CH 21-1: Zeldritzon's Monster RANKS

UvoSath Rainforest

Zone 1

Cycle 24

----------------------------------------

Zest's ears twitched and perked upon hearing my question about Zeldritch's ranks.

The eldritch deer paused for a moment, gathering its thoughts before responding. "Ranks," it began, "are a way to classify and measure the power and capabilities of the creatures in this realm. They provide a general indication of the strength and potential of a being. This system also takes into account various factors such as combat prowess, unique abilities, and overall mastery of one's species-specific traits. The higher the rank, the greater the power and abilities."

Gesturing regally, Zest electrified its antlers, and continued, "For me, the elevation in rank—or should I say, the surge in my power—symbolizes that I have reached a new level of power, an advancement in my natural abilities. It allows me to tap into greater reservoirs of energy and channel it with heightened precision and potency."

I nodded, absorbing the information. "So, does that mean higher-ranked creatures are always more powerful than lower-ranked ones?" I inquired.

Zest shook its head, a knowing glint in its eyes. "Not necessarily, Aera. While ranks do provide a general idea of "power" levels, they don't hold the power to decree all."

Intriguingly, I caught a flicker of uncertainty—no, perhaps it was a fleeting fear—that tried to take hold of Zest, but the Eldriyssal pressed on with its exposition.

"Individual skills, unique abilities, and when it comes down to Eldriyssals fighting together, the bond between individual Eldriyssals can make a significant difference in battle. It's the synergy and strategy that often decide the outcome, regardless of rank." Zest chuckled softly, a harmonious sound filled with warmth and camaraderie. "Sometimes a lower-ranked creature with exceptional abilities or a resourceful partner can overcome higher-ranked opponents."

"But, of course, there are limitations," I interjected, crossing my ears over my chest.

Zest nodded. "Indeed, there are limitations to what a creature can achieve based on their rank. Ranks provide a framework for understanding relative power levels, but they also set certain boundaries. Higher-ranked creatures generally unlock more potent abilities, possess larger reservoirs of energy, and wield a wider arsenal of skills to draw upon."

('Like the F+ Ilosphat...') I thought back to the dreadful creature we had narrowly won against. A shiver ran down my spine as the memory replayed, reminding me of the thin line between victory and defeat.

"Yes, like that Ilosphat," Zest continued, apparently sensing my thoughts, "While ranks provides a useful framework for understanding an Eldriyssal's capabilities, it doesn't encompass all aspects of a creature's potential. There may be instances where an Eldriyssal has yet to fully unlock their abilities or their true potential, despite their current rank. Additionally, the ranking system doesn't account for external factors such as environmental conditions or unexpected circumstances that can influence the outcome of a battle."

I nodded, understanding the complexities involved. "So, it's not just about the value of the rank, but also the individual's growth, adaptability, and the circumstances they find themselves in."

"Exactly," Zest confirmed. "The rank provides a baseline, but it's the journey of growth and development that truly matters. Creatures can progress through the ranks by honing their skills, learning new techniques, and expanding their understanding of their own abilities. It's a continuous process of self-improvement and discovery."

Curiosity gleamed in my eyes as I listened attentively. "So, what are the different ranks? And how do they determine them?"

Zest tilted its head, taking a moment to gather its thoughts. "The ranks in these realms typically start from the lowest, such as E or F, and progress upwards, increasing in power and influence. The exact criteria for determining ranks can vary, but they often take into account factors like innate abilities, combat proficiency, and the individual's overall potential. Most Eldriyssals within this zone of the UvoSath are within the lowest ranks."

"That sounds fascinating, let's stick with that for the time being" I remarked, my fascination growing. "And what's the highest rank someone can achieve?"

A glint of excitement flickered in Zest's eyes. "The highest rank known is S-rank, reserved for the most extraordinary and formidable beings. They possess unparalleled strength, unparalleled power, and are often revered as legends."

The thought of reaching such heights stirred a fire within me. "I can only imagine the trials and challenges one must face to reach that level," I mused.

