32. New Rooms

“Can we see them yet?” Izuku called out, he saw sprawled out on the couch, his head hanging off the arm rest as he ran a hand through Latte’s fur as she curled up on his chest. Yui was sitting cross legged on the floor, a tiny screwdriver held between her fingers as she assembled a keyboard the size of a smart phone. She was building a pocket computer, sure, she could hack into things via her phone, but she liked to use her laptop a lot more.

“We’re almost done~” Yamada called out.

“You said that two hours ago!” He groaned pouting up at the ceiling as Yui chuckled.

“You just want to see what they’re doing to the bedroom.”

“Don’t you?! They said it was a surprise and we couldn’t see our rooms until they were done! We slept in a cuddle pile last night!”

“You love cuddle piles, we stayed up going through the photo albums. Yamada made hot chocolate and we took turns playing music.”

“I know! It was so nice!” He couldn’t help but giggle, “But I wanna see what they’re doing...hey...maybe we can-”

“We are not going to use the grappling braces to peek into the windows.” She interrupted him, pointing her screwdriver at him as he pouted.

“But-”

“No buts. Your hand is still healing, you little gremlin. We are going to be good teenagers and stay here and wait for them to tell us we can go see.” Yui kept her voice firm, raising an eyebrow at him, “Just try to hold yourself back. The surprise will be worth it.”

He gave her puppy dog eyes but nodded, “Okay...” He looked up at the ceiling, blowing a puff of air to get his bangs out of his face. Latte purred as she rubbed her face against his chin. “At least someone still loves me.”

“Oi, you brat. I love you and you know it. I just don’t want you to ruin your own surprise.” She huffed, tweaking another piece into place.

“Okay kiddos! Are you ready?” Yamada grinned as he did jazz hands, “Come on up to see your brand new rooms designed by your two favorite pro heroes!”

Izuku grinned as he held Latte to his chest before he stood up, bouncing in place, “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

“Oh thank Kami.” Yui groaned as she put her pieces into a small plastic tote, putting the lid on so the cats wouldn’t play with them. She got to her feet, dusting off her hands, “Let’s start with Izu’s.”

“This way, my young wards!” Yamada boomed out, his voice almost imitating All Might’s enough to make Izuku giggle as they followed him upstairs. There were two doors on the right side of the hallway, both had dry eraser boards. The one closest to the stairs had Izuku’s name on it in green graffiti letters, with little magnets stuck to it of different heroes. Aizawa was leaning against the wall, getting off it with a groan.

“I really hope our neighbors didn’t hear you.”

“If they did, they’ll know we are the coolest neighbors.” Yamada grinned as Aizawa rolled his eyes.

“Or we’ll get noise complaints.” He gestured to Izuku, “Go ahead, problem child. It’s all yours.”

With a squeak Izuku quickly opened the door, going inside with wide eyes. The walls were painted a spring green, the hardwood floors had a soft dark green rug by the bed. The walls had his posters of different heroes, ranging from older heroes like Crimson Riot, or a younger version of Recovery Girl, to newer ones like Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady, they even had put up his custom Eraserhead poster beside his Present Mic one. The walls that didn’t have posters were taken up with bookshelves, holding the different books they’d brought back from their old apartment, and some new ones on Quirk Theory he was already itching to read. His figures of different heroes were also proudly displayed on the shelves along with some of his vigilante gear.

His bed was the same one from the old apartment, with a black blanket with yellow stars- they’d found it while shopping and it’d made them think of their pseudo fathers a year or so ago. But what caught Izuku’s eye was the fairy lights strung up along the walls, in the shapes of stars, those and the one corner of the room that had a giant fuzzy green bean bag in the corner, and on it were all sorts of plush toys.

Yamada chuckled softly, “Sorry...I was just trying to find one or two that I thought you’d like...and I got carried away.” He rubbed the back of his head, a bashful smile on his face as he watched the teenager.

“You found an Eraserhead plush!? And a Present Mic?!” He grinned as he pulled the two from the pile, “It’s so hard to find good merch of a certain someone.”

Yamada grinned, “A friend of mine was nice enough to make them for me. And you should take a look in the closet.”

Izuku grinned, putting the plush toys on his bed before he slid the door opened, his eyes widening as he immediately yanked out a black hoodie that had a gray scarf like design on the hood and chest, the hood even had Eraserhead’s signature goggles printed on it. “This is amazing!”

Yui grinned as Aizawa ducked his face into his capture weapon, but she could see the pink tint on the tip of his ears. “Oh come on, you know you’re one of his favorite heroes. And he already had a Present Mic hoodie.”

“My friend has a Quirk that lets her pull creations out of drawings. It’s pretty useful in the merch business because it turns it to fabric.” Yamada grinned, “And down here is a secret.” He knelt down, pulling on a hidden handle to lift up a black metal safe with a keypad, “You can change the code, but you said your notebooks have some special information in them. So it’s best to be protected, right?”

