Aladdin and the 6 thieves

Aladdin and the 6 thieves

Aladdin and 6 thieves stole gold coins from the sultan’s vault. After spending a day running, they set camp for the night. While everyone was sleeping, one thief woke up to the rustle of coins. He looked around and caught another thief walking away with all the coins!

“Hey,” he said quietly. “Split the coins with me and I won’t yell.” The other thief agreed but when they split the coins there was one leftover. At this moment, another thief woke up.

“What are you 2 doing?” She asked. “Split the coins with me and I won’t yell.” The other 2 agreed and split the coins 3 ways. However, they still ended up with 1 coin leftover. Then, another thief woke up...split between 4 thieves; ended with 1 coin left over. The same result happened with 5 thieves and 6 thieves.

“No matter how you guys try to split the coins, there will always be one coin leftover unless the pile is split between all of us or one of us.” Aladdin said, starling everyone. “I thought you guys were going to try and ditch me so I grabbed this number of coins for that reason!” How many coins did Aladdin take?