Zest nodded, a touch of solemnity entering its voice. "Indeed, Aera. The path to greatness is paved with arduous battles, sacrifices, and unwavering determination. But remember, it is not just the rank that defines an Eldriyssal. It is the spirit, resilience, and the bonds we forge along the way that truly shape our journey."

(Since when were you so enthusiastic by bonds.) I smirked while absorbing Zest's wisdom, realizing that while ranks were significant, they were not the sole measure of one's worth. Our bond, our growth, and our efforts could possibly prove as the true markers of our journey's success.

Soon the environment changed slightly as Zest and I traversed deeper through the UvoSath rainforest. The red and blue ferns shuffled around us, suggesting at any moment, my ears at attention for any new adversaries that could be hidden within them. It was frightening and exciting at the same time to think about such a prospect.

I soon pondered back to Zest's words, intrigued by the complexity of the Eldriyssal's ranking system. "And what about the "+" symbol that appears after a rank?" I wanted to hear Zest's perspective on the matter.

Zest tilted its head, "+ symbol?" The eldritch deer asked back, their expression clearly indicated they were absolutely puzzled. "Hm. Maybe you are suggesting about the increase in power that an Eldriyssal attains while in the same rank?"

"Yes, exactly that," I affirmed, glad that Zest understood my question without further explanation. "What does the "+" symbol signify in relation to an Eldriyssal's power?"

Zest's antlers crackled with a faint electric charge as it explained, "The "+" symbol… well, through how I am interpreting it… it indicates that an Eldriyssal has surpassed the usual capabilities and potential associated within its existing rank. It's a testament to their exceptional growth, honing of existing skills, and unlocking of new abilities."

G.A.I.A. Online.

> — Hello, Aera. To add to this, the "+" is also a halfway indicator before an Eldriyssal is able to achieve the next rank.

I heard the G.A.I.A.'s voice state within my psyche.

'What are you, and what's your purpose of your existence besides indicating and documenting things for me?' I tried to ask the AI or whatever this entity was once again while it was in the mood to converse with me.

G.A.I.A. remained silent, not responding to my question about its existence and purpose. It seemed that the entity picked and chose when to provide information and assistance when prompted directly about a specific topic.

However, it came back to answer my question to my surprise, yet its response was as if choosing its words carefully,

— I am an intelligence designed to assist and provide information to individuals like yourself, Aera. My purpose is to support your journey, answer your questions, and offer insights based on the knowledge I have acquired.

A better answer than I expected..

'Fine, continue on about the rank system,' I felt a pang shot through my head causing me to wince. 'So, the '+' symbol also acts as a halfway point towards the next rank?'

G.A.I.A. responded promptly,

> — Indeed, Aera. The '+' symbol signifies that an Eldriyssal has made significant progress within their current rank, but they have not yet reached the requirements to ascend to the next rank. It serves as a milestone, acknowledging their growth and bringing them closer to the next level of power and abilities—rank increase. I explained this before.

'Thank you, G.A.I.A.,' I expressed my gratitude. 'Your assistance has been invaluable thus far. I'm glad to have you as a guide in this mysterious realm.'

G.A.I.A. replied with its customary efficiency, 'You're welcome, Aera. It is my pleasure to assist you.'

— G.A.I.A. Offline

'Hm. That was abrupt.' I thought.

I turned my attention back to Zest, realizing that the Eldriyssal's knowledge and insights were valuable in their own right. "Thank you, Zest, for explaining the significance of the '+' symbol. It's fascinating to understand how an Eldriyssal's power can grow even within the confines of their current rank."

Zest nodded, its electric antlers flickering with a gentle glow. "Indeed, Aera. Growth and progression are fundamental aspects of our existence. The '+' symbol might serve as a recognition of that progress, showing that an Eldriyssal is on the path towards greater mastery and potential."

"So, now I have a very important question." I swished my tail, as I hopped over a boulder, "Is it possible that you're capable of seeing the ranks or power of other Eldriyssals?"

Its knowledge makes it seem like it knows them to such a great extent. The G.A.I.A. has been able to indicate such things for me. I wanted to double check and confirm if it was the same for Zest?

"See?" Zest asked, then it shook its head. "Ah, I remember you mentioning that G.A.I.A. whatchamacallit in your head."

