Chapter 042 - The Best Place To Rest

I stopped before the hideout tunnel and went into it, surprisingly I lost my way a few times until I found how to get to the hideout.

“Even though this place is hard to enter, it's still strange that there were no monsters calming this palace as their own.” I said as I walked to the tree near the pond.

I dropped the items that I collected from our walk, they were mostly *Sanale Grass*, a few small *Gravis* stones for spears and other uses, not forgetting a few mushrooms for the wolf to eat.

It almost completely escaped my mind that living creatures needed food to live as I never ate in this world till now, it would have been really stupid of me if the wolf would have died from being malnourished.

First I looked for some big slab of stone where I could make a paste from the grass, I found one nice big slab behind the tree.

“It was quite flat and would be perfect as a temporary table.” I said as I cleaned the top part from it with my branches while crouching with the wolf's body as I was still on its back.

After doing that I washed the grass in the pond and brought it to the stone table, I picked the sharpest *Gravis* stone I could find and started to cut and smash all of the grass, making a weird paste from it. As I finished I heard the voice of the heavens once more.

*Skill learned “Alchemy”*

I immediately inspected the skill with delight.

***

*Alchemy* - Helps the user to create miracle potions and medicine, by combining herbs and other materials. From helping the user with recipes to ways to cut, smash or apply an ingredient in the recipe.

As I finished reading that I started to apply this paste to the wolf's wounds, and even made him eat some of it. I took the chance and hoped that it wasn’t poisonous for the canine family race as it didn’t say anything about that in the inspection.

After finishing that I collected some dried branches and leaves from the floor and found a clear area where I started to try to make a campfire on it. It was a little uncomfortable as my hands were a little bit short so I used the *Grow* skill. In the end, I chose to call it a day and stay in the hideout till tomorrow morning anyways.

I was hitting one *Gravis* stone on the other and once in a while sparks were flying from the hits and in the end, a small flame appeared in front of me.

“It's a lot easier to do it the second time.” I said as I remember that I had to kill a few rats with flames before.

I dropped a few more branches and leaves into the fire, while I went to bring the mushrooms that I found on the way here. I stuck them onto a stick and started to cook them above the flames.

After doing it for a while, I started to see juice falling from them upon the flames. A pleasant aroma assaulted me through the wolf’s nose.

“Oh right my smell sense became a lot sharper, I barely can smell with the *Magic Perception* skill but now I can enjoy it to the fullest!” I said with a big smile as I brought the barbequed mushrooms in front of the wolf's mouth and gave them a few sniffs.

“I won’t be surprised if the wolf won't be happy being on this vegan diet but I am sure it will thank me later!” I said with a stupid smile as I took a bite from the mushrooms.

The taste was quite bland as I didn’t have any pepper or salt but for me, it was heaven-like, as it was the first real meal I had from the moment I came to this world. The eyes of the wolf shined and a big smile appeared on my imaginary face as I waged the wolf's tail on instinct.

“This is the best meal I ever had in my life!” I shouted into the void, and I wasn’t wrong it really was the best meal I had in this life.

I devoured the other mushrooms and laid down near the fire, a little bit happier than before even though I still could feel the pain running through the wolf’s body. As I laid there and looked into the embers I checked my and the wolf's status.

Even though our states weren’t that good it was somewhat expected but at least, the wolf's health stopped dropping down for now, and that was mostly because he was fed and a healing grass paste was applied upon his wounds.

What surprised me too is that my stamina and health regen increased by a lot, at first I thought that it was because I didn’t move much but then it dawned on me that it could be because I take my nourishment from the wolf directly.

This meant that now that I had another reason to save this wolf's life and with that, the problem of my low stamina shouldn’t really bother me anymore.

“Now I can ride my mighty steed into battle…” I murmured as I imagined myself with a red mask and a white wolf pelt for a cape ridging my wolf into battle while holding a spear, against those that want to destroy the forest.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

With those thoughts in mind, I went to sleep with a small smile on my imaginary face. I woke up a few times in the middle of the night to check the state of the wolf. His situation wasn’t the best as he was still shivering and weak even with the gentle flames that were in front of him. I could only sigh inside and hope for its fast recovery, and just like that, another day passed.

