Chapter 18: Soul Psyche

Chapter 18: Soul Psyche

Kiran and Israr stare down at the people training. They hear the door open behind them. Easton walks out with his hands in his pockets, looking down.

"Hey. You can go in." Easton does not look up at all. He goes to the window.

"Oh. Okay, Easton. See you, Israr!" Kiran waves and runs into the room.

"See you, Kiran!" Israr waves back. He then turns to Easton. "How was it, Easton? You okay? These mind things can be unusual if you've never done it before." Israr looks down with Easton.

Silence.

"So uh… a bit personal? I get it. My bad."

More silence. Israr fixes his collar.

"These people are running kind of fast huh?"

Easton doesn't react at all.

"I wonder if something happened," thinks Israr. He feels a vibration in his pocket. He takes out a pager and sees he is called.

"I have to go quickly! I'll be right back Easton!"

Again, there's no reaction from Easton. Israr steps back, nervously laughs and goes away.

Inside, Kiran closes the door. "Hi!"

The woman with the white coat turns around in her chair. She has long brown hair. "Hello. Are you the other newborn, blondie?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Are you also from the Harmony Guild?"

"Yes ma'am!" Kiran smiles

"Fascinating…" She writes something down. "A completely different reaction from the previous boy."

She looks at Kiran. "So, I assume you also know nothing about mental gifts, correct?"

"Yes!"

"All right. I'm not going to be as rough then. Please come here." The white coat lady gestures towards the couches.

"Okay! You look a lot like the person I saw at the uh… what was its name?" Kiran sits down on the couch. Comfy.

"The Kura Guild?" says the lady and sits across him.

"Yes! That one."

"Well, I once was in that guild."

"Really?!"

"Yes. My gift is too good for that place, so I went on to another guild."

"Whoa! Are you also going to smell my breath?"

"Not even close. But I might be a bit more intrusive."

"What do you mean?"

"My gift involves infiltrating the hippocampus."

"The hippopotamus?" A big purple hippo appears in Kiran's mind.

"No. The hippocampus. It's a part of the brain which handles a few different functions of the human body."

"Okay…"

"One of those functions is your memories. The hippocampus is responsible for that."

"I see. So you're a brain lady!"

"Why is this the nickname people come up for me?" Brain-lady hangs her shoulders. "Sigh. Yes. Simply put, I am a brain lady."

"That sounds incredible. So you can read people's minds?"

"Not necessarily. I can only see the memories the brain keeps. I can't read people's minds." Brain-Lady scooches closer and opens her hands so that her palms face the ceiling. "Please place your hands on mine. I will enter your mind by syncing our soul potential energy."

"O-Okay…" Kiran puts his hands on hers.

"Nervous? Don't be. I'm a blue-rank analyser. I might not be the highest, but I'm exceptional. Otherwise, Sharmeija wouldn't hire me." Brain-Lady closes her eyes and takes deep breaths. "So no need to be scared. Relax for me."

"I-It's not that I'm scared…" Kiran closes his eyes, but his body feels fidgety. He's unable to focus.

"Then what is it?"

"I-I…" Kiran's face gets warm. "I don't think I've held a girl's hand before."

"…" Brain-Lady starts to think. "I am having trouble entering his mind. Is it because of his innocence? Hmm. I need a crack. A fluctuation in Positive Energy should do the trick."

She looks at Kiran. "Look at me blondie."

"Huh?" Kiran opens his eyes.

"You have pretty blue eyes."

"W-What?"

"Now close your eyes and focus."

Kiran nods and closes his eyes quickly.

Brain-Lady chuckles and closes her eyes. She focuses hard. "Come on, come on!" Lines and lines of energy flow through her mind. She sees a line and locks on it. "Got you! Sync!"

Brain-Lady's eyes open, but not in the real world. She looks around. It's dark, but she can see. "All right. I made it in."

"Where the heck are we?!" Kiran's voice echoes loudly. He stands next to Brain-Lady.

"We are in your Soul Psyche, a personal mental dimension."

"My what? Soul Psyche?" Kiran looks around. There's nothing. He can't even see the bottom. "Why are we on water?"

"Don't worry. We are safe. I've done this thousands of times." Brain-Lady walks on the water and thinks, "Although… I don't think I have encountered someone recently with such a large Psyche. The water is calm, so we are safe."