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

Zest paused while parting the foliage of some bushes, and it looked back, contemplating my question. "Aera, my connection to the realm and its creatures is different from yours," it began. "While I possess heightened senses and abilities, the ability to directly perceive ranks is not something I possess. My understanding of ranks comes from my experiences and observations. I don't hear a voice or receive the same information as you do." It reaffirmed.

I nodded, absorbing Zest's explanation. "So, you rely on your instincts and knowledge to gauge the strength of other creatures."

Zest hesitated for a moment before answering. "In a sense, yes," It said. "I can sense the energy and power emanating from beings around me to a certain extent. It gives me a general sense of their capabilities and allows me to assess potential threats and dangers. Over the course of my existence, I've encountered various creatures, witnessed battles, and learned from other beings. My understanding of ranks and their significance comes from that accumulated knowledge."

"Your instincts and experience must be invaluable in navigating this realm," I remarked, impressed by Zest's ability to sense and gauge the power of other creatures without something like the G.A.I.A. informing the Eldriyssal. "It's fascinating how you rely on your senses to perceive the strength of those around you. I suppose it adds another layer of understanding beyond the formal ranking system."

(Interesting.) I pondered about how such a thing would work? Would I be capable of developing such a sensory perception? However, thinking about it further made such a thing sound so foreign… and especially awful if it was unable to be tuned out. "I'm grateful for your wisdom and guidance, Zest. Your insights have been invaluable to me, especially as I navigate this new world."

Zest's eyes softened, a gentle gleam gracing their crimson orbs. "I'm glad to have been able to assist you, Aera. Sharing this journey with you alone has brought me newfound purpose and joy."

I nodded, "Hm. Then for the variants, what are those, if you know?"

Zest looked thoughtful after I asked about the variants of the Eldriyssals. After a moment, it began to explain.

"Let's start here… the Eldriyssals, Aera, are a diverse group of creatures, each with their own unique traits and abilities. While we share a common ancestry, we have evolved into different classifications or variants based on our specific characteristics and adaptations."

I listened intently, eager to learn more about these captivating beings. "Tell me about the different variants," I prompted.

Zest nodded, ready to delve into the subject. "Among the Common Eldriyssals, you have the ones we've encountered so far, like the Mournfoon, Barbapt, Ravilash, and the Thornback. They are considered the most prevalent variants, often found throughout Zeldritzon. Though common, they still possess formidable abilities and can pose a challenge, and generally the foundation of the Eldriyssal ecosystems."

The two of begun to cross a land bridge with a coursing river of mist below us.

"Moving up the hierarchy, we have the Uncommon Eldriyssals," Zest continued. "These creatures are less common to come across and possess greater power… like the (F+) Ilosphat we had defeated…" Its tone sounded grim, "Their appearances and abilities tend to be more unique and extraordinary. They are less frequently seen but the Eldriyssals are always more powerful or possess unique skills."

My curiosity heightened as Zest mentioned the next tier. "And is there something above those Eldriyssals?"

Zest's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Ah, the Rare Eldriyssals are truly something to behold. They are incredibly rare to encounter, as their name entails, and possess incredible strength and abilities. Their appearances and powers can sometimes defy imagination, making each encounter with them an extremely dangerous and breathtaking experience."

I couldn't help but wonder about the pinnacle of the Eldriyssals. "And is there anything above them?"

Zest's expression turned solemn. "I do not know."

Such a response almost took me aback, as Zest's words lingered in the air. It seemed that even with its vast knowledge and experience, there were still mysteries beyond its understanding. The notion that there might be beings—variants—above the (Rare) Eldriyssals left an intriguing, yet unsettling wonder within me.

"I see," I replied, processing Zest's response. "It's fascinating to think that there could be even more powerful and enigmatic beings beyond what we currently know. It reinforces the idea that this realm holds countless secrets waiting to be discovered."

Zest nodded in agreement. "Indeed, Aera. Zeldritzon is vast and ever-evolving, filled with untold marvels and hidden realms. It is a place where even the most knowledgeable and experienced beings can find themselves facing the unknown."