*****

I walked into the forest once more, this time I knew that I could use the flora around me to heal us both, so I wasn't so scared for time. I made a few simple traps here and there, for some small bunnies or other tiny monsters.

The hope that they would fall into them was small, as I didn’t even have a good bait as my berries had a weak effect of attracting animals so I just used a few mushrooms and a few small sour yellow fruits that I found on my way, but it still was better than nothing.

After walking for a while I found that the wolf's body was getting tired again and the stamina consumption was enormous. I thought of leaving the wolf in the hideout but I doubted it would survive the wounds that will be left as I leave its body. Not talk about the roots that I would need to snatch and leave with him as stitches.

I could only sigh at my predicament. “*Sigh* It would have been a lot easier if I had my berries but not even one of them grew as my roots were burrowed in the ground, the damage to my body is most likely just too big.”

*Sight* I sighed again as I threw one of these fruits back hearing a squeak as it hit something. I turned around only to see a fat squirrel holding its head in pain.

“Prey!” I shouted in my head as I tried to chase after the squirrel, even though it had little health it was a lot better than nothing, as the squirrel saw me running after it, its hair stood up and it immediately ran away.

I ran with the full power that the wolf's body and *Tree Puppet* skill could muster but no matter what I did I just couldn’t shorten the distance between us as the wolf got slower and slower, and before I could even notice I lost the squirrel from my sight completely.

“Damn fat squirrel, I will have you for dinner one day!” I shouted into the void, I thought of following its smell but I chose not to as I doubted if anything changed if I met it a second time.

But as I was walking back I found something interesting or to say it more correctly I smelled something delicious through the wolf sense, for some reason it reminded me of my childhood as if the smell of a meal that a mother would make.

I slowly changed my direction and found myself in an open field of flowers, in the middle of that field there was a tree with pink leaves, and it had one red juicy fruit that was poking from its top. The fruit was around the size of a human head and broken a little bit from the middle, some golden juice was slowly gathering and falling from that crack. The smell that was coming from it was mesmerizing, it gave me emotions I never felt before.

“*Gulp* What a tasty looking fruit…” I said to myself as saliva started to fill the wolf's mouth.

I made a few steps into the field of flowers, and the feeling of safety and calmness overloaded me. It made me want to stay in this field till the end of my days. As I walked deeper and deeper all I wanted to do is find a good spot to rest and enjoy this beautiful scenery.

But on the other hand, all my senses focused on the tasty smell of the fruit that was hanging from the tree, all until a weak smell of something rotten entered my nose as well. I slowly shook my head left and right until I came back to my senses. To my surprise, I discovered that even that motion was hard for me to do.

“Something is not right!” I started to slowly back off from the field of flowers and my instincts screamed danger. With every step I took, I expected the flowers to suddenly attack me but just as I quietly entered the field, the same way I quietly left it.

As I did so I immediately faced the field with a tinge of fear, looking at it as if I looked into the teeth of a monster but the field of flowers continued to stay silent. There was no ambush, no danger, nothing, but still, for some reason, I felt that if I entered this field once more I would have died.

“This field is very strange.” I used my detection skill a few times in the field but nothing came out of it. It was completely empty of monsters, so I started to inspect the flowers.

***

*Eternal Slumber Flower* - A predatory flower that spreads around its poisonous pollen to confuse and paralyze its victims. Making them fall asleep near the area of the flowers and nourish themselves from their corpses. One of the most dangerous flowers that can be found in the Forest Of Dusk if one dares to sleep near one the person will never wake up.

***

“Shit…” I looked at the tree and inspected it too.

***

*Motherly Embrace Tree* - A tree that produces one fruit that will attract all the surrounding living creatures to its smell. Those who smelled it say that the first thing that popped into their head is motherly love as they ate the first meal of their childhood. The weird part is it happens even if they were orphans and never had a mother in their life.

