded, Zest and I were left alone in the clearing, the weight of our victory and the challenges that lay ahead settling upon us.

···

Together, we began our trek through the forest, taking slow and cautious steps. Zest walked beside me, their presence offering reassurance and comfort. We moved in silence, allowing the tranquility of the surroundings to envelop us as we made our way towards a place of respite.

As we reached a secluded clearing, I sank down onto the soft grass, finally giving in to the exhaustion that had been building within me. Zest settled beside me, their crimson lightning flickering gently as they gazed out at the serene landscape.

I turned my attention to my own injuries, the gash in my ear and the throbbing pain in my arm demanding attention.

With the same determination that had carried me through the battle, I set to work on tending to my wounds. As I did, I couldn't help but think about the events that had just transpired.

It was clear that this world of Eldriyssals was a dangerous and unpredictable place, but I was prepared to do everything possible to survive and make it back home.

We began tending to our wounds, using herbs and bandages to treat the injuries inflicted during the fierce battle. As we worked, our conversation turned to reflections on the battles we had faced, the lessons learned, and the unbreakable bond we had formed.

Once my wounds were tended to as best as I could manage, I turned my gaze towards Zest, their form illuminated by the gentle rays of sunlight filtering through the canopy above. "Thank you, Zest," I whispered, my voice filled with sincerity. "I am honored to have you by my side."

Zest inclined their head, a soft smile playing on their face. "And I, too, am honored to stand with you, Aera," they replied, their voice carrying a hint of warmth. "Together, we are stronger. We will face whatever challenges lie ahead, supporting each other every step of the way."

Hours passed, and the sun began its descent, casting a warm, golden hue over the glade. The pain in my ear and arm gradually subsided. I glanced at Zest, noticing their own wounds slowly mending, the cracks in their antlers and on their floating orbs closing.

"We've come a long way, haven't we?" I said softly, breaking the peaceful silence.

Zest nodded, a serene expression gracing their features. "Indeed, Aera. We've faced challenges and adversaries that we never thought possible. But together, we've emerged stronger, united by our shared purpose."

"Yep," I let out a laugh.

A sudden movement caught my attention. The ground in front of us upheaved in a trail until a large creature emerged, popping its head out from the soil. It was the Plelepun. Its eyes were teary, reflecting the tumultuous emotions it must have experienced as it watched the battle unfold.

"Yo! That was a close one!" the Plelepun exclaimed. "I can't believe you two pulled it off! That was some serious teamwork!"

Zest and I turned our attention to the Plelepun, our expressions shifting from surprise to amusement. It seemed that the elephant creature had been watching the entire battle, hidden underground, and had now resurfaced to join in our triumph.

I chuckled at the Plelepun's enthusiasm, appreciating its ability to find joy in even the most intense situations. "Thank you, Plelepun," I said. "Your well-timed intervention helped turn the tide of the battle. We couldn't have done it without you."

The Plelepun beamed with pride, puffing up its chest. "Heh, no problemo! That's what we Plelepuns do best—popping up at just the right time to lend a helping hand, or in this case, a trunk!"

It chuckled; its enthusiasm contagious. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But man, that sphere was intense! Did you see the Herd Leader's face when it got zapped?" The Plelepun's eyes widened.

Zest joined the conversation, a hint of amusement in their voice. "Indeed, Plelepun," they said, their antlers still crackling with residual energy. "Your unexpected assistance caught the Herd Leader off guard, allowing Aera's attack to find its mark. It was a true stroke of luck."

The Plelepun beamed at the praise, its body bouncing with excitement. "Well, I'm always up for a little adventure and mischief," it said, a mischievous glint in its eye. "Glad I could contribute to the epicness of this battle. We make a great team!" The Plelepun curled and uncurled its trunk.

I nodded, my gratitude shining through. "We do, indeed," I said, my gaze shifting between Zest and the Plelepun.

As the Plelepun continued to babble about the battle, recounting the details with exaggerated gestures, Zest and I exchanged a knowing glance. I turned my attention back to the Plelepun, curious about its presence in this remote location.

With a slight tilt of my head, I couldn't help asking, "Plelepun, what brings you all the way out here? Is there something you want to tell us?" My eyes swept across the field momentarily.

The Plelepun's mischievous grin faded, replaced by a more serious expression. Its large round eyes darted around, its large ears swiveled, as if scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger. Then, with a hushed tone, it leaned closer to me and Zest.

"Listen up, you two," the Plelepun whispered urgently. "There's an imminent threat approaching, and it's not something to be taken lightly."

Zest and I exchanged concerned glances, immediately on high alert. We knew better than to disregard the Plelepun's warning.