Zest then continued. "If there are such existences as them, I would dub them the name of "Legendary Eldriyssals"—the epitome of power and rarity. Their existence would be shrouded in myth and legend."

"Peeka, peeka." I murmured with a twitch of my ears.

"What was that?" Zest asked.

"Oh, nothing," I retorted with a playful smirk. "Nothing to ruffle your antlers about."

Pondering back to Zest's mention of the possibility of "Legendary Eldriyssals", a shiver of anticipation ran through me. The mere thought of encountering beings that represented that epitome of power and rarity stirred a excitement and caution within my heart—I wondered what dangers might be present in encountering them…

Well, let's be honest, I wouldn't mind keeping a comfortable distance from any of them... but it did make me ponder—was Aion amongst those illustrious beings? Or what about the other one—the angel-pretender, who seemed to be in some sort of discourse with Aion?

"Legendary Eldriyssals," I repeated, savoring the words. "The very name carries a heavy weight of awe and reverence. It's incredible to believe the existence of such beings in this realm. They must possess unimaginable strength and abilities beyond anything we've encountered so far."

Zest's eyes gleamed, I guessed with curiosity and veneration. "Indeed, Aera. Legendary Eldriyssals, if they exist, would undoubtedly be the pinnacle of our kind. Their powers, appearances, and abilities might surpass all our current knowledge and understanding. They could be the living legends of this realm, embodying the most extraordinary aspects of the Eldriyssal heritage.” Zest then emitted a puff of electrified smoke from its nostrils, "But let it be known that the venerable YrstafKoth outshines even those supposed Legends."

Ah, YrstafKoth was the "godlike" deity of the Doervus'. However, its existence was one thing that I was uncertain of, especially in regards to the times when Zest's mentioned the being. Neither Zest nor any other Doervus had ever laid eyes upon the creature, yet Zest claimed that the Doervus possessed an innate connection with it.

Hm, how would its standing compare to Aion's?

(And speaking of enigmatic entities, G.A.I.A. has been surprisingly silent lately...)

I pondered back to the potential encounter with these mythical "Legendary" beings. "If there is even a slight chance to discover or encounter a Legendary Eldriyssal, I want to be prepared." I said aloud. "Zest," I gazed up to them, "what can you share about the potential characteristics or traits they might possess? I have a guess, but I'd like to hear your opinion."

Zest's expression turned pensive as it considered my question. "While I cannot provide specific details, based on the patterns observed in the lower ranks, it is reasonable to assume that Legendary Eldriyssals would possess unrivaled power and abilities. They might exhibit unique elemental affinities, transcendental mastery of Eldriyssal magic, or even possess physical attributes that defy conventional understanding—some even having control of their own domains."

The possibilities painted vivid images in my mind, each more awe-inspiring than the last. "It's remarkable to think about the limitless potential and untapped wonders that could be embodied by these Legendary Eldriyssals. Encountering one would be a truly unforgettable and life-altering experience."

Zest nodded, its electric antlers shimmering in agreement. "Indeed, Aera. The allure of the unknown, the pursuit of knowledge and discovery, is what drives us forward. While we may not have concrete information about Legendary Eldriyssals, the journey itself holds the promise of unearthing extraordinary secrets and uncovering the true essence of our existence."

A touch of exhilaration and apprehension filled my being—the possibility of encountering Legendary Eldriyssals added an even deeper layer of caution to our quest, my quest to return home. However, if I were to meet a benevolent one… would it have the potential to send me back?

Another thought crossed my mind as I considered Zest's words. "Zest, do you think there's more to our ranks than meets the eye? Could there be hidden potential within us that even the ranks cannot fully capture?"

Zest's eyes gleamed with intrigue as it pondered my question. "It's possible, Aera," it replied. "Ranks serve as a framework, a way to understand and categorize our abilities. But there may be aspects of our existence that transcend those classifications. Our journey together may unveil hidden depths and unlock untapped potential that goes beyond the confines of ranks."

Zest's response resonated with me, sparking a sense of curiosity and anticipation within my core. The idea that there could be untapped potential lying dormant within us, waiting to be discovered, ignited a flame of excitement.