Usually found near cliffs, dangerous terrain, or monsters that are immune to the poisonous mist that it secretes, so that the ground around it would always be full of nutrition for its growth. Those who meet this tree usually find themself on a bitter end, but if they are lucky to harvest its fruit then it would sell for a good coin as alchemists can use it to create health potions and perfumes for the nobles.

***

“What a nasty combination one of them attracts victims from afar and the other one paralyzes them and slowly kills them as they fall asleep near them…” Both of the plans were working together, it was unknown which of them grew here first but their combination was perfectly symbiotic and nasty.

After a few more moments of thought, I found something confusing, “How did the poison affect me? Did it work through the wolf's body?” I immediately checked my statutes and found out that I and the wolf shared the same debuffs of confusion as well as the wolf had weak paralysis status.

“So I am immune to paralysis poison but not to the confusion poison, weird and interesting at the same time, and if my theory is correct I shouldn’t be able to get poisoned by contact.” I rooted myself to the ground and used *Forced Absorption* skill making the grass around me wither, of course, I didn’t dare to force absorb the flower afraid of getting a huge dose of its poison.

As the grass withered around me I used the *Grow* skill to grow one root and move it into the field of flowers, as the root slowly moved like a snake between the flowers my back completely became drenched in a cold sweat.

Because the field was filled with bones sticking out of the ground, many of them were from small monsters such as bunnies, squirrels, and birds to bigger monsters such as wolves, boars, and even bears.

“This place is a graveyard…” I said as my root touched a bear's skull, I looked shocked at the quantity of so many bones. But at the same time, I was carefully checking my status to see if I was getting poisoned, but just as I speculated I was completely immune to both of the poisons.

“And that is the furthest I can go.” I said as I couldn't grow my roots any longer, the distance my roots traveled was around seven meters, which was quite far but the further away they grew the harder it was to control them and harder to grow them. In the end, it was almost impossible for me to grow them even an inch forward so I just gave up.

“I didn’t cross even a tenth of the field, with the wolf body connecting to me it would be quite hard for me to get that fruit and it's such a shame as the fruit have healing abilities and I won’t be surprised that they are a lot better than the *Sanale Grass*, *Inspect* fruit.” I said that while inspecting the fruit.

***

*Motherly Embrace* - A fruit that grows on the Motherly Embrace Tree, the main source of attraction to the tree. Without it, the luring abilities of the tree will be greatly reduced but still present. The fruit juice extract can be used as the main lure while the fleshy part can be used as a basic healing remedy or with the hands of an expert alchemist can be turned into a healing potion around the D rank.

Rank: Rare

Status: Healing Effect(Medium), Lure Effect(Strong)

***

“D rank? What is that?” I looked at it and even tried to inspect it but all I got from the inspection skill was, *”D rank is a D rank.”* message.

“No shit sherlock…” I grumbly said as I cut off the long root that was still in the field of flowers as it slowly withered away.

“Looks like I won’t be able to get the fruit in the close time, maybe when the wolf's body will be in a better state I will try to separate from it. Now that I think about it I don’t know if it's even possible, it won’t just immediately die… Right?” I asked myself a question that I couldn’t really know.

“I should have used the *Overtake* skill a few more times and learned its limits and abilities. Well actually I am not to blame here, it was Glad’s and Scarlet's fault they kidnapped me and tried to sell me to that insane village head. That reminds me where did they even vanish to?” I asked myself but in the end, shook my head as I had other problems to deal with.

“Nah, let's not think about it too much. I still need to heal myself, and now I even have this burden under me that I need to save too, I hope it will be worth it.” I closed my eyes for a moment, appearing in the world of darkness where I still saw the sleeping wolf not moving.

“*Sigh* Let's return, it's already getting late, I still need to find something suitable to eat and grab a few more healing herbs for the wolf wounds and even myself.” I looked in the direction of my hideout as I started to leave the field of flowers behind, the wind gently blowing through it as two red eyes were looking right at me from the lonely tree where the fruit was hanging.
