Chapter 47: Special Chapter 2.5: Shovel Talks

Dabi chuckled softly as he watched Hawks get dragged off by Himi and Izuku, leaving the adults alone for a moment. He was just glad the party was going well, happy that Yui looked like she was actually enjoying herself.

“I can’t believe you’re dating Hawks and didn’t tell us!” Yamada pouted at him as he started the cleanup.

“Well, he didn’t tell you because he wanted it to be a secret from your kids.” Nemuri grinned as she helped him, “He trusted me to keep his secret.”

“I’m trustworthy!”

“Zashi, you suck at keeping secrets.” Aizawa spoke up, “So, who do you think is going to start the shovel talk with Hawks first?”

“I bet Yui goes first, then Himi-chan and last but not least, Izuku.” Yamada grinned.

“Nah, Himi, Izu then Yui.” Dabi flicked suds at Nemuri while he was washing the dishes.

“I kinda wanna hear this.” Nemuri let out a little giggle, “Those three really love you, Dabi, I’d love to hear how they’d intimidate Hawks.”

----------------------------------------

Hawks faced the three teenagers that stood in front of him, giving them one of his best smiles. The three had taken him to their backyard, he couldn’t help but admire it. There was a large tree that had a tire swing on one of the branches, flowering shrubs and a sitting area with a fire ring. It’d be very homey if he knew that the three weren’t going to threaten him for dating their brother. He had this, he was a hero, kids loved him! Really, he expected a talk from Dabi’s family, but what could three teenagers really threaten him with?

“So, you’re really Dabi-nii's boyfriend?” Himiko asked, tilting her head as piercing amber eyes met his own. Hawks wasn’t quite sure how to feel about how those eyes seemed to track his every move, then again, the other two’s stares were just as intense.

“Yep! We just became official last week actually. We’ve been talking for a few months now.” His wings fluttered a bit before settling.

“Let’s get this over with then.” Yui spoke up, arms crossed over her chest. “I’m sure you knew this talk was coming, right? We’re all very protective of each other.”

“Of course,” Hawks chuckled softly, “Dabi speaks so much about you kids. So, I have an idea of how much you all love each other. I gotta say, it’s really nice to see a family this close even though you all don’t live together anymore.”

“Is he trying to butter us up?” Izuku whispered by Yui’s ear, his sister giving a brisk nod before Himi stepped forward, giving him a wide smile that had light glinting off her long canine teeth.

“That won’t work on us, good try though!” She leaned forward, her hands behind her back as she rocked a bit on the balls of her feet. “I just wanted to say, if you ever hurt my big brother, I will hurt you. Dabi-nii protected me when we had nowhere else to go to. He kept me safe...and he still does. And you are the first person I’ve ever seen him look all starry-eyed over. So, if you break his heart, if you mess with him, if you ever make him feel less than what he is-” The girl that came up to the hero’s chin stepped forward, amber eyes glinting with a dark promise of pain that almost made him step back from her.

“I will drain you of every drop of blood you have, chop you up into itty bitty pieces and then scatter those pieces all over Japan. Then, I will use your blood to take your form and pretend to be you and completely ruin your life so people will be cursing your name long after you’re dead.”

Hawks paled a bit as he lifted his hands, “Dang...you really don’t pull your punches, do you?” He tried to chuckle, the sound dry and entirely too awkward.

“Not when it comes to my family.” With that the dark look in her eyes was gone, snuffed out like it hadn’t even been there at all. “Anyway, I’m sure you wouldn’t do anything to hurt our big brother! You’re up, Izu-chan!” She grinned as she slapped his shoulder, shoving him forward.

Izuku stumbled a bit, giving her a playful glare before looking up at Hawks and giving him a slightly wobbly smile. “Um...from what I’ve been told, this is customary? I think it’s usually the dad that gives the whole, ‘If you break my kid’s heart, I’ll bury you’ talk? I don’t like to threaten people, really...” Izuku mumbled out as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“It’s okay, kiddo, give me your best shot. I understand the intent behind all of...this.” The hero let out a small chuckle, but he seemed to relax a bit at the youngest’s nervousness.

Izuku took a deep breath before he squared his shoulders, emerald eyes seeming to glow in the fading light as the sun started its descent. “Dabi-nii is one of the strongest people I know, I really look up to him...but I know he’s been hurt before and he’s still trying to overcome that. So, if you hurt him, I will dig up every little secret I can, I will compile every weakness, and I will start spreading that information online. I’m sure that’s something that you’d like to avoid, since you’re a top ten hero and villains must be itching for information on how to take you down.” He finished with one of his blinding smiles, the pressure that had been building with his words dissipating as he stepped back.

