Chapter 15: Ambiguous Wreckage

Chapter 15: Ambiguous Wreckage

It doesn't take long until the jetpack robots arrive to engage in combat with Stefan. He knows that his body is in the worst condition to fight, especially his cyborg arm which is the most damaged part of his body. The robots circle around Stefan then engage in combat one at a time. Stefan strikes a boxing stance. The robot throws a jab. Stefan blocks it quickly. The robot goes for a second jab. Stefan dodges it and punches it in the face with an electric shockwave, destroying its head. The robot is knocked back a great distance, but Stefan grapples onto it and swings it into the other robots. They easily manage to swiftly avoid the impact, which makes Stefan really frustrated.

Meanwhile, Rares keeps on building up heat and energy into his ball of fire which slowly but surely grows larger in size. A robot grabs Stefan from the back and holds him still. Stefan tries to struggle out of its grasp but it's useless. A robot rushes to land a critical blow on Stefan. He blocks with his cyborg arm, but the robot keeps on punching and kicking his arm. His arm suddenly explodes, releasing an electromagnetic pulse which staggers the 2 robots. Stefan looks at his cyborg arm, it's in perfect condition despite the armor it had being extremely damaged. Now that he has his old arm back, and undamaged as well, he has no reason to hold back.

"Heh, I feel lighter already." said Stefan as he shook his arm a little.

He quickly scanned the robot in front of him and found its energy source. He easily grappled onto it and pierced the source, absorbing it, followed by him delivering an electric shockwave into the robot that was holding him. Stefan looks around his surroundings.

"6 left. From what I've noticed, they hate attacking at once." said Stefan in his mind, as he was cautious of any sudden movements of the robots.

Stefan looks up and he sees machines repairing the spider.

"Dash left." said his combat assistant.

Stefan instantly does as said and dodges a sudden blow from behind. Stefan grapples onto its neck then kicks it away, chipping a part of its neck apart. The robot stands staggered in the same spot. Stefan takes this to his advantage and takes out his sword then slices its neck. Stefan is instantly assaulted by another jetpack robot which rams into him. Stefan is thrown back a large distance, he slides against the concrete. Using his sword, he stops the sliding and stabilizes himself. The same robot tries to ram into Stefan again by flying at insane speeds. Stefan quickly jumps, avoiding it. He smiles, but his happiness is cut short because another jetpack robot is right above him, flying downwards into him. The robot lands a wild punch into his face and pushes him down into the heated concrete of the road, destroying it at once. The robot keeps pushing down with its fist into Stefan's face. Stefan's body makes a majestic rev up sound, then his blood flames mode activates. He grips tightly onto the robot's arm and crushes it with some effort. The robot, seeing that it cannot engage in combat properly anymore, it self destructs. Stefan quickly gets up and gets out of the range of the explosion, rushing to the closest robot.

"One down." said Stefan in his mind.

The next robot tries to block Stefan's rushed blow, but fails miserably, its arms getting crushed with ease. Stefan pushes it away with his punch, dealing insane damage to it's structure. The robot self destructs once more.

"Two down."

Stefan looks around once more, suddenly, his vision starts to blur a little and he feels like it's suddenly harder to breathe. He looks at Rares and he sees a gigantic sphere of fire being charged above him. The robots are not phased by this and continue the assault. One of them successfully dashes and kicks Stefan in the back. Stefan grunts as he falls face down. He slowly tries to get up, his entire body shaking as he keeps on struggling. He expected a robot to come and stomp him to the ground, but to his surprise, he sees the 4 remaining robots take off.

Rares looks up at his ball of fire.

"Hm, that should be enough." said Rares to himself.

Rares solidifies the fire beams that link his palms and the sphere. He grips tight onto them and he pushes against the sphere, moving it into the spider. The spider quickly notices this and as an emergency measure it sends out hundreds of micro missiles, which instead of pushing against the sphere, the explosions enrage the already massive abomination of blazes. The jetpack robots take no time to reach the sphere and push against it, managing to stop it. Rares tries his best to push as well into the ball, but the robots are slightly stronger. However, to Rares' luck, the robots aren't specifically designed for heat resistance and as a consequence, their arms melt as they push themselves into the sphere. As a last resort they self destruct, which once again, enlarges the sphere. At this point, the ball already had the radius of a block of flats with 10 floors. Rares pushes with all of his might into the fire rods to move the sphere downwards and crash into the spider.

Stefan's blood flames mode starts to flicker as it passively becomes harder and harder to breathe. He sees… a great … powerful… majestic… source of light, that is slowly approaching.

"Is that… the sun?..." asked himself Stefan, before realizing that it is Rares' special plan to destroy the spider.