Izuku blinked, his eyes shining with tears before he tackled the older man in a hug, “Thank you so much!”

Yamada chuckled as he hugged him back, “It was our pleasure, green bean, we wanted you to feel at home.”

“If you want to change anything, feel free to do-”

“No! It’s perfect!” Izuku grinned up at Aizawa, “I-I love it just how it is. Thank you.” The tired man gave him a soft smile as he ruffled his curls.

“Are you ready to see your room, Yui?” The blonde asked, looking at the girl as she was looking through his shelf, she blinked back the memories as she nodded.

“Sure, Yamadad. Show me what you got.”

He grinned as he picked Izuku up, making him giggle as he led the way to the room right next to the green bean’s. Her erase board had her name in blue with little designs of wires and circuitry. The two of them looked at her expectantly, Izuku almost looked as excited to see her room as he did his own.

She chuckled softly before she opened the door and stepped inside, Yamada and Izuku right behind her. Her furniture was all black metal, from the desk to the bed frame and the shelves in the room. The walls were a soft teal color, blueprints on the walls that were arranged almost exactly how they were in her old room. Her shelves had her books and her gear on them, and bins labeled with different parts or tools. There were two desks in the room, the smaller holding her laptop and the setup she used for gaming, the larger desk by the window was sturdier, and had some of the almost finished projects she’d been working on at home before the move.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“We wanted to make sure you had your own space to work on your support gear…I hope we didn’t ruin anything.” Yamada was fidgeting as he watched her pick up the hearing aid she’d been working on. “Sho made sure there’s a fire extinguisher under the desk.”

She let out a little chuckle, “Hopefully we got one in each room.”

“Izuku’s is under his desk too.” Aizawa spoke up, “If you need another, just ask, but please don’t purposefully set things on fire.”

“I won’t try to, but thank you for not having anything made of wood in here.” Yui grinned, turning to look at the bed, the bedspread black with geometric teal patterns. She saw a lump by the pillows, but before she could pull them back Yamada was stepping forward.

“Oh! Nemuri picked out some outfits for you, they’re in your closet. She picked some outfits for you too, green bean.”

“Oh cool! I can’t wait to see what she picked out.” Izuku grinned, heading back to his room. He flashed Yui his sunshine smile and two thumbs up.

She chuckled softly as she gave him one back, “We’ll have to thank her…Thank you so much you guys…this is…it’s amazing.” Her voice did not crack, nope, not even a little.

“You’re welcome, Livewire.” Yamada smiled wide as he ruffled her hair, pulling her into a hug.

She scoffed a laugh, “Livewire?”

“What? If you don’t like my nickname, I’ll think of a different one.”

“And it’ll be worse.” Aizawa called out, his husband pouting at him before he stuck his tongue out.

“Well, it’s a good thing I like Livewire then, huh?” She grunted a bit as Yamada hugged her tighter.

“See Sho? Not everyone hates my nicknames! Maybe you just have bad taste.”

“Well, I did marry you.” Came the deadpan reply.

She gasped, “That was mean!” She had to fight the twitch of her lips, giving him a stern look as Yamada gasped theatrically, a hand on his chest.

“Do you see how he treats me? If we didn’t have the cats, I’m not sure how I’d get any love.” He gave a fake sniffle, crocodile tears in his eyes.

“…Do you ever feel like Scar from the Lion King?” Aizawa asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Like a homicidal egomaniac?” Yui asked, “Sometimes, but I try to hide it, have I been failing?”

“Like an asshole who turned on his own brother?”

“No…I was referring to the scene where he said, ‘I’m surrounded by idiots.’” He said before he turned to walk out of the room.

“Shoooo! Come back! You know I didn’t mean it!” Yamada rushed after him, Yui couldn’t help but chuckle when she heard a thump, already envisioning the blonde glomping onto the insomniac.

She walked over to the bed, her curiosity getting the best of her as she pulled the blanket down to finally see what was making the lump. She blinked, looking down at the two plush toys on the bed, one of Present Mic and Eraserhead, just like the ones Izuku had. Her lips curled into a smile as warmth bloomed in her chest. Yeah, this place was already feeling like home.

----------------------------------------

“Come on, brat! You can’t pass out yet, it’s only been an hour.” Voltage taunted before a fresh wave of pain spiked up his arm and ripping a scream from his throat as his eyes snapped open. Glowing vermillion eyes met emerald, teeth bared in a wolfish sneer, “Your sister still has two hours, you gotta make this entertaining for me! Or I might get bored and then your precious big sister will be all alone.”

The scene shifted…Izuku was staring into another pair of vermillion eyes, the smell of smoke in his nose and burns radiating along his back. “Give it up, Deku! A Quirkless loser like you will never be a hero! You’ll never amount to anything, you’re just a useless waste of space!”

Hands around his neck, his lungs burning for air as black spots filled his vision, the sweet melody in his ears were chains that kept him immobile until it was ripped away and he could finally pull air throat his bruised throat.

