Chapter 13 - Fool Me Twice

Chapter 13 - Fool Me Twice

Sweat slowly slid down Trex's face. Being surrounded by a mob of angry warriors was never too easy. Several of them aimed a bow and arrow at her. Just then, a handclap was heard in the distance. She looked up to her left.

"Villagers, villagers," the dark figure said, walking towards Trex. "You see how this terrible woman is having such an innocent child at knife point. Why, it's just insane!"

"Brother!" Trex said, gritting her teeth.

"Oh? Brother you say? I'm Drexel. I'm a brother to all."

Murmuring formed from within the crowds. It was clear they didn't like Trex but that name. Drexel. They must've heard it before because upon hearing it, many of them backed away from him and Trex.

"You're related to that murderer?" One voice asked.

"Yes, yes she is! She shares my passion oh so well!" Drexel said, coming in to hug Trex.

Trex jumped back with the monster still in hand. "Not in your life! Where's the child?"

"Oh, what child do you speak of? You have the only child in your hands."

The onlookers looked in disgust. They must be wondering what Trex was asking. Maybe they felt that she was a monster. No different from the vile Drexel. Trex shook her head. This was nonsense.

"People of Trutess. Do you think this girl deserves to treat this child in such a manner?" Drexel said.

The people looked amongst each other and then faced Drexel. "What about you?" one voice said. "Aren't you the one attacking the other villages?"

Drexel shook his head and laughed. "My fair sir, I no longer intend to do such harm. I've changed my ways. In fact, I came here with a proposal."

Another warrior aimed an arrow at Drexel. "We're listening."

Gemini slashed one of the monsters as it fell to the ground. Just then, a monster leaped from behind him. A loud swoosh echoed and the monster fell to the ground. Metal stars stuck out of its side before it exploded in dark light.

"Nice work!" Gemini said, looking at the warrior.

The warrior scratched the back of his head. "Aw shucks. It was nothing."

Gemini couldn't believe that they would be of so much help. It was only 3 of them, but these three were more than enough.

One of them was covered head to toe in leather. His face except his eyes and hair was completely covered. The other warrior had a sword and fairly sturdy yet slim armor. She sported short black hair. The last warrior was a robed girl with a jump rope. All three unique in their own right.

"What are your names anyway?" Gemini said before dodging a slash.

"I'm Ninja-man," the first one said as Nocturn's claw slashed his way. He rolled away from the attack and threw several stars at the monster, causing it to fall to the ground.

"I'm Warriola!" She said, slashing another monster in half.

"And I'm..I'm Pixie!" She said, jumping on another monster and wrapping the rope around its neck. She then jumped to the ground, gripping the rope and knocking the monster to the ground.

Gemini smiled. They were unique alright. They seemed to be very animated. Livelier than any other Veithan he's seen. Gemini then straightened his face. "Alright guys, we have to circle the entire area. None of these monsters can escape!"

"Roger!" they replied.

"Give up Gemini?" one of the villagers stated.

"Yes, give him up," Drexel said. "We need to make sure Veith is in good hands, right? Think about it. Ever since he's ran Veith, trouble has been afoot. I wasn't the one who caused all the problems, he was! He forced me from the ranks and now I'm stuck trying to make a life for myself.

"And when did Gemini once ever consider how any of you felt about your suffering? How often does he visit the sick? The lame? The downtrodden?"

The townspeople looked amongst themselves and began to chatter. This wasn't good. They were actually considering this crazy man's word? This was madness!

"Drexel! Stop this immediately!" Trex yelled.

"Why? So, they can be wide open to another one of your attacks?" Drexel said, raising an eyebrow.

The crowd then looked at Trex. Trex allowed a bead of sweat to roll down her face. "Don't look at me! I'm not the bad one here! He's suggesting mutiny!"

"True, but at least he's not holding a child at knife point!" a voice said.

She huffed. "For goodness sake!" She slit the monster's throat as it fell to the ground. It groaned and eventually dissipated in white light. Her jaw dropped. It was common knowledge that white light appears normally when a Veithan dies. Then again, Dimensional Release on any creature has the same white light effect. Could Drexel have used the power to stage this monster's death? All the while, the monster didn't go back to its original form as it died. It looked like she murdered a child!

The crowd was in an uproar as Trex stared in bewilderment at what happened. She slowly backed away as the crowd advanced towards her. This wasn't happening. After all that Drexel has done and now this. Betrayed by her own brother. And for what? What was he trying to gain from all of this?

Trex placed her hands up in surrender. "I didn't mean anything by killing him! It was a monster, honest!"