She turns to Kiran. "I use my Soul Potential Energy to link with your mind. That's why we are in the Soul Psyche, a gateway mental analysers use to enter the specific parts of the brain we can access. Quite a difficult skill really."

"That sounds very confusing. I don't understand."

"Well, I can see there's not much going on in your mind," thinks Brain-Lady. Kiran scurries behind her as they walk.

"Ah, here we go."

"What's that?"

A scene where people are running and training plays in the sky.

Kiran points towards it. "Hey! That's what I saw before coming in here. The people training."

"Correct. We are in the Soul Psyche, but specifically, waves from the hippocampus are channelled here. This is your short-term memory."

"This is amazing! You can see what I've seen?!"

"Yes."

Kiran freezes. "Wait… even when I used the bathroom?"

"I don't think your mind will choose to keep those memories. Only if you think… really hard about it."

The scene before Kiran used the bathroom last night at Harmony starts to play.

"Come. Let's go. Before we see too much."

The deeper they go, the more memories play. Brain-Lady sees what Kiran has been doing for his first week. When she gets to the time when Meba, the bald man who attacked them when they were travelling to Harmony, appears, she stands still. Small ripples of water disperse.

"Hmm. There seems to be a strong reaction here." She watches the memory.

"Whoa! This is what happened to me a week ago. That wasn't fun."

"I see you and the brown-haired boy have travelled with each other a bit. I saw this with the boy as well."

"Yeah. Look! Easton stands up to the bald man. I don't know how he was able to move. I struggled a lot. The bald guy used his gift on us."

"I see that. You were still able to move and…" The time replays when Kiran head-butts Meba. The water ripples strengthen when this happens. A rumbling sound rattles throughout the Psyche.

"Is something happening?" Kiran looks around.

"Yes. It seems this is a triggering memory." She taps her chin. "Interesting. That was him using his gift. I can feel the fluctuation in Soul Potential Energy. And the water is reacting to it. I need to confirm though…"

Brain-Lady walks on. "Let's keep moving."

"O-Okay…"

She sees Kiran joining Harmony, and then his evaluation. "What a rookie. You can see she slacked with this one."

Brain-Lady pushes further.

"Who's this blonde boy?"

"That's Garnett!"

"I saw he joined Harmony too as a yellow-rank, with a pretty good gift as well. He could receive a lot of creditation with a gift like that. So this is where you met him?"

"Yeah… I feel like he only joined Harmony because of me…" Kiran looks down. "I hope he doesn't regret it."

"I see."

The water ripples again. Brain-Lady watches. "Hmm. This can't be triggering… he doesn't know him yet. A brother perhaps?"

Again, in the memory, Kiran suddenly moves from one point to another and blocks the crow's strike.

"Can you tell me what's happening here blondie?"

"No… I. Even though I can see it… I can't explain it. I just remember wanting to be there to protect Garnett."

"Do you know him?"

"Not at this point… why's the water like this again? You said we are safe if it is calm! This isn't calm."

The water forms slight waves.

"Correct. It seems your Soul Potential Energy is reacting to your Mental Energy used to process these memories. Very interesting. Let's go further. I need to confirm your desire."

"But I don't know what my desire is."

"Don't worry. I've seen many newborns' desires. This is how I got my name out there. I'm able to tap into Arkodians' memories. Even the time when they talked to the OmniOne."

Brain-lady thinks, "Although it takes a lot of effort. Luckily the previous kid didn't take too much energy."

"I can't remember talking to the OmniOne."

"That's what you told that green-haired lady. But don't worry. This is a long-term memory. A core memory which Arkodians do not forget. Sometimes it's locked away due to various reasons, but it is there. One word is enough."

Kiran and Brain-Lady walk. The water flows over their feet. Brain-Lady looks around the Psyche. "Even pushing past his short-term memories, there's still so much space here. What is this kid's mental energy capability? His gift is physical based… yet he has this much space? Is this because of his amnesia?"

"B-Brain-Lady… what's that?" asks Kiran.

"I guess we've found the place. It seems the memory is locked away." Brain-Lady squints, "Is that the reason for his amnesia?"

A black lock, with countless chains over it, blocks the 2 from going any further down Kiran's Soul Psyche.