Since Stefan was right under the spider, he started to panic. Naturally, he tries to run away, but eventually resorts to slowly walking, as his body is too damaged to run. Stefan grapples onto the top of the spider and pulls himself upwards. However, he is too weak to forcefully make the hook let go, so he slams into the spider. He immediately starts falling down, and with his last bits of power, he grapples onto the spider a final time, swinging on the rope almost touching the ground. Eventually, he fully runs out of electricity and he flings into an apartment, busting through its wall. Stefan rolls on the floor for a few seconds then finally stops. His cyborg body turns off and he lies down face up.

Rares' sphere finally manages to engage with the spider, incinerating it little by little as it pushes deeper. The spider lets out unholy screeches of sheer suffering, as it stands its ground, incapable of doing anything against the almighty power of the mini star created by Rares. The sphere becomes smaller and smaller as Rares incinerates the spider further and further, eventually being reduced to nothingness when the entirety of the spider's upper body has been incinerated into nothing but countless ashes blown within the mighty wind, creating one hell of a ghost town feeling. Rares slowly floats down onto the ground as the remaining legs of the spider fall down and crumble one by one. Rares looks around him and he sees a hole in a building so he goes to check it. He deactivates his elementalist coat and leaps using bursts of flames, quickly arriving into the building. He sees Stefan on the floor, he picks him up then pulls out a small jar with portal juice out of his jacket. He pours it on the floor then he sets it on fire, opening a portal. He hops through it with Stefan and arrives back to the main room of the workshop, where the cat was refueling the teleportation machine. Rares drops Stefan on the floor. The cat turns around and notices them.

"I'll go rest. You do you." said Rares, before going to the first room on the left.

Stefan slowly starts getting up, his circuits faintly flashing up. The cat sighs then helps Stefan get up and walk over to the repair room.

8 hours pass, after a lot of hard work and many coffee cups, the cat finally finishes Stefan's cyborg suit fully. Stefan slowly wakes up, the first thing he notices being the sharp smell of coffee.

"Ugh, what the hell, did you fix my nose? How come I haven't felt this disgusted ever since I first arrived here?" asked Stefan.

"No, your nose is the same, I changed coffee brands." said the cat, followed by a silly chuckle.

"Anyways, I replaced your grappling hook for something you'll love." said the cat as he put his tools on a steel table.

"You're going to abuse another part of my body?" asked Stefan.

"No, of course not you silly… At least not now-"

"Excuse me?!-"

"Anyways, the data you have gathered was everything we ever needed. I was able to access their database with the emergency codes hidden within the spider's storage. I have total access over every single robot of theirs, but it's rather worthless right now since there are no more bosses. To put it in simpler terms, Andrew is the only strong one left. Rares told me that he feels like he started to get stronger little by little again, which is great news."

"Yeah… I could tell, he was the one who purely purged the spider."

The cat looks down at the floor then up at Stefan again.

"Mhm, I understand. I'm not even going to ask how your arm broke down, but nonetheless, I was going to remove it anyway. I greatly improved your electricity storage and your organic heart actually almost healed to perfect condition. I removed a lot of the cyborg enhancements and found out that your blood flames mode uses much less blood energy now. As long as you don't use any moves you will be able to hold it for minutes at a time."

"But what did you replace my hook for?" asked Stefan, slightly scared.

"When you use your sword, you can instantly boost yourself using electricity. You can spam this move from a robot to another robot. You can also absorb electricity through your sword now, so just dash from one robot to another and insta-kill them. Easy enough. Also, searching through their database, I found methods to make your armor more efficient and lighter. There was also this thing, which looked like a boss, but wasn't. It was a robot with a shovel."

"Yeah, I killed it."

"You did? Why didn't you scan?'

"I did, but it corrupted my system. The assistant kept repeating the word "fear" loudly in my headset."

"Weird… robots with souls… Anyways, I found its history."

"Let me guess, it went rogue one day and then it was turned out of use."

"Actually, no. It's a bit more complicated than that. It used to be a gravedigger, working at cemeteries. However, due to humans discovering cyborg enhancements their mortality rate vanished almost fully, together with funeral companies and the maintenance of the digger robot. It was sold to a cartel, however the seller did not know it was sold to a cartel. Despite that, the cartel took great care of it and enhanced it further. It has no criminal records… Or they just managed to hide them that well. The only registered cartel member was the one who bought the robot. He was known for his cruel nature, but sweet heart outside the dark business. I looked into the soldier slicer's database, it said there that the robot had the soul of "disdain" within it. However I don't understand how that works, since it was clearly loyal and respectful. So from what you tell me and from what I've read, the soul of this robot was…"

"Kindness?"

"Yeah, love is too much of a stretch."

"So… the nature of the human souls are the opposite of what they show to be like?" questioned Stefan.

"For those cases, yeah, I guess so. Anyways, we have no time to waste. There is a really, really powerful energy signal coming from the exact middle of the region. Rares said he is ready anytime to deploy. So are you. Let's go, no time to waste."

Stefan's looks saddens a bit when he remembers that his own friend dropped him down and didn't care to help him get up, but he brushes it off and stands up, following the cat.
