Chapter Fourteen: Card Cabin

Chapter Fourteen: Card Cabin

Mister Myers huffed to get the trio’s attention, “Now that I’ve seen what all of you are capable of. I can honestly say that Vincent is the weak link among the three of you.” Vincent was shocked by what their faculty advisor had just said, “What do you mean I’m the weak link?” Mister Myers coughed, and Vincent apologized, “Sorry for interrupting. Please go on.” Mister Myers eyed Vincent for interrupting him, “As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted. It is made apparently clear that Vincent is the weak link in this group. In order to remedy this situation, I am giving you an assignment, Vincent.”

Vincent was confounded, “An Assignment?” Mister Myers nods, “Yes, an assignment. Over the weekend, I want you to assemble your own Warframe and train inside The Nexus. All of you must be ready by the time the qualifiers start.” Vincent did not completely understand the assignment, but Mister Myers then observed Justin and Anna, “And the two of you are going to help him. Anna, being a local should know the location of the closest Warframe shop. So take Vincent and Justin there so they can better prepare for the qualifiers.”

After another day of school passed by, and the weekend came. It was Saturday. Anna had made plans for Vincent and Justin. They were supposed to meet at the school gates at 10:30 am. Both Anna and Justin arrived in front of the school gates at the appointed time. However, Vincent was five minutes late. Justin glared at Vincent, “You’re late.” Vincent apologizes, “Sorry, but Maya made me help her with her workout. So, Anna, where are we going?”

Anna stretched her body before heading out, “We are headed to Card Cabin. Come on, follow me. The store is just a couple of blocks from here.” The trio continued walking with Anna taking the lead. After passing a playground, and several shop lots, they arrived at their destination. It was a mid-sized shop with red bricks on the outside and a colorful sign on top that read ‘Card Cabin’.

Anna walks in and the bell above the door rings, alerting the shop of new arrivals. Vincent and Justin stood outside and looked through the window and saw plenty of posters of varying designs. Some looked like monsters, some looked like knights and dragons, while others looked like aliens. But the most number of posters that had been hung on the walls were those of WARFRAME. Justin and Vincent push the door open and walked in.

Inside the store were several tables with chairs, and some people were playing card games. Anna proceeded to the counter, “Hey, Shawn, got any new cards for me?” The store clerk, a man in his mid-thirties with red hair who wore a green shirt underneath his white apron greeted Anna. “Hey, Anna, How’s Frank?” Anna smiled, “Better”, to which the store clerk replied, “That’s good to hear. I hope he makes a full recovery and you guys can go for the championship again, as long as you can get a third, of course.”

Anna chuckled, “About that, we already have a third and a fourth. Actually, that’s why I’m here.” Anna then turns to Vincent and Justin and waves them over, “Guys, come over here for a sec.” Justin and Vincent walked towards the counter after Anna called them over, “Guys, this is Shawn Austin. He is the manager of this place. If you need any help with WARFRAME, then he is the go-to guy here. He knows all about the game. Vincent, he should be able to help you assemble a good frame.”

Vincent was glad and astounded at the same time. “Really. You can really help me assemble my frame?” Shawn nods, “Sure, what kind of frame are you intending to assemble. I’ve got the card packs you need. Just buy a few and we can work on what best suits you. You want the starter packs or the new packs. Let me tell you this, most of the new packs at least require one or two parts from the starter packs.”

Shawn then pointed to the boxes of card packs under the glass counter. He showed Vincent several of them and also gave him his recommendations for beginners. Justin on the other hand only asked for the latest packs. He bought a few of them and took a seat at the nearest empty table. Vincent looked through all of his options and took a few packs from each set of booster cards. Just as Vincent was about to pay for his purchase, Anna stopped him.

Anna turned toward Shawn, “Shawn, do you have a reader? I also need to register Vincent. The one I lent him was a spare and an old model at that. I need a new one. Also, could you register Vincent while you’re at it? The account I made for him was a guest account. I need him to have an actual user account.” Shawn nods, “Not a problem. Vincent can just pay for the stuff. And while he is busy assembling his frame, I can prepare an account for him.” Shawn then hands Vincent a piece of paper and a pen, “Vincent, I need you to fill in this form with your details so that I can register you. And after you finish assembling your frame, I can help you modify it if you want.”

