The Tale of Yume, the Book Lover
Night Nine: Yume of a New World

Night Nine: Yume of a New World

...There really is nothing.

Even when looking at the back of my hand, there is nothing.

"Maybe I could become a magical girl?" I mused casually.

At school, we were divided into classes, and I was relieved to find myself in the same class as the friends I had from kindergarten.

The first period was not a lesson but a homeroom session. It involved an activity to encourage everyone to get along, where each student introduced themselves, shared their skills, and what they liked, followed by a study session about the school rules.

The second period was dedicated to practicing how to write our names in kanji. Why is my name 'Yume' so complicated to write...?

The third period was life skills. Though it was about following traffic rules, what to do if a pervert approaches (like using a buzzer), and helping those in need, it covered all the basics we needed to learn.

In the fourth period, the teacher gave out "name stickers" and we practiced writing our kanji names on them and sticking them onto our belongings.

Then came lunch break and mealtime. "This is how you should portion the food," we were taught, and I was assigned to be on duty starting the next day.

Today's lunch menu included:

- Chop suey

- Koppe bread

- Fruit yogurt

- A pack of milk

It all looked delicious, but I wished I could eat it laughing and chatting like at home. Just as I was thinking this, a friend from kindergarten invited me, "Yume-chan, let’s eat together!"

We pushed our desks together and four of us ate together. We talked about not being able to write our names well, how nice and kind our teacher seemed, and one of the more precocious girls had already found a boy she liked. Indeed, food tastes better when eaten together with everyone!

After finishing lunch, some went out to play in the schoolyard, others stayed in the classroom playing hero games, and some continued practicing writing their names.

"Yume-chan, want to go somewhere?"

"Let’s go on an adventure!"

"Let’s go!"
