Chapter 37

Chapter 37

Davis just stood in place, lighting a cigarette. He looked out at the crumbling town. "Jet, I don't think you know what minimum damage means."

Jet was being bandaged up after his fight. Along with being chewed out by the paramedics saying he needed a hospital. He got up and winced, then limped over to Davis. "I may have went a little overboard."

"A little kid, you destroyed four blocks of this town." Davis waved his hand over the destruction.

"Ok, you have a point. But not all was me. At least half was the tree's fault." Jet wasn't too sure after looking around. A lot of the damage was definitely his fault. "Guess you probably won't call on me again."

They kept walking for a while in silence until they arrived at the original location of the tree. "After seeing what you can do. I'll definitely call on you again." Davis said, walking to the house where it had all started. "What have you found?" He asked one of the officers near the entrance.

"Detective, they found a couple dozen seeds in the basement. But they plan to check the entire town." The officer said.

Davis just nodded and walked in, then towards the basement. "Of course, don't get it in your head that I'll call you for everything. You may be powerful, but you are young and reckless. If there had been people in town, the causalities would have been high." Davis started back up their conversation.

Jet was about to refute what Davis said. But he couldn't. The man was dead on about him being reckless. Rick and Todly had tried to beat it out of him. Well, that had obviously not worked well. "Yeah, you're not the first to say so."

They both just stood a while, looking at the seeds that moved. The seeds were moving around and in and out of the dirt. Jet was almost certain he could hear them talking to each other. But he couldn't make out what they were saying or couldn't understand them. Then started to wonder how he understood the talking tree that he had just fought.

"So, what is going to happen to these little guys?" Jet asked as he tapped on the glass around them.

"Out of my pay grade. I'm just sticking around to make sure no more attacks occur."

"I got to ask? Why isn't the military out here doing this? Why do they have, well, detectives instead?" Jet was sure the military could still kill him. There was no way he could survive a bullet to the head, not only that they could have torched the tree. The military has a natural talent for killing.

"They are too busy to help with the small stuff. The borders are under continuous attack nowadays. It's a full-time job to keep the other countries at bay these days." Davis walked back out of the building and sighed. He leaned on the building, lighting another cigarette. "I'm actually up for retirement." He then looked at Jet. "But my daughter went and got pregnant."

"So you stayed to make the world safe." Jet finished, then put out his hand. "I also want to make the world safe for someone. So let's make sure the world is safe for them."

Davis took Jet's hand and shook. "It's a deal."

Jet got a ride home, not a helicopter ride this time. The whole ride over, he just slept or tried. He kept jerking awake from nightmares. Something else was bothering him as well. His magic didn't charge as fast on Earth. He figured the rate his magic came back was ten percent a week. Jet decided he would have to be careful and was also glad he had a lot of magic.

'Oh, Jet you're home.' Alex said gleefully.

Jet got out of the car and started walking to the house's front door. 'Yes, I'm back, and I'm sure you got the girls all worked up.'

'Yeah, we went shopping. I suggested it when I saw the news." Alex pointed out.

Jet was glad for that. He didn't need the girls to worry about him. Then he wondered where the news crews were. Jet didn't remember seeing any. Then an image of Amanda trying on a nightgown flashed through his mind. Before Jet knew it, he tripped face planting the door. He could just make out the giggling of Alex in the distance of his mind.

The door flew open, and Amanda came running out. "Jet, you're back. Why you on the ground?"

'Alex, I'm going to kill you.' Jet thought. "I tripped, hurt my foot earlier." It was more of a half-truth. But he was not going to admit what tripped him.

Amanda's hand went to her mouth when she realized Jet was covered in bandages. "What happened?." She asked, tears started rolling down her face.

"Oh, this. Just a few bruises from fighting a tree." He lost the momentum of talking when he realized something. How do you explain fighting a tree?

"You fought a tree?" Amanda asked, razing an eyebrow. That was a start to an interesting conversation. However, Jet took his time and recounted his fight. He also had finished his very heavily edited story about the other world. Making sure not to mention what happened to his parents since he wasn't sure about those memories.

Jet woke up to an alarm from Amanda's cellphone. She leaned over him and shut the alarm off. Then she just lay across him moaning. "Time for work." She groaned.

"What do you mean work?" Jet was sure she should still be in school. Then remembered he should be in school and now wondered if he was still enrolled.

"Money is tight at my house, so I dropped out to get a job." Amanda got out of bed and grabbed her clothes, then walked over to the bathroom.

