"All right. Time to get evaluated, like the brochure says."
Kiran breathes deeply and takes the brochure with him. He enters hallway H.
A lot of doors are present. There are lights above each door in the long hallway. Each one is red, instead of one at the end which is green. The doorknobs on the red light doors do not turn. He walks towards the green one and this doorknob turns.
The room feels serious. A bland carpet covers the floor. The walls aren't decorated with anything. There are shelves with lots of strange equipment.
There is also a lady with green hair that is swirled up. She is slumping on a metallic desk.
"Ugh. I was enjoying my lunch. I want to get back to the girls."
"Oh. Uhm. Hi."
She lifts her head. She lets out a sigh and puts it back down. "Honestly, I don't have time for this."
Then she bursts back up again.
"Hi, darling! Welcome to Kura Guild's Main Centre! I am here to give you your newborn evaluation! Oh, you must be so excited."
She types at the desk.
"First things first. Are you number 5334?"
"Yes."
"Did you switch numbers with anyone?"
"No."
"Thank goodness," she says under her breath.
Her chair rolls back and she jumps out of it. She sprints through the office towards Kiran. He stands still while her eyes peer all over him.
"Don't be so stiff! Hmm. You feel muscular."
She touches his body all over, squeezing.
Kiran's face warms up. "I haven't been touched by anyone like this before!"
"A bit tight, but all good. Tell me, have you felt or done anything weird since waking up darling?"
"I don't think so. I don't know."
She takes a deep breath and goes back to her desk. "Gosh. This kid isn't making it easy. I want to get this done with."
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"Hmm. All right. Let me see the initial report." The green-haired lady taps at her desk once. Blue shines in front of her, as words and numbers appear on the screen. Kiran can't make much out, but he sees his number 5334 at the top.
The green-haired lady stares at the screen.
"Let's see here. 37 degrees Celsius body temperature. 1.73 metres tall. Low latent SPE rating. Even your brainwaves… everything is below average!"
The screen closes.
"No wonder you are so late! The worst ones are always last!"
Kiran stiffens up again with the sudden change in tone.
"That's not-"
"Listen, I want to end this. Inhale and exhale into my nose." She goes up to Kiran.
"O-Okay…"
He does as she says. Her nose twitches.
"Hmm. I don't smell anything different. Seems normal. Tsk."
She stomps to her desk and slumps inside the chair. She smacks her desk and a blue screen pops up. Kiran sees a star inside a circle.
Each point has a rating. The top rating is E. Both left and right from the top are D. The bottom left and bottom right points do not have ratings.
"What's your desire?"
"I'm sorry?"
"You know. The OmniOne spoke to you about it. Fairly standard. Happens to every newborn who passes The Trials. 4th Law. Hello?"
"Oh… well… I guess…"
Kiran looks down. "I… can't remember."
"Really? Nothing? You have absolutely no desire. Not even wanting to be an animal?"
He thinks about anything that has happened to him so far.
"The OmniOne talked to me? Did I hear something? Chase? But chase doesn't make sense… it means nothing to me. Oh! I chased Garnett I guess?"
Kiran smiles. "I do have something! I want to help people." He beams with excitement.
"That's it! Yes! I want to help people! Like how I helped that girl and Garnett from the bird and-"
She scoffs. "Ugh. Of course. You and 95% of the people of Arkodia. So you have complete amnesia. Typical. If you said you wanted to be selfish at least you would've been somewhat interesting. Absolute trash."
Kiran's smile fades away as she talks. His face becomes paler and paler with each sentence.
Green-hair lady starts tapping on her desk.
Kiran starts to stutter, "I-It's not c-complete amnesia. I-I do remember things. And the brochure the lady gave me said-"
"Yeah, kid. You remember things you have to remember. The basic things."
The bottom left and bottom right points of the star both show an "F" rank.
"However, it is clear you have no recollection of your time during The Trials, which means you have no recollection of what your desire can be, which means you have absolutely NO way of using your gift."
She hits her desk with her fist. It makes a 'BING' noise. A red armband pops out of her desk.
"WHICH MEANS, you are automatically a red rank."
She throws the armband to Kiran. Her sudden rise in tone made Kiran a bit short-breathed. His forehead becomes a bit glossier.
"Already sweating? Jeez. Just get out of my sight."
A door behind her appears. She keeps her finger pointed towards the door until Kiran leaves.
He walks towards the door, keeping his eyes on his armband. When he passes the door, it disappears behind him.
"Red-Rank? I saw it was at the bottom of the brochure… as the weakest rank." Kiran stares and grips his red armband.
"Hi, Kiran!"
Garnett comes from the side. He is wearing a yellow armband. He sees Kiran holding a red one.
"Oh. You were placed as red-rank?"
"Yeah. I see you are yellow-rank."
"Correct. I guess… now we are supposed to join a guild?"
"Right…"
Kiran and Garnett follow the signs above them. The signs read 'Guild Area' and are shaped like arrows. When they open the final door, they both stand in awe.
The 2 newborns observe the large hall in front of them from the highest floor. They both stare at the huge circular room. There are stages, booths and many more stands where orange-clothed people are talking to others. The word "Guild" is present almost everywhere. The sounds of chatter echo loudly through the entire arena.
"Kiran… I do not think I have seen this many people before."
"Yeah. At least we know there were many more on the beach with us."