“Izuku’s talents lie in picking apart heroes, Quirks...so the threat isn’t empty!” Himi giggled, the sound a little manic before they heard Yamada calling for them. “Oops, we gotta get inside.”

“You two go on, I won’t take long.” Yui smiled softly, ruffling their hair as they walked back inside and leaving the two alone. Her smile faded as she turned to him, tilting her head just a bit as she studied him. “Just so you know, I deactivated anything electronic that I didn’t recognize, so your phone is currently off.”

The hero blinked, “Huh...I didn’t notice.”

“You were pretty preoccupied with getting introduced to everyone. Look, I’m not good with beating around the bush. I prefer a straight, head-on approach. So, let me be blunt. I know how deeply entrenched with the Commission you are...you basically owe your hero career to them. And you should probably tell them to buff up their security if a child can get past their defenses without getting caught.”

Hawks had stilled as he met darkened teal eyes, his wings poofing out a bit as he stared at her. “I have no idea what you mean by that.”

She snorted softly as she rolled her eyes, “Sure. I don’t trust you completely, Hawks. And it’s mostly because I don’t trust the Commission. So, I really hope you realize how lucky you are that Dabi truly cares for you. But I’ll be keeping an eye on you, and if I think you’re just using him, well, I know how to make people disappear. And you’ll never see me coming, hero.”

Hawks narrowed his eyes at her, a false smirk curling his lips to try to hide how unnerved he really was. These kids really were intimidating, he wondered if Dabi had a side like this too. “Compared to the others, your threat doesn’t seem that bad, kid.”

Yui felt her lips curl into a feral grin, her eyes glowing as she stepped closer to him and she couldn’t help but be satisfied when he took a minute step back before he paused. “Oh, that wasn’t a threat, Keigo. I don’t deal in petty threats. I deal in promises. Threats are so empty...and I follow through on what I promise. Because I will do anything to protect my family, even if it means I have to get my hands dirty.”

Hawks slowly nodded, his face a blank mask but she could see that his feathers were still ruffled. “I understand perfectly...I just want to say, I really like Dabi. Getting to spend time with him...even if it’s just an hour means so much to me, he’s the first one I text in the morning, and before I go to bed. It might have started out as a fling, but I really care about him, and I would never hurt him on purpose.”

Yui’s eyes held his, searching and yet not finding any deception. She nodded slowly and gave him a gentle smile, “Thanks for hearing us out, Hawks. I know getting threatened with bodily harm isn’t the best way to get introduced to a family. I hope we haven’t scared you off.”

“Oh, pfft! What’s some little threats between friends? Dabi says Himi comes at him with a knife for fun.” He chuckled as he waved his hand dismissively. “Seriously, you can’t scare me off that easy, I’m not a pushover.”

“I’m glad to hear that, Dabi needs someone strong to stand beside him. I hope you’ll protect him for me when we’re not there.” Yui blinked, trying not to stiffen up when he ruffled her hair, that easy-going smile back on his face.

“Of course, though I think Dabi is pretty good at handling himself. I watched him toss some perv onto the street like it was nothing! It’s too bad he doesn’t wanna be a hero.” He grinned as he started to walk past her.

Yui chuckled softly as she followed him back inside, “He’s already a hero to us, you know?”

“Oh, don’t tell him that, Dabi hates the mushy stuff.”

“He’s the biggest softie. He secretly loves it, he just won’t admit it because it messes with his ‘image’” She did air quotes, “Seriously, he’ll get all misty eyed if you send him pictures of things you see during your day, and that they made you think of him. He’s a total sap under the dark clothes and spikes.”

“Ooohh, you’re gonna help me woo him? What happened to the scary vibes?” Hawks teased.

“Oh, it’s still there. But of course, I’d give you some pointers, Kami knows Dabi wouldn’t admit it. You should get to know Himi better since they live together. And you’ll see her more. She likes to prank Dabi, and prank in general. So, if she pranks you, at least she likes you.” Yui shrugged, before she smiled fondly.

“Haha, then I hope she pranks me.”

“You say that, but ten thousand yen she covers your wings in glitter.”

“Kid, I would look fabulous. Bet it’d give me more publicity.”

“I’ll tell her to use pink then.”
