Chapter Three: The First Battle (Part 1)

Vincent sat in the seat with the cockpit wide open. Anna stood next to him, instructing him on what to do. Vincent places the base reader on the console. The clear screen of the reader turned dark and blue words appeared on it.

Anna spoke to Vincent, "Alright, now try to move it just like how I told you.” Vincent nods, "Here goes nothing.” The thrusters on the manta-ray on the frame’s back flared and it leaped into the air before landing on its feet on the hard desert surface. Trying to get the hand of the controls, Vincent ran across the field. Seeing that Vincent was okay by himself, Anna closed the door to the cockpit and went inside her own. She enters the battlefield and quickly catches up to Vincent.

A screen suddenly appears on Vincent’s right. It was Anna contacting him. "It looks like you’re getting the hang of moving a frame. Still, whoever assembled this thing must be quite experienced. The design is exquisite even with the oversized seafood on the back.”

Anna marveled at the appearance of the frame and muttered, "For a warrior type, it’s not bad. The sleek underwater-esque design in addition to its blue, yellow, and turquoise colors, make it a decent underwater frame. Despite the manta-ray appearance, this backpack grants the frame flight and space combat capabilities." "How about we try something else next,” Anna told Vincent what to do and he pressed a few buttons, and the robot began to hover. The two thrusters on the manta-ray came to life and lifted Mantaraia off the ground. He hovered around the battlefield for a while before landing on the ground. An alert then came in and the camera zoomed in a position in the sky.

Rosenkavalier leaped onto a large rock, “Alright Vincent, how about you try taking down the enemy unit. You should have a primary ranged weapon with you. Try rolling the ball-like thing on your joystick. It’ll let you change slots.” Vincent did as he was told and a small indicator appeared at the bottom of the main screen. It displayed the weapons selection screen. Vincent scrolled to the right until it reached the primary long-range weapon, ‘Depth Launcher’. The frame reached out its hand and grabbed the weapon from the side of its thigh. Its appearance was a cross between a rifle and a rocket launcher. It was bigger than a rifle but not as big as a rocket launcher.

The simulation enemy frame began firing beams from its rifle the moment Vincent was within range. To retaliate, Vincent pulled the trigger on the joystick, which in turn made the Frame pull the trigger on its weapon. Vincent maneuvered the Mantaraia to avoid the beam attacks. As he dodged, he fired his weapon, and missiles were launched from the Depth Launcher.

After a few exchanges of shots, Vincent finally hits his target enough to destroy the enemy unit. With the destruction of the simulation enemy, the mechanical voice spoke along with a notification that appeared on the main screen. “WARFRAME Battle Ended. Simulation Over.” Vincent watched as Mantaraia disappeared before the screen turned to black and the lights in the cockpit dimmed. Vincent removed the base reader from the panel and exited the cockpit.

Anna greeted Vincent the moment he stepped out of the cockpit, "So, how was it? Was it better than playing FPS games?” Vincent comments, "It was great, but hard to say yet. I need more of a challenge before I can confirm anything.” Ann picks up the base reader for Mantaraia from the table and hands it over to Vincent. "Now put Mantaraia back into its original base reader.”

Just as Vincent was about to do so, he fumbled around with cards, and both base readers and the cards fell to the ground. Vincent went down to pick it up and Anna helped. As they were picking up the cards and readers, they looked up and realized how close their faces were. Both of their cheeks turned red. The two of them distanced themselves before turning around and having their backs to each other.

“What are you doing? What the heck are the two of you doing?” An enraged voice came from the door. Vincent and Anna both turned to the entrance to the club room where the source of the voice was and saw a bespectacled young man standing at the entrance. His expression was full of anger and rage. “What are you two doing? Come with me, now.”

Anna and Vincent followed the bespectacled youth to a room that was several rooms away from the WARFRAME Club room. He told Vincent and Anna to sit on the sofa at the edge of the room near the window, while he sat on a chair near a desk.

The bespectacled youth eyed Vincent and Anna, but mainly Vincent. He thought to himself "How dare this guy try to mooch in, in my territory. Anna’s my girl. Just a year or so more effort and she’ll be mine. How could I allow a nobody like you to swoop in and take my girl? But I need to play it cool. I can't have Anna notice my eagerness." He then said, "I see… So that was just an accident. I’m relieved. Anyway, are you a new member of the WARFRAME Club? From what I can tell, you look like you don’t have any experience in either battling or assembling.”

The bespectacled youth turned his attention to Anna. "Anna, are you seriously thinking of entering the WARFRAME Battle Championship with this newb? I think even Frank would be a little apprehensive about taking a total newb to a competition such as the championships as part of his team.” Anna glared at the bespectacled youth, "Do you have a problem with Vincent? Sure he’s a newb now but I think he can become a great WARFRAME pilot given enough time.” Vincent comments, "I’m right here guys. Stop calling me a newb.”

The bespectacled youth ignored the comment from Vincent and turned his attention back on Anna, "You’ll only be embarrassing yourselves by going through with this farce.” Vincent was irritated by the tone the bespectacled youth was taking. "Who are you to talk to? You just came out of nowhere. Who the heck are you, anyway?”

The bespectacled youth answered with a smug, "I’m the president of the Tabletop and Card Collection Committee, Danny Mitchell. You better watch that tongue of yours, especially when talking to your seniors.” Vincent responds arrogantly to Danny’s smug face, "You should be rude to rude people. That’s what my grandpa taught me.” Danny scoffs, "You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk. I’m sure there’d be nothing wrong if we were say, to settle this little dispute in a WARFRAME Battle. You are strong enough to put up an actual fight, right?”

Vincent answers with confidence in his abilities, "Wanna try me?” Danny smirks, "Of course, I know a thing or two about battling.” Anna then interrupts Danny and Vincent’s battle of words as she slams her hands on the desk in between them. "Wait a minute. Vincent just started WARFRAME today. You can’t really expect him to go up against someone like you.”

Danny sneers and turns to Anna, "There are only two more months until the qualifiers. You don’t have enough free time to be so laid back, do you?” Anna was upset with the turn of events, "Then, I’ll also participate in this battle.” Anna turns to Vincent, "I’ll be your backup in this, Vincent.” Anna glares at Danny, 'Is that okay with you?” Danny answers with a smug, 'Sure, go right ahead.”