Drexel smiled before yelling. "Seize her!"

They all tried to jump the female warrior but she jumped back and avoided the onslaught. Drexel doesn't really care huh? She scoffed, then declared, "Try me."

She dodged every person who tried to jump at her. One person jumped forward and she rolled to the left. Someone tried to grab her legs and she jumped above them. She then proceeded to run out of harm's way and into the forest.

The last monster fell to the ground and Gemini couldn't be happier. The opposition had been demolished. Gemini and the trio jumped in victory. Now, it was a matter of dealing with Drexel. Gemini decided to try running towards the town but then quickly stopped. He saw Trex running deeper in the forest. And as Trex continued to run, a crowd of people ran after her. No doubt they were the townspeople. There must be a clear reason why they were after her.

Gemini rushed and jumped in front of the crowd. "Stop!"

Trex stopped and turned around. The crowd stopped immediately. They all scowled at him. This was not the expression he wanted to see on his townspeople.

"Why are you protecting that traitor?" One of the villagers stated.

"Traitor? Since when did she become a traitor?"

"Since she killed a child! Even Drexel has yet to kill a child in cold blood!"

Gemini wide-eyed looked back at Trex.

Trex was all in arms. "Gemini! You saw that monster with your own eyes! It transformed into a child!"

Gemini thought back and what she said was indeed true. It wasn't a child that was in the middle of the town. It was a shape-shifting monster. But, at this point, it was hard to convince such a rowdy crowd.

"Listen," Gemini said, facing the people once more, "she's not the enemy here. I saw it with my own eyes too. That was no child! I was on the outskirts of your town, defeating the monsters surrounding and ready for an ambush!"

"See how he lies!" a familiar voice said in the distance. The crowd parted as Drexel walked and came into full view.

Gemini scowled. This must have been part of Drexel's plan all along. But how? It's not like the traitor knew that they would be in the area. For what it's worth, Drexel shouldn't have known they were coming at all.

"You, my former friend, are under arrest," Drexel stated.

"For what?" Gemini asked.

"For raising up a murderer. And you call yourself the sole guardian of Tolvia," Drexel mocked before spitting on the ground.

"You have some nerve, traitor."

"Drexel said he would change his ways!" The people yelled.

Gemini shook his head. "Seriously? Can't you see this is all a set up people? You've heard the reports! He's been doing nothing but terrorizing all the other regions!"

"Who said that would've been me?" Drexel stated, crossing his arms. "If you claim the child was indeed a shape-shifting monster, why can't the same be said about the other incidents? Did you even ever consider I was framed as well?"

A sound argument. And from Drexel of all people. It wasn't completely believable considering what Drexel and Gemini have been through for the past years but still. This was definitely a plan he'd meditated on for some time. It has too much precision to just be thrown together.

"Furthermore, how can you prove that you defeated all the monsters? Even if there were monsters around, you alone wouldn't be able to fight them all. Who helped you?"

Gemini winced. The people knew full well of Advent Village. Any habitants of that village were strictly forbidden to leave. And, hiding further in the forest, three of them laid in wait.

"Some fine warriors. They've left. As for proof of monsters, I don't need any. You've seen what happens when anyone dies. They dissipate. There's no logical way of proving it, besides how torn my clothes look at the moment."

Drexel clapped his hands. "Bravo, my dear friend. Bravo indeed. And yet, here comes those fine warriors now." Drexel pointed behind Gemini.

Gemini turned his head and gritted his teeth. The three warriors were brought forward by a few of the townspeople. The others gasped noticing right away who the three warriors were.

"You brought Advent inhabitants to our area!?" the people roared.

"These aren't the same Advent warriors as you all know! These are all stable!"

"Arrest them immediately!" Drexel said.

They all gathered around the Advent people and tied their wrists with rope. Several big members of the clan pinned them down to the ground.

"What do you have to say for yourself, dear ruler?" Drexel said with a wry smile.

Gemini gritted his teeth and tightened his fists. "Fine. Take them."

"Arrest Gemini too!" A townsperson yelled.

Gemini turned his head and closed his eyes. "I'll go willingly. I broke the rules so it's only fair." Trex's eyes widened. He could only imagine what she thought at that moment. Anger? Shock? Disappointment?

He could feel the ropes tighten around his wrists. Eventually, he felt a thrust against his head as he hit the ground. Ringing echoed in his ears. Did he want to give up this easily?

In the distance, he could hear the struggle that Trex and the others were going through. Gemini kept his eyes closed amongst the madness. This would be over soon. This madness will come to an end.
