Jet now sat on the couch, bored out his mind. After finishing up with his mother's computer, he had offered to drive them both to work. It turns out his license was revoked after he had died supposedly. So now he sat there flipping through channels on the television, nothing on as usual. He decided to go for a walk instead.
After walking around town for a few hours, Jet decided nothing had changed. Except for one thing, everyone had been giving him a wide berth. Well, it wasn't like this wouldn't happen. The whole town had been warned he was a World Jumper. Even gave everyone a picture of him. Everyone was assured that Jet isn't dangerous, not that people would believe that right off.
"Well, if it isn't the famous World Jumper Jet." Someone yelled at the top of their lungs behind Jet.
A smile crossed Jet's lips at the sound of the slightly husky voice. He turned to see his only other friend in the world. "I see you're as loud as ever, Jeff." Before he could say anything else, Jeff ran up to Jet and gave him a bear hug.
"It's good to see you, man. Buy me some lunch?"
Jet now sat at a Burger King watching his friend eat. He had noticed his friend was skinnier now, and Jeff's blonde hair was disheveled. His brown eyes almost looked like what Jet did before. But the most outrageous thing was what he wore. Blue jeans and a grey t-shirt. Now Jet felt terrible that Jeff bought the meal since he didn't have a wallet. Of course, he would feel worse if it wasn't for the fact they were both in a private school. But at a future time, he decided to ask if Amanda still had his, or he could just get a new one.
"Dude, you going to show me some magic?" Jeff asked between bites of a burger.
Jet simply answered, "no."
"Oh, come on, man. You can't just learn magic and not show." Jeff complained.
"Sorry, it's one of the rules on me by the government. Not only that." Jet didn't finish.
"Dude, don't keep me hanging."
Jet looked at one of his hands. "I carry a deep burden with my magic. When all I want is to be normal."
Jeff slapped Jet across the face. "Dude, not cool, you know how much I hate those feel sorry for me hero's."
Jet rubbed at his cheek. "You know, just because I got magic doesn't mean a slap doesn't hurt." He decided he should have strengthened his body just in case. But a smile crossed his lips. "Still wanna see some magic?"
"Man, quit stalling and show me."
Jet took the lid off his soda and used magic to make the liquid float. Then with no hesitation, he threw it at Jeff soaking him. The look on Jeff's face made Jet break out laughing. When he opened his eyes, Jet noticed everyone looking at him. "Uh, sorry." He said and removed the soda off Jeff and put it back in his cup.
Jeff got up and yelled. "That was awesome."
After Jet's little demonstrations of magic, he and Jeff just walked around town. Of course, Jet's lousy luck rears its face. He could hear gunshots in a nearby store. Without hesitation, he grabbed Jeff's arm and started to walk away.
Jeff stopped and looked at Jet. "What are you doing. There are people needing help."
"Jeff, I am not a hero." Jet pointed back towards the gunshots. "Jeff, I am not bulletproof, not only that." He pointed at his wrist. "Also, I have signed a lot of papers for the government saying I wouldn't get involved in anything, without permission, of course."
Jeff just shook his head. "This has nothing to do with being a hero. It's about doing what is right." Then he took off running towards the gunshots.
Jet immediately ran after Jeff. "Jefferson, don't be an idiot. Get back here." He yelled. As he ran after Jeff, a cat ran out of behind a house tripping him.
"Kid, don't be stupid," Alex said after tripping Jeff. 'Lock your friend down before he does something stupid.' She voiced in Jet's head.
Jet immediately created hands with the concrete to hold Jeff down. "Stay here. I'll handle this." He said as he walked by Jeff.
"Wait, I can help." Jeff tried to get up.
'Alex, go in and give me an idea of what's happening. I'll sneak over to the cops being shot at.' Before Jet went over to them, he looked at the store. It was just a clothes store, so most likely a petty thief. Jet raised his hands and created a wall between the store and himself. Then he started to walk towards the cops, who almost immediately noticed him.

"Freeze, don't move."
"Hang on. I just want to help. My name is Jetsford Gard." Jet got interrupted by a ricochet bullet to his thigh. It was all he could do not to put down his hands. So he just winced in pain and cursed his luck.
"We know who you are, but it's against the law for you to help."
'Jet, the cashier in here is bleeding out. I got my paw holding in the wound, but I'm sure there is too much blood for this to be healthy.' Alex reported.
"Sorry, officers, gonna have to arrest me." Jet turned created a hole in his wall to get a look at the gunmen. He got a look at the hands of the guy, which was good enough. Creating a spike from the ground and right through the man's hands.
The two cops looked into the store at the man now on the ground screaming. Then looked back at Jet. "Did you just?" They started to ask.
"No time, call an ambulance. The cashier is bleeding out." Jet watched as they called it in and ran into the building. So he decided to lean on the cop car and put the road wall he created back to normal. He also freed Jeff when someone found him stuck to the ground. Now, he was stuck behind the yellow tape.