Jet just watched as she went to the bathroom, staring at her as she walked off. Amanda looked lovely in her new nightgown. For some reason, she has been very clingy. Not that he really cared. It was nice having her around again. Then he decided to get up and check a few things. After getting dressed, Jet got onto his computer to check a few things. He checked the bank accounts to check the money situation. After a few minutes and all the passwords still working, he found no money situation. Between all the accounts, they have a little over one million dollars, which is three hundred thousand more than before he left.

'Hey, can I come out now?' Alex poked at Jet's mind.

A frown crossed Jet's face. He had locked up Alex in his mind. Kind of like a dog house in his head. He was irritated after what she did to him. But a night locked up for tripping him for a prank might be overboard. 'Yes, you can go.' He thought to Alex, then watched as she started to walk off. 'Don't make me regret letting you back out.' Jet could just make out giggling in his mind as Alex disappeared. He started to wonder how old Alex was in her mind. She acted too much like a child the longer she was around. Maybe it had to do with being connected to him.

"Whatever." Jet said to no one in particular. Then checked on his mother's trick to abusing the stock market. Well, that's what he called what she had done. She made a program that automatically buys and sells stocks, which is how they made their money. But there was a slight problem it wasn't running. He reached into a drawer on his desk and pulled out a few. "Where are the hard disks with mother's program?" After Jet checked each drawer, he decided to ask his Aunt Jean, who happened to be right behind him.

"I noticed you were looking at the stocks, and I heard what you said." Jean put her hands together in front of herself. "There was a break-in, and the hard disks were stolen."

"Well, I'm not sure they were legal. So I'm guessing you didn't report them?" No, he was sure his mother's program wasn't legal. But, until someone said otherwise, it was legal.

"Of course I didn't. But they did steal all your mother's jewelry, along with both their rings." Jean said with tears rolling down her face.

Jet got up and hugged her. "Don't worry. I'm just glad you weren't home." Then a thought occurred to him. "How did they get through the alarms?"

"Power outage."

Jet scratched his head in thought. There should be a generator that kicks on when the power shuts off. "Is our generator not working?"

"Oh no, the power went out at sky tech security." Jean corrected.

Jet had a suspicion that the program was the actual objective. Well, joke is on them. They can't use the program without the key code. "Well, Aunt Jean, first fire sky tech security. Second, the program is useless without the key code. Also, since I can disappear at any time, I think it's time for you to know how to use and make the program."

"But they stole the program, and you did show me how to use the program.."

"No, they stole a copy of the program. Once they use it on another computer, the key code when put in is deleted." Jet walked to the door and looked back at his Aunt. "Let's head over to my mother's personal computer."

"There's only one other computer in the house." Jean pointed out.

"Please, mom would have never touched my computer, let alone the one in the living room. Her computer is in her office." Jet smiled.

"What office?"

Jet walked out of his room and went to his parent's room. When he walked in, he headed over to an empty table with an ugly painting over it. "This is mom's office."

"So, she hid her laptop in the table?" Jean asked quizzically.

Jet laughed. "Mom, use a laptop, now that's funny." He reached over to the painting and put his thumb on a flat spot. The painting split in half, opening like a door, then slid into the wall. It opened up to a costly computer. Jet then pulled out a flat-screen monitor and set it up on the table. Then he took out a mouse and keyboard, and then he also hooked them up. Then pulled out a fingerprint scanner.

This was the point Jean had a confused look on her face. "Is that a fingerprint scanner?"

Jet booted up the computer and talked without turning around. "Yes, Aunt Jean, it's a fingerprint scanner."

"Why do you have a fingerprint scanner?"

"Mom was very protective of her baby." Jet looked at Jean, who looked even more confused. "I need the fingerprint scanner to add you to the system. Like I said, if I keep disappearing, you need to know how to use the program. Also how to update and create new hard drives, and most importantly the key code." His mother was hoping he would pick up on programming like her. But it was no good. However, he did learn how to use what she called her baby.

"Why did you never tell me about this?" Jean waved at the computer.

"It was a way for me to stay connected to mom." Jet rubbed his head as the memories of his parent's death ran through his mind. He hadn't had the guts to tell his Aunt Jean about them. For starters, how was that Aaron there in the first place? The memory just made no sense to him.

After getting his Aunt Jean fingerprinted and set up to use his mother's computer, Jet then had to explain how to update and create new copies of the program. That had been tougher than he had thought. It turns out his Aunt Jean is computer illiterate. But when Amanda got out of her shower she learned quite quickly how it had worked. Jet had even asked if she wanted a program, she declined immediately. Amanda said something about her mom not needing any more drug money. He then wondered when Amanda's mom had gotten into drugs. She had already been a mean drunk. This all just made Jet want to get her out of that house quicker.