A firm grip on his arm as ice churned through his veins, his whole body trembling as he looked up at the black haired woman Yui-nee had called ‘mother’. The girl that had been like a sister to him held up by her hair, her body still hunched from the blow to the stomach, and he could see the fear that shone in those teal eyes that had moments ago been filled with warmth as they joked.

“The yakuza will pay a pretty penny for Quirkless kids, the younger the better, for their experiments.” The man that had grabbed him droned out.

“And then there’s Sensei.” The woman’s voice made him feel even colder, and whoever she was talking about couldn’t be good. Not with the way Yui-nee’s body tensed, her eyes widening at the name. “He’s been looking for them too. Something about them being a good base material. Maybe we could hold an auction?”

Then the flash of glowing teal had the dream shifting again, he was back by the docks, teal sparks jumping off his sister’s body as she screamed, his body moving toward her and those sparks zeroing on him-

Izuku’s eyes snapped open as he jolted to a sitting position, cold sweat soaking through his shirt as his body ran with tremors. The glow coming from the fairy lights wasn’t a comfort as he threw off the comforter with a disgruntled meow from Bean, his yellow eyes blinking up at him. Izuku bit down on his lip as he scooped the cat into his arms, fingers smoothing over his silky fur as he got to his feet and stumbled from his room.

He hesitated in front of Yui-nee’s door, reaching out with a hand that was still heavily wrapped in bandages. It was just a nightmare…I’m fine, I don’t need to wake her up- He slowly pulled his hand away only for the cat in his arms to start yowling. He squeaked, almost dropping him in his panic.

“Bean! Shhh, you’re going-“

“Izu?” He froze as her door opened, looking up to see Yui-nee squinting at him, her hair spiked out in disarray. “Is something wrong?” His eyes filled with tears and he wrapped his arms around her as Bean quickly jumped on top of his head to avoid being squished. Her arms came up to hold him close even as she stumbled back. “Green bean? Are you in pain? Do you want Aizawa? Yamada?”

A sob escaped him, his hand fisting into her shirt as he clung to her, “I…I don’t wanna be alone…” He choked out. Her hand rubbed circles against his back, and the cat in his curls let out a soft rumbling purr.

“Izu, green bean, you’re not alone. You’ll never be alone, okay? I’m here…come on.” She guided him into her room, sitting down on the bed and pulling him into her lap, his face pressed against her shoulder. “You got me, and Aizawa and Yamada, Himi and Dabi…Tsuki and Granny. And you got Toshi too. Oh, and Auntie…we’ll never leave you, Izu. Never again, I promise we’ll protect you…”

“Lil listeners? What’s wrong?” Yamada’s soft voice called out as he stumbled into the room, squinting without his glasses.

Izuku sniffled, “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t want to wake up anyone…” He hiccupped, trying to dry his face but the tears kept slipping out.

“Hey, hey, you don’t gotta apologize.” The bed dipped as Yamada sat down beside them, “You can tell me anything, kiddo, no matter what time it is. Do you want Sho? He’s on patrol but if I text him, he’ll come home.”

“No!...no, please…he’s helping people, it was just a nightmare, I’m fine.” He blurted out, pulling back to look up at him with wide eyes. The blonde put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently.

“Okay, green bean. Do you want to talk about it?” At his quick head shake the man nodded, “Alright. How about some hot chocolate? Or I can make tea? Or warm milk and honey, that always helped when I had nightmares.”

Izuku rubbed his eyes again, the tears finally drying, “U-um, m-milk and honey sounds good, i-is it really okay?”

“Of course! Come on.” He bounced up, letting out a yelp when he ran his knee against the nightstand, hobbling back. “Okay…I might need some help getting to the kitchen.”

He couldn’t help but giggle as he slowly stood, his fingers threading with Yui-nee’s and pulling her off the bed with him. She put a hand on his shoulder as they walked down to the kitchen, stopping on their way to grab his glasses. His nightmares fading in the warmth he felt with his family as Yamada and Yui-nee bantered back and forth, pulling more giggles out of him. They were all bundled under blankets on the couch with Moana playing on the TV as they sipped their drinks when Aizawa walked into the room, blinking at them.

“Hey Dadzawa, join the cuddle pile!” Yui-nee called out.

“How was patrol? Are you okay?” Izuku asked, his eyes still red-rimmed and enough proof to the Pro that something had upset him.

“Hey, kiddos. Yeah, I’m fine. Let me just grab some coffee-“

“There’s warm milk on the stove for you, it has honey, kitten~” Yamada hummed at him, the two teens letting out giggles.

“Okay, okay.” He sighed as he shuffled to the kitchen, coming back with a mug and sitting down next to Yui-nee, Izu already in between her and Yamada. “You want to talk about it?” At his head shake he nodded, reaching over to ruffle his curls, or as much as he could with Bean still nestled in them. “We’re here if you do.”

Izuku gave them a smile, a little wobbly with tears pricking his eyes, but still filled with his usual light, “Thanks, Dad!”