Vincent paid for everything he had bought and he and Anna sat at Justin’s table. Justin was about to open his last pack when they sat down. Justin opens the pack, “So, did you guys get everything settled? Because I want to go inside the Nexus.” Anna answers, “All we have to do now is to assemble Vincent’s frame and wait for Shawn to finish his registration.” Upon opening the last pack, Justin did not find anything suitable he could use for his Mantaraia. Vincent on the other hand opened all the packs and arranged them according to the pack he opened.

He then noticed that there were several different types of frames. He then asks Anna, “Why do these frames look so different? I mean a few of them look a bit like Justin’s Cestus while others look like Mantaraia’s main body and your Rosenkavalier Anna.” Ann looked at the cards Vincent had arranged on the table and understood what Vincent was trying to say. Justin then spoke, “Right, you didn’t know.” Vincent asks, “Didn’t know what?” Then Anna steps in, “Didn’t know that there were several frame types.”

Justin then clarified, “In order to cater to the wants and needs of the masses, several frame types were designed to give variety to the game. Each individual will choose one of the frames as their ideal type. There are five basic frame types. I say basic because there are people who mix and match these basic types in order to suit their needs. The five basic types are Warrior, Angel, Champion, Panzer, and Savage.” Anna then goes on to explain the different types, “Warriors types are generally frames that have a medium build body with a sleek design that is suitable for adding armor and attachments. This type of frame allows for easy modifications. Compared to the champion frame, it is not as powerful but makes up for it with agility, speed, and equipment. The Angel frame emphasized speed while the Champion frame emphasized power. The Warrior frame on the other hand emphasizes more on balance.”

Justin then goes on to explain about the other frames. “As for the Champion frame, it is a frame with a large build with wide shoulders and chest with thick stalky arms and legs. The arms and legs appear as strong as tree trunks. The entire thing resembled a heavyweight wrestler. They're the most suited to act as tanks or artillery since they are the best for equipping heavy weapons. Just like my backup frame, Cestus. As for the Panzer type, the thing is basically like a tank. You see, compared to the other frame types, the panzer frame has tank treads instead of legs. The upper body of the panzer frame is a combination of champion and warrior. It is bulkier than a warrior frame but not as stalky as a champion frame. This frame allows for fast movement on various land terrain. Its speed is unmatched on a flat surface. Another version of the panzer frame has a hover pad in place of tank threads. By levitating over the ground, it allows for faster and farther movement. It can also fly as compared to the tank threads. Its manoeuver ability is increased in space battles.” Vincent was then surprised by the last thing that Justin said, “Space battles?” And Justin answers his question, “Yeah, space battles. To make things more interesting, the game designers made space one of the battlefields. Actually, it’s the most popular battlefield.”

Anna then interrupts to further explain about the type of frames, “Let’s set the matter of space aside for now and continue with the frame types. How about I tell you about the Angel frame. This frame has a smooth sleek design with slender legs and a petite waist. The concave torso, sloping breastplate, thin limbs, and narrow head made it look like a supermodel. It's sort of the ideal female body. My Rosenkavalier uses this frame type, and it is the most popular among girls. As for the savage type, well, it basically focuses on a more animalistic aspect. It is a bipedal animal standing on two legs. The animal-like legs allow it ease of movement on most terrains. Most of this type of frame possess claws on their hands and feet which allows them to deal great damage in close-range attacks, even without weapons. The model of this frame varies depending on the animal that it is based on. Part of its animalistic feature is the animal head and other beast-like attributes. Mister Myers frame is a good example of this type except his is a combination of Savage and Champion.”

Justin takes a deep breath and asks Vincent, “So, Vincent, this begs the question of what kind of frame are you looking to assemble? What type are you planning to use as the base for your frame?”