"Mr. Gardner." A woman said, putting out her hand. "I'm Captain Forge."
"So here to cuff me personally?" Jet gave the woman a wide smile.
Forge smiled. "No, I've made a few calls about you. I talked to Detective Davis. He said you were interesting."
"That's all he had to say?" Jet decided he needed to make a better impression the next time they met.
"In all my years I've known Davy, he never called anyone interesting."
"I'm sorry, Davy?" Jet asked.
"Sorry bad habit, we go way back. Davis was my Captain when I started. Before you ask, no, he didn't get demoted. He retired and recently came back as a detective. Said something about being bored a few years ago. Now back on topic, he trusts you. So I'll take responsibility here and say we asked for your help." Forge looked towards the store. "Also, you saved that man's life today. He has two kids at home."
'I think you owe your friend an apology.' Alex interrupted.
'A man gets to live because I helped, so yeah. However, I get to push the point I'm not bulletproof.' Jet thought back. "Well Forge, I'd take the credit, but my friend forced my hand. I was going to walk away. Jeff is a far better person than I am." He looked at the crowd toward his friend.
Forge looked to the crowd of people and let out a sigh. "You got to be kidding, that's your friend?"
Jet let out a light chuckle. "That's a yes and no question. Jeff was my best friend until my parents died. He tried to help me through the loss, but I pushed him away. Then when I met Amanda, she got me out of that wall I built around my heart. After a while, me and Jeff would talk, but he wouldn't be my best friend anymore. Said that he had failed where Amanda succeeded. So he just calls me a friend and a colleague."
"I see. Well, he is a thorn in my side. You wouldn't believe how often he is brought into the precinct. But I will admit we have asked him to go to the police academy." Forge thought that Jeff would make a good cop. However, he rejected every time.
Jet let out a breath of air and closed his eyes. "If anyone deserves to have power, it is Jeff. He has always wanted to help people. No, not want, did try to help people."
One of the medics walked up to them. "One of the officers said you were shot?" He pointed at Jet.
Forge looked at Jet. "Right, forgot about that. You should go with them and get checked out."
"No need, I removed the bullet already. Then cauterized the hole myself." Jet held up the bullet for them to see. Then he noticed both their faces. 'Maybe I should have kept that to myself.'
'Better question is why I haven't got a thank you. I literally kept the man from bleeding out.' Alex interrupted Jet's thoughts.
Jet clapped his hands together to get their attention. "Well, it's been fun. I need to go and pick up my girlfriend from work." He started to walk away when Forge grabbed his arm.
"Hang on, kiddo. Let's swap numbers before you leave." Forge said.
So before Jet left, they swapped numbers. Then grabbed Jeff and went on his way. With Alex screaming at him. 'You didn't even mention my contribution.' He ignored her and just kept walking since she didn't accept his thank you.
Jeff walked back and forth as he and Jet waited for Amanda. "I can't believe Amanda works here. If she needed money, all she need do was ask. Man Pizza Hut, she's too good for this place. Dude, I could see you working here, but her."
"Why would I work here? I got money, a lot of it. Also, I've been gone for almost a year. I found out when she left this morning for work. What's your excuse for not knowing?" Jet watched as Jeff stopped in place and turned towards him. Then just stared. "What?"
"When she left for work?"
"Yes, when she." Jet stopped and thought about what he said. Then spun the words around his head. "Oh."
"So you guys moved to the next stage of your relationship?" Jeff stretched the word relationship.
"Yeah, they even sleep in the same bed." Alex butted into the conversation.
"Dude, you used some protection, right?" Jeff grabbed Jet by his shoulders to look into Jet's eyes.
"Not funny." Jet now wished he hadn't told Jeff about Alex. 'You're trying to get me back for earlier?'
'Absolutely, I deserved some of that credit.' Alex turned her head away.
Jeff sighed and looked away towards the Pizza Hut. "Come on, man, what's wrong with you? That girl is in love with you, man." He looked back into Jet's eyes. "And the way you look at her, your eyes practically glow. Well, they literally glow now. So why don't you just marry her already."
"You should see what he dreams about. Some of it would make you blush. Like this one when." Alex disappeared from existence. Jet locked her up again.
Jet walked away from Jeff and leaned on a light pole. Then pulled a little square box out of his pocket. When he opened it, Jeff could see the ring glittering in the sunlight. "I've had this ring since we were fifteen. We went to a jewelry shop to buy her a necklace. When she saw this ring, Amanda asked me to remember it when I went shopping for her engagement ring. So I went back the next day and bought this, and I've kept it in my sock drawer. But things change, Jeff. How do I ask her to marry me when I don't even know if I'll come back from the next world. Shoot, I'm amazed I'm even alive. My body is covered in scars. I've had so many close calls with death this last year. So Jeff, please tell me what I am supposed to do. I love her with all my heart, but I don't want to hurt her. Also the fact we can't get married yet."
Jeff walked up to Jet and put a hand on his shoulder. "Life can be cruel. The best we all can do is keep walking forward."