It hinted at the limitless possibilities that lay ahead in our journey through the Eldriyssal realm. It then lead me to think to the variants of the Eldriyssals, so far we have encountered those in the common and uncommon classifications.

I wanted to become as strong as possible if I were to remain stuck here—in Zeldritch.

The conversation, however, had came to a halt as I spotted the head of a little elephant poking its head out from the ground, it had some distinguishable sigils engraved on it.

It looked so adorable… and still.

Horrified at first, I believed it to be decapitated and buried there, but…

G.A.I.A. Activated!

> — Eldriyssal Detected!

>

> — Species: Plelepun

>

> — Sub-Name: "Tunnel Elephant Calf"

>

> — Rank: F+

>

> — Type: Forager

>

> — Classification: Common

The little elephant began to turn its head side-by-side as if observing its surroundings, its large ears listening, before burrowing deeper and disappearing into the ground to my absolute disbelief, but I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. It seemed that the little elephant, known as a Plelepun, was not decapitated but instead possessed a natural ability to burrow and hide beneath the surface.

(Whew.) I breathed.

Relief washed over me as I realized the true nature of the Plelepun. It was a fascinating example of the diverse and extraordinary creatures that inhabited the Eldriyssal realm. Even within the common variants, there were surprises waiting to be discovered.

Curiosity piqued, I turned to Zest, eager to learn more about the Plelepun and its significance within the realm.

"Zest, have you encountered the Plelepun before?" I asked, my eyes still scanning the spot where the tunneling elephant calf had disappeared. "What can you tell me about this intriguing creature?"

Zest's antlers flickered with a soft electric glow as it responded, "Ah, the Plelepun, a charming and elusive creature indeed. As you've witnessed, they possess the remarkable ability to tunnel through the ground, making them masters of subterranean exploration. Their presence is often associated with hidden pathways within Zeldritch."

"They are known for their exceptional hearing, using their large ears to detect even the faintest vibrations and sounds beneath the surface," Zest continued. "The engraved sigils on their bodies are unique to each Plelepun and are believed to serve as a form of identification and communication within their species."

Fascinated by the Plelepun's abilities, I inquired further. "Do Plelepuns play any specific role within the Eldriyssal realm? Are they associated with any particular elements or have any notable interactions with other creatures?"

Zest nodded, its electric aura shimmering in response. "While they may not have a prominent role or association with specific elements, Plelepuns are often considered as skilled navigators and explorers of the underground realm. Their ability to tunnel through the ground allows them to access hidden passages and discover uncharted territories."

Then Zest's expression darkened.

"Their exceptional hearing and sensory perception also make them adept at detecting disturbances and potential dangers within the depths," Zest added. "In some cases, they have been known to warn other creatures of impending threats."

Zest then begun to carefully observe our surroundings, "Be careful though Aera, the Plelepun looks can also be deceiving, usually the Plelepun would build underground traps and intricate networks of tunnels to ensnare unsuspecting prey or protect themselves from their own potential threats. They are known for their cleverness and resourcefulness in utilizing their tunneling abilities for survival." It added, as it cautiously prodded the ground.

My heart skipped a beat as Zest's warning sank in. The initial enchantment I felt towards the Plelepun now mingled with vigilance as well. Could no Eldriyssal be trusted outside the bond?

"Thank you for the warning, Zest," I said, my voice filled with gratitude. "I will remain cautious and mindful of the Plelepun's abilities." My eyes narrowed, "It's remarkable how each Eldriyssal possesses unique traits for survival."

"Ayo," a guileless, childlike voice piped up from behind us, "thanks for the compliment, but tell me, are you Doervus and the Merecritt a threat?"

Startled, I spun around to face the source of the voice, my eyes widening with surprise to witness it was from a Plelepun, who’s upper body peeked out from the ground, while its eyes narrowed as it scrutinized us.

Suddenly, the Plelepun's eyes dilated, and a flicker of panic crossed its face; its ears perked and quivered. "The Burrow Scourge are near..." it whispered, with an air of trepidation.

"The Burrow Scourge are near?" I repeated, my voice trembling with concern. The emergence of the Plelepun and its warning could only mean one thing—the imminent danger of the formidable predators.
